  1. Could be. Maybe that's why Penn State beat Iowa, since Iowa wrestlers don't shake hands w/ opposing coaches after their individual dual matches either.

Happy to discuss further with anyone, just PM me or start a separate thread. Don't want to high-jack a thread any further that's dedicated to congratulating Father Ryan's state dual title.

    -TH

There is NO question that is why Penn State won! Any student of wrestling knows that. Sanderson would no doubt agree.

Seriously - thanks for your input and reasoned response TH. And don't worry about "hijacking" this thread. D2Wrestling did that long ago . . .

D2Wrestling - sorry snowflake, but I'd be a bit more concerned about "sportsmanship" on the mat - versus a customary handshake (not required) immediately after the match. Give me a break! And I'm NOT calling any team out - I saw plenty of bad sportsmanship on the mat across all divisions this past weekend. That is what needs to be cleaned up - and called consistently by the refs.

  2. Waiting for Ambush11 to show up and explain what went wrong for the Blue Wave.

Congrats to the Irish, Coach Simpson and Co. do it again. Just goes to show that nothing matters until February!

First of all, it's "Ambush115" - get it straight. It's not hard.

Secondly, not sure why you are calling me out. In the only previous post on the subject, I stated that McCallie was a "sleeper" and matched up well against Christian Brothers. I believe both statements proved to be true. Look it up. Again, it's not hard. But I'll break it down for you. McCallie was a sleeper - virtually nobody predicted them to make the finals after earlier losses to Baylor and FR. And, after beating CB, it looks like they matched up pretty well. Wouldn't you agree? So again, why are you calling me out??

Third, not sure what you'd like me to explain about the match. FR earned it. They won the toss, put out a very strong and strategic line-up, wrestled incredibly hard, got some key pins, and won the swing matches they needed to. Pretty simple. And congrats to them - deserving state champs. But if you're still confused about the match and don't understand the finer points of wrestling, I've got just the solution for you.

    Peace out.

  3. McCallie at full strength will be hard to handle. They are flying under the radar. I think a Ryan McCallie state duals finals is a serious possibility. I do not see Baylor beating Ryan again.

Agreed. McCallie may be the sleeper here. I think they match up very well against CB. Going to be fun!

  4. Great discussion! So many incredibly talented wrestlers right now.

My vote has to go to King. Want evidence of how feared he is? Go watch a replay of FR/McCallie from last week: King walks onto the mat, Dendy stays on the sideline.

Sorry, but that's a pretty bone headed remark. It was a dual meet. I'm quite sure the coaches determine who goes out on the mat - not the kid wrestling. It's a team sport and the coaches are trying to find the best match-ups to get the best result for the TEAM. Dendy is quite an accomplished wrestler and hasn't run from anyone his entire high school career. Not saying he'd beat King, but let's not make assumptions based on ZERO facts.

  5. Brackets have been released. Let the controversial fun begin. I'll go first. Enjoy :)

    4th- Father Ryan

Well, based on this past weekend, I would agree with your predictions. But, as always, there are some unknowns. If McCallie is at full strength (with Duhm back) and with the right line-up they can challenge for the title. Baylor seems to be peaking (again) at the right time and already has wins against FR, MBA, and McCallie. Honestly don't know how deep (top to bottom) CB is but I'm sure they'll be right in the mix. Either way, should be some great wrestling this weekend!

I think when the dust settles it will be:

    1. Baylor

    2. McCallie

    3. Christian Brothers

    4. Father Ryan

  6. Hey,

I'm Alex's dad. Alex is a big 106. I don't know how much Simpson cuts for 113 but regardless Alex often wrestles at 113 and does fine, so Alex, me nor his mom is using that as an excuse for him losing to Simpson.

Also choosing bottom was the right call at the time. He's usually good off bottom and down by two having come very close to a reversal in the 1st period, bottom was the logical choice. So no excuses for that either. Probably won't do it next time though, but at the time it made the most sense

Fact of the matter is Simpson just out wrestled Alex on that day. No excuses. Alex could have taken an (I assume) easier match at 106 but he stepped up to try and help his team and to also challenge himself against a very good wrestler in Simpson in a dual meet that largely means nothing in the overall scheme of things. In my opinion that's how you get better. And I'm really proud of him for stepping up and giving it a shot.

It's been such a good experience for Alex to wrestle varsity as an 8th grader. He loves being on the team and being able to contribute.

I appreciate all the nice things some of you have said about Alex .

Apologies for getting long winded. I wrote this to say alex nor his family are making excuses about the loss. Simpson wrestled a great match. I'd like to say good job to Him and the whole Father Ryan team. We hope to have a better showing next time

Great post Chip. Very classy after a tough loss. And apologizes if I stirred things up in my earlier posts. Both are GREAT wrestlers and fun to watch. I didn't mean to take anything away from Simpson as he wrestled tough and smart in the match. And I think a lot of folks would love to see a rematch. But the future is certainly bright for your son! Good luck the rest of the way!

  7. I was looking forward to Dendy vs King. I know they trained together as kids and have both been at the top of their game this year. Dendy has a huge win against 2x Georgia state champ Cody Cochran where he dominated while wrestling at 160. King hasn't had anyone go a full match with him yet that I know of. Mistake on McCallies part in my opinion. Let the boys wrestle. I know the fans were anxiously waiting for that one but the Father Ryan fans once again showed their rudeness by booing Dendy as he walked onto the mat. I know he didn't back down from that match and no 18 year old kid should be bood at for following directions.

Good points and certainly it was not Dendy's choice to bump up. As for the FR fans, I'd have to agree. Have some class people!

  8. I guess you didn't see him at the GP West.

Not sure what you are getting at. I did see Whitworth at the GP West Invitational. He looked great - he went through the competition with relative ease . . . I think he had three pins and a tech fall. I think he wrestled a senior at one point too, but he was wrestling his weight (106). No doubt he's strong, I just think Simpson was a much tougher matchup at 113.

  9. Impressive win for Christian Simpson over Whitworth

No . . . not really. Huge difference in muscle mass and maturity. Not to mention experience. Also, there were some things in the match that didn't go Whitworth's way - that don't show up on the stat line. Congrats to Simpson and hopefully we get to see a rematch.

  10. For what it's worth, Simpson and Whitworth weighed in within 1.5 pounds of each other (Simpson at 112 and Whitworth at 110.5)...hardly "wrestling up"

Well then, I hope Simpson relishes his victory over an 8th grader! Haha!! Hope those two will wrestle again at the State Duals - my money is on Whitworth EVERY time! He got robbed of 2 points in the first period (just my opinion), then (again just my opinion) coach made a mistake putting him on bottom in the second (when I'm pretty sure Whitworth wanted neutral). Anyway, two great wrestlers, but the "muscle maturity" between a senior and 8th grader is worlds apart. Hard to even compare the two.

I also don't think McCallie showed their hand in this match. If there is a rematch, it will be very entertaining (with perhaps a different outcome). Tornado looked VERY strong with Ward, Herring, Sell, Dendy, Duhm, and Henry. Not to mention Whitworth.
