Exactly the two I had picked…wonder what has happened to Rockwood ?

    Great question.

Rockwood was historically not very good at baseball before dropping to single A in 98. Then they went to 7 state tournaments in 11 years and IMO had the best public single A team in the state twice.

In 09, they hired a guy from Florida and he was there for 11 years. It was a step-down success wise from the previous 2 coaches, but he did have some solid teams and made the state once.

He was relieved of his duties for some reason after the 2019 season.  Lane came back from Roane State and acted as a stop gap coach for 2 years & now they have a new first year HC this year.

I’m not sure if they will ever recapture what they had from 1999-08. Same for Harriman. They had their best 10 years at the same time as Rockwood and they seem to have fallen off as well.

UH is the favorite for sure. I meant to put that in my response. I could also see Hampton beating NG at least once. I think Coalfield is going to be one of the better teams in the east also.

Right now, Greenback and Coalfield will be the Region 2 schools advancing to the Sectionals.

I know things can change and injuries occur, but there is a clear gap between these 2 and the rest of Region 2 a quarter through the season.

  3. Rockwood played a COVID makeup game on Monday, so this will be their 3rd game in 7 days.

While they smoked Wartburg and Oakdale in those games, it will be interesting if fatigue plays a factor.

If McMinn Central can go up tempo on offense, tonight would be the night to do it.

Should be a good test next week, was a little surprised that Rockwood lost. If you play well, think you have a fairly good chance. I'm still trying to figure out who Quarterbacked last night, never heard the name before. He must have ran the offense pretty crisp.

Rockwood was up big, but lost their starting QB in the 4th quarter just as Sweetwater made their run. After that, Sweetwater just loaded the box and dared Rockwood to throw. Rockwood still scored a few points, but that definitely changed playcalling down the stretch. I never heard how bad the injury was.

  5. Can anyone that was at the North Greene Moore Co game explain the play that gave Moore the lead? The TSSAA box score indicates that with 2 outs, Pearson popped up to center field resulting in a fielders choice that scored 3 runs, but there was no errors and it wasn’t a hit. I assume the box is wrong, because that stumped an entire group of baseball fans, including a few former college players.

    This is funny

Besides my fat finger typo, the point remains.

Cashmeout insinuated that if Webb is RHS’s coach, MC will always win. That’s simply not the case. Besides the 9-8 game a few years ago in the playoffs, the more talented always win & if Webb’s team has more talent, he will beat MC. MC has just been the more talented team the past few years.

You guys should keep Webb forever. The team should be in the semis next year because region 1 & 2 will be a sad joke. Keep him so we can assure ourselves clinic bowl if we get to that round.

    Webb is 4-6 against Meigs.

When RHS has more talent, he is 3-0.

When MC has more talent, he is 1-6

He has never lost when RHS is the better team, but has beaten a more talented MC team.

In other words, MC won’t beat a John Webb coached team if RHS has more talent.

Rockwood was a team with a lot of talent, you have 1,2, 15, that could easily be a mr football finalists this year.  different school or different offense. If you got to see 20 run any he was pretty tough but didn't see much action.

Plus a number of other players that are talented but didnt see much action or limited opportunities. unless it was a must.

Is it time for something new or someone new all together?

    No.

John Webb has been the HC at Rockwood since 96. He is a RHS grad (was a very good player) and was an assistant at RHS. I do not know John well, but when I think RHS football over the past 30 years, I think John Webb.

RHS has been to the playoffs 12 straight years and almost always meets or exceeds expectations for the team/talent we have. There’s never been rule /TSSAA problems with John.

Outside of a 5 year run in the 70s and the 91/92 seasons, most of RHS’s best years have been under Webb.

Even with a different HC and offensive scheme, how much further would you expect them to advance with this year’s talent? That group of players is not getting through S. Greene and Meigs County no matter who is coaching.

Rockwood will not change coaches nor should they. Webb can name his retirement date.

I'll admit it wasnt what I expected to see, but I'll take it. We kept trying to put it away with a 35 point lead so we could get a running clock, but Rockwood managed to score later in the game to hinder us from it. #1 was a ballplayer for Rockwood. He kept it interesting with a few good plays for sure.

I understand trying to get to 35+.

My dad loves to tell a story from that 68 RHS season.  They lost 71-0 to Kingston. Rockwood had a chance to score at the end of the game, but Kingston put their starting D back in to keep the shutout. Old timers never forgave that. I can remember them begging coach to run it up on Kingston in 92 for payback. Old grudges die hard.

Friday, while a beat down, had a different feel than that.

  10. David Lane is back as HC and Joey Cofer is back as assistant. That pair lead Rockwood to the state tournament multiple times and really made Rockwood a perennial single A contender from 99-the early 2010s.

First question - What happened to Witter? The local paper said “unforeseen circumstances”, but provided no details.

Second question- Will Rockwood play Kingston again? They haven’t played since 2011. That was the biggest game on Rockwood’s schedule through the 80/90s in baseball.

  11. I just prefer the Georgia model. They have 8 regions and the top 4 teams from the regular season go to the playoffs (no regional tournament). So that would be like our 16 districts sending the top 2 teams from the regular season.

32 teams play best 2 of 3 series all the way. They start the playoffs the week of April 23rd and have a series per week (doesn't wear out pitching) because they start allowing a few weeks earlier than we do.

    Or

I would like to see us get rid of District tournaments, take the top 2 teams from district regular season, have a 4-team regional double elimination tournament (this year, theweek of May 7th), have a week off to rest pitching, then have the Spring Fling like normal.

The single elimination Regional semi-finals and sectional game is idiotic.

I completely agree we should have the same number of classifications in baseball/basketball as football.  I personnally think 6 is too many (Georgia has 6 as well, but has about 200 more schools). I think 4 or 5 in all sports.
