  1. If they did go to 8 point forfeit then coaches would just bring two wrestlers for each class or have one who can wrestle in two weight classes. Then get pinned at worse 6 point loss same result as forfeit now.

Good. At least there would be a wrestling match.
  2. I agree. Personally I destest the "forfeit out" approach once someone has won. I suppose it's the same debate as resting your starters at the end of the NFL season. Not good for the fans or the sport. I think it's an advantage for the guys to wrestle, especially if they won't have any action before the next match. A live match is very different than an intense warmup. People always seem to wrestle their best the 2nd, 3rd or 4th match when competing. Sitting them is disadvantageous (IMO). Secondly I thought the point of wrestling was to wrestle? Just a crazy thought.

However, I do think the 8 point forfeit should solve 95% of this issue.

  3. "If you're currently competing, and if you're striving to be the best, prove it on the mat. Shut your mouth, and let your performance do the talking."

Thanks for posting, very good read. Agree 100%. I have much respect for the LT's of our great sport (after a touchdown simply hand the football back to the referee - act like you've been there before).

  4. East Literature became East Nashville...if you notice, in track it lists their Global Team name as "East Literature Magnet School" still. They still wrestle, their HWT Lee is pretty good.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe they were the ones that initiated the split between AA and AAA.

  5. Dont want to step on any toes or cause a big ruccus, but no love for small school. Plenty of small school wrestlers at a very elite level worthy of possibly making this list. No need to be biased to the wrestlers who come strictly from powerhouse schools. Broaden the spectrum, watch more of a variety of wrestler and then make judgement.

Most list on here mentioned Hutchins and Evans. That's 2 out of 15 or so. IMO that's about right. Obviously D2 recruits and usually gets the best of the crop coming out of middle school. AAA has the most bodies. That leaves AA. Not exactly sure who'd you'd consider adding to the top 15. But to say just because they're small school they should be added is nonsensical.

  6. Whitworth over any 106 D1 has,

    Eason over any 126,

King and Dendy would be the finals match at 152,

Then you seem to neglect Reiniche, Nicholson, Duhm, Brackett (a Greco Fargo Champ)

Along with many other talented individuals.

I understand that we all neglect D2 here... but that doesn't make them boring.

I agree D2 has many studs. The problem is the TSSAA and their stupidity. They wrestle each other like 26 times within 2 months. By the time the state tournament comes every match is like 3-2. Even if one kid is far above another talent wise, if you wrestle each other enough it's going to wind up 3-1 or 5-2. It's like wrestling your workout partner. For the fans, it's like watching paint dry.

  7. Your (#13) got drilled by your ( # 15) in the Ryan tournament, Bowers from Cleveland pinned your (#13) and beat your #15. You don't have Bowers anywhere. Also your (# 14) got beat by Shrader (I think Franklin) in the Ryan final. Rippy should be 6th or higher, although doesn't look like he's wrestled alot this year.

Didn't Bowers lose to an 8th grader? And I don't think he even placed at McCallie. I like Rippy, but he hasn't competed Nationally, is a one time State Champ and has only wrestled a handful of matches this year. Though he may have the talent to warrant 6, I think it's a bit early. Just my OP.

  8. Are you serious? You think hwt wasn't deep last year?? You think it's not competitive? You have got to be kidding. Comparing Larry Owings vs Dan Gable was not at all the same thing as World champ and olympic champ vs 2x defending NCAA champ.

Snyder is hands down the most credentialed wrestler at ANY weight in college and p4p the best in college. And Nick is the most decorated wrestler in TN and the best p4p. Brackett gets my #2 vote.

I'm glad he gets your vote. Will give you a coookie. In the meantime check the super 32 and Fargo brackets and check the number of participants per weight class.

Also don't be surprised if Kramers kid doesn't shock the world . Maybe it'll be like the election and I'll be the only one that isnt surprised

  9. You said that Snyder shouldn't be considered bc he only beat Gwiz by 1 point. But he was a 2x champ going into that match. He was an olympic champ so yeah I think his style at whatever weight would still translate into a national championship. Just because he isn't as flashy or doesn't ride legs doesn't mean he isn't better than, say Nashon Garrett.

He can not be flashy, and still be better than everybody else.

Who said anything about flashy? Not sure how riding legs is flashy. Yes I give him kudos he was Olympic champion I said he was awesome . Larry Owings beat Dan Gable does that make him the best pound for pound ? My point being heavy weight is a different breed . To say it's as deep and competitiveness as the middleweights is living in Lala land
  10. How many people last year beat 2x champs in the finals?

What does that have to do with styles? You obviously completely missed the point . Not sure if that was deliberate or just ignorance

On another note (though it's not politically correct to say), generally speaking, most really good bigger athletes focus on football.

  11. I shouldn't reply because I knew my opinion wouldn't be the popular one, but I'm going to anyway.

First, why do people have to start throwing jabs when someone has a different opinion? I lost all credibility because we disagree? It's okay for people to disagree on here, and have differing opinions without getting so upset. It's just a message board, and I'm sure Boykin doesn't really care if I have him in my top 10.

Second, I never said being a heavyweight takes their appomplishments away. I'm a big fan of Boykin and Evans. They'll probably go down as some the best HWT's TN has ever produced. I love watching them wrestle, and hope to see big things from them at the next level. I hope my previous post wasn't took as me trying to put them down, because it wasn't intended that way.

Third, for MY pound for pound list, I threw out their past accomplishments. I was looking at it from a pure stylistic matchup, and I stand behind my opinion. There's a completely different style of wrestling between the big boys vs the smaller wrestlers. In MY opinion, that skill set doesn't translate well against someone like King. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm okay with that, because it's just MY opinion, and I don't expect everyone to think the same way I do.

Fourth, at the end of the day, we are really comparing apples to oranges. It's just for fun, and all speculation. Pound for pound lists are just everyone making guesses. We're never going to know. I doubt we ever see King vs Boykin or Sells vs Evans and so on in the future. There's nothing to get bent out of shape about, because people don't have the same guesses as you about wrestling matchups that are never going to happen. We're just having fun with hypothetical scenarios.

I'd have to agree with the different style point. Snyder is amazing but I certainly don't think he's the best pound for pound in the NCAA. He won in the finals last year by 1 point with 2 seconds left. That's not exactly dominating. Did he have to worry about Gwiazdowski hitting him with a spladle when he shot to his knees? Haven't seen him hit too many inside trips lately. How would he respond if someone threw legs on him? Those are just a couple of examples of what heavyweights don't really have to worry too much about. Personally I'd put Gabe Dean above him and probably 4 or 5 others.
  12. Good point Sommers. It's not like Tennessee wrestling is producing All Americans all over the place that are wrestling out of state. I can think of 2 different 5 time state Champions and one 4 timer that wrestled out of state D1 over the last few years that never even qualified for the D1 National Tournament. However, in the early 90's UTC had several All Americans clustered together. Howard Langford, Bret Gustafson and Guy Harris all placed within 2 years of each other wrestling under Ralph Manning (but much credit should go to Ethan Reeve whom they started their collegiate careers under). After that Cody Cleveland, Ceritas (I think I butchered the spelling) and Keller (I believe they were all under Brands?). That's 6 within 6 or seven years. A long dry spell since.

  13. Concessions? I'd recommend sneaking into the hospitality rooms. Preferably at some of the more country locations (Halls, Summit Hill, etc.). Usually there's much more home cooking as opposed to McCallie, FR or some of the preps where everything's store bought and they're much friendlier so the chances of being thrown out aren't nearly as high.

  14. Hamm you do a great job buddy! Me and da Mrs. moved down here from da far nord some years ago and I must say dat we do enjoy da rankings! You betcha! It takes at least til Christmas to get'em all ironed out. Ya, Ya, Fritzie, It ain't no easy task! Me and da Mrs. will be headed to da Cleveland Duals dis weekend to check out da great wrasslin and sample some of the tasty offerings da concession stand will be sellin. I cut too much weight back in da day and I am trying to make up for it. I'm still a waitin to come accross some good hotdish! Who has the best concessions down here?

  15. Many summer opportunities available. Had wrestlers from all over the state compete at the Cadet National Duals recently for team TN. As we speak, we have a team of young men representing Tennessee at the Junior Duals in Tulsa, OK. There are also wrestlers preparing for Fargo next month. It's a busy time of year for many. I guess slow is a relative term.

Slow for Coach T. Previously people came here to see results of Cadet Nationals, Junior Duals, Fargo, etc. Now no need to. It's all on Track. The gossip and arguing will start back come August.

  16. Amen, it's very frustrating that these money generated Folkstyle events are slowly taking over our FR/GR season....most if the kids listed are in my club but it's hard to convince families to compete at SE Regionals when they can get 8-10 matches at NHSCA duals.

Agreed. And the SE Regional is a great event right next door to our state. 20 mats, awesome facilities and they even filmed every match on every mat this year which can be viewed. We should be supporting USA Wrestling as much as possible. We owe a great deal to them for having saved Olympic Wrestling. On top of that it prepares kids for Fargo and is a perfect end of season event for those not going to Fargo.

The month of June and beyond has more than enough scholastic style events.

  17. IMO, the most important thing is to sell programs (coaches) on Freestyle and Greco. It would help if there wasn't this competition between Folkstyle and FS/GR in the spring. It's hard enough finding interested kids for one style, let alone two. There needs to be a 3 month hiatus (between high school nationals and the June camps) on folkstyle tournaments. Tennessee is about the only state that doesn't follow this etiquette. I really don't understand hosting a "modified takedown tournament" in the spring. The biggest problem is pride. Coaches that don't know freestyle are too prideful to send their kids to FS/GR clubs. Is the Director to blame? Having a weighin 1 day before or the morning of the State Tournament isn't going to increase participation or improve the officiating.

It would help if the Cadet and Jr. teams were promoted more during the highschool season (especially at the state tournament). Most kids don't even know this exist, what it is or the opportunities it presents. Money is another issue. Finding a sponsor/s is critical. Dreaming big, it's essential to have a 2 week training camp for the team before Fargo and organize some type of bus to get out there.

But to blame the Director for lack of interest is a mistake. There was no more interest with Hatcher or whoever else has been there the last 20 years. I understand it's his first year, at least give him a chance and some support instead of bashing him about a 2 day in advance weigh in. That's the least of the problems.

  18. Seeing as how you are wishing to debate the issue... If you don't wrestle the first style you must weigh in before the second. That is pretty cut and dry. You sir are attempting to make a situation fit your argument.

Furthermore, no one at USAW was in support of our chairman's decision. And that substantiates exactly what we are saying!

I'm not debating anything. I'm simply pointing out the facts. Perhaps one reason for the advanced weigh ins is to encourage kids to wrestle both styles (I realize that wasn't an issue at the USAW (TWF). For example if someone wants to wrestle freestyle at the Southeast Regional, they can either 1) Weigh in Friday night, wrestle Greco on Saturday, not weigh in again and wrestle freestyle on Sunday OR 2) If they're too much of a wuss to wrestle Greco, they can weighin Saturday evening and wrestle Freestyle on Sunday. I believe there's even an option to weigh in the morning of if one chooses to

Nowhere did I say I "agreed" with the 2 day in advance weigh in for the USAW (TWF). I did say however, it's really not that big of a deal.
