  1. The middle school isn't bad..The game with Northview ..was back and forth the whole game..Lake Co had a 3 point lead at one time close to the 4th quarter but Jamaal...Justin Blakes little brother had about 3 snowbirds at the end and Northview ended up winning by about 10..Halls,Lake Co,Union City and Northview are all pretty good...Lake Co does have has Andre Flowers little brother..he's pretty good...Kenyon Boldens son..He looks to be about 6'2 and about 240 lbs...lol..But the best two are Dominic Kimble..Justin Blake's cousin and a 7th grader named Zac Coleman..who I believe is the best player...Another version of Sep Valentine or Cedarius Taylor..he can handle a ball that good..no look passes..behind the back ..in traffic..and can shoot...Believe he had about 26 points against Northview this year..a lot of them from outside with someone on him..Jamaal and Little Hub are going to be something special at Dyer Co in a few years because they may end up being 6'5 guards but the Coleman kid was the quickest player on the floor..With Raphael Tyler,Ricky Boyd and a couple p[layers already there and several other freshmen I don't know..And the Giles kid and another player ..I don't know his name but both have been strarting in the absence of the football players and both are probably better players than Raphael Tyler..And with Patrick Roberson being back next year and a new kid that moved in..Cris Rogers,a standout football player that is a sophmore..Word is that he was going to start this year on the basketball team..but I didn't see him the other night dressed out...Even next year and the years after..Lake Co will be one of the teams to beat..Remember...Three Oaks won the middle school state last year for our area and the bunch that are freshmen now..beat that team twice..once by over twenty points in a game dominated by Raphael Tyler, with him scoring about 24 points and holding Cedarius to about 4 points..And the 3rd game in the tournament..had a tie game with under a minute to play and the ball but threw the ball away and Three Oaks went down and scored.. May not have the size in a couple years but will be extremely quick..But if Kenyon Bolden's son grows as expected..could end up being as tall as his dad..about 6'7

That would be Zaravion Coleman. Coach Whitby recruited him away from Danny Farmer at Charleston, Missouri. Lara Kendall and LCHS will have to continue to pass him academically. He is the real deal! The quickest guard I have ever seen! He is very limited in listening and processing. He is now owned by Jimmy! Congrats "Za" good luck on being junior college bound if Brett and Joey can get him a diploma or GED! There is not a better guard in Tennessee!

  2. I dont like to speculate but, in this case, let me speculate. You sound a lot like a player who rode the pine or the parent of a player who rode the pine. For years Dyersburg competed in one of the toughest districts in the state. He competed with far less talent. The last couple of years things could have been different with a different bounce here or there. Granted, Dyersburg should have gone to state last year but maybe that will make his players even hungrier for it this year.

I am neither. I am a neutral baseball fan who strongly feels the Dyersburg kids need stronger moral guidance and a stronger fundamental teacher to lead them. Just because someone is an alumnus from the school does not mean he is the best candidate for the position. And no, for the record, I have never applied for a teaching job at DHS.

  3. there are other teams with talent

Mr. Taylor, a former teacher, gave Tom the job years ago when more qualified people should have been chosen. He had Raymond King at Ripley among others and could not win there either. I have known Tom since 1990. He has never competed with Phil Clark, Buster Kelso, Jeff Hopkins or Keith Hagen. He has had the best of everything to work with. I figure by now he has learned the game after coaching it for so many years. Most people do. Dyersburg is one of the premier jobs in the area and should compete for a state championship every year. Anything less should be unacceptable.

"Other teams with talent!" That is when coaching should make the difference. Six kids commit during the high school season! Cmon, that's phenemonal! You should win it all Tom!

  4. On April 11th, J.B. White was the 6th Dyersburg Senior to sign a national letter of intent to further their baseball career at the next level. He will be playing for the Lambuth Eagles next season. White is the number two pitcher in the rotation, standing an intimidating 6'6", he shut down Christian Brothers giving up 2 earned runs up until he was took out in the bottom of the 6th.

White joins Les Smith (UL Lafayette), Matt Chandler (Mineral Area), Tyler Childress, Mike Brown, and Cole Dickerson (Dyersburg State) as another Trojan senior to play college baseball.

Congrats and Good Luck to these gifted young men. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

hmm, why can't Tom Mathis ever win the big one with all that talent?

  5. Hey Nut! You guys keep working hard. I hope the coaching search goes well. Just bust your tail every day and do right and you guys will succeed.

Wardawg, how did your interview go? I think you would be an excellent choice to lead this football program! <_<

  6. Actually, from what I have heard, USJ is going to be in a heap of trouble for this. Is is not the damage controlled thing you folks are talking about. USJ has lost their Championship ball from last year according to reports, and will have to forfeit all of their football games from this past season. If that is because two kids were late on tuition, I might eat my hat. I think USJ should be banned from all TSSAA STate Tournament for at least 5-10 years for even attempting to pay a child's tuition.

HMMMMMMMM, for so odd reason their Headmaster Steve Maloan resigned last week and in today's Jackson Sun for headmaster Don Coffey was rehired!!!!!!!!!!!!!The timing looks very suscipious! <_<

  7.

I beg to differ on the NS defense. OC only had a total of 17 baskets. The rest were free throws. NS had a total of 30 baskets.

fouling is not DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Many people confuse the two :(

  8. First off,I want to congratulate the Lady Falcons and Lady Yellow Jackets..Last night was a special night for girls basketball in West Tennessee, further proving that District 14A has the most parity of any 1A district in the state.....Here's hoping Lake County and Greenfield can represent the district in the state tournament...

Now for something that may cause some debate......

Last night, the two best possible representitives of the district DID NOT make the sub-state round....Gleason had beaten Lake County THREE times during the season and district tournament.....Same with Union City and Greenfield..Union City had beaten Greenfield THREE times without defeat....You cannot make me believe the best two teams won last night...Yes,they were better on this particular night, but not overall....I know this is the way our system is made up now,but there is a problem with a state tournament sysyem that can actually reward a team that could possibly have three losses in the district and region tournaments a state championship....You don't see it in The NCAA tournament, which to me is the ultimate tournament scenario....

I don't mean a team can lose to a particular team three times during a season and move on...I mean you can win the first round of the district and then go on to lose the next two games, but move on to the regionals.....You can win the first two games of the region, then lose the final and move on to the sub-state..That is a 4-3 record and you can go to the state tournament and go on to win.....A 7-3 record in the tournaments can win you a state championship....Something just doesn't seem right about that.....I know it's been that way for a long time, but it's just something for people to think about...

What happened last night though, will make for some big rivalries the next few years in this district and region...Something else was proven during this region tournament....District 13A has a WAYS to go before it will be able to compete on a level with 14A...Same on the boys side....Again,congrats to the winners and do our district proud and make it to the state and bring home a gold ball.....

Excellent point!!!!! In post season when you lose your season should be over! I'm sure you've heard the phrase, "It's hard to beat a team three times in one season!" How about 4 or 5 times in one season! The pendulum swings over to the underdog after being beat 3 or 4 times in a season. Loser has nothing to lose, and the winner has everything to lose! I agree with you, lose a game season should be over! But there would be a lot less revenue for the member schools in each district and region! And by all means don't forget TSSAA's percentage 25-30%??? not sure, off the top before any tournament expenses are paid or shares distributed to schools.

  9. CAN'T NOBODY GUARD HER...she was being double and triple teamed by the #1 team in state with a 30-1 record and still dropped 34 on them ;)

and got beat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sure Dudley would have rather scored only 8-10 points and won! If she's that great a player she should get her teammates shots! Basketball is still a team game and she knows that! She could easily score 23 points and get her teammates the ball in a position to finish (score) and they might win! More teammates were involved (balanced scoring attack) in this game than previously, correct? See my po :D int!

  10. Man, Shane get the hoodlums out of the program! They are destroying the 1st class reputation of Union City! Maybe Art Sparks and Bill Thompson ought to have a talk with you about their ....... <_<

I was referring to Coach's infidelities with both spouses involved! Living the life of a coach as a divorcee can have it's temptations! Stay straight, Coach and continue to aggresively discipline whenever necessary to preserve this excellent school! Whether that discipline is in your or the team's lives! Union City community deserves it! :thumb:

  11. Why has he run them off???

AOC, Bryant is a disciplinarian and has proven he can win without the star! Kids do not want to play for a disciplinarian! They would rather go 5-22 and do things their way. Parents love to see their child score 40 and do not mind the team losing! The players that remain are committed and are just not ready for this level. There's a lot of difference in a 14-15 yr. old mind and body playing against a 19 yr. old! Bryant is a team player and understands how to construct a BASKETBALL team! He's not gona sacrifice the truth to pamper and accomodate the so called stars who walk around the halls and behave the way they want to! I admire Coach Driver for his courage to work with limited athletes to choose from. This game is almost sacred and must be led and taught correctly! Stay strong Coach Driver. Lonnie Grady understands running the Christian race and supports the right way! As a neutral observer, I wish SF community the best with your children! Parents need to teach and discipline their children and support Coach Driver's work. The players who are playing now, their parents are also to be commended for their tireless comittment! Everyone needs to win a game at least every once in a while! To: SF players keep working! "Good things take a while and they should!"

  12. Let me break it down for ya.....

Union City played Bolivar,Haywood County,Liberty and Trigg Co.Ky WITHOUT 5 players that were playing football.......They played Forrest City,Ark. without 1 player(starter)due to a suspension...They played Lake County without 4 players due to suspension and Humboldt they played without one player due to suspension...

They counted EVERY game they played, including the HOF games in Bolivar, even when they didn't have to......Union City's record is 22-7....

What I am saying is this...When Union City has all it's players together, they have not lost a game.....

Man, Shane get the hoodlums out of the program! They are destroying the 1st class reputation of Union City! Maybe Art Sparks and Bill Thompson ought to have a talk with you about their ....... :thumb:

  13. chester county, team did'nt play team ball ,and yes they shut down thomas , but she also got realzie, that she have four other girl out, there she going half up to up that ball.if she go to run point ,she need to start set up some play, instead of getting trap like that, them she got no where to go, and the offical call some bad stuff on chester county. that stink .and there coach need to tell her that she need start pass off .but the bobcat got to go chester county ,i'nt from chester county but i was at the game .but from what i heard there best defense game, was at liberty.they got to play as a team. miss thomas nos, that she going too ole miss but she need ,to play team ball that what i see.

Which school has an English teacher who failed to teach you how to spell and write correctly? Your points are well taken but you have or have had a teacher in the past who neglected her responsibility of teaching you how to write. :(

  14. Obion County has been a team of highs and lows all year long. i think they might of finally tuned it around and learned what it takes. They got down 12-0 against crockett in the first 3 minutes of the game thursday night. trhey went into halftime down fifteen and the lead ballooned to 21 before central mounted a terrific comeback to take the lead by one with under a minute to play. after a few swapped buckets and crockett up by one, central gets one last shot and fails to convert and lose by only three to arguably the best team in district 13aa. the way central battled back and played exactly the opposite central teams in their recent history has, have they turned it around? i believe that they have and are in the makings of something special.

I want to discuss something that has been on my mind for a while. It is very unfortunate that Coach Davis was dismissed from the basketball program at OCCHS. Russ Davis is an excellent person! This tells me some things about Barry Jones! When you come into a situation like this the only way to succeed is to do things the way YOU want them done! Because when he gets fired he would have at least stood for what he believed in. Coach Jones has done that! This also tells me some things about about Barry Jones. But ya know, It would've been an awesome thing for a father to have the opportunity and privilege to be a part of this program with his son! I have to believe Russ brought good things to the table! If nothing else his recognition of district opponents and their personnel. I've coached against Russ for 18 years. I first met him in 1984 playing against him in college baseball. I consider him a good friend! It's sad to hear what has unfolded. I would love to see the Rebels Program revisit their past successes. Has anybody thought that the current administration may be part of the problem? Schools will only be as effective as their educational leadership! Do students, parents, and teachers feel supported from their administrator? From an outsider perspective, it appears there has been a decline in school pride. It appears to me school does not seem as fun as it once was. This reflects a much deeper problem than athletics! School and community pride can be affected by athletics cause 60-75% of students, parents and community are involved. It is my hope the Principal sees that teachers feel it urgent to have students working on something from bell to bell! I hope the Principal makes his teachers feel they are highly valued. I hope he remembers to ask his teachers before inputing educational changes! When all involved are made to feel they are valued at school, the excellence has begun! Your children deserve these feelings! I hope Barry gets the opportunity to coach his children one day! I'm quite sure he will rethink his decisions with this experience! Coach Jones I wish you good luck in your quest! Many times things have to get worse before they get better! Things have been worse for quite a while now! Perhaps Russ should have been more of a moral/spiritual choice for Barry; rather than a basketball decision. These are my thoughts...

  15. Here we go with the excuses. Just say that we have a good team and be done with it. I think that the Lady Tomcats came to your place and gave you all you wanted then too.

Wescharge "called the shot!" if you will remember he had many great things to say about the Lady Tomcats after their first game. He's a straight shooter! Congrats! Lady Tomcats, Westview will be just fine! Now the ladies will return refreshed and compete as well as ever. Players don't learn as much about individual and team performances when you win all the time. Isn't this a nice problem to have in your program! I wonder how many coaches would love to have this problem! Players learn dramatically after a loss! Achievers analyze, make adjustments, and become a stronger unit because of the experience. I do not think it would be wise to trash or make fun of this team!!!!! "They may be coming to a gym near you!" Wescharge wasn't too sick cause he made it to church this morning! I did notice something stuck in his coat! Maybe he's saving that pukebag for someone else at the end of the season! lol Thanks Westview for raising the bar! That's the way I see it!

  16. Why not make statements over the radio about how UTM needs local players to help turn around the program. I remember about ten years ago when Bethel College recruited players from local schools like Gleason(Sawyers,McKee, Crowe and Crowe) and Dyersburg(Hudson) and later Big Sandy and were very competative. I realize Bethel is nowhere close to OVC schools, but looking at it, UTM this year isn't either. I have moved away from West Tenn but still keep up with sports there when I can. UTM was down then, and still are. I would like nothing better than UTM to succeed, but if they can't, at least do it with local players instead of out of state players that no one has heard of, or for that matter will hear of(being that noing is going to watch them).

tonight they beat the 1st place team in the OVC, Samford by8 points............

  17. You're probably right about that..I like the brand of basketball Whitby plays..but two things I wish he would do...don't sub the best players just because the 3 minute mark rolls around every 3 minutes just to give the players a rest..see how the game is going and who is having a good game...And the other...try playing a zone every once in awhile...We may have to try something different if we lose Copeland...Middle College was killing us man to man down low and in rebounding...I'm not sure if they are a great outside shooting team..Just my opinion..But he's the coach...No matter..I still like that he just let's them play..

How many times have you ever seen it happen.... By post season through injuries, kids quit, foul trouble, family trouble, legal trouble, or grade trouble, the team who comes out on top usually gets something from a role player that's well above the norm out of that person. Your greatest strength is your greatest weakness! He's strengthening the weaker links so that his overall depth will enhance his club by the end of the season. Great players on great teams always have to sacrifice minutes for the good of the team! Does this make sense? We don't have the full objective day to day picture of these kids work habits or behaviors. He is also challenging kids at times to see how they react thru adversity! You can rest assured Coach Whitby has thought about all the angles before dealing with players!

  19. Boo wins it. Congrats.

My thoughts on the selections of 2A football winners: Chris Donald, did he not have better statistics than "Boo". I'm sure he is an outstanding young man but he didn't even have the best year as a running back on his own team much less more deserving than Lindsey or Guy. Guy would have been my pick but I figured Lindsey would get the award. Brandon Warren? Character an issue! Prior to the playoffs he already had been ejected earlier in the season around week 2 or 3! Should this not have eliminated him from consideration? Cmon, who votes on these awards? TSSAA did you intervene, should you intervene? I would think you are the organization taking a pounding on this one. Do you really care? I think all the finalists in every classification are probably of good character even Brandon Warren, but his slip ups should not allow him to earn this prestigious award. What was the reasoning and logic in Weathers being selected? Am I seeing this wrong? Gimme some feedback

  20. They could also petition the T$$AA to go back to 2A after two years......But with Union City losing so many seniors and going to be very young the next few years, don't look for it to happen....(HINT...This would be the time to close the gap on Union City)

You also have to realize Union City played in 2A with a 1A enrollment the last 4 years..Coach Barnes led them to the playoffs his last year there with those numbers.....

    excellent point!

  21. Well well well, everyone in East and West Tennessee are leaving one important region out of the mix and that is region 5. Goodpasture, DCA, and CPA will compete for that West spot in the buro and if you think Milan, Westview, and Huntingdon are better than all of those teams then you are crazy. Alcoa will have trouble with Goodpasture and DCA, IMO. Whoever represents the West will have been tested in the playoffs, however Alcoa will have a pretty easy walk, which I think will hurt them in the title game, but that is my opinion what do I know.

    I think that's a good assessment!
