  1. Dyer County paid for none of their gear for girls and boys basketball. They're sponsored by Nike... Bottom line

GC I agree/respect most of your posts dealing with girls basketball but comparing Dyer County to Riverdale is comparing apples to oranges.  If Dyer County is Nike sponsored then it's because of some strings being pulled here/there.  I know they have experienced a few successful boys seasons, but many other high schools have done the same and more and aren't Nike sponsored.  As for the girls team, they ought to be thankful every day they get to put on a uniform sponsored by Nike................

  2. Guess, I'll see Monday, just found out Crockett has a new girls (ladies) coach. Mmmmmm that young lady could coach xand she seemingly had Coffman number at the end of the season...........the young lady did a heck of a job with them, if she moved on to another school they got a good coach....

So doesn't it make you wonder if she was such a good coach why is she not still coaching???  She was handed a solid team that talent wise should've beat Dyersburg every time they played them.  How she gained her head coaching position and the reason she lost it were both shady and unethical.  She had another coaches number alright, but it wasn't Coffman's.
  3. Did Crockett Girls get a new coach.... I have not been keeping up...I did see where their boys coach was reassign or something.... Just wondering, I am very concern about who Dyersburg gets.....I hope its someone that will keep the program going upward, especially with the county on the rise...

Dyersburg's program has been solid since Coffman was there and will continue to be solid because of the winning tradition and the young ladies who believe in that program.  They have great talent returning and great up and coming talent.  Plus they get to play basketball in the most competitive and fun girls district in West TN.  No disrespect intended, but I don't see how the county has anything to do with this?  And exactly what are they "on the rise" from?  They've had the same coach for the past 5 or 6 years, been average at best, last year was supposed to be their year to go far and they didn't. Don't fret slick1, Lady Trojans will be just fine.

  4. Life. The sun comes back up tomorrow and life goes on. Riverdale will get back on track next year. #ArrowsUp

Why do you choose to take out any human/emotional relevance to what's happened?  While life does go on, the sun may not be shining for quite some time in the players and families who had their high school season end like this.  A coach can be a coach for many years, but high school players only have a short time in high school. The ramifications of these coaches actions will go on long past this year.

  5. Someone needs to start posting videos/examples of teams that overachieved, teams that beat better opponents, teams with heart and desire, teams with coaches who go above and beyond to do the right thing.  Those are the stories of winners and the ones we all like to hear.  I'm gonna be looking for some to share.  Anyone got something?

  6. I don't believe for ONE second every player/parent/fan of these two schools would look these coaches in the eye and say they agree with the decisions made.  Tradertwo you are exactly correct by saying this is a cowards way out, plain and simple.  Many coaches might "think" of ways or scenarios to benefit their teams but most of them have enough respect for themselves and their players to not go about it the way these two did.  We could all argue forever on this discussion because warriorfan is only looking at the rules and strategies of the game and the others of us know that it is about SO much more.  What's really sad is that the two teams and coaches aren't gonna be recognized for the great things they may have done this year...............................they're gonna be remembered for blatantly disrespecting high school athletes and sports programs.

  7. Just FYI, it wasn't Westview's admin and coaches that didn't want to play. Dyersburg's AD had a fit about playing the games too! Westview got out in tractors this morning to work on the parking lot just to get it to where the games could be played. If they wanted the easy way out, they wouldn't have went to that extent to make sure the games were played.

However, the championship was decided on the court tonight with Westview winning against Obion Co for the 3rd time this season. If you were at the game, I would say that McMillan for Westview was the difference in the game. With the MVP of the district out for Westview, a lot of question marks were in place as to how good they would be now. McMillan is one of the ones that has stepped up to help fill Sams' void. Should be a fun region tournament!

Wow........why would you want to place blame on someone else?  And why on earth would Dyersburg AD not want to play games?  That makes no sense. Westview is the host and the "extent" to make sure the parking lot is safe for players and fans is their job and their job alone.  Just like every other school that was hosting had to work to get their parking lot and  facilities ready.  The difference is most other schools didn't wait until Sunday to do it.  I personally had a good time at the games at Westview and thought the people and hospitality room were great.  But let's not point fingers at another school or AD for a job or decision that belonged to Westview.

  8. Why is this all about Coach Barrett at Riverdale?  All you guys do is focus on him because he is successful and you hate the Riverdale program for their tradition.  Smyrna won over 20 games as well this year along with beating Oakland, and came within 1 point of beating #4 in the nation (M A X P R E P S) Potters House.  Smyrna isn't a pushover.  If you listen to the radio podcast, the head coach for Smyrna (Middleton) pulled his starters first.  You all just make it about Riverdale because you cant stand them as only  2-3 teams in the state can possibly beat them year in and year out.  Riverdale has only 5 upper classmen, and they are loaded with athletes for years to come. It is not an issue of inferior talent and being scared of Blackman.  Riverdale has played Blackman twice competitively, and won 3 of the 8 quarters they have gone head to head with them.   They just chose to go about their road to the state on a different path.  Coach Barrett's character is beyond great.  He broke no rules, nor did Coach Middleton at Smyrna.  You are very naive if you think coaches don't strategize their positions in brackets.  It happens more than you think.  Until the TSSAA looks at how they do brackets, it is not a coaches fault for figuring out positioning.  As for what it teaches the kids, it teaches them teamwork.  When the team wins, they all win....when the team looses, all the kids loose.  They function as a team and everyone knows their role.  Kind of like a chess game.

You guys are making way too much out of this.   :bored:

I mostly watch 13 AA  ball so I can honestly tell you my comments on this issue don't come from any jealousy or hatred to Riverdale, and I don't know the coach's name or face.  But I can tell you this without knowing him.  If he is a man with any character he should be regretting the coaching decision he made in this game.  Totally disgraced himself, his girls, his school and the game of basketball.  I don't care if it happens all the time or not.  At least have enough respect to not make an open mockery of the game.  In 20 years of watching girls and boys ball in our district, I can tell you I've never seen a coach intentionally throw a game. What I have seen often is underdog teams or less-talented teams win big games and championships because of the heart and determination of its players and coaches.  Basketball games aren't played with chess pieces, they're played with human beings.  And gold balls are won with more than strategy and x's and o's of the game alone.  They are won because of a belief and passion and desire to be winners.  This coach missed the mark on this one.

  9. I bout fell off the couch watching the 2nd video.  Take a look at them shooting free throws and notice the big poster hanging behind the goal.  I can't read all of it but I can read enough to know that the belief inspired on the poster was definitely not displayed in the coaching strategy for this game........very hypocritical.

  10. Hope i dont hear of these teams purposely trying to lose like i did tonight with 15-AA. Covington and Ripley led both of the games at half. Upon both teams hearing scores from Memphis, pulled the starters in the third quarter. Thats not cool IMO. You dont stop playing because you dont want to face a certain team. Also heard RIverdale girls did it also. TSSAA needs to look at this.

I heard about that too and if it's true then it's a disgrace.  No teams in 13AA trying to purposely loose.  We just want to be able to play our freakin games.

  11. I'd be interested in knowing how the other school's ADs felt about playing today.  I mean all 3 schools traveling to Martin have a pretty straight shot on well traveled roads.  I can't imagine those roads didn't have a clear driving path today.  Those boys and coaches deserve the right to play it out.  If I'm Obion I'm really ticked if I don't get a shot at a #1 spot.  Does the host AD get to make all final decisions?  What about the money lost if games don't get played?  You'd think TSSAA would not be happy about that.

  12.

I think we all just have cabin fever and we're ready to play ball, but I must admit the decisions regarding this tourney and weather have been pretty silly.

I will just have to settle for listening to bolivar/lexington girls on the radio here in a bit.  I think I got some microwave popcorn in the cabinet.

  13. I was just thinking the same thing Forked Deer..........how conveniently  that would work out for Westview.  But since previous post says we're playing tomorrow hopefully it won't come down to that.  Westview is the favorite to win it but it still would be more fair to let the boys decide it on the court for themselves.  I still call bologna and we should have played our games today.  Maybe I'm just being selfish and tired of not getting to play our games.  Ice and snow now flood.....oh my!

  14. I would think it would have to get done.  I'm not understanding the hold up.  Everyone around us is getting their games done.  The high today is 46.  I would think game times for today would be fine, but if need be why not move to later in day?  It's gonna stink for parents and fans if we end up playing on Monday, same day as our girls.  Union City and Martin people how are roads your way?  The main ones in Dyersburg are fine.

  15. If that is the case, go ahead and ship the gold ball east of the MS river.  McNAiry has less than nothing so dyersburg becomes guilty by association and is just as bad.  I would take the top for A teams versus the top AA teams in West TN anyday.  Elizabethton wins the ball in AA.  The rest are playing for table scraps..

Crockett only beat McNairy by 8 early in the season too.  It doesn't make Dyersburg anything but what a few of us have been saying already......young and inexperienced in several spots outside of Myah.  With that kind of team you're gonna have some inconsistency.  Everyone knew AA in West TN was down this year.  That's what has made it an up/down anyone can win any night season in 13AA.  Looks like it's turned out the same way in 14AA.  If this white stuff will ever get out of here we can have some fun seeing which team is gonna show up and play the best here at the end. :popcorneater:

  16. I took a look at Bolivars record and if it's correct it's got them beating SS but also losing to them by almost 30.  It's got them beating Lexington but then again with a loss to them by almost 30.  It shows them losing to McNairy by 1pt.  Somebody who's seen them play explain the difference in their level of play to same teams?  Just looking at the scores on paper from that side it's hard to figure out who is truly the dominant team.  Looks sort of like our district.  Whoever is playing the best on any given night could be your winner.  I haven't seen any of them play so someone shed some light.  I do however know one thing from playing in Bolivar in the past.  You better wear a tank top and shorts cuz that gym will flat out burn you up.

  17. I may be wrong about this but this was really Crockett's year to be the favorite with them having most players returning from last year and Dudley's work with them in past.  Westview and Dyersburg both are playing with couple returning starters and host of other young players.  So Westview has definitely risen to the challenge.  Dyersburg was rising to the challenge, but for whatever reason has struggled as of late.  We had one of our sloppiest games last night and still came somewhat close to pulling it out.  It's no secret we rely on Myah much of the time and she has earned that right, but sometimes it seems she lets the pressure of that mess with her head too much instead of just playing her game.  I love the girl and think she's an outstanding athlete.  The best of players will have off nights.  But I also know she has to do her part here down the stretch cuz our younger girls don't have any tourney playing experience.  This district is always tough no matter what the talent level is.  It's always a battle with the top 3 or 4 every year.  I guess that's what makes it so much fun................and stressful

  18. I can definitely see them being a contender next year.

The Lady Trojans have been in a major slump for one reason: poor shooting from 3.  That starts with Myah, and when teams guard her well and someone else doesn't step up and hit shots, things don't flow as they should. Tonight they were on, and E Bailey being there for 10 points in the paint and solid rebounding was clutch.  If the 3 buffoons that offiaciated the boys contest tonight don't ref in Martin and Hart and Taylor play well, it will be one heck of a game.  Getting there early to watch SGC and Westview too.  The Lady Hornets have been playing very well as of late.

Okay-I don't usually like to complain about officials but since you started it I'm gonna put my two cents in. Why call 10 fouls in the first 4 minutes of the game??  43 fouls in all!  Is this really necessary?  And it wasn't one sided or anything, pretty even fouls called on both teams.  I've watched 2 games in the past week or so with foul totals in the 40s.  Totally messes with the flow of the game and makes it not fun to watch and I'm sure worse to try to play in.  One of those refs I think calls a tech in every single game he officiates.....what's up with that?  You're being too kind to call them buffoons.  Now that I've complained I bet we see them at Westview.

  19. Friday night's game of Westview vs Dyersburg @ Dyersburg should be a good one. Close to tournament time and teams are starting to peak. Will Dyersburg be able to stop Westview's point guard and have some of their other players be able to step up and compliment Myah's play? Or will Westview be able to stop Myah and have some players step up and knock down shots?? Only time will tell :)

Well I think both your questions were answered tonight........Myah had around 5 points and I think Westview's point guard had about the same.  The supporting cast for both teams had to step up and make shots.  It was a battle, as it always is in this district.

  20. In addition to her basketball, track, and GPA accomplishments noted on the above post, Myah Taylor was voted basketball homecoming queen by the Dyersburg student body a few weeks ago.  This speaks volumes about her character and the respect she has among her peers.  She is a positive presence on the basketball court, not only by the way she plays, but by the way she encourages her teammates and strives to make all of them better.  She definitely is deserving of a AA Miss Basketball title.

  21. While I agree that Myah Taylor should be a Miss Basketball finalist, I think Dyersburg is ranked too high in the state and is not a "favorite for a state championship".

I understand they have a good record with only two losses (to Westview and Haywood Co), but who out of their district have they played that boosts their record? Their strength of schedule for AA is #94 out of 107. Who wouldn't have that good of a record while playing teams like that??

In my opinion, Westview is the underdog of the district that is flying high under the radar. Their strength of schedule is #21. They are currently 16-8 with two of those losses coming to Dyer Co (who is #3 in the state in AAA), one to South Side (who is #8 in AA), one to Gibson Co (who is #2 in A), and one to Haywood Co (which also beat Dyersburg), and the other three to Paducah Tilghman, Murray (who are two solid KY teams) and then AA Memphis Craigmont. They are also currently 6-0 in the district. However, everyone claims they are still too young (with only 2 seniors and 2 juniors) to compete in AA this year. Their freshman point guard is leading them right now as if she is a senior and then a sophomore is leading them in scoring.

However, games are decided on the court and not on paper and in posts :)

P.S. Westview is a lot like UTM Women's Basketball this year. No one thought they would do as good as last year after losing key players, but their coaches have found a way to lead them to victories when it matters the most, and they are both sitting undefeated in their district/conference.

Dyersburg is young as well.  Graduated 3 senior starters last year.  If you look at Strength + Success we are ranked 7th.  Don't think we've ever played a pansy schedule.  I am surprised by our high state rankings as well.  If you saw us play at your place I'm sure you weren't impressed. I don't think westview or dyersburg showed full potential that night.  Good luck for the remainder of the season.  Would be nice to both return to state tournament, especially making it with young teams.

  22. Based on some of the close scores they have had with Myah, I can safely say that Dyersburg would not even sniff the top 10 in the state without Myah!

Dyersburg graduated 4 key players off last years team.  They are in rebuilding mode in several positions.  While Myah is handling her senior role nicely, we have had to rely on some young players to step up and help this year.  Nobody expected Dyersburg to blow out teams this year.  When you're overall young and rebuilding you're gonna have close games.  Pulling out wins in close games shows their desire to not settle this year.  I don't really understand your point.  Take away any teams top scorer and their "sniffing" abilities get a little stopped up.

  23. I guess when you get star players from Gibson Co, Halls, Dyersburg, etc you should be the number 1 coach. As for the girls team what did it take.Lets see A guy works for Dyersburg Electric. He had a daughter that was a star player at Dyersburg years ago.Coached AAU ball. Was named the Coach at 3 Oaks.Three Oaks changed their name from Eagles to Choctaws, took the Dyer Co colors and now are a feeder school for Dyer Co.Dyer Co hired him to be an assistant at Dyer Co..So he is able to get his Three Oaks players and talk to AAU players to go to Dyer Co.Wonder why Dyersburg didn't hire him.

I agree mrbigster..........that's a lot of manipulating around to get some wins.  Honestly, I don't think Dyersburg girls need any help, they seem to experience successful seasons just like they are.

  24. I know Dyer Co beat Raliegh Egypt pretty handidly but don't think Dyer Co will be among the elite. If this team was in District 14a the past severalbseasons, think they would have finished 4th bebind Union City, Humbolt and Lake Co.Now if they were in District 14 A this year, thlink they would finish behind Union City and fight fk r 2nd with probably Gibson Co, Lake Co , South Fulton, Humbolt maybe.Probably would give a slight edge to Dyer Co for the 2nd spot.Dont see them beating Westview at all this season, or any of the elite teams that are their size.Dyer Co girls are a different story this year.Gonna be a hard team to beat,Been A long time when Dyer co and their fans had to watch a team pull their starters in the 4th quarter, Can bet Coach Mccord wasn't too happy. Will be surprised if some teams don't run up the score if given a chance as to how Dyer Co has done the past several seasons by pressing the entire game when games were over by halftime

Nobody ever taught DC coach the golden rule.  But you know he was ranked #1 coach in TN/KY so maybe he can make that boys team over achieve.  Heck it's only taken him about 5 years to finally get his girls team winning...............way to go #1 coach.
