  1. I am missing recognition for finalists in Volleyball for Chattanooga, Middle Tennesss and likely upper East Tennessee. if I have missed them, i am sorry and need some one to fill this site in as to the results. I only know of one that has not been posted. thanks

Question! Where is Soddy Daisy in the mix of Chattanooga volleyball. After winning 50 matches this season, beating all the AAA teams in Chattanooga, winning

19 straight matches late in the season, and making an appearance in the AAA STATE TOURNAMENT, Soddy Daisy was left with only one player on the first team

and one on the second team of the "Best of Preps." No single A or AA team beat Soddy Daisy this season and after an early season loss to Baylor, Soddy

shut out Baylor the next 2 times they played. Compare facts; go to the team's schedules and compare their records and scores against teams teams like

Baylor, Signal Mountain, Red Bank, Boyd, Walker Valley, Ooltewah, Cleveland, East Ridge, Farragut, Houston, and Chattanooga Christian.

I agree, Signal is the top single A team around, Red Bank is the top AA team in Chattanooga, and Baylor is the top private school in Chattanooga.

After comparing records it is evident who the best AAA team in Chattanooga and who has the best record against the teams listed above.

Yea, I'm from Soddy Daisy, but the facts speak for themselves. The only losses Soddy Daisy had this past season was to State ranked teams in either

    Tennessee, Georgia, or Alabama.

  2. NAIA volleyball teams cannot compete nationally (typically) if they dont have some foreign players. THe reason is because the eligibility rules for the NAIA are less strict the NCAA. Most of these girls could play at any program in the country, they just can't get through NCAA clearinghouse. THus, the best NAIA teams in the country are chalked full of these kids....as well as american kids that can no longer compete at the NCAA level because of grades or the transfer rule. THe top of the naia can compete with anyone because of this (this goes for baseball as well)

many of the brazil, Argentina, bulgaria etc kids are in their mid to late 20's when they come over here and play.

So if you want to win a championship in the NAIA, you better recruit them, cause if you dont, Cal Baptist, Lee, Columbia, Point Loma and Fresno Pacific will...as they should.

  3. Soddy Daisy is 49-11. Their featured players are Hayli Raines (District 5-AAA MVP & Region 3 All-Tourn), Kelsey Nunley (District 5-AAA &

    Region 3 All-Tourn), Rachael Shaughnessy (District 5-AAA & Region 3 All-Tourn), Megan Ware (District 5-AAA All-Tourn), Jessica Smith

(District 5-AAA All-Tourn), and Sara Davis (District 5-AAA Tourn), Olivia Holden, and Rebecca Johnson.

Soddy Daisy has only 2 seniors and have won their last 19 matches in a row.

  4. Soddy Daisy won their 19th straight match, downing Riverdale 3-2. The Lady Trojans have not lost in over a month. Ironically, Soddy's

last 2 losses were to Riverdale, losing 2-0 twice in the same tournament. Soddy now has all their players back from injuries and has

won 30 of their last 32 matches, shuting out their opponents in 21 of those matches.

Soddy Daisy has won 49 matches and lost 11.

Congratulations to Riverdale last night for giving a great effort and showing a "lot of class."

The above information was taken from tssaa.org and other online newspaper sites. If you know anything that is missing or incorrect, please post. Also, please post results here as they become available. Good luck to all teams!

  6. good post

After a sluggish start, the Lady Trojans from Soddy Daisy picked up the pace and beat Cleveland 3-1. Cleveland started hot, winning the

first game 25-19 and jumping ahead in the second game, but Soddy Daisy had too much power at the net and dug up nearly everything

Cleveland hit at them. Soddy won the next 3 games. Soddy won the third game 25-8 with a big show of hitting and won game 4 with

    good all round play.

Soddy will be playing Warren County Monday in the Region 3-AAA tournament. Cleveland will play Cookeville in the other semi-final

    region match.

  7. Seeing these brackets remind me of the great Tournaments past with the exception of one school in Chattanooga. Everyone I am sure looks forward to seeing the results.

Here are the results of the District 5-AAA tournament at Soddy Daisy: Cleveland topped Ooltewah 3 games to 1 and Soddy Daisy beat Walker Valley

for the 6th straight time. Soddy is now 45-11. After a slow start due to a lot of injuries, the Lady Trojans have now won their last 14 matches.

Cleveland and Soddy should be a good match for the district championship tomorrow night.

  8. Congrats go to the Champion Woodward Academy. They got the third game, 16-14, in one of the many exciting,down-to-the wire matches of the weekend, beating Blessed Trinity High. Blessed Trinity had knocked Dobyns-Bennett and Brentwood both out in earlier rounds.

Wesleyan won the Silver,Ensworth the Bronze, and Harpeth High took the Copper. A-Game was a great host, and we had a huge crowd. 12 courts,38 varsity and 10 jv teams..Big thanks to all who came and supported their players and teams.

Lots of good volleyball. Wesleyan, Georgia won the Silver over Soddy Daisy. Soddy won 8 matches and lost only 2 in finishing 2nd in the Silver.

Soddy's only losses were to Gold Champion Woodward Academy in 3 games and to Silver Champion Wesleyan in 3 games. Soddy beat Lipscomb,

Sparkman, Ooltewah, Collierville, Houston, and Oak Mountain in pool play. Soddy beat Houston again in the quarter-finals, and beat Oak Mountain

for a second time in the semi-finals.

As usual, the Brentwood Invitational was a "class act."

  9. I'm not talking about seeding teams. I'm talking about once the teams are seeded. DB the #1 seed played Greenbrier the #4 seed in the first round instead of the #8 seed from the other site. I totally agree that it is hard to seed teams coming into the tournament, but come on, how hard is it to figure out 1 plays 8, 2 plays 7, and so on. Half the bracket was totally drawn up wrong!

I agree that the number 1's should be playing the number 8's, but as it turned out, I think Dobyns-Bennett, Cleveland, Red Bank, and Bradley were in

the same side of the bracket opposite Sullivan South, Father Ryan, Walker Valley, and Soddy Daisy.

I know Walker Valley must be tired of playing Soddy Daisy. Walker lost to Soddy last week in district play, lost again Saturday morning, and had to play them

again in the quarter-finals Saturday night.

Sullivan South beat Cleveland 2 straight in their semi-final game. Soddy Daisy had beaten Father Ryan earlier in the day. After beating Walker Valley in the

quarter-finals, Soddy beat Sullivan South in the semi-finals.

No matter how you cut it, the 32 participating teams from all around the state, showed why TENNESSEE volleyball is gaining respect.

It would be nice to get the scores published.

  10. Well another Choo Choo has come and gone, and Dobyns-Bennett has walked away with their 4th straight championship. DB beat a good Soddy Daisy team in the finals while South and Cleveland made the semis. Cleveland, although lacking height, was one of the scrappiest teams I saw there. They won't overpower many teams, but will bring the defense. I was also impressed by Baylor. They played well, but were knocked out by south in 3. Red Bank, with former coach Thurman filling in, looked good at times as well.

Friday night pool winners were: Greenbrier, South, Cleveland, Farragut, Red Bank, DB, Boyd Buchanan, and Baylor. South and DB won the Sat morning pools. The only complaint I have about this tournament is the championship tournament set-up. For at least the 3rd straight year, the tournament was set-up with the #1 teams from each site on the same side of the bracket. I have been told this was brought to their attention in the past, and the response was that it was too late to change it. Well, they switched DB to the other side this year at the last minute, but not the way they should have. The seeds were all out of whack. Really, how hard is it to draw a 16 team bracket? It's not rocket science!

I know it's not rocket science, but setting up a tournament like this is tough. It's early in the season and to seed the 32 team event would be something

that would lead to a lot of whinning. I thought that with D.B. and South in opposite brackets helped to make the tournament better.

The play of the top AAA teams looked very good. D.B. and Soddy Daisy showed a lot of power. The Chattanooga area was well represented by Boyd Buchanan,

Red Bank, Baylor, Cleveland, Walker Valley, and Soddy Daisy.

  11. Soddy Daisy had 7 players either injured or playing in softball tournaments. Soddy only lost 2 games Saturday. They split with Sullivan South and

beat Cookeville 2 games to 1. Soddy topped Ooltewah 3-0, GPS 2-0, Anderson County 3-0, and beat Catholic 3-0.

Anderson County looked much improved over last year and gave Soddy 3 good games. Ooltewah played without their big middle. GPS is very

atletic and will continue to improve under Coach Brock.

  12. I shuffled back and forth between the 2 gyms. (East Ridge had the better teams; facility and FOOD)

If Soddy Daisy had 4 starters out they should be state champions! I heard from a guy named junior? talking loud, who seemed to know alot about the team, that they had a big hitter not there. Junior seemed like a good guy, and seemed to know alot about volleyball, so I took him at his word.

I thought ooltewah would be really good this year but Anderson County out played them both offensively and defensively. I liked AC, and thought they were the best all around team I saw, but they missed too many serves.

At RB I really wanted to see Karns (only because the people from Knoxville who post on here make them sound like they are the team to beat) and I thought they were ok? I did not see an impressive OH. Did she play in the Baylor game (the one I saw)? The middles were good, but the Baylor middle was better than either of the Karns middles. Karns seemed really slow. It was obvious that the middles were 100% of the offense. In the second game, which Baylor won, they took the middles out of the game and it was over? Did Karns have all of there players? Did not think Karns was as good as ooltewah, AC or Sullivan South.

All in all, the games at ER were at a higher level.

I think GPS will beat Baylor this year, and I think ER will beat Red Bank. Ooltewah will be the best area AAA. Any of those 5 could make the state tournament. I talked to some Sullivan South fans (maybe the nicest fans I have ever met at a playday) and they think DB is not nearly as tough as last year. They think it will be them and DB, but that they have a shot. They were all over watching Anderson County, and think they are the best team in the Knoxville region.

Biggest disappointment was Catholic. If they are the best team in their district it must really be week. Not impressed at all.

As always Coach Neely ran the best playday around!!!

  13. This Saturday East Ridge and Red Bank will host the Choo Choo playday, and there will be a number of really good teams participating. While I don't have access to the schedule for both facilities, maybe DS4Life can post all of the teams that will be there. I do know that Signal Mountain will play Bradley County, Karns (AAA State Tournament participant), Chattanooga Christian (AA 3rd place), Baylor (Div II-AA 3rd place)and Boyd Buchanan (A State Champion). In addition to those teams, Red Bank (AA State Champion), East Ridge and GPS will definitely be participating, and I imagine Ooltewah, Soddy Daisy and Cleveland will be there as well. In years past some of the better teams from Knoxville usually play, so it is likely Farragut, Anderson County and Oak Ridge will be there.

It should be a great day of volleyball (except for the hot box gyms at East Ridge and Red Bank) and will be a lot of fun to see how the different teams look.

On a side note, a buddy of mine asked why its called a "play day" - he said it sounds like a bunch of kids at recess. He thinks the football term "jamboree" should be used, because he knows the girls are working really hard and not just playing around.

The East Ridge "hot box" (middle school gym) is now air conditioned and feels great.

Some of the schedule for Saturday has changed. Soddy Daisy will be playing all their games at East Ridge. Soddy will have the following schedule:

    10:00 - Anderson County, 12:00 - Knox Catholic, 1:00 - Cookeville, 3:00 - Ooltewah, 4:00 - Sullivan South

Soddy Daisy will be playing without, at least 4 starters.

  14. It's way to early! There are several teams around the state that could win a state

championship. Karns can take a "number" as one of the many. The defending state

champs return most of their team. D.B. topped Ravenwood 3-0. Ravenwood topped

Karns 2-0 and 3-0. Looking at "strength of schedule" and the outcome of games

played should factor in when ranking the best teams. Karns lost to Houston 1-3.

Houston had a recorded record of 13 wins and 12 defeats.

Who knows. Karns could be super, but there are a lot of teams with just as much

punch and playing a much tougher schedule.

  15. This wasn't easy, so early. Just an opinion based on how the teams have done so far. Schedule strength is a big part of it.

1-Cleveland (ahead of WV due to schedule strength)

2-Walker Valley (beat rival Bradley by 44, won their tournament against three AA teams)

3-McMinn Central (ahead of Polk until, if and when, Polk beats them)

4-Polk County (lost by just 2 to 4A Northwest Georgia HS, a group with 6’3” and 6’5” posts)

5-Chattanooga Christian (good win over Gordon Lee, GA, trailed WV by 1 at the half)

    6-Grundy County (undefeated)

7-GPS (I only have one result for them, by around 35 over Tyner)

8-Arts and Sciences (two losses, to Clay and by 4 to Pickett)

9-Bradley Central (several losses against good teams, but got past Red Bank)

10-Red Bank (lost to Baylor, but nearly defeated Walker Valley)

Way to early to be picking the top 10.

  16. What some folks think might have been an upset, Soddy came

into Cleveland feeling pretty good about themselves. After

all, Soddy Daisy topped Cleveland 3 straight matches last

year, winning them all 3-0. Cleveland is a much improved

team said Coach Lorri Johnson. Last year we handled them

but I knew coming in they would be tough to beat in their

    own gym.

Soddy Daisy jumped out to a 8-1 lead in the first game and

finished 25-20. The second game saw Cleveland jump out to

a 8-1 lead. Cleveland won that game 25-17. The Lady Trojans

won both the third and fourth games. Game 3 was 25-15 and

    game 4 was 25-19.

Our play around the net was solid tonight, said Coach Lorri

Johnson. Rachel Shaughnessy, Jessica Smith, Kelly Ware, and

Andrea Johnson combined for 8 stuff blocks and 18 touch blocks.

Our serving continues to be a strong point for us as we

were 84 of 91. Shelby Garren was 21 of 22 with 4 aces.

Shelby also recorded 14 assists. Kelly Ware was 13 of 13

serving with 4 aces. Sarah Davis and Rachel Shaughnessy

combined for a total of 33 out of 35 serves in play.

Andrea Johnson totaled 11 kills, 9 assists, and 5 aces.

Soddy is now 4-1 in District 5-AAA and is now 16-4 over all.
