1. CAP......I really don't have to say anything do I?

  2. Right on Barb! You obviously know your football. Playing at Appy is in NO WAY as good as playing at Clemson....very astute on your part.

QUOTE(barb @ Feb 27 2007 - 05:23 PM) 826392120So playing for the 2-time national champions at Appy is not as good as playing at Clemson?

  3. Good point Waco. I think we are just content in this regard to be the biggest bullies on our block. We are afterall the winningest High School basketball team in history. So, while we're waiting (hoping) for a great run of athletes that would actually enable us to win a state title, we want to enjoy continuing the misery of those around here who hate and envy us so much.

QUOTE(WaCoJaCo @ Feb 22 2007 - 08:22 AM) 826384154This is so stupid. Everybody has forgot about the fact that we're all playing for a chance to be slaughtered in the State Tournment.

  4. I won't correct you at all. Read my post. Anyone who wants to talk smack about how great their basketball team is had better be playing when everone else around here isn't. As you said, "It's all about the tournament."

QUOTE(b_ball_fan2005 @ Feb 22 2007 - 08:08 AM) 826384135Noone cares about who wins in regular season. All it does is place you in the district tour. Just like march madness who cares who wins in the regular season its all about the Tournament. Correct me if im wrong but i do believe the vikings won.

  5. "Basketball is the only thng that Mr. Stonewall takes any pride in"....??? You must not be around during football season.

"So he is having a serious problem with denial". What, pray tell, am I denying? D-B IS the undisputed Champion of the Big 9 in the regular season. You remember, the one where you had to play for 3 months on everyone elses floor and win it? Tennessee High IS the Champion of the District Tournament. You remember, the one where you have to be the hot team for 3 days of basketball. You did it, congratulations. Now, let's see who walks out of the Region. If D-B gets beat and Tennessee High is still playing, I'll say it right here....they had the better year. If not, and D-B is still playing and Tennessee High isn't, D-B had the better year. By the way, we're not afraid of that Greeneville team that Science Hll beat by 29 points. You played a hard fought game IN YOUR BUILDING and won in overtime. Good job, now we'll see how it shakes out next week. Don't battle wits with me son. I let you off easy this time.

QUOTE(Cap1 @ Feb 22 2007 - 12:15 AM) 826383991Yah...we know exactly what you mean. I think the translation on that is...we lost the District Championship AGAIN!!! I'm not sure if you stop to realize that you are on Greeneville's side of the Regional tournament bracket...so YOU need to represent or SHUT UP!!! You know you can come up with some of the most egotistical comments...I had to bring at least one back on ya. Remember this?

I changed it around just a little...just for you.

I'm going to start another thread on this, but the Vikings didn't "share" anything! They whipped DB twice and they are the undisputed District 1 Champions and the #1 seed in the Regional tournament. Basketball is the only thing that Mr. Stonewall takes any pride in, so he is having a serious problem with denial!

    How you like it now!!!!

That's funny right there! I don't care who you are, that's funny!

QUOTE(WaCoJaCo @ Feb 21 2007 - 11:32 PM) 826383903It doesn't have anything to do with the fact that he hates DB, but Paul Overbay is the worst announcer I have ever heard. During the Arbys fans from outside the area were making fun of him and saying he was the most iratating person they had ever heard. "Down Town LeeRoy Brown" "He Glides and Slides Right on By" "He Roars and Scores" You will here that crap over and over the whole game. What a dufuss. Surley he owns the radio station. Nobody in their right mind would hire this clown. I could be wrong but I think he was the guy that cried on the radio when Tennessee High beat DB in Football back in the 90's

  6. Round 1 to the Tribe (3 months of regular season play and a District Championship). Round 2 to Tennessee High (Tournament Championship). Round 3 = ???. This is exactly where we were this time last year D-B fans as Sullivan Central (remember them?) was crowing all over this board. One week later we were still playing and no one else in our area was. NEXT week will settle the bragging rights for who has done what this week. Represent or shut up......from D-B onward,,,,,just win baby!

On a side note for D-B fans over 35 years old, you all are keenly aware of how hated we are all over East Tennessee, but particularly in Johnson City. Well, I had to listen to the game tonight on WJCW and Paul Overbay was doing the play-by-play. Friends, he couldn't have been more aroused if he were watching a porn film! It was like 40 years of D-B hatred was bubbling over. When the Indians sent the game into overtime I thought he was going to go straight Anna Nicole on us, no joke. Then when Tennessee High won it in overtime he was screaming in jubilation. Oddly, it gave me kind of a warm feeling knowing that we still get to people like that. Anyway, if you're an Indian, you know what I mean.

  7. I guess it's a pet peeve. I can't help but notice how the "regular season title" thing in the local media is always touted. I don't know if it's because that's all they have to cheer about or what. Anyway, I thought surely that would go away now and rightfully so. No chance...I guess it just irks me to suspect biased coverage and then to actually see it. As I said, pet peeve.

    QUOTE(brock20 @ Feb 9 2007 - 10:35 PM) 826365606

If it is not that important and doesn't carry much weight then why start a thread about it?

  8. Dobyns-Bennett is the undisputed Champion of the Big 9 Conference and the undisputed #1 seed. The Toppers' hold on the most useless of any of the 3 major sports titles (regular season basketball champ), is gone......unless you read local media outlets like the JC Press or Tricitiessports.com. They are gushing with stories about how the Toppers didn't "want to see the streak end tonight" with their victory over Sullivan East. News flash!!!! It ended!! As I said, I consider the regular season basketball title the least valuable of any of the 3 major sports because it carries the least reward. If you are gone by the Region semis, no one cares about that title. (except in Johnson City apparently) By next week this thread will be obsolete. But, for now, to the media in the Tricities....get over it!! The Toppers are in 2nd!

  9. I'm going to start another thread on this, but D-B didn't "share" anything! They whipped Science Hill twice and they are the undisputed Champions of the Big 9 and the #1 seed. Basketball is the only thing that Johnson City takes any pride in, so their media is having a serious problem with denial!

I want to say kudos to DB and Science Hill for winning/sharing the Big Nine Title. I am from Chattanooga and I am comming to see the District Tourney at Viking Hall in Bristol. I read in the paper that the District Tourney has a new fromat this year. Can someone explain how it works and I hope there is a big crowd at Viking Hall next week.

  10. D-B is very fortunate to have Charlie Morgan as their coach. I've watched them practice and it is a lesson in discipline. It's a very Marine-like approach where everything stops on a dime when Coach Morgan blows the whistle. Discipline and defense are emphasized and the kids are treated right. I don't know if my son will be good enough to make his team, but he can play for him anytime

    QUOTE(WaCoJaCo @ Feb 8 2007 - 08:27 AM) 826363122

This group of players are more than capable of making it to the state tourny. Morgan lost 7 games this year that he should not of lost. It took him 16 games just to figure out who his best 5 players were. Don't get to caught up in the win over Science Hill. The Toppers ain't all that and their coach ain't all that either. DB and Science Hill deserve better coaches.

  11. Boy that is interesting. That's one thing that I know goes on in tradtional football powers.....last period football. That's a way of life in Georgia and Florida. It has never really been embraced here in Tennessee. I believe Don Woods gets that at M-W. Be prepared for the academic crowd to howl at that one, but I believe that would be a HUGE advantage if the Devils could push that through.

I have herd good things about that coach from georgia. some one was telling me one of the coachs wanted the last peried class to be for football. That is how my old school did it you went there for your last class and got a credit for it. That worked out really good i hope they do that.

  12. Fitness.....I'll take your question and I'll try to be articulate rather than just a "homer" in my answer. Nobody beats someone forever. Science Hill will certainly win a football game against D-B at some point. They have had some really good looking athletes over the years that really concerned us. In some recent years that our fair weathered fans have apparently forgotten, we have had some awesome athletes too. We were dangerously close to winning the state in both 2000 and 2002. As for the "whipping boy" comment, it will come down to 2 things. 1.) Athletes....who has got 'em and how well are they being coached. If Smith isn't allowed to bring some assistants with him, I think he will have a hard time. As I posted recently, the atmosphere in J. Fred next fall for the Toppers to deal with will be very intimidating. In the last 20 years they have completely fallen to pieces in there, only to play us very well in JC. 2.) The mental game....The Science Hill Seniors will have been in kindergarten the last time the Hill beat D-B. If things are going well for them and they have been able to buy lock, stock, and barrel into Smith....they will have a chance. If it's more of the same (6 and 3...hoping for the upset), it will be hard for them. Darrel Watson will bring more pressure than Scott Smith has ever seen. The mental state of Science Hill at that time will greatly determine if it's "their time", or if their QB gets knocked senseless all night.

Let me ask you Dobyns-Bennett people something and be honest.

Do you all really think when Science Hill comes to town with the new coach we will be your usual whipping boys?

Or are there some reservations? I guess it is kinda early to tell though, huh?

There seems to be a lot of excitement on the Hill!

  13. I think that the enthusiasm of a new coach would have the potential for real trouble if D-B were playing AT Science Hill. I think new SHHS coaches have bumped off the Indians a couple of times in their first meetings with the game in JC. However.......the game will be at J. Fred Johnson Stadium. Coach Smith will find a daunting task handling that environment. I venture to say he will have never seen anything like it if the game means anything at all. (IE- D-B isn't an uncharacteristic 6 and 3 or something like that). Look at the history books. How long has it been since the Toppers played a competitive game in there? The massive crowd, the 300 + member band raining that warhoop down on them, the Tomahawk chop, and the swagger the Indians play against JC with at home. The Tribe has stumbled a bit in the post season the last couple of years, but this is Science Hill. History says it will be a tough house for a guy who wants to run trick plays and throw the ball. Before you bet against Darrell Watson you had better do some reading!

  14. THE winningest High School football program in the history of the state of Tennessee. Deal with it.

You've defined your comfort zone. You have given up on being the best in the state and settled for the best in NE TN. You bully Bristol, Elizabethton and JC only getting to read about whats going on across the state after your Indians have their annual early equipment return.

Maybe a new weight room would help? Write a check to the DB ONE-AND-DONE FUND.

  15. I mean replacing Coach Clark will be a High School version of replacing the Bear. He is the man in Kingsport and has been there basically his whole life. No one will be able to overcome the "Graham never did it that way" issue. Like a coach I know that used to work there once said, "Make sure you're the guy who replaces the guy who gets fired when Graham leaves."

Pretty good post Stonewall. I agree that D-B historically has better programs than SH. But, most people judge "success" in number of state titles. In basketball and baseball this would give the edge to SH. I think from an outsiders standpoint, the perception in this area is SH is the basketball king and D-B is the football king. Baseball could be anybody really. As for your statement about Clark's replacement being "doomed to failure"......could you elaborate? Do you mean that he will have a hard time living up to the success that Graham had (which I would agree) or do you mean the well is going dry?

  16. Not so fast my friend. I wouldn't say they are "tops in basketball already". They are the team to beat right now, but they were at this time last year as well, and they thumped D-B by about 35 in JC. Still, D-B beat them in the Dome and played deeper into the post-season than them....again....for about the 4th straight year. Respect the 90's, but respect the present as well. Compare the Region titles, substate titles, and state tourny trips with the Indians for the last 5 years and you will come up considerably short.

Also, "baseball is as good as D-B if not better"??? Again, count the titles and the distance gone into the state playoffs. D-B wins that one too. Science Hill caught lighting in a bottle back in about '98 and won it all, but haven't outshined the Indians since. The Hill was rewarded last year when D-B beat them and sent them on the road only to have to host State Champ Farragut at home.

I will agree with you in one regard, Johnson City is booming! It only has one High School and it could become fierce if someone could stop the infighting over athletes and harness the talent available. The time to look to end D-B's dominance is not with your new coach, it's when Graham Clark steps down. I don't know how many more years he has in him and whoever replaces him in Kingsport is doomed to failure....no question.

The Hill is on its way to NE TN supremacy in every sport. They are tops in Basketball already, baseball is as good as DB if not better (those two are head and shoulders above the rest of the area), and if they dont establish themselves as the team to beat this coming football season then it will be in the near future. JC schools are on the right track athletically. The are making a noble effort at developing their elementary and middle schools and youth league programs. I really believe the new guy will have a true backing of most everyone involved. Heck, they have always had the athletes and financial support all they have been missing was an adminstrative committment. Now they have that. If the rest of the area dont follow suit then it means a lot of SHHS Championships (in every sport) for years to come.

  17. This thread certainly proves one common saying found on the T-shirts around D-B. "Loved or hated, but NEVER igonored". D-B has been out of the playoffs for 3 weeks and we're still talking about them. That's a tribute to the passion the Indians create. Whether you hate them and love seeing them fail, or you love them and die inside with their losses, 90 years creates passion not found in most programs. As I've said in other threads, D-B will eventually win a state title. Then, others will have to find something else to criticize (and they will). The shame of it is the timing. Judging by who is left in 5A, this would have been a great year to win it. However, as timing so often works, this D-B team wasn't the right one to come around on the wheel to do it. It will time up sooner or later. Just ask Sevier County from 1999.

  18. "and an coach who they know keeps alot of other kids away from the program that should be playing."

That brings up an interesting point. How is the situation over there now as far as basketball and baseball players being not only allowed, but encouraged to play football? Pitts absolutely hated his guys doing anything but living in the gym. No one who's in touch with reality can argue that. Bernie Young was pretty much the same. However, both of those guys are gone now. What's the climate over there for that now?

  19. "I don't think he would have lasted 8 years at db and their expectaions from their community."

No he wouldn't have, but that's hardly a fair comparison. Science Hill doesn't have a string of conference titles that spans over the course of many years. Granted, Bowles didn't win one either, but he did come close. I think his team's played D-B at least twice with the Big East title on the line. Think about this; Bowles inherited the same group of assistant coaches that were employed when he got there. He was allowed to bring no one that I'm aware of. The guys he kept were hardly successful. He should have been able to fire every one of them and build his own staff. Then you could hold him accountable. However, he kept them all, and from what I hear, he was a Christian man who just tried to get along. Now the new coach gets those same assistants.......are you following me? If the new coach gets to bring people with him, Science Hill owes Bowles a big apology.

  20. Not that it makes a difference now, but I heard the steam is coming off of Clark's head over at the school today. I talked to a teacher after school this afternoon and she said that Clark was fuming over two blown calls. The 90 yarder (ineligible man downfield) had NO ONE downfield on film. Also, the big play to Throp that was ruled out of bounds apparently was clearly in-bounds on the film. I know that can't be changed now. However, she said the officials were assigned from the Knoxville/Oak Ridge area and the staff was fighting mad, feeling that they had been screwed at home.

  21. You're joking, right? Please tell me you're not putting Science Hill football and D-B in the same sentence! Please tell me that you're just drinking and you really don't mean it. Otherwise you are making a complete fool of yourself. We've whipped you publically like a prison --tch for 13 straight years! This is like a Vandy fan wanting to talk trash to Tennessee. At least they did finally beat them last year. Go live your life through that basketball team that can't get to the state tourney anymore and pretend you're successful. You and especially your team have no place on a football board.

I guess it really doesn't matter now does it because my team made it just as deep in the playoffs as the mighty indians.....and I wouldn't call that trashing but then again I don't to resort to name calling to cover up my lack of intelligent thought.. :P

Looks like you have the right loser of the right team to symbolize the db indians....rotflmao
