  1. She, coach at Karns, was a co-coach of the year shared with the Hardin Valley Academy coach who improved their team greatly with his first season as coach. Farragut doesn't play them but am aware he was left out of the article as well. He may be a coach/team to watch as many of their teams are doing so well.

    Jumper,

You are confusing honors. Coach Williams and the Hardin Valley coach shared Coach of the Year honors for District 3-AAA. This honor is for Coach of the Year of all volleyball coaches In the Knoxville-East Tennessee area and for all divisions. The Knoxville News Sentinel picks the most outstanding coach for each sport, but I believe it is a vote of area coaches?

  2. DB versus Munford

    Ravenwood versus Karns

    (Top half of bracket)

    Siegel Versus Collierville

    Soddy-daisey versus Indy

    (bottome half of bracket)

Tough top bracket with Karns, DB, and Ravenwood. Looks like Siegel got a sweet deal with the weaker side of the bracket and hosting on Thursday? Why would TSSAA give a competiting team that kind of advantage??? Very strange.

  3. Is Karns getting a new Libero?

At a recent club scrimmage the buzz was that another transfer was coming in to take over the Libero duties. If so, this will be huge for Karns. They have Knoxville's best player with the big middle that transfered from Farragut, and another really good middle. Their setter is ok, but they suffer with serve receive, passing and defense. A great Libero would make them a tough out.

I do not know if this true or not. Is it happening?

ORCAT -- your predictions and musings are getting more and more bizarre. I have also heard the rumor that Karns is picking up a Libero, but that this player will have to play JV for a year due to TSSAA transfer regulations.

But to say that their "setter is ok, but they suffer with serve receive, passing and defense," just made me laugh out loud. I watched this team play several times last year (including their defeats of OR and Farragut), and their passes were dead on to the target. Their passing was better than anybody I saw, and one of their DS's will be playing for Bryan College next year.

How do you think that those amazing middles look so good without great passing and setting? I've seen and played against amazing hitters, but with the wrong lineup beside them they never get to hit. The setter (L. Bonee) has been all District and All Region and has been collecting accolades since she was a freshman. At 5'10" and with great hands, she'll have the chance to play college ball. The current Libero (C. Smith) is unbelievably fast, has an amazing vertical jump, and is currently weighing her college playing choices. I've seen DS/Outside Hitter (M. Bonee) capture multiple "pancakes" in the same game or match and seconds later hit past a block for a kill. She is also weighing her college options as a DS.

Maybe you should call Coach Williams and ask her how many college coaches are calling and emailing her to get their hands on these five juniors. At last count, I was hearing coaches from Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina -- just to name a few.

By the Way -- K. Handel transferred/got rezoned out of Farragut, but never played a varsity point for them. Maybe it's time for you to give Coach Williams credit for developing this player (with help from SMJVC and Phoenix Rising coaches) and quit referring to her as that "Farragut Transfer!" She'll be a SENIOR in August -- do you think that maybe you could admit that she's a BEAVER -- and NOT an ADMIRAL.

  4. My guess is this, based on watching clubs over the years...

An 8th grader has not tried out for a HS team. Regardless of how good she is, there are no guarantees that she'll make said team, therefore the 14s coach is not her HS coach...yet.

We encountered this situation when my daughter played 14s and it was a non-issue because by the time tryouts took place and she was placed on the team club season was over and really, a student is not a "student" until the school year actually starts.

According to TSSAA rules -- a HS coach CANNOT coach any player in club that is ENROLLED in their school. So, during Club season -- HS coaches will typically coach the younger kids (13's 14's, etc.) or the 18's -- who will not be returning to compete in TSSAA sanctioned programs (i.e. their eligibility is done).

  5. It is a huge loss for DB. It does not help. A late season loss to a district rival that was not that close can crush a team. The team that loses always says, no big deal, but what it does is affect the confidence of DB (couldn't win a big game against biggest rival) and helps the confidence of everybody that plays them by showing that they can lose a big game.

Morristown West is very good, and could beat either in an elimination game. Also, the loser that has to travel for sub-state has a tough game.

Oak Ridge got treated unfairly in seeding. Lost 1 match in the district going 15-1. Karns lost 1 match going 15-1. Head to head OR and Karns split, but in games OR won 1 more game than Karns. In every scenerio OR wins the tie break. But no, once again Karns changes the rules and wins the district. This is huge because OR now has to play a quickly improving Anderson County team in the semi's. OR worked hard to win the regular season so they could stay opposite AC who even though they are young, are incredibly dangerous in the tournaments. This is unfair. The only way Karns had a chance was to have OR have to play AC. OR can beat Karns, beat them 3-0 2 weeks ago. AC is a horrible match-up for OR. They are so athletic that if they get hot they can play with anybody. They are really young this year, but are getting better every game, and really turn it on in the tournaments.

If OR gets knocked out in the districts it was because of Karns not stepping up to play AC. Karns has a really good team this year, but so does OR. What kind of a message does it send to your team when you play with the rules so you get an easy road. OR worked hard to win the district to make AC play Karns early. Now OR has the toughest draw possible.

Find it hard to believe that the Anderson County coaches, or the coaches from Halls, Powell, Central, Clinton, Hardin Valley, or Campbell County would just let Karns run the district and have their way. I just can't see Anderson County especially laying down and letting that happen.

Every tourney or season I've ever been associated with had the tie breakers spelled out. If not, then these coaches and athletic directors dropped the ball. Sounds like you are putting the blame in the wrong place!

What about Central?? From what I've seen, they are the only team that took a game from both you and Karns.
