  1. It goes without saying that whoever comes out of the bracket with Ooltewah in it will have proven they are the best. If they have any legs in them whatsoever will be another story. According to McCallie's athletic website they have 2 games in Alpheretta, Ga then open with Cleveland on Wednesday night. Cleveland is extremely talented with an unbelievable point guard in Bowles(I think that's his name). Baylor should have a fairly easy time getting through their bracket to get into the finals. However, Notre Dame with their guard play could be problematic for Baylor.

    What does everyone else think?

I agree that Baylor appears to be the favorite in their bracket. I must also agree with statements suggesting the brackets being a bit lop-side (at least on paper). No team in the bracket containing CSAS, Notre Dame, Red Bank, and Baylor has a winning record. Baylor's body of work is too limited right now to really say that they have a "losing record" and they at least have a win over traditional powerhouse Howard on their resume'. The previous bracket pales in comparison to the other bracket with McCallie, Ooltewah, Tyner, and Cleveland, all with minimal losses if any.

  2. Stedmon Ford- Notre Dame

    D.J. Bowles- Cleveland

    Bryce Copeland- Bradley Central

    Antonio Jackson- Ooltewah

    Reggie Upshaw- Baylor

    Terrance Odonohue- Mccallie

    Cody Knox- East Hamilton

These are just the few that I know of, all are very impressive!

    Great list

  3. I have to correct you on this. Hixson has been 6AA since 2001. They were AAA before this. The 6AA district consisted of Hixson, Sequatchie, Bledsoe, Grundy, Marion, Howard East Ridge and Notre Dame. A few years later CSAS joined and eventually CCS joined. District 5AA consisted of Brainerd, Tyner, McMinn Central, Sequoyah, Sweetwater, Tellico Plains, Boyd Buchanan and Meigs. A few years later Brainerd, Tyner joined 6AA from 5AA, Red Bank and Central joined 6AA from 6AAA and East Hamilton joined 6AA when it opened. CCS, Sequatchie, Bledsoe, Notre Dame and Grundy joined a district together, Marion went A and CSAS went A. The district now is still 6AA with Howard, Brainerd, Hixson, Tyner, Red Bank, Central, East Ridge and East Hamilton. Hixson has been 6AA since 2001 and went to the Region every year except the last four years. They were never in 7AA and I am certain about that.

I humbly accept your correction (notice that "I believe" accompanied that portion of my previous post) & my assertion that the "current 6AA" was formed 3 years ago is more vital to my point than the previous districts of the schools. It remained the same district in name only, not in composition. The "current 6AA" is much stronger & it will be much tougher to penetrate the traditional basketball powerhouses of Howard, Brainerd, Tyner, and Red Bank. Also, they actually did go to the Region & lost to Tyner in the 1st round in a game played at Tyner when former Tyner player Michael Bradley was a junior and former Hixson player Randy Boyd was a sophomore . The remainder of the region was played at McMinn County with Brainerd beating Tyner in the championship.

Just to make it clear, I'm not saying that Hixson's coach is doing a great job, nor am I saying that he's doing a poor job. I've never been to a practice session or critically assessed his performance. But I do know that it's a lot easier to coach when you have talent, and I'm not sure that anyone other than the tall kid on their current team could start for ANY of the traditional powerhouses listed above. No knock on the kids. That's just where it is right now.

  4. That is an embarrassing article. The bad part is the Hixson coaches response about turning the ball over against Hixson Middle School. Very unprofessional and demeaning to his players. Parents should be upset about that, his players should be upset and Tyner should be upset too for him comparing them to middle school talent. Why would you be playing the middle school or scrimmaging them anyway. No wonder they are not going to get better. Dishrags excuse may be that it is one of the best districts in the state but 16 points! Really? Surely as a high school coach he could find a way to create more points. Maybe he needs to coach middle school? By his words, they can obviously beat the high school. I don't want to hear the best district in the state excuse because just 4 or 5 years ago Hixson was very successful in the same district and made it to the region every year. Something has got to change. These kids deserve more than failure and excuses! Somebody needs to wake up!

16 points is not good, in fact it's pretty bad, but out of respect to all involved, I won't comment anymore on that. However, the current District 6AA was formed only 3 years ago. It pulled Brainerd & Tyner from District 5AA, Hixson,Howard, and East Ridge from District 7 AA (I believe), Red Bank & Central from AAA & newly formed East Hamilton. So Hixson very well may have made it to the region prior to 6AA, but it certainly hasn't since joining 6AA.

  5. What in the world has happened to Hixson boys basketball. I never thought I would say this but it looks as if the girls team may be getting better than the boys. They were terrible against Soddy. No discipline and they looked like they didn't know what they were doing. The tradition of basketball deserves more than this. I remember when coach dishrag was hired, he said they were use to hanging banners in the rafters and winning championships at Hixson, I plan on carrying on this tradition. Ha! Ha! Ain't happening. Time for a change. It is embarrassing to watch these kids cheated from learning the game of basketball and experiencing success. It is time for a change!

With all due respect oochie, the blame may not solely lie on coaching. Hixson competes in what may be the toughest district outside of AAA in Memphis, with the likes of Howard, Brainerd, Tyner, and Red Bank. Each of these schools have been to the State Tournament during Coach Disabrow's tenure. Additionally, East Hamilton is up & coming since they are the new thing in town, and Central showed that they are a force to contend with by beating East Hamilton. Talent distribution is an issue for all Hamilton County schools because of the number of schools, but, with respect to Hixson's current players, it has hit Hixson particularly hard.

In regards to the discipline, it follows commitment. Improvement follows discipline. If kids aren't afraid of losing the opportunity to play, what incentive do they have to do what the coach asks them to do? And surprisingly, parents blindly support that behavior. Being a fan of high school basketball, I see this across the board. Not just Hixson.

  6. Im not a big bball guy, but from what i hear around Chattanooga area is csas is a really good team. Why are they not in the top ten? and i agree this ap stuff is awful. all sports

CSAS probably should be in this poll. They returned all of their major contributors from a state tourney team, they've played a brutal schedule versus a lot of perenial powerhouse AA teams (Brainerd, Howard, Tyner)along with Hixson & Notre Dame up to this point. Throw in a very talented McCallie & that's a recipe for disaster. To my knowledge they held their own during that time, only falling to Tyner & Hixson (both in ot I believe).

I don't have a lot of knowledge of the teams mentioned here to say who shouldn't be on here, but CSAS has proven last year, this year, and in years past that they deserve stronger consideration than they appear to be receiving.

  7. you can go ahead and scratch temple off of the list I think they have 54 students in the whole school and I seriously doubt they have any solid contributers returning

Agreed! and hopefully 2010 all-state tourney performer Corey Nelson(Grace)will return to a high level of play following his football injury. Grace's success will depend alot on him.

  8. I beliveve the top preseason poll could look like this based on last yrs finish.

    1. Clarksville Academy

    2. columbia Academy

    3. westwood

    4. Humbolt

    5. City university

    6. Union City

    7. Middleton

    8. Scottshill

    9. Adamville

    10. Douglass

CSAS (Chattanooga)has to be on this list! State tourney appearance in 2010 & returns all significant contributors. (I believe lost one to transfer & one to graduation). Good & experienced coaching staff. They've been there. Look for them to make some waves.

  9. 1st of all, great posts! Unfortunately, I think we may be "preaching to the choir", but the comments could provide direction to a young coach or a parent who got off track for a moment.

At any rate, it should be understood that the players who give the team the best opportunity to be successful are going to play. As a former coach & "afterlete", I understood this, so I did things to prove that I should be 1 of the 5 on the court. Players (and generally this generation, imo) have developed a a sense of entitlement, in which they think that have a right to a certain amount of playing time for whatever reason, regardless of how well they performed in practice or in the classroom. Couple that with an "it's all about me attitude" (often cultivated by unsuspecting parents), and you have a conflict in the making that will be intensified by players & parents behaving as though they know more than coaches. This undermines the authority of the coach and creates an environment where all team members will rarely be on the same page.

I'll admit that it is pretty common to 2nd guess coaches, even ones who have forgotten more than we ever learned. I catch myself from time-to-time (yall have to admit that you thought Calipari should have fouled before the 3 pointer by Chalmers :thumb: ). But most coaches consider the make-up of their team and prepare to win accordingly.

So parents & other supporters of players, please understand that when you suggest to that player that she/he should do something other than what the coaches have asked them to do, you are creating confusion in their mind & dissension among teammates. The team is destined to underachieve as a result and, you can't blame the coach for that.

  10. Turtle,

I don't recall a fight at the Tyner vs. Howard game(s), but it may have occurred outside or after the games. The suggestions that I made were not only in response to Friday's incident, but previous newsworthy incidents at Brainerd with the potential for a bad outcome. I'm choosing not to delve deep into those incidents because I, like you, believe that they do not represent Brainerd's faculty, students, nor the basketball Panthers & Lady Panthers. At issue is the negativity associated with Brainerd right now and the comfort level at which fans feel they can come & enjoy an evening of basketball.

So my suggestions were definitely not meant to punish Brainerd's Basketball Program, but to consider the 1,000 or so paying fans. However, I can see how it would could be viewed as punishing Brainerd.

By the way, I'll be the 1st to admit that it could happen anywhere @ any game (My understanding is that there was also a fight at the Hixson vs. Central game, but no write-up or discussion on that one).

Out of respect for both schools, I won't discuss this aspect of the game anymore, but will offer my 2 cents on what occurred on the court

  11. T-Mac, I'm in total agreement with you. Initially, I was excited that the district tourney would be held in Hamilton County (not to mention the region), but after Friday night, I think the venue needs to be changed. There's too much negative behavior associated with Brainerd right now. In an article in the Chattanoogan, Brainerd's principal tried to indirectly re-direct some of that negative press towards Tyner, by suggesting that only 1-2 students involved in 4-5 fights were from Brainerd. LOL. That didn't appeal to my common sense (neither did the fights). I'm supposed to think that Tyner students waited all week to fight each other @ the Brainerd/Tyner game. Don't get me wrong, most fights take place because of an audience, but 30-40 yelling "fight, fight, fight..." is enough to satisfy that requirement. If I had a say in the matter, they should hold the district & the region at East Hamilton. My 2nd choice would be East Ridge (district only). Nothing against Brainerd. It's just associated with too much drama right now & I just wanna enjoy some good basketball.

  12. Turtle, Tyner won by 4. I don't think the teams hate each other. The atmosphere is amped up by immature adults and even more immature teenagers. Neither realizing that you can support your team without being negative to the opposing team. I wouldn't classify this as a Tyner/ Brainerd issue though (not saying that you were). It's across the board. Grown children & immature adults (ironic).

  13. Re: the Bradley kid from Tyner,

T-Mac, I normally agree with you in part if not fully, but I think this might be a case of the "I know more than the people who get paid to do this". While I respect your opinion & Jay Z did say "numbers don't lie", numbers also don't predict potential. In the college recruiting scene, guards are primarily measured by numbers & leadership, big men are measured by potential, skill level, and mobility. Now back to the numbers: Connecticut (Big East, Hall of Fame Coach), Boston College (ACC), Georgia (SEC) as well as Drake & up & coming VCU were his top five from my understanding. These professionals see (saw) something. He may never be the kid we can brag about in the barbershops, but I think he'll be a quality student/ athlete whether it be Connecticut or elsewhere.

  14. Lion, I can understand your tone with the comment regarding Nick getting along with the coach, but I simply said "he chose not to play football this year". And to be clear, it did come from his mouth. I asked him at the Tyner vs. Redbank football game. No, I'm not related to him.

  15. You most definitely have to include Brainerd as contenders! When you look at District 6AA, you're looking at a district that consists of 3 2008-2009 District Champs (Regular Season)(Brainerd, Howard, Red bank). Two of those teams went to the State. Red Bank & Howard returns most of their productive players. You throw in TYner, who lost at the sub-state level and you have a very competitive district. Hixson, East Ridge, and Central will put some good athletes on the floor as well. Who knows what East Hamilton will have. I tend to think they may struggle a bit despite solid coaching.

  16. Ok, I thought I would put my two cents in. 1st off, classy posts by everybody. It's good that we can have passsionate discussions without namecalling. Kudos for Chattanooga fans.

Let's 1st generally address Chattanooga Basketball:

Good talent & coaching at A & AA. AAA is a little young right now, but we'll know more as the season progresses.

District 6-AA may be the toughest district in the state. Each night, every team can be beat. Yes, Howard, Red Bank, & Tyner has some good piesces & experience and could be considered favorites, but all are subject to "parental/ fan intervention" and at that point anything goes.

I expect Arts & Sciences & Grace to be pretty good, possibly sub-state & state level. Grace does have experience, particularly in the backcourt, which is crucial.

McCallie should make a run for the state. Two top 100 players (in some ATL circles they talk about the SG like he's the next Lebron). Good, experienced coaching & good shooters returning.

Howard: I know I said I was talking about individuals, but Howard plays as one unit. Great defense! returns most players from a 4th ranked team in the state.

Michael Bradley: Bradley's back to the basket game needs work, but his faceup game is a lot better than he's given credit for. He has a good motor & runs the court well. Above all, he works hard, is coachable , and he's 6'9!We (myself inlcuded)have a tendency to superinflate our own knowledge of basketball & minimize that of the people who are paid to do it. I'm certainly not in the position to argue with the coaches from UConn, Boston College, Drake, Georgia, etc. He was also ranked top 100 by Scouts.com. Doubt that anyone else is either.

  17. Do you have a planned girls' roster?

    Kylea Sharrock- Silverdale

    Kaylan Dilts- Grace

    April McCann- Lookout Valley

    Takeya Day- Red Bank

    Candace Dyer- Tennessee Temple

    Christina Teter- Red Bank

    Sharonda Huff- Tyner

    Jamisha Featherstone- Arts & Sciences

    Kelsie McNutt- McMinn Central

    KiKi Goodman- Tyner

    Raven Hunt- Hamilton Heights

    Labresha Battle- Brainerd

    Crystal Moore- Howard

  18. will you guys be playing Howard next year. I would love to see Moose whip up on you again /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

It's my understanding that Red Bank & Howard will be in the same district along with Brainerd, Tyner, Hixson, East Hamilton, Central, and East Ridge. If that's true, it will be a competitive district and fun to watch.
