I refer to todays players and their parents as “STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE”. Most of them would much rather lose the game and look cool than win the game with a blue collar work ethic.  The days of hating to lose more than you like to win are gone forever!

Couldn't agree with this as well as what others have said.  Coaches, parents, players, society as whole emphasizes the me over the we. I know a lot of great coaches, who have recently decided to get out of the profession (high school and college), and wouldn't be surprised if more don't soon.  Those replacing them are cut from the same cloth as the players/parents.  It's cyclical.  I digress.

Happy Football Friday eve. Any good match ups this week?

Coaches teach and demand discipline from the players. So many undisciplined selfish players on every team these days. We see players on TV at college and pro level that can't control their emotions. It is just the world we sadly are living in.  Not just metro and public schools that have these players also. It is such a me society and kids see and learn this behavior from social media outlets and even in adults. Dysfunctional world.

Agreed.  Heard a really good coach say recently "There once was a time, players wanted to win State Championships, now all they care about is their own scholarship.

    Me > Team philosophy. Sad.

    What happened to Hillsboro program?

Always been about teams with best players will win most. Coaching can have impact but I have seen great players really make a coach look good. When talent is equal coaching will make a difference.

I can agree in part with what you said Buddy.  However Hillsboro cannot fall under your scenario this year.  They've historically had great players, but are 0-5, soon to be 0-6.   Sad, considering all the new upgrades to the school/facility.

Sure, great players can make a coach look good, but if a coach can't line them up and get them to know their responsibility and assignment, and get them to play as a team, then they ain't going far.   Which why most metro teams have historically struggled in the playoffs (with exceptions), because like you say "when talent is equal, then coaching matters".  Cheers to week 6!

Metro needs a good competitive Hillsboro team to be among Nashville's elite.  In the recent past, the Burros have been one of Metro's most consistent teams regarding wins/competitiveness.  They should have a really good OLine this year with maybe the largest player in the state anchoring its Oline.  I'm hoping they can make a playoff run this season.

Hillsboro hasn't been competitive outside of Metro since Clayton was there 5-6 years ago.  Don't see that changing either.  Shame because they've got to have the best facilities in Metro now.

As long as metro continues to recycle metro coaches the football will continue to be at best mediocre. You have listed  no one that is the quality needed. Just like buying recapped tires.

I'm not disagreeing with this at all. However McGavock is an average metro job at best anyways.  I don't see it getting any big names from out of county simply because I don't view it as one of the best jobs in Metro. So a metro guy sounds like it would be the fit here.  Just think it's a long term (3-4 year fix) for whoever gets the job, seeing how decimated the program has been in the past few years.

I find the second half of your post to be very interesting. I have been an educator for 21 years and have worked in a large metro setting (Memphis) and small very rural districts. I cannot speaking for metro but only from my experience. The school in which I worked in Memphis experienced some problems academically. But I think the academic problems stemmed from a climate issue. The school was not a safe environment that was conducive to learning. Fights on a daily basis, two guns taken out of the school that year and I even saw a kid get stabbed during lunch. There was no way any significant amount of learning was going to take place in that school. I blame no parent for wanting to take their kid elsewhere. I hope that is not the case in MNPS. But sometimes climate has to be fixed before academics can improve.

I'll admit at first I was unsure of what you meant by climate, but I think I understand.  I do think there are a significant number of parents in MNPS who don't send their kids to their local school or any MNPS school for the sake of the academics and/or environment of that school and/or district.

In turn all the best athletes flock to the schools that are winning.  *Insert recruiting, cheating, etc arguments*, but in reality why would an top-tier athlete want to go to a school that has not won many games and has poor academic value.  Instead you could go to Cane Ridge, Pearl Cohn, Hillsboro, etc and at least trade off the academics for the athletics.

Academics and athletics are not inseparable in MNPS.   Raise the academic standards and I believe you will raise the athletic level.

Says you. Not a single head coach in metro  could get a head coaching job in Wilson, Sumner, Rutherford, or Williamson if they wanted one. Not a single head coach in one of these counties would even consider a metro job. Like I said even being an assistant is better than being a head coach in metro.

This is a little bit of a stretch, and not always true. Clayton left Franklin to take the Hillsboro job and went to the state within 2 years of being there.  Jay Gore was at Brentwood for some time before going to McGavock. I think opportunity is there from both outside MNPS and from within to hire quality coaches.

The issue is the academic part someone mentioned a few posts prior. MNPS ranks exceptionally low in comparison to other counties across multiple academic levels (reading comprehension, test scores, etc).  Raise the academic level in the district, and in turn raise the athletic level as well.  Why? Because more Metro-Davidson families will choose to send their kids to their local school, instead of a private/charter school.

Coach Fitzgerald is a legend in metro and Tennessee high school football. The congratulations and then disrespect wasn't called for! Coach has done alot for inter city kids. Don't nobody care about Beech and Gallatin in this situation.

I fail to see how posting his record against a few Sumner county schools is disrespectful?

Coach Fitzgerald did an awesome job everywhere he has been in the metro school system.  A man of high character and he will be sorely missed on the grid iron by many.

Congrats to him on retirement. 26-19 record at Hillsboro during his tenure, including a 1-10 record against Gallatin and Beech, subpar. He did make the playoffs playoffs each year, but was put out by Beech a few of those years.

Hillsboro should look to hire from the outside (of district), in order to compete with Sumner schools. Hiring from the current staff would only breed similar results, and it sounds like he (Fitz) plans to stay on and coach?

Wonder if the principal will be forced to hire who the upper management on Bransford wants or will he get to choose his own coach this time around?

The real issue is metro hiring head coaches at the school. There was time when potential head coaches interviewed at the board with the district AD, board members, principal, and school AD. Now it has become a joke!

Don't be fooled by the current hiring standards in today's Metro School.   So long as Roosevelt Sanders is the county AD, he will continue to dictate who is hired at high profile schools (schools that are or have been historically successful).  Example - when the Hillsboro job was open a few years ago, the Principal at Hillsboro's first choice was not to hire Fitzgerald, but because the higher ups wanted him, that's what they got.

So long as the good ol' boy system is in place from the same group that have been running Metro for all these years (Roosevelt Sanders, Tony Majors, etc), then you all will continue to gripe and moan about have's and have not's and recruiting.  Why?  Because they are only concerned about the handful of programs that have a chance to be successful.

  12. Sad to hear about Coach Waite over at East.  Anyone know what happened specifically?

Not to change subject entirely, but what is going on with Gore at McGavock.  He told everyone (coaches, friends, etc) he was leaving this year but is 3 months into 2020 and he's still there.  I'm afraid his stock value as a HC has gone way down the last few years, with a run of bad seasons.  Principal also contemplating retiring soon also.

Nevertheless, the metro carousel keeps on moving...It's time they (All of metro) hire from outside the district.   IMO

They could either play or turn in their stuff too.  If the players are running the team decisions then that is a major issue.  A lot of successful coaches weren’t the players #1 picks over the years.

Couldn't agree anymore with you!   Players or Parents running the show is never a good recipe.

  14. Heard earlier, that the players at Overton were against the supposed hire (Davis) and went to the admin (both Principal and Athletic Principal) and vocalized their concerns, which has thrown things back in disarray.   Any hearing anything similar?  Personally I hope he gets the job, I remember watching him play at Vandy and have met him personally on several occasions.

  15. I remember those Glencliff days back when Hershel Moore was the coach there.  I actually just saw an article about him that he passed away recently.

Metro has had its fair share of success at multiple schools.  It's great to see schools like Cane Ridge and Pearl Cohn continue to bring out the best in Nashville.

  16. Not to reopen a deep wound, but I will simply add a few words to the Metro recruiting hoopla.

While I do believe there are actual active recruiters (particular those in organizations not affiliated with a specific school) in Metro Nashville, I think all too often people conflate recruiting with transferring.   For instance a top LB at a 0-10 school is going to transfer to a better school if they have the ability and means to do so.  I know I would if I was in that situation.  And given the open enrollment that exist, the system allows for this to happen.   People are quick to blame recruiting when a good player transfers to a winning school.

Also, when Ron was at Hillsboro back in the early 2000's, Hillsboro was the only open enrollment school in Metro.  Meaning if you could provide your own transportation to the school, you could attend even if you didn't live in that school district.   They had tons of talent coming there during those years from every corner of Davidson County.

Also, Cane Ridge has been ripe for a while to be very successful.  When the school opened and Abner was hired he had all types of talent, same when Parks followed, they both were unable to put together the right formula to make any deep run.    Coach Woods has been able to piece that puzzle together.

Lot of games happening tonight due to no school tomorrow and Monday!  Should have lots to discuss tomorrow!

Burros haven't been impressive?? I believe anybody in this thread would be honestly satisfied to walk away with just a 31-16 loss to Div II AAA 3-peat state champ Brentwood Academy (that Hillsboro held a lead for a little bit). Burros will be a tough opponent for anybody

Hillsboro does not appear to be the same caliber as in years past, I think both Beech and Gallatin will give them trouble.

What is going on with Wilson Central?  Few playmakers or poor coaching?
