1. This weekend Siegel entertains and hosts the "Back to the Boro" volleyball weekend. While the first of a series of Tournaments, Siegel welcomes numerous schools to this first on Friday and Saturday.

Who will be the top teams in this weekend's tournament?

Lafayette(KY) was runner-up to Karns in the Rocky Top

    tournament last weekend.

Who won the Sonic Blast tournament last weekend at Franklin?

  2. They also lost twice in a season opening tournament in Lexington and 3 times

in a tournament hosted by Cincinnati's Mother of Mercy. That does not take any

thing away from the fact that they are a very talented team who has played a

    killer of a schedule.

  3. By my count on the KHSAA web page the Henry Clay Blue Devils are 24-11.

They are the best team in Lexington right now and have a D-1 signee in Abell,

but there is no way they are 37th. in the country. At best they are 6th or 7th in

KY behind the Louisville and NKY privates and Louisville Manual who beat them

in a Huntsville, AL tourney. All credit to them though for playing a very tough

schedule that has taken them to 3 big out-of-state tournaments in TN, AL, and OH.

  4. Doubt you'll see many college coaches they're all playing somewhere this weekend. A nice field nonetheless.

    My Final Four

    Brentwood Grissom,DB and Hutchison

With DB and Grissom in the finals and... Grissom prevailing... too many cradle club volleyball players in Huntsvegas!!!

Watch out for Paul Dunbar HS from Lexington, KY. Lots of club players. Down some from last year. Their MB from last season is playing for Lipscomb--Katie Rose.

  7. Please look at the post above by 317 as he would like to make contact with you in case there is an opening. Generally Speaking, you did not answer my post so I hope you look at this post. This is a solid tournament.

I am with Lexington (KY) Lafayette. We have played in the Page/Centennial Tournament in the past

as well as the LaVergne Tournament of Champions. We played in the Mountain Empire Classic last year

and are currently entered in it this year as well. We have a conflict on the weekend of 9/27 and are looking

for something either Labor Day weekend or the weekend of 9/20.

  8. One of the premier Tournaments is the father Ryan Invitational If someone would post the schools in this tourney and the matchups by day and time and then post the scores as they occur, it would be appreciated. There is major interest in this tournament from all over the state. This is considered a major HS Tournament that many look to as to trends of Tennessee Volleyball.

    Father Ryan, Centennial,

Does this tournament have any openings?

  9. The great Mt. Empire Classic will be at Science Hill. Any one who has those playing, Please post the teams and if you can post the results, please do so. Science Hill Tennessee High, Greenville

Do you have confirmation that this will be the date for this tournament?

We've had trouble confirming with the school during the summer.

  10. KYDigs makes a good point. If Lafayette is 4th in their district in Lexington, KY, then they must be very very weak. Lexington still has not come up to par with Northern KY and Louisville. Middle Tennessee is more comparable to Northern Kentucky teams (Notre Dame is the exception as they would crush all TN teams) So, if AC and Knox Cath only beat them in 3, then they must not be that good. So, I may have to rethink the top 20.

At 26-11 this year's Lafayette team is not on par with last year's final four team but far from weak.

Lexington's best teams are definitely on a par with the best PUBLIC school teams from Louisville and Northern KY. Still no match for the Louisville privates who are still a couple of notches above the NKY privates. Lafayette did beat Science Hill in the Empire Classic ( Ranked 94th in PrepVolloeyball Top 100 at the time). The two losses to Dobyns-Bennett were hard fought and very close. I would certainly put both Science Hill and Dobyns-Bennett up against the best Nashville-Area teams we played in 2005 and 2006. (Lavergne, Siegel in 2006; Centennial and Independence in 2005) We have always enjoyed our experiences playing in TN the past 4 seasons and love to have Anderson Co. come and play in the Lafayette Invitational. Good luck to all as your state playoffs approach.

The coaches in KY just released their 2nd Top 20 Poll of the season as we head into the district playoffs and it is populated with the usual suspects. It's nice having the poll even if it's just for the sake of arguments.

  11. Does anybody know the final results of this tournament?

Dobyns-Bennett beat Lexington (KY) Lafayette in 3 to win the tournament.

They had also beaten Lafayette in 3 during pool play. Lafayette finished 2nd

in their pool and defeated Sullivan Central and Science Hill to set up the rematch

with Dobyns-Bennett. I was very impressed with D-B. Their freshman setter was

amazing and they had a couple of powerful hitters that got into rhythm and we

couldn't stop them. Both Lafayette and Dobyns Bennett played without key

contributors who were hurt last week. I understand that their OH will be back in

4 or 5 weeks but our SR MB was lost for the season with a torn ACL.

The coaches for both Science Hill and Dobyns-Bennett have great teams and I can

understand the level of the battles they've had so far this season. Good luck to both

and thanks for the tremendous hospitality of the Science Hill parents and coaching staff.

Just for the fun of it I asked the coach if she had ever been contacted by the people that picked this award and she said never. She had no imput and had never recieved any information about it. So the people who control this award have never asked the states high school volleyball coaching icon for her opinion.

I guess 43 years of coaching and almost 1300 wins don't count for much.

All this award means is the player that gets it is the Impacts player of the year. Not the states. Look at the post of the last 4 of 5 winners. How did a kid from Memphis be allowed to win last year. The club people in Nashville really slipped up.

There are over 10,000 HS VB teams nationwide. There may be some coaches who's opinions are solicited but for the most part PrepVolleyball get's its information from a proactive constituency.

That led to 13 TN HS's being ranked in the top 536 in the country. If you read the website it is acknowledged to not be an exact science. Outside the top 100 it is mostly ceremonial. But the ranking is based on feedback from HS coaches, not club. TN rankings include:

    79 Brentwood

    125 Father Ryan

    127 Sullivan South

    195 Baylor

    196 Franklin

    301 Ooltewah

    302 GPS

    351 Notre Dame

    378 Farragut

    394 Knoxville Catholic

    418 Collierville

    535 Greenbriar

    536 East Ridge

I'm sure Anderson is conspicuous by it's absence, but they did finish last season ranked # 519.

I've included my own post regarding these rankings on PrepVolleyball and John's response.

    My question regarding KY Volleyball.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is Kentucky volleyball except for the 3 teams at the top considered weak? 10 teams out of 715 while Tennessee, for example, gets 13.

I know that Lexington Lafayette appreciates the recognition at # 580. We've won tournaments in the Nashville area each of the last 2 years. We've won our own tournament the last 2 years over a field that has included TN A-AA power Anderson County.

I'm just curious about John's overall perception of TN vs. KY.

I know a lot of KY teams that I 've seen over the last couple of years that I would take to TN and a lot of other places and take care of business.

I'm also curious as to how teams can be evaluated/judged relative to others when their won-loss records are N/A.

With all the disclaimers, I understand and appreciate all that John does for this sport. How hard he works and how supportive he is of all the girls is not in doubt.

    JT's Response

    Re: KY Volleyball

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes it is, but it is getting better. Tennessee doesn't have the trio of elite teams, but it's top 20 would compete very, very favorably against Kentucky's top 20, at least from my vantage point, which includes a trip to the Ky state tourney in 2005.

Maybe he should make a trip to Murfreesboro next season.

Is this award for the high school player of the year or the club player of the year?

If it is for the high school player of the year then you re telling me that a person that hasn't seen a single highschool volleyball game in the state of Tennessee picks the player of the year?

I would say that you are correct. The person picking the player of the year probably didn't see a single game of TN HS volleyball. He also managed to rank 13 TN teams in his top 700 HS teams of 2006. He gets tremendous amounts of feedback from any HS coach that chooses to respond to his requests for information.

  15. QUOTE(play4keeps @ Jan 18 2007 - 06:59 PM) 826336809

And I know, from past experience, that John is very connected to all the big national clubs and tournaments (I met him some years ago at a qualifier). I imagine that if a coach wanted to get a player some recognition it's as simple as sending him an email because I have found him to be very open and fair-minded.

Thanks for copying that post. The prepvolleyball.com message boards and website are great tools!

Whitney Cogburn, of Sullivan South, is one of the finalists for the Andi Collins Award given by John and PrepVolleyball.com for the nations best setter. Good luck to her. It is a tremendous honor to be one of the finalists.

  16. QUOTE(bratman @ Jan 16 2007 - 10:23 PM) 826334240

Who picks this award? I would have thought from what I read here that the setter from sullivan south was the states best player.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

John Tawa of Prep Volleyball.com evidently made the selections. He is the HS volleyball guru and does receive a lot of help from the HS coaches around the country. Below are his comments from a web forum posting.
