  1. Briarcrest - 2

    Greenville - 1

Briarcrest got their act together and beat Greenville 2 to 1 with Briarcrest having numerous opportunities. Greenville scored their only goal in the first minute and then didn't have many opportunities after that. Briarcrest had one goal called back with an offsides call.

This was much improved over last year's showing against Greenville and all players received plenty of play time with one half primarily being played by the younger bench players including 3 freshman while six starters never entering during the half. All of the girls stepped it up for this game with good ball movement.

Score was 1-0 GV at the half. Last 20 minutes of the 2nd half played after 8pm in poor light on a field with no lights.

Briarcrest scored 2 late goals on GV's Sophmore backup goalie in scrums close in to the goal. GV's starting 2 forwards and starting goalie sat out most of the 2nd half. Briarcrest certainly looked sharper in the 2nd half though. Congrats on the win - it was a terrific game to watch

The game started about 30 minutes late. This is the 3rd year in a row I have watched a game at the Cellular fields where most of the second half was played in the dark without lights. It's not fair to the players or refs and is dangerous. Katie Hunter's organizers deserve kudos for another great tourney but please take a close look at starting times for those later games on the fields without lights.

  2. Look, don't take it out on me because you made some stupid statements while trying to make a good point. I'm just the one who called you on it. Separate the two issues and we're on the same page. ANY rule that helps protect a player in ANY way, is a good rule.

What you consider a stupid statement (poor choice of words in a mannerly discussion) is actually an attempt to point out the rules to protect the players are inadequate - and yes, even frivalous when put in context as to the severity of the sequellae of a head injury. But you are correct in stating any rule to protect a player in any way is a good rule. In that vain, as a ref, I hope you push forward in the efforts to require head gear to prevent what I consider one of the top 2 most serious injuries (neck is the other) possible in soccer. In the mean time, go boldly forward and give those yellow cards out in an effort to protect our girl's earlobes.

  3. So we should allow bobby pins because bleeding like a stuck pig on the head isn't a serious head wound??????

As I said - "almost needing a hospital visit" means it was not a serious injury. I have seen more brain injuries (concussions) in soccer than bleeding scalps or torn earlobes - and I have seen many soccer games - but do you have any idea of the severity of these "minor head injuries"? Probably not, since they only manifest themselves further down the road of life and you have know way of knowing. The scalp "bleeding like a stuck pig" for 5 minutes gets more attention than the 40 future years of inadequate brain function due to the concussion no one thought twice of.

  4. You are missing my point. I am not advocating not enforcing the removal of the aforementioned items. Of course they are a possible cause of injury. I am trying to point out the how ludicrous it is not to require the use of head gear in soccer. Of course earrings, hair pins, wrist bands, etc are dangerous - I am not disputing that - what I do feel strongly about is the cavalier attitude concerning the lack of attention concerning the need for head protection. Don't take this personally. I just take care of too many kids with brain dysfunction due to head injuries in sports including soccer.

  5. This was brought home a couple of weeks ago while our girls were practicing for tournament match the next day. One of our defenders wore a metal hair clasp to practice. The team held a scrimmage during practice and this girl collided with another girl and the clasp split her scalp open. Bled badly for several minites. Almost needed a hospital visit.

Anyone who knows anything about scalp injuries knows even minor ones bleed like stink and look horrible for a few minutes then stop. The fact that it "almost needed a hospital visit" means it wasn't serious. We should discourage the use of cleats since they can do exactly the same thing. I would be more concerned about this players concussion (yes she suffered one) rather than the minor scalp laceration.

  6. They're all important. The rules clearly allow me to help protect players by making sure they don't wear bracelets, earrings, etc. So I'm going to enforce them. The rules don't allow me to force players to wear head gear, so I can't. Perhaps the pressure would be better put on coaches and schools to force their players to wear head gear. And yes, a head injury is more serious than a torn earlobe.

So I go back to my original statement which you took offense to - it's PC and frivolous to require the removal of earrings and not require head gear. The problem is no one has the guts to require the use of headgear.

  7. I hope you are trying to be funny! Its called player safety.

Ever seen a stud earring after its been hit into the side of the neck?

Ever seen a hoop earring that been yanked off?

Ever seen someone's finger who got it caught in bracelet as they ran past.

Want to be wearing a nose stud when you take a ball in the face?

And I don't like the new rule either, because the referees are still the ones who have to enforce it. I think the intent must have been to put pressure on coaches to make sure the players don't have any illegal equipment.

No, I'm not being funny - I'm serious. Ever see a kids head split open because no head gear was required? Let's put this stuff into the correct perspective. What's more important to you - your kid's brain or his/her earlobe?

  8. yeah....it's a C+ world... and people are content with that.

So true... Maybe the answer is not "if you think you can do better, take the test and become a ref" but less people taking the test. There are a lot of things I don't do ( Ref, Brain surgery, etc.) because I know my talents and limitations. I would not make a good ref so I won't take the test in an effort not to "dilute the gene pool".

  9. Patience Leonard (No. 23), Devan McIntyre (No. 24), Claire Duncan (No. 1), Michelle Meade (No. 6) and Mackenzie Payne (No. 32).

A tough group to replace. #23 made All -State as a Sophmore at MF and would have repeated last year except she played 3 different positions (all well) last year.

  10. it was a great game. I'm excited to see if greeneville has 2-1 on the back of their warmup shirts next season. HAH

Poor form. But to answer your question - I doubt it. This game was very different (i.e. the level of officiating) compared to last year's. You won, you deserve some bragging rights but don't carry that swagger too long.

  11. Was Bearden flat?

No, it was Greeneville who was flat the first meeting between these 2 a few weeks ago. Last evening was more indicative of Greeneville's game. By the way, Greeneville started a Freshman goalie (her first start) and she did great.

After last years heartbreaker, Greeneville came to play and I think Bearden was just a little worried the entire game.

It was a well played, well officiated game. Bearden earned the win. Greeneville wishes them well at States

  12. Greeneville is a Bi-polar team - great one game and flat the next. If they can get their heads together and concentrate on last year's sectional game with Bearden and not this year's blow-out, it could be a very good game. If they come in on the down side of their bi-polar disease it wont be pretty. Without a doubt, they've got the talent to be the spoiler - just depends on which team shows up.

  13. Just wait until Oak Ridge travels to Science Hill. OR better hope it doesn't have that group of bozos that officiated the Greeneville - Science Hill match last night. The little dark haired guy (looks like a younger version of Mr. Bean) is particularly dangerous.

He really does look like Mr. Bean! And he has no clue what off-sides in soccer means.

  14. Lets just play Darwinien Soccer - get rid of the officials, anything goes and only the strong survive.

Soccer is no different than any sport utilizing subjective officiating/judging. It is part of the sport like it or not. At lest soocer has some rules for the officials to rely on. Many sports are decided soley on the subjective opinion of an individual judge or group of judges. That is even harder to swallow when your competing do your best then get screwed because the judge dosen't like your politics or haircut.

There is no answer to the problem. A team, coach or player must quickly adjust to the flavor of the officiating - good/bad/ugly/incompetent/tight calls/loose calls/no calls - and play accordingly.

  15. I agree. I drove down expecting (and predicting) a Farragut win. I thought Farragut was baffled by the defense and did not know how to attack it. Oak Ridge's defense is much improved from when they played Greeneville and they possessed the ball better than the earlier games I have seen them play.

I do think this gives Region 1 some hope!!!

Why does it give Region 1 some hope? I don't think it matters who Greeneville or Science Hill plays. As far as Greeneville goes, Farragut or Oak Ridge would be a wash. GV beat Farragut in pre-season and lost the first game of regular season by 3-1 but the game was much closer than the score indicates being tied most of the game and then GV scored an own-goal with about 30 seconds left. GV and OR tied in a very tough game played well by both teams. The earlier game this year with Bearden was a 7-0 blowout but some of the girls would love a chance to avenge last years heartbreak loss to Bearden in sub-state and also show that Bearden is not a 7 goal better team.

Oak Ridge is a very good team. The road to States for Region 1 goes through Knoxville and its never been an easy trip. It wont be any different this year vs Bearden or OR.

  16. What is any poll without some controversy. Ooltewah loses to Farragut 4-0 and moves up 3 spots while G'ville beats M'town West 3-0 and M-town East 9-0 and drops several spots. In any event, keep it up MJUHB.

And DB ranked above GV??? DB did well at a weak tourny this weekend but look at their opponents W-L-T compared to Greeneville's - no comparison.

Anyway - I'm glad Coach Calvert is doing well at DB - he's a class act and great coach.
