  1. This was suppose to be the game of the year a couple weeks ago. What has happen? Hillsboro seems to be back healthy, confident, and "up & running". Overton is down and out following a 7-0 win over Hunters Lanes. Both teams have great athletes, anything could happen?

    Any thoughts or predictions?

    I'm going Hillsboro 35 Overton 14

    Hillsboro 41 Overton 7

    Clayton has the Burros rolling.

  2. I will also go with the Burros.  They have the best players in Metro and now they have the best coaches in Metro.  This equals a Hillsboro win.  I not only see the Burros as one of the favorites in 5A, I have them already penciled in that spot.

As for Franklin/McGavock game, I think it could go either way.  A few years ago this would be a easy pick, but now I might have to lean toward McGavock.

  3. In a sense; recruiting has become part of High School football. Let's face it, in a world where Private schools openly pirate middle schools Public School Coaches must establish a recruiting-foot just to maintain their "zoned" athletes. The phrase "coach your own kids" does not apply anymore, because "your own kids" are open to everybody else, and if you want to coach them... you must defend/recruit them!

Not to mention that transfers like Vic Wharton, Gaulden, and Hurd have made teams suddenly competitive. If coaching is your job, why wouldn't you want to become suddenly competitive?

Right on Speedkills.  It just is kinda crazy how a kid could practice with one school and then immediately start working with another school and there be no address change.  Open Zone is just as bad as the privates.

  4. What's with the radio silence out of Williamson County? No info from Indy or Franklin? It's also my understanding that these scrimmages took place against Rutherford Schools... maybe the SEC of TN football can provide some intel?

I read on another thread that Franklin beat Smyrna.  I heard that they beat Riverdale too, but it was much closer.  District 11 might be the same as last year.  Ravenwood 1, Indy 2, Franklin 3, and Centennial 4.  Although I did hear that Centennial went with Riverdale too so maybe the Riverdale fans could have some thoughts on spring looks.

  5. Hillsboro 5/6 -- Station Camp 2

***In a hybrid scrimmage that used some odd mix of 10-play & Down-and-distance where scoring was hard to keep track of at times.***

Hillsboro once again looked aggressive on offense, scoring fluidly on the ground & screen game (#20 looked impressive). HHS missed on a handful of deep balls where the receiver had a step that would have made the score more obnoxious. Hillsboro did protect the ball, eliminate penalties, and protect the QB with ease.

HHS' Defense stifled the running game of station camp, and forced 3 turnovers (one of which was returned for a TD). Their secondary looked suspect allowing a couple of deep balls for Station Camp TDs.

Seems like the Burros may be for real and the team to beat in 5A?

  6. Any results??

Hillsboro knocked off Brentwood 5td's- 0. Pretty good showing by the Burros. Both teams missing some starters. Hillsboro looks legit. Brentwood was very physical but the Burros speed caused problems.

    Any other results/observations?

This comes as no surprise.  Hillsboro has a great coaching staff that is used to winning games against Brentwood.  I have said it on another thread.  With the talent that they have at Hillsboro and the coaching staff that they have, they could be the team that goes to championship from the west side.

  7. your right. My bad. Indy finished 2nd.

Just wanted to make sure you got that right.  No need to worry as Franklin chose a couple of years ago that they no longer want to finish in the top of the district.  They let their coach go to another school and that is the school that will be finishing top two in their district.  Powers at be chose to be happy with less than that.

  8. How will Ravenwood respond to their district championship? Can Franklin finally make a push out of 2nd place (where they have finished 5 out of the last 6 years). Can Indy replace their SEC commits. Can Centennial upgrade their two-headed offensive monster (Sanders and Hall). What will Brentwood do to try and return to the playoffs after their first postseason miss in a decade and a half. Can Summit and Dickson County contend for a playoff sport after both struggled last year. This spring each team will work hard and by this fall we may have some answers. Thoughts?

Franklin has not finished 2nd for the past two years so your statement is incorrect.  This is also the same time that they made a coaching change.  Interesting thought.

  9. Hillsboro out of a Middle Tn will be loaded this year. 17 starters return lead by top 3 player in the state Kyle Phillips who has 25 plus offers and Vincent Perry who holds an SEC offer from KY.. Should be a great year for them..

Beech will be solid as usually, but 5A in Middle TN is down a little compared to past few years.

Hillsboro is loaded with talent every year.  They now have a coach that can win with that talent.  With Hillsboro coaching staff, I think they will win 12AAA and compete for the 5A state championship.  Clayton is a proven coach and he has great assistants over there.  We have seen them in 7 on 7 tournaments and they can play.

  10. I think this CPA team could compete with some college teams.  They are out of their league in the world of AA HS sports.  They enjoy putting on the show with their alley-oops and tricks etc., and creaming the teams they play.  CPA's AD said so himself in a recent Tennessean article:

"We've enjoyed competing in Division I and would like to continue to do so for as long as we're permitted," said Christ Presbyterian Academy athletics director Mike Ellson.

I'm not even sure where he sees what they are doing as competition.  Don't get where the enjoyment comes in either, as I personally find closer matched teams/games far more interesting to watch.

I'm sure Elison and CPA have enjoyed competing in Div I and would like to continue.  If they get put in Div II they would probably have to play with the likes of Ensworth, BA, MBA for ALL SPORTS.  Not sure on their enrollment, but if not then they play in the small division that NO ONE even knows about who is in it.

  11. Great article and shows why there should be a split.  All everyone worries about is Basketball and Football and in reality the privates dominate the minor sports.  The publics just get so uproared about FB and BB.  Watch the A-AA spring sports and see the vast majority of private school participants.  No one is saying that they are all recruited, but it is apples to bowling balls comparing the advantages that the privates have.

  12. Lets put this argument into another context. Look at college football. Their is three divisions (FBS, FCS, and DIII). DIII schools cannot offer athletic scholarships. Should they be forced to play against Alabama and such? Is that a level playing field? We would all agree not. Do the smaller DIII schools bring a huge crowd to get beat up on by the big guys? No.They still play them during the regular season, but not when it comes to postseason play.

I like Gerry Bertier points about finances. If we had games against similar sized public schools, and private schools played similar private schools, attendance would skyrocket. As it is now, CPA could not draw a decent crowd because no one wants to see a thirty or forty point blowout except the fans of the school winning.

I also take exception to the comments from private school supporters who say if public schools want to win, work harder and fundraiser more to get the same things as private schools. The real world doesnt work that way. If you are in a rural school system and every sport is trying to raise money, the same people get asked over and over and can only do so much. They dont have large bank accounts or write a check when something is needed. When half your school is on free and reduced lunch yet we are supposed to beg and plead for more money to build a  weight room when they cannot afford to buy lunch for their kids how is this equal or level?

We hear a lot about private vs. public and the spilt. But I have to ask private school supporters a questions that bugs me every time this discussion comes up. Why do private schools fear playing private schools? Private schools claim publics are trying to get rid of them and they should work harder and work for more things to get on a level playing field with the privates, but the privates will fight tooth and nail to not have to play the other private schools. Privates school supports bash on public school supports for wanting to equal things out but when my question is raised private school supporters use the same argument to not play other privates that the publics use to not play privates.  I know private schools are used to getting their way, but you make the same argument when the question flipped back on you.

    GREAT POST!!!!!!

  13. After reading all of these pro CPA posts, I have come to the conclusion that they are playing by the rules.  They admit MANY TIMES that these are the rules that we have and NO ONE at CPA is doing anything against the rules.  This is why there MUST be a split.  Your right it is ok for the coach of the AAU team, that was handpicked, is able to recruit the kids to show up on campus so that then the CPA officials can talk with them.  Then Work studies is allowed as Aide.  Yes, every student at CPA pays something, but interesting how they can make it work and get that payment down for those that can play the game better than others.  I also know of a private school that took one brother in as a student, but did not admit the other brother.  Interesting that he was not as good of a student and/or basketball player.  That very same family could have gone to the public school and that school would have had no choice but to take both.

  14. Everyone has their opinion and some are very valid.  The bottom line is if schools want to play in Div I then they should not be allowed to give ANY financial aide.  Period!  This includes work studies.  Work Studies is paying off the price that is owed.  This is financial aide.  If the CPA and Nash Chr. of the state would just tell the truth like Ensworth, BA, MUS, etc. most public schools would not gripe.  It is not right when a Lewis Co (football) and Cheatham Co (basketball) has one of its best teams ever (from its own community) and they have to go play a school that gives aide to players from all around the area.

  15. This is another reason why it is fun to play against CPA as you never know who will be in the crowd.  So many Pro sports players and coaches are always at the games whether football or basketball.

    CPA BOYS BASKETBALLâ€@cpa_basketball2 hrs

Thank you to coaches at CPA last night: @tntitans Coach Ken Whisenhunt & GM Webster, @VandyMBB Stallings, @UofMTigersHoops Kirby @cpalions

I have seen many "pro sports players and coaches" at many games in Davidson, Sumner, and Williamson Counties.

  16. Good luck to Bobby and the Bees. I am afraid you will need more than luck though. I can see them running the score up in this one. Plaster can then pucker up for him even more.

Rooting for the BEES but we all know that you are probably right.  CPA can name the score and yes Plaster will "pucker up."

  17. Let’s review the “architecture†of how the program was built since I have grown tired of how others are unmercifully attacked or mocked on this site when they do share or report an incident:

Devilfanatic/UCsportsfan has stated his son was approached to consider coming to CPA at an AAU game.

Nebuntyn has stated he has a friend of JL’s family and knows JL was recruited to come to CPA.

Rulefollower reports a FB post of JL’s mom contacting the Blackwells about coming to CPA.

Over the years credible sources (and yes I personally know each of these people involved in these different scenarios) report:

“I know for a fact a family received a check each month in the amount of tuition.â€

A parent approached another person simply asking for advice since, “Coach keeps telling me it would be better for my son’s college future if he came to CPA.â€

In the beginning when JL’s mom was involved in a conversation and was asked how it came about of his coming to CPA, her statement was “it was the coach†who invited/encouraged them to look into it, NOT I wanted my son to come play for this coach so we initiated the process of his attending CPA.

It was the mom of a player who let others know she could not afford CPA and when she started looking at other schools, it was the mom who stated, “The coaches were working on it.† Ended up her son was able to stay along with a sibling.

A friend who has a good friend on staff stated there was cheating going on.

A staff member who knew enough about how CB came to CPA to blow the roof off the place (and also knows a lot more).

A person who during a lunch meeting confided how they had been approached to donate funds to help families of players.

A CPA board member who said he knew two board members who had been approached to donate funds to help families of players.

And the list could go on:

And let’s not forget in the past there have been TSSAA violations of being in attendance improperly at an AAU game to watch CPA players, having CPA players on campus during dead period and playing an ineligible player.

All of this has been “pooh-poohed†and anyone who reports or wants to talk about it are the ones who are attacked.  Regardless, these are all facts.  Now if you want to debate whether the sources are credible or if what they say is true or not I suppose is one thing, but without knowing them that would actually be idiotic on anyone’s part to debate or automatically deem it as unfounded accusations from “haters†(course that has never stopped certain posters in the past).  Since I do know these sources are credible, I don’t even worry about it.  They are responsible for the information, not me.  But if you want to continue the song and dance of how special a “three-peat†is, go right ahead.  Some of us happen to feel differently for certain reasons…

The split just needs to happen.  My guess is when CPA wins on Saturday most at Murphy Center will just clap because they are suppose to clap.  In the coaches section most will be rolling their eyes and then Maddux will tweet a S/O to all the college coaches that were in attendance acting as if they came because of him.  The college coaches will come watch PLAYERS at any school.  Of course they will show up to watch CPA because it is a team assembled and chosen because they have that potential.  kbrooks just says it as it is.  He tells what he knows has happened.  I just don't see how all of us can see how easy this is to see yet the TSSAA does nothing but move CPA around from district to district to ease the complaining.

  18. A quick rundown of what Hillsboro has returning for the 2014 Season.

Defensively they return all 4 starting DLineman, which weigh in 250,265,260,330, one of whom in K. Phillips is an absolute monster. 3 LB's, and 2 DB's..

Offensively they return 2 WR, both playmakers who r around 6'2 -6'3. 4 Olineman, 1 in which Phillips plays as well. QB who is a 3 yr starter who stands around 6'1 210, and 3 RB's who all started at some point all year, 1 of which holds an offer from UK.

Craig Clayton, former Franklin High coach, has made the Burros relevant again, so Hillsboro will obviously be well coached. Barring injury, I expect to see Hillsboro play deep into November for the first time since '08.

5A will be a very entertaining class next year

On a side note, congrats to Henry County and Knox West on a great title game. Best of luck to all teams for a good offseason. Can't wait to crank it up again.

5A will run through Henry County and West again next year.  Highlife thanks for the update on Hillsboro.  You are obviously a coach for them or someone that has the Hillsboro media guide in front of them.  You sure know alot about them.  Best of luck to you
