  1. Should be two really good games tonight.  All four teams are extremely well coached.  Both are repeats of games played very early in the season with MBA and BA each winning by 3 points.  I have no idea who will win, but there will be some great football tonight!

I know almost nothing about MUS this year other than the scores of their games.  I've just historically seen how they always improve tremendously throughout the year.  MBA is always fundamentally sound in every position.  They just don't make mistakes.  This will be a chess match between two great coaching staffs.

McCallie/BA seems to be very evenly matched.  Their game in early September was close and McCallie had a chance to win it in the final minute.  I don't think McCallie will be as successful in slowing down BA's running game like they were in the first matchup.  The BA QB had a lot of success throwing against their zone, so McCallie will likely change that up.

It is really hard to beat a fairly equally matched team twice in a year.  I think a lot of that is mental ("we beat them before, so we're better than them").  But, I'm going against conventional wisdom today and guessing that MBA and BA both win tight games.

  2. Hats off to JP. They executed a great game plan to start the game and were close to going up 28-3 in the 1st quarter before BA’s second offensive possession. After JP converted a beautiful onside kick at 21-3, BA stopped JP on 4th and 1 around the BA 35. BA got some momentum and scored 28 straight.

Very impressed with the JP program and how much they’ve improved in the last few years. Great skill players and the soph QB is legit!

BA is strong and is playing with a lot of confidence. Almost every game this year has been close, and they’ve won all of them. Semis v McCallie should be fantastic.

  3. Quarterfinal matchups:

    W4 JPII at E1 BA
W3 MUS at E2 Father Ryan
    E3 McCallie at W2 CBHS
    E4 Baylor at W1 MBA

Seems like D2AAA is wide open this year, and anyone can win it.  Let's hope COVID isn't a factor.  All 4 of these games should be very interesting, and I think every one will be tight.  Crazy that both Chatt teams are on the road, but I wouldn't be too surprised if they both win.

My guess - and it is a complete guess - is that the semis will be BA hosting McCallie and MBA hosting Father Ryan.

  4. So are we all just assuming the cutoff will be 550 or so, and Ensworth, BA and MUS will play up?  Unless I am missing something, here are the top 23 D2 schools with enrollment according to the TSSAA (Current D2AAA teams in bold).  There is a natural break between CPA and Notre Dame (448-368).  If the cutoff was somewhere in there, that would leave 16 teams in D2AAA.

  5. 3 teams are vying for only 2 postseason spots in the East: BA, Ensworth and Knox Catholic.  Which 2 advance and who is playing basketball Monday?

BA (vs Baylor): win and in. OR lose and either Ensworth or KC lose.

Ensworth (at McCallie): win and in.  OR lose and either BA win or KC lose.

Knox Catholic (vs Father Ryan): win and BA lose.

This will easily be the most dramatic final week of the regular season for II-AAA (and the previous II-AA before someone decided eight state champions just weren't enough) going back several years, in large part because the stakes are higher with not everyone making the playoffs.

Totally agree!  In years past, it was always strange playing regular season games to simply determine seeding.  Of course, winning was always important.  But losing may have only meant you had to play on the road one round earlier in the playoffs.  Now, losing could mean you're not even making the playoffs.

Interesting thought: Assuming Knox Catholic wins and Ensworth loses, the outcome of the BA/Baylor game will determine whether it's KC or Ensworth who miss the playoffs.  Has Ensworth EVER rooted for BA to win a game???  Ha!  (If BA beats Baylor, Ensworth makes the playoffs regardless of the outcome of their game vs. McCallie, right?)

One week to go until the playoffs. This should be fun.

    II-AAA East
    McCallie 4-0 (8-1) [vs Ensworth]
    Baylor 3-1 (8-1) [at BA]
    BA 2-2 (6-3) [vs Baylor]
    Ensworth 2-2 (6-3) [at McCallie]
Knox Catholic 1-3 (6-3) [vs FRHS]

McCallie is the #1 seed, meaning they won't have to leave Chattanooga again until the state title game, should the Blue Tornado make it that far.

Baylor is already in, but that was the case even before Friday. They have clinched no lower than the #3 seed.

Baylor will get the #2 seed with a win, or with a loss *and* an Ensworth win at McCallie. Baylor would have the most overall wins of the three teams at 3-2 in that scenario, then BA would get the #3 seed and Ensworth the #4 seed. With a loss and an Ensworth loss, Baylor would be the #3 seed behind BA.

BA gets the #2 seed with a win *and* a McCallie win over Ensworth. BA gets the #3 seed with a win and an Ensworth win (as noted above, Baylor would be the #2 seed with most overall wins).

BA gets the #3 seed with a loss *and* a loss by both Ensworth and Catholic. BA gets the #4 seed with a loss *and* an Ensworth win. BA misses the playoffs with a loss *and* wins by both Ensworth and Catholic.

Ensworth gets the #3 seed with a win *and* a BA loss. Ensworth gets the #4 seed with a loss *and* a loss by Catholic. Doomsday scenario for the Tigers is a three-way tie 3-2: an Ensworth loss, a BA loss, and a Catholic win. Catholic with the most overall wins gets the #3 seed, BA with the heads-up gets the #4 seed, and Ensworth is out.

Catholic will need some help. They need to beat Father Ryan *and* have BA lose against Baylor to make the playoffs. In that scenario, Catholic gets the #3 seed with an Ensworth loss or the #4 seed with an Ensworth win.

And with FRHS at Catholic starting a half-hour earlier than Baylor at BA, I could imagine Catholic if they win watching the live stream from Brentwood (dunno about Baylor, but I know for a fact BA will be streaming the game live/free) to find out whether they will make the playoffs.

    II-AAA West
    Briarcrest 4-0 (9-0) [vs. MUS]
    MUS 3-1 (8-1) [at Briarcrest]
    MBA 3-1 (5-4) [vs CBHS]
    CBHS 2-2 (6-3) [at MBA]

We know the teams making the playoffs here, but not the order. Briarcrest has clinched a quarterfinal playoff home game. The Saints will be the #1 seed with a win over MUS or the #2 seed with a loss.

MUS would get the #1 seed with a win at Briarcrest. MUS would get the #2 seed with a loss and a CBHS win over MBA. MUS would get the #3 seed with a loss and an MBA win over CBHS.

MBA can't get the #1 seed, and in a three-way tie at 4-1 would actually be the #3 seed (eliminated from the tiebreaker on overall wins, with MUS the #1 seed from beating Briarcrest as that scenario would necessitate, and then Briarcrest the #2 seed with the head-to-head over MBA). If MBA wins and MUS loses, MBA will be the #2 seed.

CBHS will be on the road in the quarterfinals. CBHS will be the #3 seed if they can win at MBA, regardless of the outcome of MUS/Briarcrest. Otherwise, it's the #4 seed and a long bus ride from Memphis to Chattanooga to face McCallie.

Great, detailed analysis.  Friday night will produce a lot of drama!  A really good team in the East will not make the playoffs and there will be some great matchups in the first round.

One question on your analysis of the East: if there is a 3-way tie for 2nd place at 3-2 (Ensworth and BA win), wouldn't BA be #2, since they would have beaten both Ensworth and Baylor?

  8. I've only seen East teams so far this year, but the top 4 teams in the West seem very close to each other - and all very good.  I don't know what to think of the East division - McCallie sits on top, but it seems the next 4 teams all could beat each other on any given night.  A really good team will not make the playoffs.  We'll know a little more about the relative strength of the divisions after Friday, when BA goes to MBA.  MBA already beat Ensworth and looks like they're playing very solid ball.

I'm looking forward to some really good games in the playoffs!

Ahh, yes.  Thanks, Boog, I missed that.  Very well done.

  10. Huge game Thursday night. If Catholic loses, they will drop to 0-3 in division play and be in danger of missing the playoffs. Only the top 4 teams in the 6-team division advance to the playoffs in D2AAA.

BA is banged up and not at full strength. I’m not sure they can go into Knoxville and get a W. Who ya got? And will you be watching on ESPN2?

  11. Big game in D2AAA!! I have no idea how it will turn out. I know McCallie is strong, but I haven’t seen Baylor in person yet. Their new RB is a stud. Wondering if McCallie can force Baylor to beat them some other way. McCallie’s O is really good, but Baylor always has great LBs in their 3-3 defense that fly around and make plays. They’re a really well-coached team. Not sure why, but I’m expecting McCallie to win. Should be an electric atmosphere and a great game.

I just hope there’s a cool hype video by one of the student sections that goes viral.

  12. These are some tough match-ups right out of the gate.

McCallie @ BA - Looking forward to this matchup: a REALLY good McCallie offense against a stout BA defense.  I expect McCallie will have success moving the ball, but I think BA outscores them.

Baylor @ Father Ryan - Both teams are very well-coached.  Baylor in a close one.

Knox Catholic @ Ensworth - Ensworth has surprised me with their scores in the first 2 games.  Their new coach is a great leader and obviously has them believing.  I expect them to squeak by a very talented KC team.

Briarcrest @ JP2 -  No idea.  When was the last time these teams played?  Because of the playoff format in recent years, I don't think they have seen each other in a while.

CBHS @ MUS - No idea.  MUS based on recent history.

St Benedict @ MBA - MBA, simply because they CANNOT go 0-3....  Can they???

On a side  note, what will BA do now that the TSSAA has ruled that any 6th, 7th or 8th grader repeating a year in middle school and still playing ball will be ineligible  as a freshman?  Their old "redshirt" 6th and 7th grade routine just took a hit.

Didn't the rule already include repeating 7th and 8th grade - the only change was to include repeating 6th grade as well?

  14. Congrats to Oakland - totally dominant. “Boring” offense compliments an incredible defense. That offense completely controlled the ball and wore the WH defense down. It may not be sexy, but it’s extremely effective.

I loved WH band. Maybe shouldn’t have played during play, but the drum line was awesome and horn section rocked. Dancers looked great too.

  15. It's really hard to compare across divisions, since there are so few games between divisions.  CPA and Lausanne have been very impressive this year.  No doubt they would be very competitive in D2AAA, but I'm not sure they would be the top 2 teams.  I agree that this poll seems a little off, at least concerning D2AAA:

    MUS beat MBA

    MBA beat McCallie

    McCallie beat BA

So, based on that, MUS should be the highest and BA should be the 4th or 5th ranked D2AAA team (maybe CBHS higher as well?).  But comparing scores, as everyone knows, is fool's gold.  I'm sure nobody really cares where they're ranked 2 weeks before the playoffs.  Tonight's MBA/BA game should be great.
