1. People put way too much emphasis on height. If he's 6'10" and can't play a solid post game then he is a disappointment in my eyes. Like t-mac says, the most important thing is heart. Even if the coaching staff does nothing, if the guy has enough heart and dedication to practice his game and take it to that next level then he will get there. All high school coaches can really do is make an attempt to put the right pieces in the right spot, but it's up to the kids to determine their own level of ability.

  2. I'm a completely neutral party in this and my prayers go out to Merrisa Williams, but there are many lessons to be learned from this. I personally have conflicting viewpoints about this.

First off you really aren't supposed to bring personal battles onto the court, but I do realize that these girls are young and probably aren't mentally prepared to do that. For many of them it's probably their first experience with the 'pain of loss' but it's a fact of life we all have to face.

Secondly basketball is a competition. Whether you win by 40 or 1, it's just an 'L'. Honestly if I was a freshman looking to improve my position on a team, I would have played to the best of my ability. Their are no friends or enemies on the court, all that exists is the game. I really can't say you should shave points for any reason, but I know everyone doesn't feel the way I do.

  3. Mental toughness is one thing that you can't really 'teach'. It has everything to do with a person's surroundings and upbringing, but you can't really make a person be mentally strong it's something they have to do for themselves. If you put a person through enough situations though it's one of those things that just gets developed over time. Parents can definitely hurt it though by spoiling kids, and coaches can hurt players by giving them too many breaks. I think that the best way to develop it would be to treat everyone as equals and go from there. The Star player and the Bench player get punished equally for doing the same mistakes.

  4. No offense to Coach Burt, but I was always frown upon the COY going to a coach who's team was expected to win their district/region. I mean nobody was going to beat out Riverdale, although Cookeville game them a run for their money. Not to discredit Jennifer, but Oakland went downhill late in the season and really, their good start was aided by a soft schedule. To me, I was more impressed with Mindy Odom and Darren Brown, they both did tremendous jobs with their teams. I think we all expected Cookeville to be in the top 4 or so, but I dont think many people expected the Lady Cavs to go 12-2 and force Riverdale to win their district finale to assure themselves of an outright title, I think you can make an argument for Odom being the best coach in 7-AAA. Darren Brown deserves a heap of praise for what he did with Lebanon. Yeah they finished 5th, but they came oh so close in alot of those games, they could very well by 3rd or 4th instead of 5th, no team improved more than Lebanon

Oakland was aided by a soft schedule early on, but their breakdown late in the season was due to most of the team's inexperience and lack of determination. Every game each team played their toughest defense on TD, and left the majority of everyone else with many offensive opportunities. Throughout the season they never really developed or adjusted to any defensive situation that was thrown at them. I was amazed that TD was able to score every night like she was, because it was evident as the season dragged on that she was just dog tired. I know for a fact that she never really ran full speed for a majority of the game. Then they also let games go in the fourth quarter. I didn't think that Oakland was going to go far, but always hoped that they'd pull it out. Hopefully, the youth that they had this year will PRACTICE outside of what is required by the coach and develop their skills, because next year they will be needing it.

well to everyones surprise Anne Marie won it i couldnt believe that when i read it in the paper!!!! i wonder how close the voting was does anyone know what the coaches thought how many first place votes she got?

    I wasn't surprised.

No matter what........Oakland girls have sure made me proud. They are fighters and never give up.

I'm proud of what Oakland has done this year, and I hope they win this game. I also hope that Oakland is able to find a win to play well through all 4 qtrs. Oakland is always able to play a great 3 qtrs. but always has a few keys mistakes in the 4th to give the other team an opportunity to win. If they keep down on the 4th quarter mistakes and sloppiness I take them for the win in this one.

Look out , you know it's coming. My same old one track mind. A good high school coach only keeps kids on the team that he or she can play. There are certain smart things you can do to please most, maybe not all. First, in high school, respect your upperclassman, remember what I said, the coach allows them to remain on the team. Second, find places you can insert players without hurting , but giving your starters a blow, like the very end of quarters 1,2,3. And Third, when the game is trully out of hand, put in your young ones so they can see what varsity is like. Give your young ones alot of time and coaching on Freshman and JV games. And don't bring your young ones up too early, make it a big deal, an honor . I know it seems like we want our kids to grow up so quick. What ever happen to "waiting your turn".

Sometimes people get way too caught up with giving respect based on age more so than hard work and dedication. You should respect your upperclassmen, but you can't ignore hard work and talent. If a freshman or sophomore is better than a junior or senior, what is wrong with giving them substantial playtime? It doesn't make sense that they should have to sit because of a mere 1 year difference in age, or merely grade classification in some cases.

    QUOTE(stlbrd @ Feb 2 2007 - 12:21 AM) 826355501

Whatever happened to "the best five play", regardless if they are "upperclassmen" or not. Is it disrespecting to the "upperclassmen" if they are the one's coming off of the bench to give a freshman who started a rest? Once again, your mindset always tells you that the "young ones" are the ones on the bench at the end of the game. I can only hope that you are not a coach.

Just to add an extension, the best players should play. Though if you have an abundance of talent then give the heads up to the "upperclassmen." Like STL said, whoever said older meant better?

To answer the original question. It all depends on if you want a dynasty or a winning season. If you want to continue to have multiple years of success then you must use your bench. Some of the things people learn in sports only come from experience. If you ignore the younger players, then eventually you will have to make it up later down the road, but by then it could be too late.

  8. What kind of snow did Cookeville get?

Cookeville doesn't look too bad right now. They had the roads salted down days ago and most of the city streets are still drivable (by me at least) and shouldn't pose too many problems. Though I don't know about the condition of the back roads. The roads in the Boro were much worse.

  9. QUOTE(riverdaleman @ Feb 1 2007 - 06:02 PM) 826354959

I have known AML for a while i had her sister in class (older) when i used to subb so i have been watching her around our gym since shew as a 7th grader and have talked to her after almost every game i have attended and i HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR FROM HER she always smiles gives me a hug and asked how im doing after i tell her good game no matter if we win or lose and not once has she acted concieted or acted like basketball revolves around her She works very hard at what she does just like TD does you dont get as good as AML is without hard work

Now about the heads up between TD and AML and the person complaining about the refs i think they forgot that AML had 4 fouls with 6 minutes to go in the 3rd qtr AND PLAYED THE REST OF THE WAY WITH OUT GETTING another foul called she had to play off and could not go after a steal or anything so i dont think you can mention the refferee I dont know who won the "heads up"battle nor do i care but i will say this...Anne Marie is the best girl player i have seen in a long time in basketball she just has IT on the court she sees the court real well she can penetrate and pull up and shoot she can take it to the whole she can shoot from outside and she can kick the ball out to the open shooter

soph I DONT CARE ABOUT LAST YEAR OR THE PAST TEAMS the award is for THIS year and the MVP in district 7AAA is Anne Marie Lanning and i think the coaches (the ones who vote for this award) will show you by a landslide that i am right

I really don't think I FORGOT anything, nor was I COMPLAINING. I simply made a STATEMENT about TD playing the defense that she that was necessary to stay out of foul trouble. I remember AML getting into foul trouble on a BAD DECISION on HER part. You play against the refs EVERYTIME you hit the hardwood and it's a VARIABLE you have no control over. KUDOS to AML for not having another foul, that was a dumb move on Oakland's part.

The POINT that soph is trying to make is that the MVP doesn't necessarily go to the BEST player on the BEST team. Oakland completely DOMINATED the district that year having only a few close games, but AML won the MVP that season. If you even compare the two teams and two seasons Oakland and Riverdale have just switched positions. So if the coaches use the same LOGIC they did that season then why is it so hard to believe that SOMEONE BESIDES AML is even CAPABLE of winning the MVP. Though like every other award in existence, it is all about a NAME and AML has the NAME.

I am not even trying to take anything away from her, because she has talent. Though sometimes people can't see the forest for the trees.

  10. QUOTE(tdntn @ Jan 31 2007 - 12:09 AM) 826352687

TJ, did you not see them play head to head? AML was beating TD's defense every trip down the court. AML scored more points than TD (who played every minute) despite the fact that she played almost an entire quarter less. AML left the game initially with riverdale having the lead and oakland immediately went on a 9-0 run to take the lead. AML came back out and helped her team bite at the lead the rest of the night and she made the shots at the end to put riverdale back in the drivers seat

you guys talk about how this isnt a career award, its not about last year and what not, but yall keep talking about how awful oakland was last year...what does that matter oakland has one of the better girls programs in the state who didnt expect them to bounce back.

moving to a bigger picture here, i think both girls have a chance of being ms. basketball finalists (and theres only 3 of them). it would be so great to see them both but if atleast one of them isnt a finalist TSSAA would be doing district 7 a severe injustice i believe

I don't agree that she was beating TD's defense every time down the court. The refs stopped both teams from playing any really aggressive or consistent defense. AML beat TD's defense when TD was trying to stay out of foul trouble, I'll give you that.

The fact that AML had more points is no surprise, because the girl is a scorer. I haven't studied her career thoroughly, but I know personally that TD has held back from scoring in recent years to get her team involved. If TD had to sacrifice half her points to win the game she'd do just that. This is the first season TD has had to force herself to score big points just for her team to stay in contention of winning the game.

The fact that Oakland was horrible last year also has a lot to say about the matter. Oakland won five games without TD, but with the addition of her has been able to pull off a winning season despite being the underdog. Without AML Riverdale is still a winning team. The point here is Riverdale has consistent help each night, but with Oakland you never know who is going to show up or to what extent. When you only have to defend against 1 offensive threat it makes it easy to defend against a team.

  11. With as young as Oakland has been in the last few years, I have been careful in my opinion of how they play, but I was extremely disappointed last night, Oakland went 8 minutes without a point in the 2nd half and almost 10 minutes without a basket.

Oakland did all the little things well in the first half and the very parts of the 2nd half and that resulted in a 32-21 lead. But from that point on, it was almost like Oakland went back to the team of last year that played intimidated and did not think about making smart decisions with the basketball. Cookeville is a good program and it is tough to win at their place, but Oakland should have won that game last night and ill defy anyone who thinks otherwise. But its back to the drawing board, seeing Lebanon almost go toe to toe with Riverdale gives me some measure of hope that Oakland can give Riverdale a good scare friday night

Good post. When the game score was posted, I thought the same thing but I didn't see it. I wiil comment on this very quickly and admit I do not know what happened. Do you think that losing the number of games in a row had an effect on the younger players and gave Cookeville the chance to concentrate on your scorers? That is my last comment on the subject but as usual would be interested in your response. RD/Oakland will be a good match.

I don't feel that losing a number of games had any effect. After last season, they should be used to losing a number of games. Now that they've had a number of victories this season they should be playing their heart out to win. Every team will focus on Oakland's scorers because they know who they have to stop each game, that comes as no surprise to any of Oakland's opponents. I really don't think that Oakland's scoring is the problem though. Their defense has holes and turnovers at inappropriate times kills them.

I dont think the players get caught in the W-L column as much as the fans do. Cookeville did play better defense, but Oakland helped them out by settling for jumpers and missing some gimme layups. Cookeville played better, but up 11 with 6 minutes to go in the third should be a lead that a good team can hold. Maybe if this happened against MJ or Riverdale, I would be a little bit more forgiving, but thats not the case

All good posts and I agree with Grad. Oakland can play a good 2 or 3 Quarters of basketball every night, but that really isn't always going to get you a win. Early in the year it looked like Oakland was hungry and willing to fight for a win and now at times it seems like they just give up by settling for jump shots and trying to force things. After the Mt. Juliet game I haven't seen Oakland play a consistent set of games yet, and it seems like each night there is a new team on the court. I think there has been a lot of shuffling in the line up to try and find that other player that they need.

The biggest thing that aggrivates me is that Oakland's defense has too many wholes. At some points in the game they allow three pointers and defend the post well, but then some points defend the perimeter well and allow post players to dominate. It just seems to me that they drag their feet on defense too much. Most of their players have been playing long enough to recognize what kind of threat each player poses, but I don't think that they are able to put it all together.

If Oakland finds the heart that they had earlier this season, then they should be a formidable team. At this point however, they are in need of some soul searching.

  12. Really a good post. Just to examine Lavergne a little more, while they may not have shot the three against the team from Oakland, they do have three players that can do it and one, quite a way out, Yarboro. After playing them, and realizing the quality of the young players on this team, all of the things you have mentioned showed up against Siegel. The counter moves that Coach Bush and staff made to slow down, not stop, Jefferson, Terrell and Yarboro, now looking back, was only able to have been done by a team that had the seasoned players that Siegel had who in three/four years had played as many defenses as it had.

Lavergne really has a great team but is not team oriented and tries to go one on one too much and has the players, if disciplined on offense and stay together, to really do good in upcoming years. You will hear those names and more.

You are being too critical with your team, Oakland.

I probably am a little tough when it comes to my critiques of Oakland. It's just that I can't stand to see poor defense being played. In the two games Oakland lost, they were beat the same way both times, with little to no defense on drives and back door cuts. Plus I must vent my frustrations somewhere, and to critique my own is always better than demeaning another teams victory in a well played game.

I wasn't able to see a lot of Oakland's earlier games, so I really can't say it's been happening all season, but maybe they have just been too relaxed lately.

  13. Quik, I really look forward to your posts. They are very informative, and well-written. Thanks for providing such a nice insight on the OHS girls.

    Thanks. Your compliment is appreciated.

Tough loss tonight for the Lady Pats, LaVergne is a very talented team no doubt, but its a team Oakland should have beat. Oakland looked like they were sleep walking for most of the game, but some of that credit should go to LaVergne. A game like this just goes to show you that if you dont bring it every night, you are going to put yourself in a position to lose ballgames.

Oakland did make a game of it late, but had they displayed the intensity/effort that they showed in the first 9 games, that would have been an issue, dribble penetration absolutely killed Oakland tonight. Congrats to former Oakland assistant Keith Dean

I really think that Oakland beat themselves tonight. TD took a trip to Alaska in the first quarter, and it was obvious she was going to have an off night. Sara King was slowed down by her defender and was not able to have her way tonight. Lavergne got the jump on Oakland early and never let down. Though Lavergne is a good team, they can not shoot from beyond 15 ft. Most if not all of Lavergne's points were scored within a 15 ft. radius of the basket. Oakland has good perimeter defense, but they struggle to defend in the post and against backdoor cuts. At times it seemed that players would just stand around or were just too slow to react to what was happening. Grad is also correct in stating that penetration killed them. It seems that when people drive to the basket all they have to do is get by their defender, since people down low can't or won't react to the ball carrier. I said before that Oakland needed to have a consistent 3rd offensive option, but it looks like they have to tighten up on their defensive awareness side of the ball first.

  14. Quik, I had to ask these questions to get the information to just get an idea of what happened. You gave one of the best analysis, however distressful, that I have seen a partison give. It was factual and let the reader understand ,however he or she wanted oakland to win, the feelings and the strategy of the players and what they were up against as the game went on. It remained vivid, knowing that they gave it all and at the end it was not just letting MJ players score but KM and TD had played out all of their options and hoped MJ would miss some of those chippies. This had to be one great game and a tribute to the effort given but why would you not expect it to be that way?

I was really expecting Oakland to pull an upset and it did look that way for almost 3 quarters. When I give my opinion of a game I try to give an unbiased look from all angles if I can, but I'm not perfect and may miss a lot of things behind the scenes. The only thing that had me concerned before the game was maybe Oakland might come out nervous or too excited , and make a couple of little mistakes that could have killed them early. Some of their players probably haven't been in a real pressured situation and might not understand how to handle losing a lead late in the game. They never gave up though and I was very happy to see that.

At first I thought Oakland's defense was not doing a good job of helping off on drives to the basket, but as the game went on I began to believe that they had made a conscious decision not to help on drivers, except to jab at them, in order to avoid giving up 3's. It looked bad from the stands, but I believe it was a pretty decent strategy that worked fairly well in frustrating MJ from getting their open 3's on the drive and kick and MJ did in fact blow some of those opportunities on drives to the basket. If you check out MJ's scores you'll see that 66 points is the lowest point total that MJ has had since the opening weekend of the season. Prior to this game they had scored 71 or more in 8 consecutive games and had been over 80 5 times during that stretch, so I think 66 points looks pretty good when you take that into consideration. Coach Grandstaff is a very good defensive coach and I don't believe her girls would be that consistently slow to help off unless it was part of the game plan. I could be wrong, but you would have to ask her or someone on their coaching staff to know for sure. <_<

I thought it was a great defensive effort. In my opinion though, it is better to give up a contested 3 than an uncontested layup, just because the 3 pointer is a lot more difficult to shoot and nobody at this level is perfect. MJ probably had missed a couple of opportunities close, but I just thought they had too many. I just know instinctively I wouldn't be able to let someone drive through the lane without me stepping out on them. It would drive me crazy.

  15. thats exactly my thoughts. Who got themselves in foul trouble? Was it both SK and TD? If that was the case then they had no choice. If KM was also in foul trouble they may have dominated in the first half but it was at a price. Coach G and staff are unique coaches but I doubt there is much they will change except try to execute better. oakland must have played well but MJ is a well coached, well schooled team this year that will wind up in the Region and probably the state.

I think it was just TD and KM. With both of those players in foul trouble it makes it very hard to have a quick perimeter defense and keep people from driving to the basket. KM also takes charges very well and makes other players think twice about driving to the basket. I forgot to mention that MJ had a great press defense, and if you have people that aren't used to dribbling around pressure or that just dribble when they have to it makes it very difficult to beat a well executed press. I was just happy to see a competitive game that kept me interested. Both teams played aggresive and the refs let them play for the most part which is what I like to see.

Looks as though Riverdale is the only true team outside of maybe Cookeville that has a real chance of advancing very far in the region. I wonder if Riverdale's lack of size will catch up with them down the road.

I wouldn't say that Riverdale and Cookeville have the only chance of advancing. A couple of well placed shots and breaks in the game could have lead to an Oakland victory. Also if Oakland can develop a third scorer between now and the region they have a legitimate chance. They have a couple of young girls that don't look to shoot, but as the season progresses and they become more comfortable and accustomed to playing on the high school level that could change. And I wouldn't worry too much about a lack of size being a problem. I hate it when people assume just because you are playing against someone who is taller that they have the advantage. Height is only a factor if tall people can utilize their height and size, but I've seen many tall players that aren't able to do that. Plus if a short player is able to utilize their speed and body control then most of the time you can avoid getting blocked. The only other thing about taller players is post presence. If a tall person can't dribble then all you have to do is keep them out of the paint and away from the basket and throw a double team at them from time to time. If they can dribble then it makes them just a little bit more difficult to deal with.

  16. I know it took too long to reply, but I think that Oakland's biggest problem in the MJ game was the mental mistakes made on defense. They gave MJ too many open shots around the basket and allowed them to drive to the hole uncontested many times. A team like MJ will capitalize on those mistakes everytime. When you have players in foul trouble, the players with no fouls must realize that they have to not allow the people driving to the basket to have an open layup. Oakland dominated the first half, but made way too many mistakes in the second that they weren't able to bounce back from. It's true that Oakland only has two consistent offensive threats in, TD and SK, but if they plan on going farther they have to have some role players step up and chip in about 4-5 points (if they can).

  17. I think the only fans that are defensive about Oakland are those at Oakland? Oakland is the one who has won 7 games without a loss. They are the one who has kept the scores of the opposition down. Twenty points was mentioned by the oakland fans. That may be so conservative its a no brainer. I have heard of no prediction except myself and it being apologetic. I am not sure that 20 points is getting killed. Any team can get beaten by 20 and it necessarily be getting killed. you will see a competitive game if you go and it could be the support is just what they need. Are you going? I would sure hate that the top teams that 7AAA could have been beaten by 9AAA like they have. Oakland, are you going to step up? You have the undefeated record.

I just comment on the recent posts, I just noticed that yours said 20 points and that is where I got my number. I just hate to see people try to demean the success of Oakland to this point (not that you tried to demean or anything). I respect all teams and just want to see great basketball being played. If ANYONE goes undefeated they deserved to be respected no matter who it is. A PHargis post is always appreciated in my book. I apologize if what I said felt directed at you eh.

  18. While my heart is with the Pats on this one, MJ has too many guns Offensively and Defensively. MJ will likely hold TD to her lowest scoring total and the rest of the team won't be able to make up the difference. King will have to play her best game of the year but it will not be good enough. 4mer is very likely right but for Oakland to be a major contender for 7AAA after the season, they will need to stay closer than 20 points, maybe 10-12. As eveyone knows, this Oakland team is not the same team as last year and the difference is a healthy TD and playing better defense. Without either one of those things, Oakland could clog down. I would say Coach G knows this and Oakland does not want to get in to a running game with Mt. Juliet because that's their game. MJ will press, CM and TD will be forced outside to get the ball down the court and i will say that it will be MJ 62-39 over the Pats and will wear down Oakland. I sure hope I am wrong for 7AAA sake and prestige. MJ is the second best team in the toughest District in Tennessee.. This will be a great one to watch and Oakland's support will have a great deal to do with their play.

The way I see it, Oakland can only prove to be better than people thought they were in this game. If Oakland gets killed by 20+ points then that is what everybody is expecting (or hoping for). I don't know about Oakland's TD and King not being able to score big numbers, because each player is too versatile. The problem I see Oakland having is defense. They have too many missed defensive opportunites that often leave a man wide open because someone wasn't paying attention. I don't care if MJ wins, I just want to see a competitive game and Oakland not give up because everyone is already expecting a loss.

  19. trUE, but they had to re-group Friday nite and did.

I'm still waiting to see if they can bounce back or hold on to a lead night after night against tougher opponents. Since they were up by so much it really should not have been a contest Friday but Oakland made it a contest.

of course they did...If people don't contain TD or if they worry to much on TD oakland will hurt who ever they play

That is only true if everyone on Oakland comes to play. When TD is being over pursued during portions of the game, her teammates have to make some quick and easy points. I want to see some double digit assists games, which should be possible if the team brings a bunch of double teams.

  20. Seems as if Sara King did that same thing last year about this time. Coach G must have begun her "After New Years" push or has it been pushed ahead this year like Christmas shopping usually has been. Seems so.

Didn't have the opportunity to see much of last year's season, but I don't think King saw too much play time the season before last. So I did not expect her to do too much at the beginning of last season until she got accustomed to playing big minutes. Last year was a learning experience for her, now this year she has the opportunity to display what she learned. Things are definitely looking up for the team as a whole, but the real test will come after their first loss. Right now things are easy for them, but it's always interesting to see how a team bounces back after they lose. (Just remembering the lost they suffered to Riverdale in the District 2 years ago, and how they bounced back big in the Region.)

  21. If the refs beat you, you should have made less mistakes and been more ready to let them call however they please. If the refs get into the game change your game strategy. It's not an option but a necessity!!!!!!!!!

I've seen too many games where one team was playing very aggressive while the other team was not. Even though both teams were playing pretty clean, the refs always tend to pick a side. The only call that I have a problem with on the high school level is the block/charge. This call seems to fluctuate by the minute, and what was a charge 2 minutes ago is now a blocking foul and vice versa.

Coaches should realize by now that you are not just playing against the other team you are also playing against the ref. No game is called perfectly by the refs (or the fans either), but it's just something that has to be overcome. Like Blink said, you might just have to change your game strategy, or have a very deep bench.

  22. I am very pleased with the progress that Sara King has made so far this yr. Keep up the great work!

Sara King has improved significantly. Hopefully others will continue to improve and find their niche in the team's offensive scheme. If that happens, then Oakland will definitely become a force to be reckoned with in the district.

  23. Well Oakland has started off real good this year...very good. Alot better then they did one year ago. If they can keep it up they might have a good record this year. They have surprised everyone...even theirselves. I dont think they came make it past riverdale or maybe siegel, but if they come together and by the time they play them they might have a chance to take district. If we all look at riverdale how can we say that they wont take oakland and put them in thier place. The girls really havent played anyone worth talking about. Untill they do they need to keep playing and winning. GO LADY PATS!

The high school girls' game is one of defensive match ups and inconsistency. Rarely do all of the good players play well throughout an entire season, and some of those good players crumble completely under pressure. To say that Oakland will not be able to hang with Riverdale or Siegel is yet to be seen. I haven't seen Riverdale play this season, but it would be hard for me to believe that they have the speed to keep up with Oakland. Plus Grandstaff is a good coach and is sure to have something up her sleeve for both of these games. I can't wait to see either one of these games.

  24. My own opinion i think she could do better than ETSU, i mean if Ann Marie can go to MTSU then i think Tara could as well.

TD probably wouldn't have went to MTSU anyway. She wants to play and contribute to her team's winning. Then again the greatest thing about college is getting away from home and getting out on your own while becoming a more responsible adult. It kinda defeats that purpose if you just walk down the street to go to college.
