I post for various reasons. I am always glad to have any Mav support from all Mav supporters. It passion and they bring something to the table. I Get lonesome and I get beat up too. But I have a passion that someday the Mavs will win the State. It would not matter if they never win it again! Passion for my nephew. I think he deserves it but that doesn't win championships as I have found out over the years. So we try again this year. And above all I have deepest respect for Betsy. But 1 week out of the year we have to put away the peace pipe and pick up the bow and arrows. When it's all said and done we live to fight another day and shake hands, again year after years.

Well said. If Betsy can't beat AC, then I will be pulling for you guys to bring back the Gold ball. I do think that Greenville is the best team on this end of the state and it will be a tall order for either the Cyclones or the Mavs next week. But that is why we play the games. Anything can happen. I'm interested to see how Betsy handles the Mav running game with their new defensive scheme and personnel. I'm also curious if Betsy can throw the  ball with success like they have been. I think this game will be just as competitive as their first meeting and I can't wait to watch it.

  2. Betsy has changed their defensive scheme quite a bit this season and are finally getting settled in with it.Their offense is cruising and the special teams are solid. They will be hard to beat. Their Rb has found a new gear and I think they will try to run the ball and control the clock. If they are able to do that, they will win. Betsy's defense is tough, and if they can make AC punt 2 or 3 times, then I think AC is in trouble. I'll go Betsy 28 AC 21

Was the kicker not capable from there? Seems like Elizabethton missed a great chance to win it.

I think the plan was to take a shot at the endzone and then kick the FG if you had to on 4th down. It was only 3rd down and 11 seconds left. You just got to put that ball out of the back of the endzone if no one is open. Not a good throw. Great game to watch though. AC killed us with over the top and splitting the seam deep balls. But Betsy's defense was punishing tonight on anything in front of them. They were bringing the lumber. Our offense is starting to get it together. We may not win another game all season but I bet nobody is looking forward to playing us. AC has a great team, we may see you again in a few weeks. AC needs to quit worrying about Greeenville and State championships and worry about next weeks game. You have a team capable of winning it all but you could also exit in the second round if you don't get better every week. I think Betsy may have the best 1-4 team in the country. LOL.

Can’t wait to hear the excuses from the Betty fans…..

No excuses from me! This is yall's year, we are down a little, so you guys should beat us. If you don't, then I guess you weren't as good as you thought you were. A 42 point beatdown and a running clock, I doubt that very much. But good luck to you guys anyway, even though it's obvious you won't need it.

You know Rider had a similar game in 98 in the semis against Maryville when we only had 5 classes and inexplicably Maryville was in 4A. Having both of his grandkids a jr an sr those boys left it all on the field to win a State Championship for the Man who meant everything to them and molded them into the men they later became.
Cyclones led the whole way on the road on a cold wet night only to loose on a 75yrd trick play with under a minute to play and Maryville with no timeouts. . Although Jason came back with another loss in the semis to Knox Central. I CANNOT imagine the utter devastation Rider and the Boys felt after being a play or 2 away at Maryville from delivering a State Championship to the Man they both loved and respected so much. Of course Rider retired the next season but i can’t help but think he carried the ghosts of Lynn Goddard to his grave.

Great Post! A lot of history being discussed in this thread. Great info!

Long trip for the Mavs to Upper East Tennessee to face a good Elizabethton team. Big game with a playoff atmosphere to it. Mavs had a tough games with Rhea. They have beaten mighty Powell and Science Hill.  I got to go with the Mavs by 28-21, this one will be a slobberknocker.

Long trip for Betsy, the game is at Anderson County.

  7. I don't know about this game. But I think we will know a lot more about each team when it's over. AC's offense looks about as solid as it can get. Betsy's defense is solid, but maybe not strong enough to control AC's offense. I think Betsy would have to hold AC to under 20 to have a chance to win this game. I don't think they can do that. I think Betsy may be able to move the ball some, but they will need to move it a lot and keep AC's offense on the sideline. That is what Rhea County did the first half and it worked to a degree. I don't think Betsy has the horsepower on Offense.

    Betsy-15

    AC- 27

  8. We will see how it goes for the rest of the year, but I think Betsy may have the best defense I've ever seen them have. I think if the offense can get their bearings and get just a little bit going, Betsy will be no fun to play come playoff time. The difference in the game turned out to be a NFL looking punt that Boone downed at 1 inch line. Next play, Boone scores their lone TD on a Betsy fumble in the end zone. Boones kicking game is going to come in handy for them as the season progresses. When that kid kicks, it just sounds different. Really hard hitting game for both teams. Good luck to Boone the rest of the way.

Well... If I’m judging by week 1 I’d have to favor Greenville by maybe 2 or 3 possessions. However Betsy will still do well this year. Shawn quite frequently  has the team identity figured out after a few weeks. In 12’ they started 0-2 and still went to the semis . In 10’ they lost 5 games and still went to the semis. This team could drop some games if they don’t get more productive offensively. I’d like to see #18 Mitchell at QB and let him get the ball to #5, #21, #9 and #19 (I’m sure there’s more).

I think you will see #18 at QB a lot more going forward. Maybe starting with the Greenville game. The defense will have to try to keep them in games until their offense wakes up. The receiving corps is solid, they just need to run more than 2 or 3 plays offensively.

Homer alert… what that means is he is a really good player on a great team….

That's the truth! He's been a great leader but has been fortunate to be surrounded by a bunch of other really good football players, great coaches and supportive school admin and community. Until this year, he wasn't even the best football player on his own team, much less the best in the state. With that being said, I think he is by far, the smartest high school QB I've ever seen play. I do think it's a shame that he wasn't even considered for the 4A Mr. Football. If he wins another state championship, he will have been the QB on 3 state championship teams. I would think that is a mighty rare feat, in any class or any state.

  11. I was wrong about this game the first time they played, so with that being said, I hope I'm wrong again. Greeneville 30 Betsy 21. I think Betsy's defense has improved but they don't have enough weapons to score much on Greeneville. Look for Betsy's defense to be on the field a lot. Betsy doesn't have the run game to keep drives going and I'm afraid that the big plays will be few and far between.

The series started in 1924, the first two games between the two saw Greeneville win by a combined score of 89-0. The 1926 season saw one of two ties in the history of the series. Elizabethton got their first win over Greenville in the 1927 season, 19-0. Elizabethton would take the next 9 straight games in the series before it ended until 1953.

Now that's the kind of historical breakdown every game thread on here needs. Nearly a hundred years ago they got this rivalry going.

Out of curiosity why did west ridge drop ehs? Or did ehs drop west ridge?

I don't think either dropped. They were just never scheduled originally. With Betsy just having 9 games, I'm sure they were taken into consideration to schedule,  but West Ridge either already had a full schedule or didn't have the open dates needed to make it work.
