    Who does Coalfields NfHS? One of the guys said he went to Bethel.

    BBB Communications out of Oak Ridge.  James "Hoot" Gibson or Coach Gibson was doing the color (he was a football player and coach and attended Bethel), while Aaron Harvey was doing play by play.  First exclusive NFHS game we have done, was asked by the Network to do it for them.

    Normally we cover Anderson, Roane and Morgan County teams during the season.  We actually tried to do the Anderson County game but it was already on the network, that's when they asked us to do the Coalfield vs. Clay County game for them.  Said that it was the only way I was going to be able to broadcast the game since someone else was pending.

    I'll take a try at showing where last night's show can be found..

  3. Each District has a set of by-laws and have their own rules for breaking ties.  I know our district used the SEC method for 3-way ties.

    "

    2. Three-Team Tie (or more): If three teams (or more) are tied for a division title, the following procedure will be used in the following order: (Note: If one of the procedures results in one team being eliminated and two remaining, the two-team tiebreaker procedure as stated in No. 1 above will be used):

    A. Combined head to head record among the tied teams;

    B. Record of the tied teams within the division;

    C. Head to head competition against the team within the division with the best overall Conference record (divisional and non divisional) and proceeding through the division (multiple ties within the division will be broken from first to last and a tie for first place will be broken before a tie for fourth place);

    D. Overall Conference record against non divisional teams;

    E. Combined record against all common non divisional teams;

    F. Record against the common non divisional team with the best overall Conference record (divisional and non divisional) and proceeding through other common non divisional teams based on their order of finish within their division; and

    G. Best cumulative Conference winning percentage of non-divisional opponents (Note: If two teams' non-divisional opponents have the same cumulative record, then the two-team tiebreaker procedures apply. If four teams are tied, and three teams' non-divisional opponents have the same cumulative record, the three-team tiebreaker procedures will be used beginning with 2.A.);

  4. Boys only, looking for as many as 5 games. Willing to travel if not too far out of East Tennessee.  Please contact Head Coach Daniel Byrd at 865-435-7332 or email at byrdd@mcsed.net.  Willing to play up in competition.  Will need to be after the first week of December.

  5. So what games are being played tonight? Coalfield/oneida? Sun bright/OS? Are these still on?

    The Oneida at Coalfield game has been rescheduled to Thursday, February 4th.  JV at 5pm, 6:30pm girls, 8pm boys.

    Coalfield's remaining schedule

    1/25 at Sweetwater

    1/26 Sunbright

    1/29 at Oliver Springs

    2/2 at Oneida

    2/4 Oneida

    2/5 at Jellico

    2/8 Sweetwater

    2/9 Karns

    And going back to the GCA comment about playing when there is no school.  Today is an example of that...no school in Morgan County because of the icy back roads in Sunbright, but we had 1/2" of snow Friday (if that) and it was all gone by Saturday for the most part.  As you can see we already have 2 of the final 3 weeks with 3 games in it...if you start postponing games now, there's about no way you can make them up.  You have to start dropping games.  So it's a matter of HAVE to now.  Just like last years district tournaments...we don't want to lose out on them.

  6. Finishing up that game later is interesting...

    1) I'm assuming that only the players on the books for that night can play now (no players "back from injury" could participate at this point)

    2) What if a player is injured now, and it affectes the outcome?

    3) Do they have the same refs from that night?

    4) Do they have to pay for refs again?

    To answer your questions the best I know the answers:

    1.  If they weren't on the books that night they will not be able to play.

    2.  Injuries are part of the game.  Unfortunately, they happen and you hope both teams are healthy before and after.

    3.  We have 2 of the 3 same officials.  Lance Treadway can't be there that night, so another official has been assigned.

    4.  We have to pay the officials $25 each.  Security also.  But this is why we are having it after a Middle School game, to help alleviate some of the costs.

    Hope that helps you.

  7. You missed the total point! But we will shut up and keep winning. And I do believe that Meigs DID choose where to play, I think the TSSAA gave them the choice to stay Double A or move down to Single A. I think they were real close to the cut off limit. And just like you talked about the AAA team that beat them...bigger schools have a bigger advantage...it's simple. Not making excuses...we play 3 AAA games this year, 3 AA games as well, so we don't try to back down from the bigger competition.

  8. You know, I would hope that Meigs is better than everyone else because they're 2 or 3 times bigger than most of the Morgan County schools. Coalfield has 170 students in high school, you might have 1/2 boys, 1/2 girls, that leaves 85 boys to play 3 sports, and not every kid plays sports. A school of 500 kids would probably have 250 male athletes to choose from. So they should be better than the smaller schools. And the private school debate is not one I want to start on!

    Yes Harriman is a very good team and both teams had played 3 straight days so legs were an issue. But Coalfield never gave up, was down 18 but went up as many as 11. The stats for the game were almost identical, so you may say that Harriman is better than Coalfield...but they sure looked about even stat wise.

    Coalfield is down 1-starter and has another one with a bad knee. They went from being 10 or 11 deep down to 7 or 8 deep with a lot of freshman and sophomores. So don't count Coalfield out yet!

  9. Brad, why does the Morgan County Central Office control the thermostat at each school? Is there not an option to over-ride the system?

    That was a power savings plan that was put in a few years ago.  All the Coke machines, the lights, are all on motion detectors...if no movement, they turn off.  The Central Office has a computer that controls the climate at all the schools as well...none of that control is at the schools.  We can turn the thermostat 3 degrees in either direction, but we can't turn it on or off and if it's set for 80, 3 degrees is not going to help much.  I'm hoping they start changing that some, however I went in the gym last night for middle school game and it was hot in there again...and it's not heat on, just body temperature rise.

  10. Court had too much moisture on it. Players were sliding everywhere. Talked to some Oakdale players & they said it was awful out there. Coalfield got a new court design this summer. That had to have something to do with it.

    Nope! What happened was that the Central Office didn't turn the air on as requested and it was about 80-85 in the gym with people in there. Hot and humid! So someone propped a door open and what happens when you mix cold air with hot humid air? Condensation!!! The floor was slick...it's happened before. They have to start leaving the AC on or give us control of it. Some button pusher could have cost the county MILLIONS In a lawsuit because they were trying to save a few dollars by turning the AC up to 78 or higher. But it's happened on our older floor as well. Hot humid air and cold air don't mix.

  11. Well thats good stats, hope he keeps improving for yall

    Parker McKinney had 16 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists and 2 blocks for his 3rd Triple Double of the season and his 2nd consecutive. The kid is good for 15-20 points by just being on the floor. He's either creating a shot for himself or drawing help side defense and dumping it off for another assist. He really is as good as advertised. I guarantee any coach in the district or region would love to have him on their team!

  12. With what happen in the stands between coalfield and Clinton The other night   will  tssaa look at this I know coalfield has been on probation with the stuff that  went on in football and baseball

    Please get your facts straight before you post nonsense like this!!!!  The fight was between two students from Clinton...NO ONE FROM COALFIELD was involved!  Then two parents got involved.  As this fight got closer to our bench, I told the boys to get up and move to the other side of the court to avoid having ANY involvement if it spilled out of the stands.  When the officials called the game, we sent them STRAIGHT to the locker room.  There was no bad blood between the two teams as they circled and held hands and prayed for Austin just 10 minutes before all of this happened.

    Again, I ask that you get all of the facts BEFORE you post!  We don't need this kind of nonsense out there.

    And yes...I'll tell you who I am, I don't hide behind a facade on message boards.  This is Brad Jones, assistant boys coach at Coalfield and GM of BBB Communications, LLC. in Oak Ridge.

  13. This is a brief account of what happened from close relations to the situation. Balcom was, from all accounts, a good teacher, we'll liked and respected by the administration, staff, kids @ the school, on the basketball team, and community, hard worker, ran a Christian Club, and did a really good job as a basketball coach @ TPHS. They won 20 games, finished well in a tough district, and made the region tourney in his first year with a mostly Junior laden team. Majority of the team comes back...including 4 starters. Balcom left on his own because he was not supported from Central Office. Specifically, the Superintendent of schools in Monroe County. From my understanding, he wanted to punish a player for not showing up to summer camps and was supported by the school administration (AD and Principal), BUT the kids parents complained to Superintendent and he was then told he couldn't punish the player (running, playing time, etc...). Superintendent stepped over the AD and principal decision on the matter. He basically had lost any power to be a true coach anymore. Certain players and parents could now run the team by complaining about anything they wanted to the Superintendent. By the way, par for the course in Monroe County. This has happened to other coaches as well, which is why they have and always will have a hard time attracting and keeping good coaches. Thee parents of the kid and the Superintendent, for all practical purposes, would now be the coaches of the team. Fairly certain there was some heavy politics involved with the Superintendent and the kids parents that complained (good Ole boy stuff). He was not asked to leave, but felt he would not have any leg to stand on as a coach. Can't punish players, you have no authority to run a program. Or he would have just been a "yes" man to those parents and the Superintendent. He started looking for job openings and took the opportunity that presented itself at a great school like Bearden. In fact, the AD and principal completely understood why he chose to leave the situation. I know the administration @ the school, some school board members that learned what happened, and many parents were not happy with his departure and aren't very fond of the Superintendent for it.

    Don't blame him one bit!!!

  14. Hey I missed this thread some how???? I dont know as much about Oakdales region as I do ours so I am picking Oakdale there based on Maverick.

    In our region yea It will come down to GCA and Meigs. Here is the thing guys..... Our two new freshman Gettlefinger and Ledford are as good as anyone on the team or at least comparable to what we lost. Kobe and Luke were good no doubt. Losing Kobe Kellys fire and competitive will is unmeasurable.

    Arnold is getting better and better, at least I think so. He is now 6-8 1/2 and 207 lbs. but seeing how we are related and all, I'll let others comment on him lol. Gettlefinger will run the point at 6-3 and Ledford 6-3 is a two year younger and smaller version of Arnold. He is a good good young player. The football guys will be missed early but when Andrews, Wyndham, and Hensley get back we will be formidable dare I say better and more athletic. Add in senior John Holland at 6-4 and our new junior 6-5 transfer from Texas and we are for sure bigger this year.

    Meigs has a great coach and talemted team. Meadows in my book is what is great about HS basketball. I love that kids effort and toughness. ZY is ZY we all know his book and they always have like 8 three point shooters on the team.....

    So I am picking it

    1-GCA Armold and company get it done! Back to state

    2- Meigs plays it hard and I think gets back to state. It is possible both teams could make it. I hope so anyway

    3- Harriman good athletes and Johnson is back but how good will they be?

    4- Tellico - scrappy and the most intense coach in the league seriously .....

    5- Rockwood, Midway, Greenback, and Concord just wont be very good I fear. They will battle for the basement

    So who is Tellico's new coach?

    Grace will be the biggest team in Single A, sounds like, at least in East Tennessee.
