  1. Y'all are doing a good job of breaking down the semis in the jv div....let's get some discussion going on the two projected mans div semis.

It is very interesting how some DI guys get on this thread and belittle the DII teams. Too bad! Wrestlinggod, go back to the peewee division. :roflol:

  2. Coach, I think you know what is being asked. You can not place, nor can you accept a medal for a tournament if you do not weigh in on Saturday morning. Let's be real.

Also, where is Michael Kennedy? I know that he was hurt and missed the season; however, is he able to wrestle now and if so, will he wrestle for you? What is he doing now? Is he still scheduled to go to UTC? Can you give us an update on him.

hoosierdad I heard Kennedy may not be going to UTC after all. My guess is that he will be wrestling for MTSU next fall. I also heard he was ready to wrestle now. I can't wait to see what he does at the Dixie Duals. The Murfreesboro team is loaded! Good luck guys.

  3. Just though you would like to know that most all officals in the TSSAA and the AAU are dads.(Though I wouldnt mind seeing some "Moms" step up and put the stripes on)

Come on and try it out for yourself, you might be good at it. Cause you see it doesnt matter if you make great calls or not... many times someones gonna have a problem with it. Thats wrestling. ;)

    TNKO2

You are right about mom's officiating. It sure would add a new demention to the sport and probably keep bear cat brown around for a few more years. However, the TSSAA officials go through more training than do any AAU officials and I think you would agree to that. I have been to way too many AAU tournaments and had dads of wreslters officiating the tournament who have not had much training at all if any. On the other hand, the TSSAA officials should have more training and therefore be better at the job. That is what I didn't see from my perch in the stands this weekend.

  4. I was asked by several folks last night to provide the following Bradley information. Here it is......

    First state place winner - 1982 - Ron Johnson - 4th

First State Champion - 1984 - Steve Logsdon

First Tournament OW Award - Heath Eslinger - 1995

Most people in Chattanoga area will know this, but Steve Logsdon is the current coach at Bradley Central and Heath Eslinger is the coach at UT Chattanooga.

Are Heath Eslinger and Steve Logsdon on speaking terms now? I knew there was very bad blood between them when Eslinger left to be an assistant at UTC. Logsdon didn't like that at all.

  5. Who was the classy MBA wrestler who won by pin, ran to the Father Ryan cheering section, flexed and threw up some type of hand gesture to taunt the Irish faithful?

Yes I was suprised at the spunk of the mba wrestler. Kind of reminded me of the old ryan boys who use to harass the mba fans. Yep a real suprise. Didn't know mba had any kids like that.

  6. Speaking with a friend from Nashville last evening I was told that Blackman had 5+ starters out of the lineup. If Blackman is not going to send their best wrestlers to the match why would you even schedule a team like Father Ryan?

My question would be, why would Ryan ever schedule Blackman again?

Why stop at Blackman. I wouldn't schedule Independence either. It is a shame to see coaches schedule matches and not feel obligated to bring their teams or their better wrestlers. What a disgrace to the coaching field. It looks like Ryan wasted dates on these two schools.

  7. No one would be stoping them from taking a vacation the whole Summer if that is what they want to do. However, why would you punish the coach & team that want to outwork their competition?

CBG, I think you are a big fan of Dan Gable from your earlier post. What do you think Gable would say?

  8. Murphy took the same number of shots that Simpson took, Simpson just kept pushing towards the edge of the mat the whole match. Simpson did not score a single takedown except off of one of Murphy's shots? Murphy did get hit for stalling once and Simpson was awarded a point, it might not have been a great display of wrestling, but it got the job done in a match where pins were crucial.

Freestyle you must be kidding. I at this point can't believe a word the Ryan faithful say. A few weeks ago you bash the Cash kid from BA for beating Marketti and all you say is he stalled and how pathetic he was for stalling. Now you say when Ryan does it you are using good strategy. I am getting to believe what the Blackman folks say about you guys. You guys are something else. As far as what I saw of the match on then internet, Murphy stalled pretty much most of the night.

  9. we all have our opinions. and he wasnt running. its called smart wrestling. its what you do when you wrestle someone who is more experienced and better than you. you wrestle smart, keep it close, and dont make mistakes. i know many people who predicited this match to be a short one and they turned out to be wrong. thats all im saying

I can't believe what I am reading here. The Ryan faithful are now saying that stalling is smart wrestling. I guess when we hear the old purple people eaters scream he is stalling, you are actually complimenting the wrestler you are screaming at.

Get ready for the the real red team.

  10. I am happy that we (Baylor) is the number 1 ranked team in the state poll. This means all our wrestlers get trophy's at the end of the year. I guess the Varsity division is upset because they wont get the crystal ball at the end of the year. Is this the problem?

  11. You cannot be serious! Give me some of that Blaze Kool-Aid you have been drinking.

According to the latest poll, 3 of the top 5 teams in the state are DII. But who care about a poll; after all, it is just someone??™s opinion.

Let us look at the cold hard facts. On the two occasions where DI and DII teams actually compete against each other, the DII teams have absolutely dominated the field.

At the McCallie Invitational (undoubtedly the toughest tournament in the state and perhaps the southeast with a field that includes some of the best teams from TN, GA, AL, and SC), 5 DII schools finished in the top 10 and 4 DII schools finished 1, 2, 3, and 4! In fact, you cannot find a DI school until you get to 12th place -- Soddy Daisy, which is ranked 8th in the state according to the latest coaches poll.

    1. Baylor

    2. Father Ryan

    3. Brentwood Academy

    4. McCallie

    5. GA

    6. GA

    7. GA

    8. GA

    9. Montgomery Bell Academy

    10. GA

At the Father Ryan Invitational, 5 DII schools finished ahead of all DI schools in the entire field by claiming the top 5 spots:

    1. Father Ryan

    2. McCallie

    3. Christian Brothers

    4. Brentwood Academy

    5. Montgomery Bell Academy

    6. Mt. Juliet

    7. Greenback

    8. Brentwood High

    9. AL

    10. Glencliff

So please, do not use Blackman's win over Father Ryan to declare that DII is weaker than DI. Doing so belittles the accomplishments of both the Sharpshooters and Blackman wrestling programs. Celebrate a hard-won victory and be proud of your boys. But do not claim superiority until you demonstrate it on a regular basis. You can start by having the Blackman coach contact Gordan Connell at McCallie and Pat Simpson at Father Ryan and request to be included in their respective tournaments next season. Trust me, competing against high caliber programs on a regular basis will not only enhance your wrestling program, but it will lend credence to your future posts.

    Gig,

I can't believe I am agreeing with a McCallie poster. You said it well. I was trying to be nice to these guys and all they did was lash out at me, which shows me this is there first rodeo. I am glad for their win over Ryan. It was a good night. I, like you, want to tell the Blackman followers, good win. Just don't put down DII. If you want real respect feel free to join us at McCallie or go to the Ryan tournament. Heck, if they are that good and young as they say, you might want to join us at Collins Hills in Georgia. Now there is real competition.

    Anyway, good post Gig.

  12. Congratulations to Blackman on the biggest win they have ever had. However, I would be careful to not beat my chest too much in victory. You guys have a good team, enjoy your win. It was a good one. Now that you have told everyone how bad Division II is and how your unranked kids beat all these ranked DII kids, you probably feel you could win DII now. Maybe you could. If I were the the Blackman coach, I might ask my administration to leave DI and move over to DII. It would be a lot easier to win than the DI, right! My guess, is that if you guys wrestled 10 times you would win only once, and you did.

So congratulations again on the win.

What happened to Ryan last night. Did they look tired? Or did they just get outwrestled. Just curious. Ryan looked very good at McCallie this year back in December. I wonder if they have any injuries. I know the Baylor boys are interested in knowing.

I wonder if you would mind commenting, other than "that is the way we want to do it", about why you would not divide the two divisions and create two polls.

since there is no agenda,,,,how about putting an agenda together that reflects the divisions?

    thanks.

texas it is obvious to me that the current poll reflects what the pollsters believe to be the best and top ten teams in the state. However, your statement reflects an agenda on your part by wondering why don't we have polls that reflect divisions. Why do you want divisions? Just wondering.

  14. QUOTE(BayouBear @ Jan 21 2007 - 01:23 PM) 826339919[/snapback]

Coach Lewis - Thank you very much for your honesty though I disagree. Because of injury, I believe a rematch between Soddy and Baylor would result in a Soddy victory of more than one point if the match was wrestled today. Even without the injury situation, you assume that only Baylor is improving as the season goes along? What about Soddy? Aren't they still practicing and improving as well?

Now I know 4 voters and I have a good idea of one more. Of these 5...3 are from DII schools. Even if you assume the other 5 are all (which I doubt) from DI schools it means at least 30% of the voters represent DII schools. Of the 158 schools in Tennessee that have wrestling, only 16 of those schools are in DII which is very close to 10%.

I have several issues with the TN Coaches Poll.

    1) The poll is represented as THE Tennessee Coaches Poll while the voters do not represent the current demographics of the wrestling landscape in Tennessee. The poll does not define who votes on this poll. The coaches themselves do not know...I've asked.

Bear if the coaches were to vote Bradley #1 would you still be on here complaining? What is your beef? It is a poll and only opinions of some people. Maybe you need to petition to be on of the polsters. They might take you.

    2) The poll should be renamed The Mythical Tennessee Wrestling Poll because that's what it is. It's a dream of what the rank of teams would be if there was no split. It's the last remnant of a dead issue because, in truth, there IS a split. The DI and DII teams should not be combined into a single poll. Each division should have their own poll.

    3) The media has no idea of the above. They believe the poll actually means something. In the newspaper reports following the Soddy - Bradley match, it was reported in various versions that #2 Soddy wrestled #3 or #4 Bradley. In reality, the match was between #1 Soddy and #2 Bradley.

The poll is a dinosaur of the past. It serves only to remind the Division I coaches why they are in favor of the split. No other poll in this state combines the divisions; not football, not basketball. It's a slap in the face to Division I schools which would be in ranked in a Division I only poll. I actually think the poll organizers desire the combined poll because the resulting Division II poll would have teams being ranked that would not be in the top 50 or 75 or 100 of a combined poll.

It's time there were at least 2 polls and probably 3. A single poll does nothing to recognize the Division I schools who should be ranked between 6 and 10 and does nothing to recognize the A-AA schools. Is that fair to those schools? Those kids, coaches and boosters work just as hard for recognition as the DII schools. The single poll only serves to promote the programs of the successful DII schools.

    Takedown,

I completely understand your question. Based on what I know, neither BA nor Carlos are breaking any TSSAA rule by wrestling a varsity match. Since his middle school season is already complete, he will not be competing on that level again this year. If his season were not over, he could wrestle varsity, but he would have been prohibited from wrestling another middle school match. Also, by he will not be able to compete any any other outside tournaments if he continues to wrestle for the high school, until the BA season is over, then he will be eligible to wrestle in any national tournament at his age level. Again, this is completely my interpretation.

Thank you for answering my question. This kinda clears things up for me. Maybe

  16. First off, I am not trying to get anyone in trouble here. I am trying to clarify information given to me by my sons coach. I am not trying to stir anything here. So forget it. Soms you and H-Dad take your fight somewhere else. I am just trying to get educated here.

This team is hand picked. Team Praetorian is the beginning of Team Tennessee minus baylor/mccallie boys. It is made up of some of the best in the state including

    Calloway BA

    Cox Page

    Stokes Page

    Hoop BMS

    Hooker Prae

    Pinkstaff Prae

    Luster Ga

Calyce Ortale 75 MBA was suppost to go but got hurt.

The finals match did come down to the last match and had Praetorian not given up 2 forfeits or had Ortale not gotten hurt they would of won.

I see where Callaway wrestled in this Middle School tournament, then I read where he wrestled in a match against Ryan the other night. If I am not mistaken, I believe this violates the TSSAA rules. My understanding is that once you are submitted on the TSSAA roster you can't compete with others who are not listed on their schools eligibility form. Has this rule been changed. I recall my sons coach telling me that my son couldn't go to a tournament in Virginia Beach because he had already turned in the eligibility report. I am confused. Has the rule changed? Can someone clarify this for me. I need some help understaning this.
