So one of the most talented individuals in the country shouldn’t be allowed to accept money someone is willing to pay them because a coach wouldn’t be able to manage them? should all these child youtube stars be banned from making their millions because it might be harder for their parents to control them?

No. Adults who offer that kind of money to untested kids are really stupid, though. Let's not forget a certain QB who was the #2 dual threat QB in the country and was pegged to be a better version of Josh Dobbs. Imagine if NIL had been a thing a few years ago and they had given that guy a contract worth $8 million. Just saying

That's been happening long before NIL.  Under the table money was the "old" NIL.

Not to the extent that it's happening now because it's happening in the open now. It's different when a kid is openly getting contracts and it's known and talked about in the media the way it is now. Donors used to help athletes get nicer apartments or buy them and/or their parents cars. There's a big difference between that and getting contracts that are worth more than the coach's salary. You honestly think that won't result in a massive breakdown in discipline and a bad product on the field? Money is power.

I don’t understand how college athletes being paid is going to ruin football? Like you said, they’ve been getting paid for years anyways. Did Erik Dickerson ruin college football when he took all that money to go to SMU? Plus, why shouldn’t kids be able to take money someone is willing to pay them?  Everyone is all about free market and capitalism until it comes to young athletes getting paid.

For one, do you think a 19-year-old player is going to listen to a coach when he is making more than him just to act in some commercial? There are a lot of potential problems with the way things are heading.

  4. My thoughts after listening to Reeves' intro speech and having time to think on it:

#1- I really like his energy and charisma. He had me fired up and anyone who knows me knows that life has been very difficult for me for the past year and they know exactly why.

#2 - I liked his analysis of West Ridge and how they were disciplined and professional in everything they did. I like that Reeves can recognize the importance of discipline and being purposeful in everything from getting off the bus to warming up. It will be interesting to see if he can actually make a positive impact in that area.

#3- I like what he said about weight training. It will be interesting to see what his staff can do in the weight room.

But there was one thing he said that really troubled me. He said that the Xs and Os don't matter in football. That could be a big problem.

  5. I want to address the myth that Meadows just had so much more talent because that is one of the myths that allows the program to continue wallowing in excuses. I remember when Meadows was the coach. The culture was better. The players, coaches, and fans actually expected the Govs to beat Maryville and they almost pulled that off. It was pretty simple. The coaches had a good strength program in place and their teams played with physicality. Those teams also had a good kicking game and they always had good defenses that were aggressive and liked to hit. Those teams were everything that Shad's teams weren't. Shad's teams were soft and undisciplined and they never had a defense anywhere close to being decent. Did Meadows have a more complete team talent wise in 2007 than any team Shadowens ever had? Sure, but the talent disparity wasn't nearly as great as people think it was. In 2019 and 2020, WB was a piece or two away from having pretty talented teams across the board but the best we could muster was 4-6 both years. I'll take a 9-3 ceiling over a 4-6 ceiling every single time. Meadows proved it could be done. He showed that WB can have a solid football program with a good weight program, a physical mindset, a good kicking game/special teams, and a stingy defense. Those are all pretty basic things that a competent coaching staff should be able to get out of a school with 1,900 students year to year even if a few Jimmies and Joes consistently defect to schools with jumbotrons. Meadows did it. There are no excuses. If the next coach is decent, he should be able to do it too. I don't care what the record is next year, but I expect the team to be able to tackle.

  6. After having time to read through this whole thread it blows my mind how black and white people's thinking is. Before the season, a lot of people - myself included - thought WB could have a winning season in 2021. Now a lot of people will just say they thought that because the schedule was easy, but you don't predict a winning season for a team like WB unless you feel like the program is trending upward. And at the time it seemed that way because WB was coming off back to back 4-win seasons. That may not seem like a big deal but it was for WB because the Govs hadn't won more than 3 games in a season in over a decade (although WB technically won 4 games in 2011 but had to vacate the Central win). So a lot of people had high expectations for the Govs, but things fell flat for one reason or another. I'll admit that I haven't really been in the loop with what's going on with WB football for the past year and most of you know why. Frankly, my mind has been other places. Having said that, I had been hearing rumors for well over a year that Shad was looking to retire and they were actively grooming Bosco to take over when Shad retired. Obviously, that plan was (almost certainly) scrapped when Bosco took the Eagleton job. I mean maybe his ties to the program could lure him back, but I doubt it. It just seems like he'd have an easier time winning games at Eagleton than he would at WB. Plus I wasn't super crazy about his offenses at WB anyway. But back to my original point, this thread has been full of negativity, but the recent past of WB's football program hasn't been all negative. Sure, 2021 was a really disappointing year, but it is nonsense to compare WB to Heritage and act like the program is completely dead. I also don't get all the fatalistic comments about a lack of interest from coaches. I remember people saying similar things before Ridge and Shadowens were hired. Tom Kreager even said there was no way Shadowens would touch the WB job. No, there's nothing new. People still say the same things they've always said. I don't know who WB is going to hire and if that person will succeed, but I figure you can only go up after getting destroyed by teams like Karns in 2021.

I bring up all these reasons why there could be 2 possibly 3 youth teams feeding into this program and why not. With 7 elementary schools feeding into WB it's hard to believe no one at all could be interested in stepping forward. Other things that are a positive for WB is the growth on that side of town. I see WB having the potential of being a Bradley Central type school being right at the city limit and the kids being brought right to their doorstep in the near future. Will take someone that can see this and work hard for those goals which can over shadow the weakness of the poor administration of 'Yes Men" that have always hindered this program.

Getting away from that one daddy will extend his life at least 20 years I'm told.

Good points, Barney. I think Bradley Central is a good example of the type of program WB could realistically be if they got their stuff together. If you look at Bradley Central, that program was dead in the water a little over a decade or so ago. WB dropped 60+ on them at their place when Meadows was coaching.

Don't discount the Govs in the playoffs just yet.      In 2006 a very nominal middle of the pack WB team took on a 1st round playoff game against a very good 10-0 team.    Anybody remember what happened?

That narrative is so deceptive.  That was a 6-4 WB team that had two close losses to some of the best teams in 5A at the time (Farragut and Ooltewah) and a loss to Maryville. We could have easily beaten Farragut and Ooltewah. We only lost to Farragut by a point and we lost to Ooltewah 28-24 on the road because a very questionable flag eliminated a late go-ahead WB touchdown. That Ooltewah team lost to the eventual state champs (Smyrna) in the semifinals and Ooltewah had to beat Farragut in the third round to get to that game. That was a very good WB team.  We're talking about a team that could have easily been 9-1 with a 34-10 loss to Maryville. To say we were middle of the pack is inaccurate. We were a top 5ish team in 5A.

OL Shad will only need to use one pass play against DB.  Roll the quarterback out and tell him to pick a wide open receiver and throw it to him.

I see your point, Waco, but I don't think you realize that we like to throw it right to the defense. You can count on at least three turnovers from us this Friday.  My prediction is we will score a few tds and get our yards, but lose 49-21 or something like that. It's the same story every week. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think I am. I saw that we have one of the leading receivers in the whole Knoxville area and we have won 1 game all season. That's one of those things that only makes sense if you don't think about it. QB play matters, folks. And we just don't have good qb play right now.

  10. Our offense is bad. We should be scoring a lot more points than we are scoring against the teams we are playing. There's no excuse for our ineptitude on offense.  It's been said a million times,  but it all starts with the qb. WB hasn't had good qb play all year. I wonder if someone has pictures of Shad posing with a shark on a fishing boat. They must have something or else we wouldn't have to keep seeing the family tradition.

Don't think QB is your problem. Defense is the biggest area of concern. One of the Sevier touchdowns the kid was all by himself because the db was nowhere in sight.

Nonsense.  Giving up 28 points is pretty good in 2021. We had plenty of opportunities to outscore them and didn't. Mostly  because we don't have consistent qb play.  We are probably getting close to 20 interceptions on the year if we aren't already at that mark. It's hard to stop people and win games when your qb is giving the other team about  3 extra possessions per game.

  12. WB has improved quite a bit even though it isn't showing in the win column yet. The defense was terrible at the beginning of the year and is not that bad now.

The only problem is our qb play. Our qb can sling it around and make some nice throws, and he'll throw just as many costly interceptions. The fact is we would be .500 right now with better qb play. We had plenty of opportunities to beat Jefferson County and Sevier County. Our qb play got us beat in those games. Period. I can't blame the Clinton loss on our qb play because nobody in our program could do anything right that night. And then we got dusted by Karns. That's on the whole team and coaching staff because that was just embarrassing.

I watched as I always do every week but WB was looking good and had the momentum and had the holder not bobbled the snap on the 46 yard field goal attempt allowing Sevier County to set up shop at the 40 yard line in the middle of the second quarter WB should of won this game. When that happened Sevier County made them pay for it driving down field like the first team does in practice against the hamburger squad. I've got an old saying, you better always use your qb as the holder in case something bad happens because he has the best experience to jump up and find someone open. Oh well it's a new week and a new team and personally WB can win this game if something stupid don't happen. I'm not impressed with West Ridge as I was in the beginning. Their schedule consist of the regular group of teams in the northeast corner of the state that seem to exist and all play for a chance at the Jaycee Turd Bowl at seasons end.

The only way we can win is if our QB play gets a whole lot better in a hurry.

  14. I have never been more apathetic about WB football than I am right now, except for (maybe) the 2017 season. That was another season where everyone thought the schedule was favorable but optimism quickly disappeared after a really bad loss to Lenoir City to open the season. That season we ended up going 1-9 and I think that's going to be our final record this year unless a whole lot of stuff changes really fast. I'm so disinterested that I only tuned into the stream for a few minutes in the first quarter tonight and saw that the game was another s### show and turned it off, and I didn't even look at the final score until just now.
