  1. I remember 2 years ago with about a minute and a half in the game against Livingston Gibson County was up about 12 and all I could do was cry. We had been to Murfreesboro for years and finally got over the hump. And last year against Mcminn we made a dramatic comeback and beat Mcminn, yet I was so happy but it was such an emotional game I got to know Coach Morgan, Mr. Massengill and lots of of Mcminn fans I could not help but feel bad for Mcminn. You could tell they were as passionate as we are if not more. I sat in there section today and almost felt like we won another after the game. I seen the tears, hugs and the passion for a team and a program that has been so successful over the years finally get their GOLD DAY they deserved. CONGRATS to Johnny Morgan and the whole Mcminn fanbase on a great tournament and getting the GOLD. Well Deserved.

Thanks so much for the kind words. I'll admit that this 40 year old male strength coach cried as the clock was winding down to end the game.

  2. The fact of the matter is...11 and 24 were on the bench for a LONG time and cannon for whatever reason didnt take advantage of that. I give credit to the defense of the central girls that held cannon. Even when both came back in they stepped out of the way for cannon to score open layups. Perhaps you need to direct your anger to your "emotional" coach?????

Pumba, I am agreeing with your point. Not sure why you quoted me. It's just sour grapes with lionheart. Our top three scorers were all on the bench with foul trouble. Cannon shot 33 free throws. The free throw differential was Cannon 31 Central 19 until Cannon fouled three times at the end to stop the clock.

  3. True, Macon County is very big, but their big girls do not get up and down the floor very well. No disrespect intended - they are very good and one of them - who, by the way, may have one of the best names in AA baskeball - Calamity Jane Coley - has been hurt. But, on a good day you would not describe them as "fleet of foot."

The David Lipscomb Lady Mustangs do not have a lot of size except in one category - heart. They just keep finding ways to win when no one gives them a chance. On paper they come up short against a very talented and big McMinn team, but they did as well against Lewis County, Macon County and Sycamore. Although they ended up on the short end of the stick against Macon County (going to the free throw line for just 6 shots the entire game vs. Macon's 17 FTs), they just keep finding a way to win in elimination games.

No predictions here, I'm just saying don't pencil anyone in round 2 just yet.

Hope all of the teams have a safe trip to the 'Boro.

    GO LADY MUSTANGS!!

Anybody can win at Murfreesboro. Noone backs into the state tournament. All the teams remaining are good, and they all deserve to be there.

  4. It took me a while to get back on here. I've been trying to choke down that big plate of crow and still don't have it finished. Congratulations to Central on their big win. I very much agree the game was not even as close as the score indicated.

I don't believe you saw the same LA team last night that's been playing all year. Central had A LOT to do with that.-- About the LA defense:--Apparently when our girls left the dressing room after the Cannon co. loss at Sparta, they left the defense there and nobody missed it until last night. I went out to the team bus at halftime and looked for it, but it wasn't there. Called and had someone check LA school and it wasn't there. Nearest thing I can figure is, the LA defense is still wandering around in White co. somewhere looking for the team. If anyone sees it, please send it home. This season's over, but we'll be needing it next year.

This has become quite the rivalry due to all of our games (except for one) through the years coming in either the substate/sectional or state tournament. You guys have ended our season more than we have yours. Hopefully, we can even that up in the coming years.

I'm pretty closely affiliated with the program, and I didn't expect such a lopsided outcome. Our girls have been on quite a roll since the Cannon County loss during Thanksgiving break.

I'm sure we'll meet again. Until then, we've got a gold ball to go win!

  5. Don't believe I said anything about LA being invincible. I make my statement about the defense based on the fact that I watch a lot of teams play during a season, not just my favorite and not just 8AA. You have every right to disagree, but I believe I know a good defense when I see one in action. There's no doubt you have a great team, but go back and look over your schedule, then look at LA's. I seriously doubt that if you faced teams like Cannon co., Upperman, Jackson co., etc., night after night, you'd show only one loss and nearly as many thirty to forty point victories. The prediction that I made was mine. You have every right to make yours. Your team may win tomorrow night, then you can laugh all you please. If they do win they'll receive my congratulations, but win or lose, you will face the best defense that you've faced all year. :thumb:

Maybe the numbers are wrong, or the formula for calculating it is flawed, but according to this site, McMinn Central has played the 7th strongest schedule in AA. Two wins over #14 AAA Bradley Central who is in the substate; a win at AA Macon County who is in the substate; a double digit win over #2 ranked DII Knox Webb; three wins over #23 AA East Hamilton; a win over #16 AAA Tennessee high on a neutral court; and a win at #16 AA Chatttanooga Christian.

I'm not saying this means McMinn Central will win. I'm just saying that this is the strongest strength of schedule the Chargerettes have had in several years.

  6. Well, if we go back just one year we see that Region 3AA had two teams in the Final 4. Just because the local District and Region isn't quite as strong this year it doesn't mean Central never has to play anyone tough. And, as someone mentioned, Central had the 9th ranked toughest schedule in the state this year......so your claim is a little weak. I can assure you that Central respects who they will play in the substate. And being that Central has won the substate the last 4 years against an always tough Region 4AA team, they obviously know what it takes against good competition.

We lost to Livingston 4 years ago at home in the sectional/substate. We beat York at home three years ago. We beat Grundy at home two years ago. Last year we won at Cannon County.

  7. McMinn is a good team, but they never have to play anyone till they get to sub state. I noticed they even got a bye in the region. Region 7 AA don't have any byes (Gibson County, Obion County, Liberty, Mcnairy County, Westview, Bolivar, Dyersburg, Lexington) 6 out of them 8 teams could win it on any given weekend in the Boro. They better enjoy the Region cakewalk. Better tighten up starting Sat. night. I wish them well. I stayed at the same hotel last year as the coaches and players. Very deserving and classy bunch of coaches and fans. Good luck. Going to get tougher.

This year McMinn Central played the 9th toughest schedule in the state according to the schedule strength ratings on this site. That's the best we've had in at least 5 years.

  8. I can't find any scores for the semi-finals and I was just curious how this region was stacking up!

Because there was bad weather at 3pm in Chattanooga, the Hamilton County School Director cancelled all afterschool activities. As a result, the region 3a and 3aa games had to be postponed until tonight. All the bad weather was clear of the McMinn County (where the 3AA games were to be played) area by 4pm. I assume it was clear of the 3A site earlier than that because it is west of McMinn County. It appeared to me that the director jumped the gun.

  9. Hope Scantland from Jackson County held Kayla Biles to I think 11 points and Makinzee Sells to 4 points this year. The average fan don't understand that the level of competition you play should be a huge factor in the selection for this award.

I agree. Jenna Adams has played against the #7 rated schedule this year, and she's averaging a double/double.

  10. Howard has forfeited the game. There was a bench-clearing brawl after their loss to Brainerd on Monday. As a result of the multiple suspensions, they forfeited. Now the boys game between Howard and McMinn Central that was moved to Friday will be played at 7pm EST instead of 7:30 EST.

  11. I wouldn't be surprised to see East Hamilton finish second. They had 1050 students at the start of the school year, probably even more now, so they're fortunate to still be in Class AA-and they still will be two more years even if they gain a few more hundred. After that they will likely be in the Class AAA district with Walker Valley, Bradley and Cleveland.

  12. Most of the girls that come through the system are products of a very good AAU program...McMinn Fire. They also have a great S.& C. program. Team chemistry along with the coaching staff, Coach Johnny Morgan, (2011 TSSAA Hall of Fame inductee) and Coach Joe Young, are two of the best in the business. Central teams are never one dimentional either, there are a number of girls that can score and if you don't play defense...you don't play!

Johnny and Joe are great. Not so sure about the S&C program being great. :)

  13. It totally makes sense to come in just one day instead of two. I've been following McMinn Central for most of the season and the girls team is on a roll. We here in West TN would like to know more about MC program. I know from the State Tourney last year that Jenna Adams is one of the main offensive weapons and can block shots and rebound. Who else do we need to look for in the McMinn Central Lineup. I know they are on a mission after letting a 19 point 3rd qtr. lead get away in last year's title game to Gibson Co.

I'm From Obion County and the Lady Rebels of Obion Central have been state ranked for most of the year and just won the 13AA District Championship over defending champion Gibson Co and we're just trying to get a little more info on teams from that side of the state. Thanks and best of luck to you folks. :thumb:

We're just a small town school chucking up jump shots. Nothing to see here. :D

  14. Clevelan high school's girls basketball team upset #3 walker valley 48-40 in the district 5-AAA semi's, with a team of all sophomores and freshman and a great class coming up next year, cleveland will be a team to watch out for in the next coming years i think. But this was a win that i didn't see coming at all, i thought walker valley had a great chance at a state title.

If it was the district semis, they are still in the running for the state. The top four from each district qualify for the region.

First, thanks so much to all of you that post scores, check data, and love the game enough to make this possible. You all are fantastic and are the only reason I'm able to put anything online.

The post-season tournament brackets will be available again this year at jim314.com. There's some other information on jim314.com as well that you're free to check out, but just click on the 'brackets' link and you'll be in business.

    A few guidelines:

    1. Check to see if the information you're about to post is already up at jim314.com

    2. Don't post unless you know the data you are posting is correct

    3. Contact the tournament directors in your area to see if you can get an electronic copy of the district tournaments and then forward to me at jim314@yahoo.com

    4. Please post the following information:

    * final district regular season standings (not the wins/losses, just the final rankings--I use Excel spreadsheets to keep all of this straight and my brackets auto-populate based on the regular season district rankings)

    * dates/times for district games

    * corrections for any erroneous data on the brackets at jim314.com

    Other notes:

Brackets should be able to be printed and viewed in all major browsers on jim314.com. If you have compatibility issues, please email me at jim314@yahoo.com.

Lastly, I'm going to be helping out with an Extreme Makeover: Home Edition during the week of 02/13, so my response times will be delayed during the day. Most of the updates will occur during late evening and early morning.

Best of luck to all the teams,

    jim

Jim, I just checked the District 5AA girlls' bracket. The site is McMinn County High School. Only the two play-in games were held at McMinn Central due to a scheduling conflict. Also, Meigs girls defeated Sweetwater, and then McMinn Central girls defeated Meigs. McMinn Central will play Polk County in the championship, and Meigs plays Sequoyah in the consolation Monday.

    Thanks for all you do!

  16. McMinn Central has had some injury problems, hopefully either those players are better or their replacements in the rotation have stepped up. I'm surprised Polk is still in it after being upset by Meigs, then getting rolled over by a very good Walker Valley team.

Indian, Ashley Knox (sr pf), and Nakita Raper (jr pg) are both out for the year with acl tears. Kelsey Young (soph wing) should return within a week. She has made a miraculous recovery from meningitis.

  17. Good comment. Tennessee womens' basketball has come a very long way since 1980 (?) and the old three on three, half court game. Other than perhaps California and one or two other large states in terms of population, Tennessee teams have shown at every level that they can play with just about anyone. I had the good fortune of being in town for business reasons a couple of years ago when the NIKE tournament took place and I believe a TN team was ranked the second best by ESPN writers after the tourney. And this was the top ranked of the two December events. Memphis Central should have won the other tournament which preceded it but horrible calls determined the outcome of a critical game, costing MC a one point loss.

You guys are right. You can take your top 10 or 12 AAA players, drop the names in a hat and pull out five starters who make an all-star team. The girls are taller, more athletic in general now that they're allowed to run the court and play a complete game and many are truly student athletes. You couldn't guess I am a native Tennessean could you? But having lived in NY, CA, TX, KY and now GA and having worked for years abroad with the opportunity to watch boys and girls sporting events in the evening, I feel my comments are supported by the facts. So let's enjoy the playoffs, keep up the great, insightful comments and please ladies and gents, describe the games for those of us who live too far out of state to have the privilege of actually sitting in the stands and enjoying those games. I love hearing of games from A to AAA, east to west so even though I'm an east TN native with a small 'bias' for that area, it really doesn't matter. Love the playoffs except for one thing... it means another season has come and gone.

Jenna Adams of McMinn Central is pretty good, and she had a good state championship appearance last year. She is averaging close to 20 points this yr. (Her sophomore teammate, Elizabeth Masengil is also averaging close to 20.)

  18. Would like to congratulate polk co for having zero class..We cheered for yall in your first round game, yet in the championship game you sit in our section and cheer for gibson...I understand we're rivals but way to have no class..

Polk County kids were just jealous that they weren't good enough to make it the finals! That just shows they have NO class!!!!!!!!

Way to go Chargerettes on a great season and great game! You made us all proud of you!

Reading through these posts i found this one to be the most interesting. Seriously your worried about who someone cheers for? Why not worry that you blew a led of 19 points or be thankful that you made the championship game or that you had the easier road to the the championship, take your pick but don't start blasting a school for not liking you. I have no connection with polk county but i will be the first to say that i was glad you got beat and how it happened, because it makes you cocky enough to think that you were as good as Gibson county. When in reality, Gibson didn't play as good as I have seen them play all season.

"but i will be the first to say that i was glad you got beat and how it happened, because it makes you cocky enough to think that you were as good as Gibson county. When in reality, Gibson didn't play as good as I have seen them play all season."

The opposing team must not have had anything to do with Gibson playing a subpar game. At least that sound like what you are saying. McMinn Central had nothing to do with the game being close???? It was only because Gibson didn't play well? Give me a break.
