The public schools in Memphis play by the same rules as do schools in Knoxville, Nashville, Maryville, or what have you. If you change schools you sit out a year unless you have a legitimate change of address. Just ask Jarnell Stokes. Why do you think he ended up at UT at the start of the spring semester when he played at UT? He changed schools his senior year and was ineligible to play in high school per the TSSAA guidelines. So he just graduated early and enrolled at UT and was their starting power forward THAT season ... fresh out of high school.
twhite, you must not be aware of the situation with Jarnell Stokes... Tried to transfer his senior year without change of residence... TSSAA ruled him ineligible so he left to go to Tennessee early out of high school. I'm sure TSSAA misses some in Memphis just like they miss some in the rest of the state.
Dont forget Skal's transfer to Lausanne from ECS. He was hurt his Junior year and did not play a single minute. However, he did practice 1 day in the spring of his junior year and TSSAA would not allow him to play as a senior at Lausanne.

I didn't make myself clear...was saying that enough Jackson residents are willing to pay for their kids education that a large private (or two) could thrive there instead of having five small ones, and the "fear Ensworth" portion of the discussion is the private school supporters voicing their fears that their respective enrollments are close to that of Ensworth's, which would place them in the same class should Ens. not choose (or be allowed) to play up. What they don't realize is that it would make logistics much easier in the west if all privates were in the same division.
if Jackson would / could support a large private school, then why are they not already be doing so? USJ, JCS, TCA, Sacred Heart are all great schools. Why are they still "small" based on enrollment?
I do not see Ensworth ever "dropping" down to play in A until they stop dominating AA football. They have played in the last 5 State Championship games, winning 4 of the 5.
-
2,000 probably, but 15-20 over the classification cutoff they don't. West Tennessee (outside Memphis) seems to be different from the rest of the state in the fact that there are zero privates in any classification other than 1A...there are several small privates who might or might not be able to attain a larger student population in smaller towns (Fayette Academy for example), but those in Jackson absolutely could. I could give examples of student athletes being bused 50 miles to attend three of the Jackson schools to play sports, and in one instance in the same year that I know of personally, two excellent students from Jackson were denied admission who needed no financial aid. Big decision...100 mile roundtrip for a baseball player (won state with him), or admit a straight A student from the neighborhood.
I was confusing Webb with Ensworth in my earlier post...they choose to play up with roughly the same student population as USJ in Jackson, and most of the DI private supporters from this area fear that with a complete split that they would have to compete against them for a state title...shouldn't matter if it were more attractive for the kids to play against better competition.
good points I agree.
Why would the complete split mean USJ will have to play up to DII-AA? TCA and JCS would be added to the current DII-A West.
If USJ played up, they would make the throw off the apple cart by being the 5th team in the MUS / CBHS / Briarcrest, St Benedict for Boys and St Agnes, Hutchison, Briarcrest, SBA for girls. where now all 4 respective teams go straight to State playoffs each year.
-
You're forgetting that privates are able to manipulate their enrollment to compete at whatever level that they wish, and that they have the option of deciding to play DI or DII. Webb plays up because they can generally compete with larger schools, but the small D1 private schools still use them in their argument against a private/public split..."no way that we could compete with Webb if..." , so most of them opt to play in the public division, and restrict enrollment to play with the small publics. If your theory were correct there wouldn't be a TCA, JCS, Sacred Heart, or St. Mary's in Jackson (all of which will say that they just can't attract more kids)...There would only be USJ, and they would play DII AA (large division) with Webb, or that the kids would opt to play at one of the larger public schools there. Funny how each small private can't
recruit(oops) attract more kids than would be allowed to play in the 1A public (AA football with 1.8 multiplier) division, yet every 7 or 8 years another small private manages to enroll around 300 kids, just enough to remain in the smallest public division possible. The object is a state championship...the path of least resistance is 1A public division, and in West Tn. that's where the privates are fighting to stay placed.Webb actually plays in DII-A not the larger AA and St Mary's is in Memphis. If USJ went to AA, they would play the Memphis schools of St Benedict, Briarcrest, MUS, CBHS, St. Agnes and Hutchison and then eventually Brentwood Academy and Ensworth.
Trader, I think this is the first time I have disagreed with you. If the president/head master/principle of a private school could have 2000 students, they would enroll them and play in the highest classification allowed by the school's financial aide guidelines.

John is a nice guy, was a great basketball coach, and always seems to have a coached up great post player every year. However, this loss is a head scratcher for many reasons. I am sure he will remember it and learn from it.
think he will still be a great basketball coach. i pray this 12 minute stretch of basketball does not redefine him...
and he does know a thing or 2 about playing basketball and scoring... considering his banner hangs from the rafters at Allen Arena and he has scored more points than any player in any level of NCAA basketball...
a week later and it is still unbelievable.... I watched it again the other day and knowing how the game turns out, was still "sick" on how the game was going in the first 20 minutes of the game....

How is no one talking about this? I've never seen anything like what happened in the second half of that game on Saturday. FRA jumped out fast and pushed the lead to 31 points with 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Harding started chipping away, cut it to 14 or 15 by the end of the quarter, then tied it with a minute to go. They even had a chance to win in regulation, but missed the game winning 3; ultimately, they sealed it with FTs in the final minute of OT.
I don't think I've ever seen anything like that, on any level of bball.
only in the NBA.... and occasionally in College...
Harding only lead the game for a combined total of 57 seconds, and NONE in regulation and the most important last 40 seconds of OT.
-
What about the Harding players not giving up and the coaches not throwing in the towel?
i was in the locker room at half time. to a man, the coaches and the players all said they were not giving up, even the DNPCD squad, who wanted to win more than play and were some of the loudest cheering.
-
yes, i was there. I say this with the gut-wrenching, kick in the "stomach" feeling that I had as my daughter lost her last game to Webb in Sub State, I am prayerfully sorry for the FRA players and fans that it happened the way it did.
was keeping the scorebook. It was a VERY VERY long first half.... Big man from FRA is the real deal. Great feet and soft hands. Unstoppable. Had 19 at the half (pretty sure he was 9-9, 1FT) and finished 15-16 fg and 3 FT.
down 21 at half. 44-23. FRA comes out and pushed it to 31 with about 5 minutes left in 3rd... not sure if running clock in State Finals but it was about to be. young man knocks down a 3; on next play we draw a charge; next play another young man knocks down a 3; we get a stop; next play old fashion 3pt play. that started the 20-3 run to end of 3 quarters score was 65-51. with about 4 minutes left in regulation, FRA 75 - Harding 68. and the final 15-2 run tied it at 77. Harding outscored FRA 54 - 33 in 2nd half... 28-21 in 3rd and 26-12 in 4th.
Harding only led in the game for 53 total seconds; NONE in regulation. but lead for the most important last 40 seconds of Overtime.
No one in Allen Arena knew what just happened. Not any of the coaches that I talked to that were there; the TSSAA people; the announcer, official scorekeeper, the security guards; the TV people; the radio people; the Lipscomb basketball players that were in the gym watching; the Lipscomb baseball players who had just wont their game and were coming back into the Arena and heard the noise and stopped and watched the last 3 minutes of regulation and overtime in the baseball uniforms; the 200-250 Harding fans and again most regrettably the FRA fans and players

The Starks family is a husband & wife combo out of Harding Academy. He is the boys coach as well as the AD and she is the girls coach. Not sure if they both have state titles but I know the boys team has won a few and she was a Ms. Basketball and College player. They could fill both the positions if interested.
Coach Mrs. Starks won state at Harding Academy in 2010.

TCAIntense is one of the smartest posters on CoachT. I'm always interested in his posts whether they are about basketball or football.

Just my 2 cents...I don't call it cheating when its open enrollment.
The Shelby County School district has zoned attendance areas for each school. It is also open enrollment, meaning that a student can apply to another school and probably will be accepted if the school is not at 85% (i think that is what it was a few years ago) of full capacity, but official school bus transportation will not be provided.
the reason for open enrollment has to due with size of student population as well as location of school buildings. SCS is #1 in the state as far as number of students and in the top 10 nationally. Some schools would have double digit enrollment if it was not Open due to families leaving school's zoned neighborhoods. There are more students enrolled in a single high school than some small town / county's entire school district.
The same playing restrictions apply to Open schools. Player has to sit out a year from last play / practice date and the previous school's coach / AD has to sign a release form that has to be turned into tssaa. two very, very high profile players from Memphis could not play their senior year because of this.

How did i say they cheated? By recruiting? Surely you don't expect me and everyone else to believe that these athletes just show up on your door step year after year? Is the omission of the truth a lie? As i have said open enrollment give Memphis teams a huge advantage over most public school systems would you not agree? So most coaches use the AAU programs as a way of sending messages to get kids to come to the school. Now granted if a school is successful that will most assuredly bring kids in as well. Memphis East is going to draw them in because of Hardaway, i mean what kid wouldn't want to play for him! Do I think Mitchell puts up billboards like the private schools do? No but i know how the system works and as a coach i'm not going to say no to a 6'7 kid that shows up on my doorstep! Like i said its more of a TSSAA thing to me. They penalize us while allowing schools systems like Memphins/Alcoa/private schools etc.. to have "open enrollment" where no move is necessary. All the kids down there have to say is they moved in with their Aunt or Grandma or whomever and they "ok" it. I'm all for these kids having a great high school experience and hopefully it will lead to them being a productive citizen in our society. You look at Manassas, ever since Buckner left and they had to play in AA they haven't even been heard of have they? Mitchell has AAA talent that is coming to that school from all over the city, how is that possible? With "open enrollment" so call it what you want, a duck is still a duck.....
UC, I love you and i pray for you everyday...

No Knoxville or Memphis papers voted? Flat out lazy...
when 4 of the top 10 are from Memphis/ Shelby County, what would happen if the only paper in Shelby County voted?
1) Memphis East
5) Germantown
7) Cordova
9) Atlington (actually spelled Arlington)
