I don't get all the hate for the different levels.

College has D1, D2, D3, NAIA and JC levels for individual sports.

A kid getting AA status at an NAIA school diminishes the kids on the stand at D1... that's exactly what you are claiming.

If it were team sports,  an apples to apples comparison is Nick Saban complaining about Carson Newman winning a title.

    I just don't see it.

Ocean, you are correct about parents ruining the sports experience.  As coaches and parents we need to elevate the entire program, not just our kid(s). I've seen parents that dominate the rooms/fields, only looking for their kid to get attention and improvement.  To quote a fairly successful dude, "it's amazing what you accomplish when you don't care who gets credit". That's how parents and coaches should approach making a program better.

At Blackman this weekend there was a lot of talent in the room. I was impressed by some pretty high level kids there.

I wouldn't say there is a lot of hate.  There are only a couple guys on this board against it.  But they comment on every thread, every year, about the same thing.  So, it just appears there is more.....you know....because they are very very persistent.

Paul Johnson who is at 32 for WC seems to be in a slump as well as he is no longer ranked and lost to a kid that frankly I’ve never heard of. Crisp has also been struggling lately but I would have to favor crisp.

If bradley decides to move lipsey up I would be willing to give them bonus against warnock. Go look at some of his results, a win over caleb urochuk is all I have to see to convince me he would major or pin warnock

last year duals lipsey over warnock 2-0.  major or pin?

Thank you all for your input. This is great discussion material.

The last thing I want to do is discourage my kid from going hard and working to score. In hindsight, with an inexperienced opponent, he should have probably just cut the guy and worked on his take downs until a pinning opportunity presented.

Now, with that said, I can see why that return could be called illegal. I'd still like to find some case examples to help me learn more. As someone else mentioned, that same return is normally not called a slam. If the defensive guy had landed on his head disproportionally from his body, or if he landed on his back, I would say easy call. To me, this one seemed like an overreaction turned into a judgement call and it didn't go his way.

Wrestler A has been developing nicely and hopefully he will learn from this. When I first saw this video, I told him not to change anything he is doing. After reading this discussion, I think that was the right decision overall. He didn't intend on causing injury and he will not in the future.

I do question and condemn any coach who will take an undeserved win at this age. I am not saying that this was an example of that by any means. I'm just saying......

    Thanks again for the input.

I think this is a good learning experience for everyone.  Thank you for starting the discussion.  Note:  if you can watch the really good high school teams at the state duals, you will see the mat returns take the ref out of the equation.  "Gentle like a baby"

Perhaps there are more people than I think that don't know so for those... for boys the best ranking system by far is rank wrestlers on rokfin.  Why? It doesn't rely on parents and coaches reporting wins/losses to Hamm or Hamm scouring track for results.  Rank scrapes Track Wrestling and applies an algorithm to produce class rankings by divisions (A, AA, II) or across the whole state.    Of course it costs $15 bucks a month but you can use for the length of the season and cancel so $45 for an entire season.  Small price to pay for vastly superior rankings.  Plus you can see every kid's matches from across the state, the rankings of there opponents in the matches, their team, as well as big wins from across the states, set up dual match comparisons, etc., etc., etc.  Simply unbeatable.    I'm sure at some point rank will add girls but until then I guess those who care are stuck with parents/coaches.  Honestly it is so cheap for what it provides I can't imagine relying on individuals "best educated guess".

I think there is a need for "free" rankings as then the kids themselves can see a list and strive to get there but really, and with all due respect to those that produce them, they aren't that good, and I don't expect them to be as time isn't cheap.

I like rank wrestlers and it is very good with the input that is provided.  I don't like how many coaches in Tennessee do not input the results on track from dual meets.  I don't know if they are lazy or just trying to protect their line up from everyone?  It's a secret, I guess.

and your implication is that in MidTn kids dont take wrestling seriously?

My point was: this is an outstanding opportunity for more mat time located on the middle Tennessee area.  I would like to see more introduced to freestyle/Greco.  Who knows, they may like it.  :)    Kudos to the Blackman and Summit programs for providing this opportunity and training.

At 120, Calvin Eason from Father Ryan beat Jarvis Little 8-4 in the Finals of the Johnny Drennan Invitational and won a State Championship on one leg after not practicing for a month.

At 220, Gabe Fisher from MBA won his second state championship and just finished 5th at National Preps. Did he and Noah Todd wrestle at any point this season?

Fisher was recognized as male wrestler of the year at the event.

Nobody is playing the victim. Everybody knows OW is a popularity contest. It isn’t just against cleveland. But what I am saying is, in the last 10 years of which cleveland has won 8, I don’t believe they have ever had a OW. Like Cbg said until there’s actually a legit criteria we have nothing to go by. I’m not taking anything away from any other wrestler or team. I’m just saying as mentioned before. There are some schools, not only cleveland, that get the short end.

Every award should go to Cleveland.  Yes, we get it.  Thanks for educating us.

There is no doubt in my mind.  If those two great athletes switched uniforms and weights, you would be on here complaining, talking about level of competition much harder in one bracket over the other.

Before it was announced, I figured it came down to those two.  And if Cleveland would have won it, wouldn't have surprised me.  I would have been on here saying great season, and great tourney.  They are both outstanding and expect they will succeed on the next level.

At 106 I think you could take the Top 5 wrestle them 5 different times and the outcome would be different every time.

138 I’d love to see that match up. Shires wrestled really tough all year.

160 Dalon had more credible big wins to me. I really wish Brenot had wrestled a tougher schedule but that’s not his fault.

Brenot had four wins at Super32 in October.

  9. 138 had 5 returning medalist.  Don't know if any other AA brackets had that many, doubt it.  126 and 138 were the toughest brackets in my opinion.  Every year this conversation is discussed by those that feel someone else should have won it.   He earned it.

I think it should’ve gone to Bradford. That bracket at heavyweight wasn’t near the bracket at 126.

Shires was undefeated, amazing season, well deserved.
