  1. I'm just glad that the TSSAA got the bumper stickers right. Remember in '94 I think it was when they printed up state champion sticker in green for the South Pittsburg Hawks?

As for McKenzie getting better, a stronger non-region schedule helps. South Pittsburg only had one tough game in the regular season, much like McKenzie. It is off season conditioning and leadership on the team that does more good. That is what helped get South Pittsburg through this year. That and a team coming together as one unit and not caring who got the glory. A loss like this one will help the players and the staff prepare for next year. Coach Comer seemed like a class act on his interviews all season. If they all keep working hard their time will come. Especially after looking at their roster and seeing that they have a lot of Freshmen and Sophomores.

Just curious----SP was a very "athletic looking" team. What type of weight / conditioning / summer program do the Pirates have?

  2. theyoungtiger,

I have to say that it was VERY tough to watch that game yesterday from the stands!!!! Especially knowing that our offense sputtered for 3 quarters before coming to life in the 4th. No doubt, SP's speed on defense had a lot to do with it but, a lot of the lack of offensive production was our own making too. We didn't enjoy taking that whippin' but, it was great just to get there!!!

maybe we can all do this again sometime in the near future and see how it goes. I believe that South Pittsburg is setting in pretty good shape for a little while and wouldn't count them out of the running next season. They are one of the best high school football teams I've ever seen in ANY class!!!

I'm thinking the matchups yesterday would have been better if SP had played Alcoa and we had played Goodpasture.

South Pittsburg is without a doubt the best single A team in Tennessee. Had McKenzie played their A game, the score would have been a little closer, but the Pirates would have still won. Great season Rebels. When you walk by the trophy case and see the silver ball, let it not only serve as a reminder of how far the program has come but let it also remind you there is work to be done. Two travesties: 1.That no running back from the Pirate team was named Mr. Football and 2.Murfreesboro seems unable to handle the traffic and the parking of a Friday afternoon game. Again, congratulations to the Rebels for a great season and to the South Pittsburg Pirates for claiming the single A state title.

  3. Yeah, they showed a couple of offensive plays of ours including Tyler's first TD run but, they filmed into the 3rd quarter!!!

If ya'll will remember back in '01 when we were 13-0 and getting ready to play Memphis Mitchell in the semi's the Jackson press said that the Rebels just might be for real IF we won that game back then. Personally, I think it's funny that their rag of a paper and back room TV station are that bias!!!

Really, who cares??? We're not playing for Jackson media attention. We are playing and supporting for US!!!! Everyone in Mtown is having fun with this playoffs and that is what matters. The Rebels ARE for real and eveybody else best prepare for that.

    GO REBELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    FINISH THE JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Correction Duck. In 2001 the Rebs were 13-0 and were getting ready to play Martin Westview in the semis. It was 2002 when they played Mitchell.

  4. Carr is a very good qb and will do fine. Overall, McKenzie may be a better team in 06.

In the past four years, McKenzie scored only 28 total points against Huntingdon. This year, we put 31 on the board with Carr tossing three TD passes. Running game is a factor this year. McKenzie is definitely an improved team and the kids are playing as a unit. Best of luck to the Rebels for the remainder of the season.

  5. Congratulations to the McKenzie Rebels. Best team effort we have had in several years. After the first Huntingdon possession, I thought it was lights out for the Rebs. However, you fought back and regained and most importantly HELD the lead. Great job by Carr, his receivers and running backs and offensive line. Merrick and Fussell et. al, played great on defense along with the defensive backs. Again, great job!!

  6. George was like my little brother when we were growing up. My senior season was his freshman season at McKenzie. He was a good one and tough as a pine knot!!!! Not many out there tough enough to play defensive end for four seasons in the SEC weighing only 215-220 lbs.. During those years he was listed as the smallest DE in the SEC. And I'm pretty sure he was a starter for 3 seasons at Vandy.

The Vandy roster had him listed at 211. He made the All-SEC sophomore team, and received many accolades his sophomore and junior years. In a game against Tennessee, he was all over the UT quarterback (Jimmy Maxwell--I think) He was selected as pre-season All-SEC his senior year, but contracted mono and saw limited playing time. He is now a successful insurance broker in Georgia.

  7. I hope the Rebs can post a victory. Looking at the past few years, I see big stats, but not many points scored. I don't see the Rebels posing much of a threat with their running game unless they can get outside. I think if the Rebs are successful passing, it will be because of the short pass and utillizing the speed of the receiver. I don't believe Huntingdon will allow Carr to have a lot of time to find his deep receivers----if they watch the JCS film, they will see what pressure did to Hayes last year. I have read that Reb supporters are touting our kickoff returns----that might be a way to score. With our weak kickoff coverage, it might be a way for the Mustangs to score also. Regardless of the outcome, I hope the Rebs give 100% and leave it all on the field. May each team avoid the injury bug.

  8. I agree with most of what you said except that no 1A school could match your offense last year. I believe the Lake County McKenzie score proves you wrong on that. Rebels 54 Falcons 53 with a failed 2 pt conversion with no time left in the game. Sound like a pretty good match up to me. No doubt, McKenzie had a hot offense but so did Lake County. We had over 500 yard rushing and the rebels over 500 passing in that game. No doubt McKenzie won 54-53 but Lake County's offense was right up there with a hot McKenzie offense and we look forward to your trip to Tiptonville where we expect another shoot out. In the meant time we are looking forward to your match up with Union City. We let that one slip away after a 21-0 lead at the half.

Lake County did match McKenzie's offense last year as did Union City and JCS. Honorable mention goes to Gleason who scored 40 points on the Rebels.

  9. Last year we didn't have a DEFENSE, but outscored most opponents. This year we have no DEFENSE and can't score. Do our coaches not think DEFENSE is important? Maybe we need to play some of the Freshmen at DEFENSE, as they did a good job last year. Once again DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

McKenzie's offensive line can't block. The defense can't tackle. This problem did not begin this year. We have two former head coaches on staff. Are they not getting the job done, or are they not being ALLOWED to get the job done?

  10. :)

I guess im in last year withdrawls. But anyone who knows bugs knows hes a teamplayer even though i may not be. Im a true rebel fan, and would love to see the rebels win it all God knows it's been a long time coming no matter who catches, or runs the ball. I just want all the weapons used.

I have no doubt that Bugs Smith is the best athlete on the team, and he should be used to his full potential. You mentioned using all the weapons----I am still in wonderment about why Keegan Ball was pulled out of the backfield last year after he pounded for good yardage and several touchdowns in the first 3 or four games. He was getting good yardage and then BOOM we start running a no back offense. Go figure. With a balanced passing and running game, the Rebs should have a good year. Pass defense needs to tighten up, and kick off coverage HAS to improve. Correct those problems, and we can make some noise.

  11. lets hope that the coach is a magician and he is trying to hide bugs and not that carr is a panicky quarter back who can only throw to the side lines. Friday night against peabody will tell...

What difference does it make who he throws to if the play gains yardage? Smith is a great receiver---and he might be double covered which will allow someone else to be open. Score and win games---play team ball.

  12. The Carr kid is going to be the real deal. Maybe this year we will utilize some running backs and not throw the ball ever down. Hopefully we will develop a defense this year. Go Rebels and good luck against Trenton Peabody.

I agree. Carr will be just fine, and the Rebels don't need to pass the ball every down like last year. One dimentional teams don't get very far in the playoffs, as the Rebs found out against JCS when their hats were handed to them. The Rebs must beef up the defense and would someone please correct the woeful problem of kick-off coverage?

  13. McKenzie wins 2-0 ....strike out the final out .....

McKenzie wins State 1A...Minor gets his first and only loss of the year ...Hayes pitched a great game ...

Congratulations to the Rebels and coaching staff. Well done.

  14. Bottom of 4th ...1 out ...two runners on base after hit to left. Forrest has 3 errors so far. Minor has 5 strike outs today ....now with 2 outs. McKenzie takes a 2 run lead after hit to right. Now 2-0 in bottom of 4th with 2 outs with a runner on 1st

6 strike outs for Minor after 2 Forrest errors ....McKenzie leads 2-0 heading into the top of the 5th

Keep it coming, Voldad. Can't pick it up on radio. Thanks for the updates.

  15. these sound like some awsome players bye there overall highschool record but what positions will they be looking to play at when the come to bethel.

Bethel has signed some excellent players, and they are getting many prospects from the West Tennessee area. The Cat's new stadium and facilities will be first class---one of the best small college stadiums in the state. Any kid who is interested in playing at the D-3 level should take a look at Bethel College.

As far as positioning, I am sure Bethel will recruit to fill positions and then convert receivers and running backs to defensive backs etc. as needed.

  16. really appreciate it duckman...if theres one thing that you can be proud of for playing football at mckenzie high school, its that you know you got a second "family" that never dies. Coaches that are like fathers, Teamates that are like brothers, and excellent die hard fans that are there for best or worst times. I'm pretty sure i speak for the rest of the seniors, but we would like to say "Thanks To All" who supported us and the team this year, it was fun! Goodluck to next years team, work hard in the weight room guys cause that is where champions are made.

Pruitt---you thought about playing at the next level? I believe you would make a fine receiver. Give it a shot.

  17. Please tell me that is not the big stinger....Is there even a place in Carroll Co to receive higher education? All the Martin folks use Carroll Co for is to get to the Interstate! :thumb: Why stop in Carroll Co, nothing is there!

The last time I stopped in Carroll Co, it was at that podunk Super WalMart (nothing special about this one, other than it is open late) to pick up some formula for the baby with the Wizard. That "formula" caused us to lose the state championship game...I haven't forgot it, and neither has HeavyD!

Wesley, how does one get to your high school football field? And, a nice sign next to your cheerleading championship sign could say: MARTIN: GATEWAY TO OBION COUNTY. By the way, are you old enough to remember when UTMB was known as the baby Vols? Then they were the Pacers. Now they are the Skyhawks. What are they going to be next?

  18. Not defensive at all...this is a year long tangle with reignydayz! He seems to think Donald is too good to come to UT-Martin. I think he would fit in perfectly over here, as things are changing! He seems to think he is going big time! Which could very well happen!

  19. Its nice to see you using the Jimmy Whitby school of math....

Lake County will not get "blowed" out......Mckenzie can't stop anybody, and that will prove to be the difference in the game.....Lake County by 2 tds....

You are correct. A blind man could attend a Mckenzie game and see what the problem is. McKenzie lacks fundamental football skills. The offensive line can't block and the defense can't tackle. The offensive line's first move is to stand straight up. Their second move is to take a step back. This does not mean that the linemen are not good players. This means they have not been taught the fundamentals of run blocking. Why the defense can't tackle is beyond me. This is something a kid learns in backyard football. It is not that hard to teach the defense to attack the ball. Kegan Ball is the only player on the defense that understands this premise, and I am positive that he learned this at Huntingdon. A team has to be two dimentional if they are going to go far in the playoffs. I look for the Rebs to be beaten by Lake County and then whip up on Gleason and South Fulton. I also predict that they will play only one game in the playoffs. I am a McKenzie fan, but something big is missing in the scheme of things. We may set state records, but without the wins, who cares?
