  1. Since I coached him in middle school, I came to watch Broyles at the MTSU inter-squad dual last night. First off, he is huge! They still haven't decided whether he will be at 57 or 65 this year but he made 62 for a catch weight match with former TN high school stud, Nick Patton. It was a solid match and both guys look good. Final score was 6-3 in Patton's favor, I believe. Broyles snuck a super duck in there late. The stalling rules in college make it really hard to determine what is or isn't stalling. Anyway, just an update on that. How is Begley doing at WVU? I can not wait to see him on the next level. I've been watching him since his middle school days at Ross Robinson. I remember watching Dean wrestle in middle school too! Does anyone know if English went on to wrestle anywhere? I remember watching he and Grif go at it in the MS GIT finals back in the day. This was a great senior class and it really is fun for me to get to see these guys go on to the next level.

  2. A little region 1-District 2 news most people dont know:

Morristown Wests new head coach, Joe Kemerer, is a 2x NCAA D2 National Champion and University Greco World Team member.

Bryson Hux makes a move to Greenville.

Griffyn Broyles is set to wrestle for MTSU and competed for Team Tennessee.

  3. Region 1 Predictions

    106- Trent Nelson TN

    113- Zach Bynum DC

    120- Angel Blanco JC

    126- Bryson Hux JC

    132- Corbin Hurley TN

138- toss up between Pendley and Carpentre

    145- Bryson Hendley TN

    152- Griffyn Broyles MW

    160- Palmer Begley DB

    170- Tyler Dean DB

    182- Virgil English JC

    195- Hunter Bagley The Hill

    220- Austin Hagerman TN

    285- Logan Townsend JC

Good list! I agree with every bit of it! This tournament will be won in the consolation brackets. TN high has the possibility of having 5 champs!

  4. Yeah I was told that yesterday by one of the Bearden guys and obviously it didn't click on my head. 113 is pretty much wide open without him I'd say.

I'm sure Newcoach will have a spoiler from one of the mtown teams in mind.

No sadly Davis at 220 is the only other wrestler from I see making the trip to the cow palace. Maybe next year!
  5. No Johnson from THS in the finals at 152 with Jeffers? Heard English dropped and so did Latham. Ruth should beat Townsend soundly. I'm personally not impressed with Hux or Yother at 126.

Broyles will be in the finals and probably win at 52.. Ruth beating Townsend isn't out of the question but either way the match will be close. I'm really not sure about English and Lathem. Hux and yother are outstanding. You have to be kidding.
  6. I agree with DB maybe have more than two in the finals, but Tenn High will have a lot of points from 132-145. They are really tough wrestlers, which showed against Science Hill. The only thing is losing team points with not having someone at 20&26 at least. If they had someone there I would say just put them in the top 3. Science Hill even though lost to both Tenn High and DB should battle for a top spot. They have won over and over and because they know how to get points every match. Jeff County has a good team and talent. I do not how this plays out because of the talent that is the region now. This region tournament has probably been the deepest since all the schools were together! This is going to hopefully be the best one yet! Anybody can finish anywhere in this region. I wish the four best teams wrestled in the duals. Where is the region tournament anyway this year?

DB will have several make the finals just like THS, JC, and the hill will as well. There are only 2 kids I have picked to win that aren't from any of those 4 schools.--Bynum from Crockett and Broyles from MoWest.
  7. NewCoach - I think you are overlooking DB just a bit. I believe they are the team to beat at this point. I count at least 5 finalists and maybe up to 7 at region. I would not be surprised to see them qualify 10+ for state. They have a group of kids who have tasted a Region Championship and know what it takes to win. They always show up at the big tournaments. Region will be won in the consolation rounds. I agree there is a great deal of parity in the top 4. Second through fourth in the team race will probably be separated by very few points.

i feel like it will come down to who has the best weekend. Dobyns Bennett is a very strong dual team. I feel like your vikings, the hill, and Jeff co all have great tournament teams. I love how tightly contested the region becomes every year! It will be fun to watch it continue to grow.
  8. Since the regional tournament is coming up very shortly I'm going to make my picks for the champions and how I think the top 4 teams will shake out.

    106-Rodney Nelson-Tennessee High

    113-Zach Bynum-David Crockett

    120-Jose Blanco-Jefferson County

    126-Bryson Hux-Jefferson County

    132-Corbin Hurley-Tennessee High

138-Pendley/Carpentre will be great. Tough pick-THS/VOL

    145-Bryson Henley-Tennessee High

    152-Griffen Broyles-Morristown West

    160-Joseph Begley-Dobyns Bennett

    170-Dean/Rolston is a tough pick for me-DB/SH

    182-Nguyen unless English drops.-SH/JC

    195-Hunter Bagley-Science Hill

    220-Michael Foster-Dobyns Bennett

    285-Logan Townsend-Jefferson County

I believe the top 4 in the team race will wind up with 1.Jefferson County 2.Tennessee High 3. Science Hill 4. Dobyns Bennett. It wouldn't surprise me to see any of those 4 teams win in any order. They're all very close in talent this season.

  9. TN High and DB from District 1. Their head to head match on 1/20 decides seed.

Looks like Jefferson Co. (#1) and Morristown East (#2) from District 2. East beat West in December per Track.

That 1/20 TN / DB match will be important as it would be an easier path not wrestling Jeff Co. in the 1st round.

    Dobyns Bennett beat the hill??
  10. So I notice that Latham is now at 195 and English was not wrestling. What's the current story on that situation?

Not sure myself. I would be surprised of Lathem beat English in a wrestle off. Maybe English is injured?
  11. After looking on track it looked like a fantastic weekend for our region! Congrats to Science Hill on their dominant performance and it sounds like they made some great memories while doing so. I put together a list of all of the AAA region 1 placers from this weekend. Great job boys!

  12. I believe that Coach Hollingshead's intention is to drop Latham and English. Latham seemed to be on track to make the decent. Don't know what the plan would be if English didn't make it down to 184. If the drop does happen, Latham could be the #2 at 195. So far in the duals, Latham and Hills have been splitting matches at 220.

i figured that is what they planned. Sometimes they just don't end up happening its tough to ask someone to lose 10 lbs and still wrestle to the same level. On the other hand when I've seen English wrestle at 95 he gasses quickly. Maybe it would work in his favor?
  13. How I currently see the top 2 in each weight based on previous results, facts, and rumors:

106- Nelson (TN) & Williams (SH)

113- Bynum (DC) & McCray (TN)

120- Story (SH) & (JC kid)

126- Hux (JC) & Yother (SH)

132- Hurley (TN) & Lane (SH)

138- Pendley (TN) & Armstrong (VOL)

145- Charpentrer (VOL) & Henley (TN)

152- Jeffers (DB) & Broyles (MW)

160- Begley (DB) & Jesse (SH)

170- Rolston (SH) & Dean (DB)

    182- Nguyen (SH) & ???

195- Bagley (SH) & English (JC)

220- Foster (DB) & Hagerman (TN)

HWT- Ruth (DB) & Townsend (JC)

106: Surprisingly, I think this is the most competitive weight this season. It's my understanding that Burns (JC) will drop to 106. Throw in him and the funky freshman, Dillon Lemons (DB), there should be some good semis and placement matches.

113: If Burns doesn't end up dropping, he's the other finalist here. Bynum won the first matchup 6-2. Otherwise, maybe McCray (TN) slides in there?

120: SH Freshman Luke Story is no joke. The ultimate preview of the young ones to come in the next few years. No one else had really stood out to me. I assume whoever JC puts out there could be in the finals (Blanco, English, Harris). Story beat Harris 13-0 at their dual.

132: Lane beat Collins a couple times last season I believe.

138: Armstrong from Volunteer looks solid, and has already recorded a major (9-1) over Porter. I'm sure this is partly because of his new training partner he got in the room this year....

145: That new training partner goes by the name of Charpentrer (not a misstype). I have been told him and his brother are transfers from Colorado. Not 100% on that, but the kid is definitely a solid wrestler. He should make the finals and it'll be a tough match between him and Henley.

182: English at 182 I will believe when I see it. He was still a full 194.8 (give or take some tenths) at the SH dual. Didn't look to be on his way down anytime soon. If he does though, it'll be a good one. AK will be welcoming the challenge as Hunter was. I really tried to fill every spot with a guess, but I really have no other name that comes to mind. No one else has stood out to me yet.

195: Believe English will stay 195. No one else stands out.

English weighed in at 194?? Wow. To be honest he looked a little small for the weight. I figured he was around 190-88 and planned to make the decent. Regardless he should make the finals wherever he goes. I personally feel like Jeff Co. Has a better shot at the team title with Hills at 220 Lathem at 195 and English at 182. But hey I'm not the coach nor the athelete.
  14. 106-Nelson(TN) vs Williams(SH)

    113-Bynum(DC) vs Burns(JC)

    120-Myers(CC) vs Blanco(JC)

    126-Hux(JC) vs Yother(SH)

    132-Hurley(TN) vs Collins(JC)

    138-Pendley(TN) vs Harerr(DB) or Porter(ME)

    145-Henley(TN) vs Jeffers(DB), Harville(JC) or Austin(SH)

    152-Broyles(MW) vs Jeffers(DB)

    160-Begley(DB) vs Jessee(SH) or Spangler(TN)

    170-Dean(DB) vs Rolston(SH)

    182-Nguyen(SH) vs English(JC)

    195-Bagley(SH) vs Hall(BOONE)

    220-Foster(DB) vs Davis(MW)

    285-Townsend(JC) vs Ruth(DB) or Hess(MW)

My best guess guys! I'd love to hear comments on my list or see other poster's lists! I love this time of year! 106:I believe this will be a great match! Williams has really stepped up this year! Very tough kid. 113: Bynum has his hands full with Burns. Very interesting bout. 120:If Blanco winds up wrestling I feel like he is a lock over Myers. 126:Hux should pick up the title. Yother will pose problems for him him, however. 132:Hurley. Everyone knows he's a lock but Collins is tough and can stay in those tight matches. 138:Pendley should major in the finals no matter if it's against Porter or Harerr. 145:Toughest weight in the region. Henley has the edge after winning the title last year but I think its honestly anyone's bracket to win. 152:Broyles and Jeffers could be a good match. Im not sure if Jeffers can withstand Broyles offense and gas tank. 160:Begley. I'm not sure if anyone can stop him at this point very solid. On the otherhand I think Jessee(who I honestly think is a lock for the finals) should be able to keep it close with the right game plan. He definitely has the coaching staff for that.170:I say Dean wins it at this very moment but do not count Rolston out. If there is a "Best Match" award at regions this will win it. 182:English has wins over Begley and the older Spangler. This kid can wrestle! I have him beating Nguyen on a minor dec. 195:Bagley will win no matter who steps in his way. 220:Foster should pin his way to the title here. 285:Probably Towndsend vs Ruth again but Hess can hang with either of them. Excited to watch this weight. Tell me what you guys think!

  15. Townsend and Whitelaw would be a great match to watch. Hope he gets well soon!

Not many people know who Whitelaw is but if he comes back they will quickly realize he is no joke. Townsend and Whitelaw will be a nice style contrast and I'd love to see it! Oh and I hope he gets better soon too! ha-ha!

  16. looking forward to tonite, I hope Jeff County is at full strength...

Will English see Bagley at 195 tonight? Should be a nice test for both guys if English hasnt dropped yet.

  17. I remember Townsend and Hess wrestling. Townsend dominated with takedowns with Hess's only 2 point coming off of Townsend's poor arm throw attempt. Townsend won 8-2. But I do believe that Hess will do great things at West.

As of right now they aren't even sure if he's going to be the guy in Feb. with the possibility of Whitelaw coming in at 285.

  18. Did not get to attend the Indian Classic this season... WHICH REALLY SUCKS! I always like to go watch some of the top competition there. My work schedule has been more than intense lately. I did look at the brackets and noticed my Mowest team got beat up a little bit. By no means is that what our team will look like in Feb. I didn't even recognize the majority of the names in the brackets. It looked like they had alot of their better guys out. I haven't been able to talk to anyone on the coaching staff about why they had so many out but I noticed Broyles was out for whatever reason. The last time I saw him wrestle was against Begely at West and he wrestled very very well. He was actually controlling the tempo of the match before he took a shot from the outside late in the second period. Whitelaw is hurt again. Didn't even get hydrated. I believe they are going to wait and see how bad it is. He may very well get the hydration test done and come back at 285. As of right now West has solid kids that you probably havent seen much of. Barnes who will be at 160 after Christmas is a big one. Really solid wrestler and the sky is the limit with him. Injuries have held him back this season a little bit as well. Davis at 220 is looking really good this year. From what the brackets read it looked he ran into some studs at the Indian Classic. He will probably make it to state this year and see Foster from DB in the Region finals. Hess(FRESHMAN) at 285 who is out with a knee injury is set to come back in Janurary I believe. I'm not sure how a full match would go but he had a tight one with Townsend at the science hill takedown tournament in the preseason. They have  a lot of quesion marks in their line up right now and we will just have to see in Feb.
