  1. Yep both teams looked pretty good for a first scrimmage. Lots of speed on the field for both teams.

I thought the Alcoa defense played real good for as many players they lost from last season. The offense looked a little out of sink at first. Plus, the starting QB Myers got hurt playing defense and never threw the ball well. QB Russell took over for the first team. Kind of silly to put a senior QB on 1st team kick off AND start in the 1st team defensive secondary. Alcoa's freshman was moving the ball well at the end as the scrimmage was called for lighting. Had they got their full offensive series like West, IMO, they would has scored in a few more plays to the even the freshman team scores at 1 each.

Special teams...especially the kicking and field goal units looks the best I have ever seen at Alcoa. 40 yards and in Money!! Kick offs.....through the back of the end zone. Punts brought rain.

I was also somewhat confused to see some Maryville players at the Alcoa scrimmage in street clothes ?? Somethings up!?

I agree.  Alcoa's kicking really impressed me.  They put on a clinic in that regard.  West as lots of work to do in that area.  I thought Alcoa looked big on the "O" line.  The way I see it, Alcoa is Alcoa and Maryville is Maryville.  Both of those teams set the bar pretty high for the rest of the state, IMHO.  I was proud of West being able to play with Alcoa like they did.  Last year Alcoa cleaned West's clock.  We don't see Alcoa or Maryville in the regular season so scrimmages are the only way to get that kind of exposure.  I look for Alcoa to have another strong year after they get all the kinks worked out.

  2. Knox West at Mo West.  Knox West 5 TD's and 1 FG.  Mo West 1 TD.  West had their way pretty much the whole game.  Varsity portion was West 21 - 0.  The Rebels played without starting rising senior QB who was injured earlier in the week.  He's out a few weeks.  West is going to be very strong this coming season.

  3. I doubt anyone shows up!  90% chance of heavy storms with some severe with high winds predicted during the game.  Other counties used some common sense and moved Friday's games to Thursday but never Knox County!

The hurricanes are the least of our worries.

  4. Might as well start this one off.  West has a pretty stout defense but they will be tested to the max in this game.  The offense sputters around like my dads old buick with a blown head gasket.  If both the defense and offense show up at the same time and play 4 full quarters then West might win 17 - 14 but the way West has been playing of late my confidence is pretty low.  If West brings the sputtering game this Friday, Fulton could win 34 - 17 or worse.  We will see on Friday.......

    Go Rebels!

  5. I took my kids to West for the education - see we have something in common. Does Farragut have the IB Program? It's kind of fun to have a VERY strong academic institution that can also play Football. You'll have your chance to roll us up come baseball season.

And no the Air Force kid was an outside linebacker. We run a 3-4 and I'm pretty sure most of the o and d line returned this year pretty well intact. Even if you win the second time around, we would just be even for the season at 1-1 - I call that a tie.

The defense keeps getting better and better.  The great thing is most of the D is back again next year too!  The freshman class that beat the Maryville freshman are now juniors.  Did you know that #76, our "all state" player on the OL, played injured in the Farragut Game?  He has a high ankle spraine.  He gutted it out against Farragut. Great effort!

The OL does the best they can do given all the injurys.  No question that they are missing the burners from last year but they have adapted and are doing what they can with what they have.  When the OL sputters, the D keeps them in the came.  I'm proud of our guys!

  6. West 42 Powell 13.  Powell was never in the game.  Davenport did little against West.  He had a key fumble early in the game.  West defense dominated again.  Its the second and 3rd string that is allowing opponents to put any points on the board.

  7. To say that West is down this year isn't totally accurate.  For sure they lost the rediculous speed at QB and RB along with other great players.  No denying that!  But the talent just keeps coming in and existing talent is getting better.  They have a massive freshman that got some playing time against Halls.  Imagine a 14 year old kid weighing 336 pounds and still growing!  "Juice" was double and tripple teamed by Halls and he still pushed them back!  He is just scary!  West is starting to clicking on all cylindars and if they can keep making progress, they will be hard to beat.  I see Farragut and Fulton as big tests.  They should dispatch Carter on Friday.

  8. This should be a good game.  Bearden seems to have improved over last year.  HVA has a very strong defense but lost their QB to injury.  West had a hard time with HVA's defense.  HVA is a much bettter team than most people realize.  Bearden with have to watch the turnovers and move the ball against that tough defense to win.  Being a Bearden alum, I have to pull for the bulldogs but HVA may win this one.  I'm thinking HVA wins 21 - 14.

  9. West and Fulton will be a great game but I believe West will get that game. I also think Fulton is gonna get throttled this week against Maryville.

I totally agree!  Maryville will clean Fulton's clock.  West showed brief flashes of greatness last night.  The QB threw for over 300 yards and 4 TD's.  West needs to put it all together for 4 quarters.  If they do that, they will be hard to beat the rest of the season.  With all the hype about the SC QB, I expected more out of him.  The bright spot for SC was the field goal kicker!  That dude can kick!

  10. One thing for sure, West looked like the better team tonight.    They forced SC to kick a 47 yard FG to win.  West still is fine tuning things but they showed much improvement tonight.  People were saying West was going to get blown out.  No way no how!  I just hope we play SC in the playoffs. Go West!

  11. I thought I read somewhere that you guys have a stud nose on defense is he out? I thought maybe he was #55 but he wasn't as dominate as this guy sounded.

    GB

I think they were referring to #55, Tyler.  He plays with a lot of heart and is fearless.  I just think the guys were a little flat against HVA.  They should show some improvement against SCHS.

  12. If West can get #54 healthy and back playing defense, things will look a lot better. He is getting close.  Mobley saw limited action on offense in the HVA game and needs further conditioning after being sidlined in Feb with a knee injury.  With those 2 big guys back healthy, look out!

  13. Originally there weren't going to be game football, baseball, or softball fields/stadiums at HVA.  They were going to "share" facilities with other schools.  It was at the last minute that money was budgeted to build basic facilities.  The folks at HVA have done a good job trying to make improvements, but as the saying goes you can't make chicken salad out of ..........

HVA's football stadium is what it is and it's not the most spectator friendly, but at least they have one of their own, which wasn't in the original plans.

I didn't realize that!  Thanks for the info!  On the plus side the concessions area is nice and I liked the football spirit and atmosphere displayed at HV.  It's hard to imagin a High School without a sports program, especially football.

  14. Hardin Valley's stadium is badly engineered from the visitor perspective.  The visitor bleachers do not have near enough "rise" to get any kind of angle on the game.  Combine that with the distance to the field and you end up not seeing half the field.  I sat on the back row and no way could I see the action near the hash marks.  You need battleship binoculars to see the game but still miss about 25% of the field.  You would think that a new school would display some of the latest ideas in stadiums but not in Knox County.

  15. WRP, I haven't heard anything from the Owls about this, but I'd be very interested in hearing what comes of it. Even if it isn't us, I'd love to know who, where, and when.

I can answer one of your questions now.  The scrimmage date is Friday, July 31st.  I don't know a time yet but most of our scrimmages have been at 5 or 6pm.  The teams tossed around are Ooltewah, East Hamilton and Walker Valley.  I think I heard its a road game for West.

  16. How is Knox West looking so far?

West lost a lot of their speed from last year.  They bring back some great players though.  The QB is a student of the game and has good size.  There were holes to fill and so far players are stepping up.  The new coach is great!  The players have done a good job of adapting to the new coach and spread offense.  Overall it's still a work in progress but they are improving daily.  We scrimmage Alcoa on August 7th.  That will ge a good test.
