  1. Been following White County girls for 35 years and think Haley might have been their best coach .. He will be hard to replace . Coachs before him had a lot more talent . He put a lot into it and got better every year . Wish the new coach the best and will support him and the girls .

Come on man! For real? Ole Haley did a pretty good job but they didn't schedule any descent competition!

  2. OleDad...Barrett resigned. Nothing in Barretts file says he was fired. Of course it was on the news. He was a coach at a high profile program. If it was at a school that no one knew about, the story wouldnt have been newsworthy. Why be so angry and judging on a man that got a new job? He paid the price. He will now go build at another school. Let the past go. With RUCO coaches stacking up in Wilson Co, girls basketball may return big time there.

By the way. Yes he was fired, or let's say given the option to resign. Some folks up the ladder forced nolans hand.

  3. The only GIRLS team in TN that is sponsored by Nike for years is Riverdale and it was earned....huge difference. If they have nike on their uniforms they paid for it  Riverdale doesnt.  Only team in Tn that doesnt.

Not so fast warriorfan. The reason Riverdale is sponsored by Nike is because when Insell left Shelbyville he told the Nike rep just to give it to riverdale. Ole Rick needed a strong ally in Ruco so he gave it to them. It only amounts to some free stuff here and there.

Warriorfan, I'm really trying to figure out if your 12 years old or 99.

  4. Glad to see there is a school in the area that takes the emotion out of hiring and isn't afraid of public opinion and wants to win some basketball games. Cory will do great at Lebanon HS.  Good luck Coach Barrett!  :D

"I spent hundreds of hours on the phone talking to people all across the state about Cory because I wanted to make sure this was right," said LHS athletic director Darian Brown.

"After those conversations, it became very clear to me that he's the right person for Lebanon High. Not a single person I talked to had anything negative to say about him."

So, I quess Lebanon AD didn't talk to anyone in Rutherford Co. Since he was fired I assume there must have been something bad to say not to mention it was on the news.

By the way "warrior fan" I've only posted a few times on here, so is it ok to share my opinions. You seem to be pretty biased toward users who don't have a million post. Give me some time and I'll try to catch up.

  5. Am I supposed to know who you are? Pretty sure your real name isn't warrior fan, or maybe it is.I have one account and its a first and are you only allowed to talk if you've had an account for a long time? I really am not so bored that I have to be on here constantly like you are. I got an account because I wanted to respond to people like you. I mean, you maybe the only person in America that thought the "throwing of the game" incident was perfectly ok.

It's great you support your school but please don't sit back and act like that your school is the standard for character. Two huge TSSAA violations over the past few years! And that's just what they got caught at. Also, your coach that quit after 2 weeks wasn't just based on what you saw in media.

Also, I have no ill will toward Barrett, I think he's probably a pretty good coach. I just think it's funny how you put things on here that make no sense. Like for example that he's a "great program builder." Where does that come from? What program did he build? He Sure didn't build Riverdales. Hickman CO.? Really? Why don't you just say you think he's a good coach and quit building up some kind of false resume. Just dip your chip once and be done with it! This stuff really gets under your skin doesn't it?

  6. Agree.  The biggest thing I believe though is the bad publicity will subside the minute Coach Barrett takes a program, starts coaching, and folks in the community and school see what he is about and get behind him.  His contacts with college coaches across the country are phenomenal.  He knows how to get college coaches in the door to showcase talent for scholarships, and knows how to build programs.  Again, under Cory, every kid at Riverdale but one has gone on to play in college, and the kid that chose not to play two seasons ago had juco offers.  Another had a golf scholarship.  Scholarships even went to kids who were deep in rotation and seldom played.  He is that good and dedicated to helping his kids get to the next level.  Fans quickly forgive and forget when their team wins a district championship and is a state contender.   Some school will pick up a major asset to their program.  I put my bottom dollar on it the same coaching mistake will not be made twice.  To me, he knows he is watched and scrutinized, and will be a safe hire. He is a great person outside of coaching as well.  I wish him the best.

  7. Smyrna hires coach who also out lost them. Smyrna I quess has been out coached twice in last few years. Riverdale out loses them this year and Wilson Central out lost them a few years back. I quess they needed a coach that could throw a game better!

Like the other post said, "oh the irony"!

This hiring to me is a bigger story than the whole incident involving Riverdale & Smyrna. No ill will toward anyone but this makes absolutely no sense!

  8. I am spilling this so u understand how this works. It is painful when folks make assumptions and think kids are recruited bc they r good. Kids arent. My kid played Flight Silver last year and played at Riverdale. She also is committed to play ball in college when she graduates in 2016. She has been on the Bolus list since a freshman...Riverdale wasnt in the picture at the time so it isnt bc of Riverdale. She has started 65 games in her high school career including 35 games at Riverdale. She is not a superstar....just a consistent 10 ppg scorer. Although she was All-District as a freshman, I can assure you that my kid was never "recruited" to Riverdale. Other kids there were not "recruited" either. I sought out Riverdale. If you asked if I moved for my kid, the answer is yes. I wanted her to have a unique HS experience that few get to have. It was a sacrifice. When we made the decision to move, Cory wouldn't even return my call because he was very receptive that the program is under scrutiny. I had to go through the front office and register just like every other parent. We physically moved here after her freshman year in WILCO.

Is Flight frustrating for parents in the program? Yes. My kid rarely started and definitely didn't play as much as I would have liked bc quite frankly, there are lots of good players that make up that team from many schools. I had to deal with it as a parent, but in the end, it made my kid a stronger person mentally, and improved her game in high school. My kid rarely trains with Flight folks, and it isn't a requirement to play for Riverdale to play on Flight. The men do their best with the kids to help them.

Good for you and I hope the best for you guys.

Didn't say they all were recruited but know for a fact who was. Funny you say they were under scrutiny! Wonder why? Trust me! The throw the game incident wasn't the whole reason for the

dismissal..and it was a dismissal! I would defend it too if my daughter was there.

I can say that any coach or parent that could sit and watch the Riv/Smy game and think that was ok, I seriously question their ethics! I hope that incident also made her stronger mentally.

I sure you did what you think was best for your daughter and hopefully all will work out.

My point is that some people need to put it all in perspective. What's really important? You do realize this is the second major violation by Riverdale girls bball in the last few years? Everyone wants to gravitate to a winning program! Remember that sometimes there is a reason why some programs are winning! Good luck!

  9. In a past post you said you got your daughter out of Riverdale's program bc you didn't like what was going on...what exactly was going on?  Did she not get playing time?  just interested if your daughter just quit playing high school basketball or if you transferred her.

Cory Barrett is still a great coach.  He will land on his feet and do fine.

"Be careful how you judge people. You don't sum up a man's life in one moment." Al Pacino (in "City Hall")

I actually think Cory is a pretty good guy. The problem is what he got himself caught up in. If I were coaching I don't think winning would be my sole ambition and I certainly would not put it in front integrity, character, sportsmanship etc. I would never recruit players. I would rather lose with integrity then when win with out of zone players, etc. I would want to sleep at night.

I can also say, that whoever riverdale hires they will hitch their wagon to the same mule! You will never be able to justify it to me.

To answer your question. She played for flight and I know what goes on!

  10. What is so Shady about an organization that allows kids freshman and up to participate for free? What is so shady about a person that has the ability to make kids better and have them prepared to play as freshman when they enter college? What is so shady about a coach that walks into a game high school or college, sits by himself and children and parents come to sit and talk to him. Do you even know these people whose character you question. What crimes have he or they committed against humanity? You take the stories of a few disgruntled parents over the many who are satisfied.

It's shady when they are playing for free on somebody else's dime! Don't get me wrong, I understand players wanting to get better and I'm sure these coaches are helping them. The problem is when these so called clubs etc. hitch their wagon to a particular school. For what reason? To give them a facility to practice, to do lessons, and to recruit for that particular school (coach). Think about the two last schools that they were associated with? Just so happens they got kicked out of tourament. Ironic, uh!

You can go ahead and try to justify there actions by saying they are helping kids etc. , but bottom line is they are shady and have an agenda.

I quess you could say that Syracuse didn't commit any crimes against society. They helped kids get an education or get players to nba etc. have you ever thought about who gets hurt in that similar situation. What about other college coaches who may lose their job because they didn't win enough? They lost games to them or lost out on players to them! Because this university was cheating! Go ahead and say that these other schools need to work harder! Come on man! Wrong is wrong! As the saying goes, " those who follow the speed limit are the ones that arrive last ". Some are benefiting, some are losing out. If it was legal then no argument, but it's not! This organization could do things legal and create a positive culture and could benefit an entire community. But, they choose not to.

  11. Fact of the matter is a lot of people are commenting on something that they really don't know the entire truth about! Yes you may hear bits and pieces, but not all of the facts!  AAU/Exposure is not just here in Murfreesboro!  Go to a tournament and you'll see well over 400 teams playing, from across the USA, therefore it must be others that feel this is a benefit.

My daughter did play for the program that you guys are trying to dog out and we went to them, they did not come to us, but I'm smart enough to know where I felt she would get the best training(IMO), of course there are several alternatives, but this is the one we chose, so you can't hide behind a computer and be negative on decisions that others make!  IMO it was a great decision, my wife and I are not having to pay college tuition.  Yes, she has some ability, but the training and coaching she rec'd pushed her to the next level.

As for me, I'm thankful for the program and the coaches and in turn will give my time to help other families reach there goals.  Bottom line is you can't believe everything you hear.

Trust me when I say this. I know. I know first hand, I've experienced it. Good for you that you had a great experience. I can tell you that you don't have to use this shady organization for your child to get a scholarship. I know tons of players that have gotten scholarships just on their hs playing alone. I also know parents who thought their daughter had to go D1 and chose terrible D1 programs over lower level great programs. Not really sure if that is about the child or the parent? You tell me?

I will say this in closing. Im sure many players have been helped by your program and I guess you have as well. I'm saying that you don't need it. There are some good character coaches, AAU programs & high school programs that are not in it for the money or the recruitment to their HS teams.

In the end the most important thing is the life lessons! I know the system inside and out! I'm not hiding behind a computer but just stating facts. I want to give a shout out to those coaches that are doing it the right way.

I know what I would want my daughter experiencing!

  12. Two things for parents to think about.

One is, don't think that one particular AAU program is your only ticket. You need to think about the character of some of those coaches. Only accepting cash for lessons, keeping players on team that aren't good enough just to keep getting that money that not only pads their pockets but also supports some players that don't pay anything.

Also, keep in mind, why would a high school coach spend his only time off coaching other hs players. Why would they do that? One reason and one reason only. To try and build relationships with these kids and recruit them. Doesn't make sense to help get players from other schools better just for the heck of it. Come on man! Also, parents do you enjoy having your kids play all spring only to get them bumped by another player that the coach decides to pick up in the summer. No loyalty in this.

AAU basketball is so corrupt its astonishing!

Two, who do you want your kiids to play for in high school. Coaches that do it the right way or the corrupt way. Think about this. If a coach tries to recruit your child in any way is corrupt! You may love the fact and relish in the fact that someone is wanting your kid. I'm sure it feels good and parents just laugh and think this is perfectly ok. But stop and think about it! It's illegal and the coach knows it's illegal but they will do anything to win. Of course coaches want good players, but you may want to consider the ones who do it the right way. If you want your daughter spending 4 years of her life in that type of culture then go for it. Trust me, if they illegally recruit them they will do almost anything to win. Ask the riverdale/Smyrna parents, I'm sure they enjoyed getting kicked out of tournament. Just stop and think about that! They got kicked out of a tournament! Was it worth it?? Sports are about competition, fair play and also many important life lessons. Is this being taught? Many of these kids at these two schools arrived via recruitment., and wonder what they think now. Guarantee they would try to justify it!

Throwing a game is not a lapse of judgement but a calculated way to win at all cost. Something like that just doesn't come out of nowhere. Recruiting, throwing games, out of zone players, etc. it is what it is. I'm not bashing parents but just wondering if they really have thought about what's really important. After all, it's just a game!

I have no dog in this hunt and have no ill will toward any school. However, I do know there are a lot of programs doing things the right way and many the wrong way. Tssaa cant police all the illegal activity but parents can by making wise choices.

Good luck with your child's Future life lessons!

  13. who?

Nope they are not the only ones, but that is the environment that has been allowed to be created in the Boro. Its kinda funny that this all really seemed to take off when MTSU hired a new coach several years ago. I think that there is a lot of influence from him for all of this to take place. I know his one of his sons has a big hand in it, so it would only make sense that daddy does too!

You are exactly right! Funny, right after the whole throw the game incident, daddy really distanced himself from that. Wouldn't even let him sit in his usual seat at State Tourn.

Some principals are more concerned about winning than image. Really sad! It's also sad that the parents etc. think that everything there is the same as everywhere else.

I did hear that the powers to be are getting a little tired of all the corruption there! We will see.

  14. not sure Nolan has a choice and Nolan has a lot of say so in the county..but not in this case

Well, im sure they will get someone that can keep the flight train rolling. Nice little set up over there.

Most of their success is tainted and they seem to be proud of that fact! It's time for administrators to clean this program up.

  15. Not every student athlete cares solely about playing time. I can assure you that every player for Oakland embraces the concept of team first, because that is the way it has always been under Grand staff. Playing time is earned, not given just because a player is home grown. If that's the case, let's just give everyone participation medals and not have a postseason

Oakland made it to the sectionals with none of those girls, all "home grown" talent. Only 2 of these girls even make a contribution. These transfers stem from the resignation of a coach from LCA, everything was done above board. White County in Oakland's position so get off your moral high horse and quit making excuses before the game is even played. I can see Oakland's time away from playing Sparta hasnt made them any less bitter towards boro schools

    Nope! Not above board!
  16. With ease?? Obviously you don't keep up with girls high school basketball. This is a very talented team from Oakland. They have played a tuff schedule. They have good athletes and are well coached. On the other hand, we too are a very talented team, well coached, and play with more heart than any team that I have seen in a long time. There is no doubt this is going to be the game to watch in Tennessee Monday night. We do have a ace in the hole. Were at home with what I would say is one of the best fan bases in the state. Prediction; Warriorettes by 2 in a thriller.  Go get 'em girls!!!

Oakland will win by 20 and they will have about 20 fans!

  17. It's good to see Cannon winning again. Coach Rigsby has done a good job and has been winning consistently just like they did in late 90's. if I recall they had a good run during that span? Is Rigsby from Cannon and did he play then?

    Good luck in Sub-State.

  18. Still think you are piling on Oledad. Got you a new coacht membership, just to pile on. If schools or coaches are playing out of zone players illegally, then the school hurt by this activity should report them to the TSSAA. If coaches are using undue influence to recruit players, the same. And I don't think you are qualified to tell me what I don't see or for that matter what I can see.

Trust me when I say I know. A lot of this does get turned in but it's really hard to prove. Know for fact out of zone player was turned in to co. Not only did county not make her go to zoned school but also their was no consequence for coach. Even though some other Rutherford co schools had to send the player back. I know! And I am qualified to tell you that you don't see it because you probably have no idea what I'm referring to.

  19. Now you are piling on. See how easy it is.

What you and some fail to see is that the schools that follow the rules are the ones that are being punished. They are not playing out of zone kids nor recruiting them and hence can't keep up with the joneses! Uneven playing field. The slap on the wrist is the typical punishment. High School sports should not be ever about recruiting players, period. Some schools like the one discussed really think they are doing nothing wrong when they have those discussions with parents, etc. Its really amazing.

  20. Piling on, an old time football term, was a fifteen yard penalty. Officials should call piling on against Rutherford County school administrators. They are all just piling on. Their offices should be moved back fifteen yards, so they can get a broader view.

    Really!

2nd time Riverdale girls basketball has embarrassed the county. Made news then too. Riverdale should have 2 yrs of postseason ban, and no summer camps.

  21. And let's not forget the fact that the RCS director basically just told the whole world that Tom Nolan is a weak administrator, and he has to handle his discipline for him. Two game suspension, eh, Tom? Well, we'll just see about that. Powell, on the other hand, didn't need Odom to discipline Middleton, because Middleton was never going to coach another game at Smyrna anyway. The suspension for Middleton only means he can't coach anywhere else in the county for a year. He was never going to be back at Smyrna anyway.

How much will Barrett be supervised in the coming year? We'll see if Tom Nolan is willing to lose his job over his girls' basketball coach.

I would say Nolan is about to retire anyway.

I would hate to be an admistrator who has to tell his parents and players that we are going to have change with a new coach and then change again. Silly!

  22. It will be enforced, because this came from the superintendent and not the principal. If Riverdale doesn't enforce this than more than the coach will be in hot water. It ha been shown over the last couple of weeks no matter how successful a coach you are in Rutherford County off you step out of line they will get rid of you.

    Depends on the principal.

Has anyone stopped to think about this? This is the 2ND OFFENSE by Riverdale in last few years! You would think TSSAA Would have taken that into account! Do you know of any other school much less program that has this track record??
