  1. I spoke to a BA parent on Saturday and they had 2 Offensive players who were on vacation and 4 defensive players that were out. Great job Oakland, but BA was down some players. I would love to see you all play them when the entire team is there. Great job on the win anyway. The BA parent said their entire team was shocked!

There were several starters not participating. However, the main thing that we talked about was the Oakland intensity level being much stronger than ours and great Oakland execution and poor BA execution. We went through the motions and Oakland played like a hungry team that wanted to win. If BA wanted a chance to beat Oakland, even with the missing players, they would have to step it up several notches. I think Oakland is heading for a great year.

  3. Quite right...so back to the point. If I had to bet the pension on one horse, it would be BA. They have a number of starters returning from a very good team. The program is always solid, and the addition of Floyd Elliott as DC can only help improve ab already solid group.

I hope MBA matures quickly against Antioch and Moeller, but the sensible bet right now is BA.

I felt pretty confident last year. I still feel that BA had the talent to beat MBA last year. However, the talent was close and the MBA team executed everything so well. Especially their line. The big hope, this year, would be that our talent on the line can overwhelm that great execution and more importantly, we can develop a passing game.

  4. Try this definition from Wikipedia: Student financial aid refers to funding intended to help students pay education expenses including tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, etc. for education at a college, university, or private school. General governmental funding for public education is not called financial aid, which refers to awards to specific individual students. A scholarship is sometimes used as a synonym for a financial aid award.

Need based financial aid isn't generally referred to as a scholarship? So AD's and school administrators from private schools around the state have no influence on whose financial disclosure forms get sent to Princeton NJ (NJ isn't in New England) to determine whether they qualify for financial aid? Oh, please! Surely you're not that naive. My kids all went to private schools and I know that in the admissions process academic as well as athletic potential can be and regularly is considered. For that matter so is artistic tallent. If you're telling me that BA regularly ends up with a disproportionate number of DI one athletes on its football team through blind chance, you're either delusional or taking illegal substances. I have never accused BA of illegal recruiting. The success of its football team attracts athletes. But a large fast child who can pass the entrance requirements and whose parents can't afford the school will have and better chance of being encouraged to send financial forms to Princeton than a small slow poor child. I have no proof other than speculation that there are few or no small slow poor children with financial aid on BA's football team but there are and have been large fast poor children with financial aid on the team.

I scanned your novel in hopes that you were going to introduce some facts. Nothing...hey wait a minute. Here is something. You said that the financial disclosure forms are sent to Princeton, NJ and took the time to correct me about New England - thanks. I wasn't really sure, which is why I said New England area (should have said, Northeast - my bad). I am not as handy with Wikipedia as you are. Hey, wait a minute. I guess you aren't sure either. The BA website says Pittsburgh, PA. Darned, I thought you introduced an honest to goodness fact.

    Just messing with you.

  5. You're right, BA gives a fraction of the grant in need scholarships that the schools you cited do which is a function of student body size and tuition amount but the salient point for this discussion is to which sport's athletes they are disproportionately given. That's not a criticism of BA's policies but an observation of BA's athletic priorities. If I'm Ralph Potter or formerly Carlton Flatt, the AD and football coach and in a position to influence who receives scholarships, I bet you'll see a bias towards large fast young boys who might help me in the sport that I coach. If my assumptions are wrong, please disabuse me of what is apparent to most who watch BA football year end and year out.

I have just as much knowledge about financial aid recipients at BA as I do MBA. I don't think you know either. I think you are assuming and that is perfectly fine for a message board. Giving your opinion or assumptions is all part of the Coach-T experience. One thing I do know for sure, however. Neither MBA or BA give "scholarships" to anyone. They give need based financial aid. BA uses a firm in the New England area that determines eligibility and it is 100% determined by the families ability to pay. This firm does not know anything other than the finances of the prospective student's family. They do not know race, athletic ability, big, small, fast or slow - just the numbers. This is not my opinion. I know this to be true.

  6. BA has a depth issue!!!! Give me a break. Your tongue must be planted firmly in your cheek. Year and year out they play 5 or 6 future NCAA DI players. They don't have the academic entrance requirements of MBA, McCallie, Baylor, Ensworth, etc and tuition is less than those. I'd like to see the number of starters they have on scholarship versus the rest of DII. "Most years, BA will play 30-35 on a rotating basis while a game is in doubt". Baylor and McCallie would be proud to be able to make that statement with a straight face.

BA has just over 200 boys in the high school and does not give out anywhere close to the financial aid as McCallie, Baylor or MBA (bigger, older schools with huge endowments and large alumni base). They could not afford to do it. The tuition is less, but still 15K. I think the enrollment is what Itzme is speaking of in the depth department. I will agree that BA has helped develop their share of D1 athletes.

  7. He played WR at Ohio State and for the Titans. He previously coached some at CPA, I believe.

Very energetic, but also a seemingly genuinely nice guy who was very active in the community when he played for Tennessee.

One of the finest individuals that I have ever met. MBA hit a homerun with this hire.

  8. I saw in the paper yesterday where the BA lineman, Alex Bullard committed to Notre Dame over Tennessee and Michigan who were next in line on his list of 21 scholarship offers. Does anyone know where McHaney is leaning?

Offer from Oregon came through yesterday. Like Bullard, he is an excellent student. I understand he is leaning Vandy or GA Tech. It is still up in the air, however.

  9. Go ahead and schedule it again for the sixth time.

    MBA vs. BA

Only question is if BA can finally beat MBA.

If MBA provides BA the opportunity, I will be even more impressed the Big Red's coaching staff than I was last year. They lost a bunch of starters.

  10. BA and Ensworth. Then MBA. I think the Chattanooga teams are in for another struggle this year.

Anyone confirm the rumor that Jarod Coleman, BJ's brother, is headed to BA to play for Ralph Potter?

It looked like that was going to happen. But, in the end Jarod's grandfather did not want to move and the family did not want to leave him.

  11. I ran across an old home video and remembered your post when I was watching. I thought that I would share it. The environment is totally different for sure.

DISCLAIMER: This is not intended to be video to glorify BA. Please accept it for historical content. These are clips from the 1980 AA Title game. BA vs Rule High School out of Knoxville. BA featured Kent Austin #12 at QB & Jimmy Hockaday #85 and Rule featured Terry Minor #1 at QB who committed to UT, withdrew the commitment and went to Clemson. That Rule team also featured the Copher brothers. I know at least one of them played for some years in the NFL. We narrowly escape when the back up QB fumbles a snap a the end of the game. Bill Wade is the trophy presenter.

I can't imagine how things would have been if this BA/MBA title game would have been played at MBA...

    Here is the link:

That brings back some memories. Thanks for sharing.

  12. it was #72 that took out Jay cole #74, after the game had already ended

I did not see that part of the film (after the game). However, #74 did not get up and it seemed pretty clear that his injury resulted from that play. He stayed on the ground during the film that I saw and Alex left the area. Moreover, I can't imagine why Alex Bullard could have wanted or needed anymore satisfaction. If you see the film, you will understand.

  13. And after the last play of the game, when the clock had been at zero, and the whistle blown, and the players were rushing the field, one of the BA OLineman stomped on Jay Cole's ankle, on prupose, and he now has a high ankle sprain, thats beyond Ryan-like

I hope someone other than myself has seen the film. If they have, they know that either vols98 is "mistaken" or the film is mistaken. The film shows #72 Alex Bullard knocking #74 from MBA partialy to the ground in a pancake style block. When #74 tried to get up he knocked him viciously and maybe unnecessarily, but cleanly, back to the ground. There was no penalty called and there should not have been. One thing for sure there was no stomping or kicking or anything resembling that. It was a vicious block delivered by a very good and I bet frustrated lineman, who will be one of the top recruits in the state next year. I certainly hope #74 is ok. I know the championship had to take some of the sting out the pain.

  14. The score of this game was not indicative of how MBA domanted this game. I left the game at the start of the 4th, but all the credit (not all but most) needs to go to the MBA O-line and Defense. The O-line punushed BAs defensive line and opened some huge holes for all the running backs.

Congrats to both teams who are the two best teams in DII. And to MBA, what a great season (13-0), congrats to the coaching staff and team. Well done!

I hate to have to agree with that. We played just like we did during the first meeting and you guys cranked it up a notch. It could have easily been worse.

  15. No, he's referring to Ryan's lack of a stadium. I really don't understand why the Irish keep thinking MBA is their cross town rival. The rivalry has to actually be competitive as in a bit more than 11 straight MBA wins...Back to the BA story. Give the Big Red some credit. The running game worked rather effectively to put 13 points on the Board against the huge BA D-line...and with continual improvent on the passing play, look for a TD from Spencer Wise. Yes, Chris Jordan is back...but Mcgugin has some tricks up his sleeve to contain the recruit. 12-0...13-7...final score:

    MBA 24

    BA 17

A huge year for McGugin and the Boys.

Normally people start all of the "recruit" talk after getting beat. I think you must have a bad feeling about the game and you are not being totally honest with us. Just a theory.

  16. As many have said before, this game is almost guaranteed to be close and low scoring, and a defensive war all the way through. Both defenses have played outstandingly this season. It will undoubted be a great game with fierce battles down in the trenches. Also as many have said, MBA does have the advantage in the kicking game, with Fletcher kicking, needless to say that that did decide the game. I would tend to say that MBA and BA are just about equal in the offensive category, while BA may have the edge in the backfield, except the QB, I would give the O-Line Edge to MBA, because, in my opinion, they have the best O-Line in the state. I would also say that the two defenses are comprable, MBA and BA both have outstanding D-Lines, but I would say that MBA has the edge in the linebacker corpse. The secondaries are also similar, but BAs corners are a little bit too aggressive and bit on too many fakes. What I am most concerned about is BAs unexperienced sophmore QB, from watching him, he seems to get frustrated and flustered when he gets pressured, and he can throw it away on an otherwise good play, or he can be forced to throw bad passes, sometimes resulting in ints. He can also tuck it and run, which will rarely result in a good play with MBAs defense.AMEN, we have dealt with it all season, and look how that has turned out, but we will have to really show up ready to play on Saturday

I can go along with many of your points. However, our QB is better than he was when we played last. He missed a couple of wide open receivers with no pressure against MBA and many other teams on a consistent basis up until the last 3 weeks. He has stopped looking "freaked out" and has started looking confident. Now, at MTSU in the State Title game his improvements may be nullified by the tension. Also, I don't blame you for having the opinion that you have about our secondary. You are partially correct. It is tough to judge them on the MBA game. You guys execute the short to medium passes/patterns so well, it can make a secondary look that way.

  17. this really is what it's all about...two class programs. Two class coaches. Two teams who do it the right way. Again this is THE rivalry in Tennessee. Maybe it doesn't have the history, but it has the quality and "star power" that can't be matched anywhere in the state...and now we play again in the post-season for all the marbles.

I agree with flyby...any predictions at this point are just random guesses. This is one of those "too close to call" games....I'd say the difference will be a single turnover, a single big play on special teams, or a single big play from one side.

I'll take this opportunity to praise Coach McGuigin...what a fantastic first season, after all the controversy surrounding his hiring. Whatever happens this week, Coach McGuigin has demonstrated his worth...and that we have a lot to look forward to under his watch at MBA.

Well said. This game is a great, great match up and is in my opinion a straight "pick-em".

I was really hoping for an "orientation period" for Coach McGuigin. No more than 5-7 years, but it was not to be. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
