  1. You hope this isn't the case? What's your beef with the LMS coach? He's worked hard with the teams in the past years...the talent level hasn't been great, I'd like to see you come to that school and see how well you could coach. Or since, LHS needs a strong leader, maybe you should go there...if not, take Pat Summitt's spot at UT!

Whoa, somebody's got their panties in a bunch.... :thumb:

Don't blame the talent level if u can't coach. It's on the middle school level when you prepare & get the younger players ready for high school. Every since Ash ran Coach P off, the middle school program @ LMS has suffered. Neighboring school Rock Springs has consistently had it's girls ready for high school where as the girls that came from LMS were far behind. Now granted, the girls that come from Rock Spring do play AAU over the summer which helps, but you would think if a coach knows his/her girls are not preparing over the summer, you would work extra hard once school starts. As I stated, LHS is going to need a good coach in order to have the girls ready to compete in 7AAA next year & if you can't change a middle school program around & make it successful, how in the heck will you be successful on the high school level.....just a thought.

  2. IC, you are right they have most all of the input but if you think there is not an approval process and a security process of both coach and assts, there could be some surprises but I have never seen nor heard of that happening. The interesting naming will be who is the administrator. While I am not disclosing, I think the coach is already selected whether the administration is or not. And likely the adminsitrator is already known. Lavergne is a very good coaching job whose talent can carry them on for some time, even with graduation.

No question, Dick Ash is a fine administrator. He knows what he is doing and will do the right thing. Sorry Coach Dean is retiring. Any time a Coach/Teacher resigns, students get upset. If other coaches are handing the situation, things are well in hand. Still think the coach may have been picked and communication may have been done. All of 7AAA look look forward to finding out who the coach is of the Great School.

I don't think this a great surprise....Coach Dean did mention at the Banquet on last week that he would possibly retire so don't be surprise once we heard the news. Now, as far as Dirk Ash doing the right thing, I don't know. Since he carried both middle school coaches with him, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if LMS girl's coach got the head coaching position. I really hope this is not the case because he's not the best. At this time and with the talent lost, they really need a strong leader that's going to be able to keep the program going in the right direction. I really would like to see last year ####'t Coach P get the head coaching job....she has history with these girls & would do a great job.

  3. Congrats. A lot of schools mid=ssed out on this one. I have been watching him play since his 7th grade year and can honestly say he is one of the most underrated palyers I have ever seen and probably should have gotten more pub than some of the "stars" in this area

I agree icecold....He's a very good, well-rounded ball player,. Congrats & I wish him the best!

  4. Well Hockenberry is no longer the asst. principal. And I'm not sure if Couey's dad would be included in the firing process since he is a retired teacher and a volunteer assistant. They may allow him to stay since he is not actually employed by the school/county. From what I understand Bill Hockenberry was told he could stay at LHS as a teacher or he could help with the girls' program but not the boys'.

I thought Couey was out as the head coach....heard this over the weekend. Have yall heard otherwise?? If Hockenberry stays, would be good for the girls program, especially with some players not coming in but going the private route & one leaving.

  5. I do not know if Couey has officially left Lavergne but I do know for a fact that he has inquired about all of the coaching jobs opening in Rutherford Co including middle schools!!

I also have heard that Ash is bringing the Lavergne Middle coach with him.

Ash is shaking up everything....he's already told Coach Dean that he want his people to all be in house, so the girl's team assistants won't be back. I heard that Couey might be out as he doesn't have enough tenure. Who knows? Hopefully all the changes will be good for all the programs at LHS.

  6. So whats the word on the Lavergne Middle and Lavergne High jobs? I have heard that they are both coming open..... :bored:

    WOW!!!

This is my take...I heard they are moving the LMS coach over to the high school, I would think he would get the boy's coaching job if this rumor is true. He's a pretty good coach. The rumor was he was going to get the head coaching job after Moore left, but Couey got it instead. Since Ash is wanting his coaches to be in house, I would think he would be a prime candidate, once again if this rumor is true.

  7. I think next year you can book Shacobia Barbee of Riverdale and Caya Williams of Mt. Juliet as AAA Miss Basketball candidates. As good as Barbee was the last time I saw her, which was this past summer in AAU, she was even more impressive and dominating yesterday than I have ever seen her. She, and Williams, will play in the SEC or some other major conference, because they are both scary good at their age.

Did you see tht Bashaara Graves from Clarksville made the Parade's All-American High School Girls Basketball Team? She would appear to be definately in the mix if she gets this type of national recognition. What grade is she in this year?

Graves is a sophomore as well....she's awesome!! She played with the USA U16 team last summer....

    Here's her evaluation from Hoopgurlz:

    ******************************************************************************

    Evaluation

USA U16 Trials-May 09: Bashaara Graves of Clarksville, Tenn., is much stronger than most other high school freshmen. The physical 6-2 forward isn't afraid to mix it up in the paint. She has all the athleticism to be a top player in the class. She has good timing coupled with very good leaping ability, which makes for a solid shot blocker. She caught some of the taller posts off guard quite a few times in that regard. She could improve her footwork on the interior and finish in traffic more consistently, both of which should occur over the next three years. Her performance was impressive enough that USA basketball asked her to stay and practice with the team in place of injured forward Morgan Tuck.

    *****************************************************************************

Williams & Barbee have gotten alot attention & deservely so, but this young lady is just as good, and probably better in alot of ways. She is just in the wrong area of the state where she won't get as much attention because Clarksville is more of a softball town. I think all of us on the AAU circuit knows about Ms. Graves & know she will only get better as she continues to play at the high level of competition the next few years.

  8. I saw this on hoopgurlz...thought it might be worth posting here as well.

OK, tis the season. Seniors be careful with the All-Star circuit and the NCAA limit on participation. Prior to accepting any offer to participate be sure to clear it with your future coach or any coach that might be involved in recruiting you if you did not sign early. Do NOT take the word of an event operator or anyone who isn’t connected or affiliated with the NCAA or an NCAA institution. As you can see there is a heavy price to pay for exceeding the limit. It’s your freshman eligibility that’s at stake, be smart.

The actual legislation and page numbers in the NCAA manual are listed below.

    Page 163

14.6 HIGH SCHOO L ALL-STAR GAMES , EFFECTS ON ELIGIBILITY

A student-athlete shall be denied the first year of intercollegiate athletics competition if, following completion of high school eligibility in the student-athlete’s sport and prior to the student-athlete’s high school graduation, the student-athlete competes in more than two all-star football contests or two all-star basketball contests (see Bylaw

30.2.1.1 for definition of high school all-star contest).

30.2.1 High School Football and Basketball. As provided in Bylaw 14.6, a student-athlete shall be denied the first year of intercollegiate athletics competition if, following completion of high school eligibility in the student-athlete’s sport and prior to the student-athlete’s high school graduation, the student-athlete competes in more than two all-star football contests or two all-star basketball contests.

30.2.1.1 High School All-Star Contest Defined. A high school all-star contest is any contest in football or basketball that meets the following criteria:

    (a) The teams participating in the contest involve individuals who have completed their high school eligibility in the sport and have not yet enrolled in and attended classes during a regular term at a collegiate institution;

    (:thumb: The contest is scheduled and publicized in advance;

© The competition is sponsored and promoted by an individual, organization or agency; and

    (d) The individuals are selected for participation in the contest on an invitational basis and have not competed together previously as members of a team that played a regular schedule of games in an organized recreation or interscholastic program.

30.2.1.2 Contests Not Considered High School All-Star Competition. Contests conducted under the criteria listed in Bylaw 30.2.1.1 shall not be considered all-star competition for purposes of Bylaw 14.6 if one or more of the following conditions is applicable:

    (a) The contest occurs within a framework of a regularly scheduled recreational program involving solely participants from the community in which the sponsor is located;

    (:thumb: The competition is limited solely to participants from the community in which the sponsor is located and no revenue, including gate receipts, concessions, program sales or contributions, is generated from the contest;

    (d) The contest is scheduled in conjunction with developmental competition sponsored by the national governing body of amateur basketball (USA Basketball) or an active member thereof

  9. Congratulations to all the Miss Basketball finalists. Such a great honor to be

chosen in the elite group of nominees. I had hoped to see all 3 of the Singe A

finalists playing in the state, but that did not materialize. What a great year for

Beth Hawn! Would have liked to see you play one more time in your high school

career. At least I'll be seeing you play in the OVC.

Best wishes to Molly Heady tomorrow. What a wonderful journey. Going to enjoy

your play at TTU. On to the next chapter.

Good luck Molly....great ball player, fantastic young lady!!

This looks to be a great game with great matchups....hopefully people will come out in attendance for these Seniors last hurrah on the high school level. This game will have 4 Miss Basketball candidates with 3 on the west squad. There is going to have some high octane offense going on, should be fun to watch!!

  11. Good luck today in the Semi's Memphis Overton and Memphis Central! I would love to see a Memphis one-two punch in the finals!!!!

Probably would be a great matchup but would it generate enough money or put people in the seats....probably not, so I doubt this would ever happen on the girls side. My finals prediction is Riverdale vs Memphis Central.

  12. Petty reminds me of Dee Davis and Jen Risper - past VU point guards.

Mel B. should recruit both her and Barbee. :?

Dee Davis is my husband's first cousin.....I watched her the entire 4 years she was at Vandy and sorry, Tyisha doesn't play anything like her.

Congrats Riverdale on your trip to state....Y'all are playing very good ball at this point in the season.

  13. Jazzy and all of the Blue Wave at La Vergne, your school played a good game tonite and lost the game but gained the respect of all of the fans in the District. This was a team with personality and style and had a way of overcoming no matter what happened. It was a school that everyone would come to see just to see your style of play and your fine athletes and we will follow their careers for some time.

Thanks Mr. Phargis.....It has been a great run the last 4 years. I am very PROUD of our Lady Wolverines, I was really hoping that y'all made it to the "glass house" but came up a little short, unfortunately that's how it goes. To our seniors, Jasmine (Bri ), LaQuinta, Steph, Jasmine and Easha....love you girls, you all bring a smile to my face. It was a trying senior year and you showed character and strength as you fought through all the adversities. Even though your high school careers are over, you are now about to embark on new territories as you all go to your prospective colleges....(YEAH!! what an accomplishment). Always remember the friendships and bonds that you formed on this level, they are so very priceless. To the returning players next year, Swope, Kayla, Chelsea, Missy,

Aisha, Tyonika, Leah.....keep the tradition going. I don't people are expecting much from yall next year, but prove them wrong. Let's keep the winning ways going.

Good luck to Blackman & Riverdale...represent this district well!!

  14. Exactly RDMan....hate to hear that about Katie...hopefully it's not the ACL again. Is she a SR or Jr?

I know that seems like bad news but Blackman have Tiera & Tanya that can step up. If Tanya plays like she did on Monday, Blackman won't have any problems. I tell you that's one of the best games I have ever seen Tanya play. I think she really kept Blackman in the game.

To answer your question, Jazzy.....Katie is a Junior this year. Thank you for your kind words about her. She is a great athlete, in soccer and basketball. Wonderful family too!

Yes Tiera and Tanya must step up if Katie cannot play and I'm sure they will. I agree with your analysis of the game the other night. My daughter played with Tonya when they were 11 years old and now they are seniors together--she played the best game I've seen her play this year!

Good luck tonight in Lawrence Co. Blackman had to play there last year and it is a tough place to go get a win, but you can do it! Good luck to your daughter and your team tonight!

    GO BLAZE!

Thanks....I believe the girls will be ready to play. My daughter has played with Tanya since she was 12 or 13, I'm not quite sure at this moment. Tanya has grown & matured to a wonderful ball player. I am really proud of her. Good luck to your team & all the other teams representing 7AAA tonight.

  15. Exactly RDMan....hate to hear that about Katie...hopefully it's not the ACL again. Is she a SR or Jr?

  16. And HC you may be pushing it a little far. The seasons not over.

Perhaps. Just having a bit of fun!

It's all good,.... I know Blackman fans are very happy to playing in the championship game, they really are very fortunate that they are still in this thang. I'm sure if they had lost against Smyrna, hicotton would not be on here at all talking all that noise. I love it!!

  17. Jazzypha,

You defined the term predjudice, not racist. You owe these officials an apology for your comment. It may appear at times that they are predjudice toward one team or another, however to say they are racist, or their judgement is racist, is just flat out asinine.

Look t&j, you & I have been going at it since you decided to come to this thread & post. I for one will not continue to go back & forth with you or anyone else about this subject just to keep unnecessary bickering going. I did say it was harsh for me to call them racist & I will apologize for that because I don't know the 3 gentlemen personally. But, I will still hold fast to to my opinion that they were biased & they need to change their attitude. For example, my daughter went to one of the ref & asked for them to watch the 3 sec & he gave her a response that I care not to repeat. It's not necessary, they are being paid to do a job. They should do it with efficiency and with integrity. I understand they are not perfect & will miss a call or two but that's why 3 are on the floor. In regards to Mr. Melton statement in the DNJ, why shouldn't our expectation be high, I for one can't go to my job & not be efficient or work with integrity & expect to remain there. That's unreal.

  18. Some interesting replies & racists is what it means. Am I going to back down from my statement...no but maybe I should have said their ACTION were racist, not the 3 guys in particular because I don't know them personally.

Definition of racist - being biased or having a belief or attitude formed beforehand.

I played bball in the early 80's for a single A high school in West TN. We at the time had to experience all kinds of unfairness & unjustice as we played at certain schools. Now, the same attitudes & behaviors I witnessed/experienced then I see them manifest against our girls on a constant basis. Unlike the early 80's, this is 2010 & I for one don't expect to see this type of behavior but unfortunately I do. Sometimes, you can't help but have biased attitudes formed because of all the negative attention that LaVergne receives in the DNJ & etc. I just saw how someone stated on the DNJ Prep talk that the district should not be held at LaVergne because the school is "dirty." What the heck??? That's not fair to the students there because they always have to defend who they are and to me, that's what's sad. I am for what's right period, & anyone can be a racist at any time, even me, if I don't check my attitude & behavior. Was my choice of words, harsh, yes, but I'm not going to stand by & continually watch this type of attitude being displayed towards our girls & not say anything. Once again they work hard & they shouldn't be penalized with bad call or a lack of non calls.

Now for those who say look at your team & Coach Dean is the problem, yada, yada yada...since the entire time I have been at LaVergne, he has grown, have I always agreed with his coaching philosphy, No, but he is for the girls. He's going to always have naysayer because he arguably has the best talented team in this area & it always seem they have underachieved. But I will say that it's hard to coach talent, because you want everyone to be happy & sometimes that's impossible because of that green-eyed monster, called jealousy. You have to have a firm hand, look at Pat Summitt & her struggles with her talented team. Not comparing Coach Dean to her or LaVergne's team to Tennessee but just making an observation.

I had the privilege to walk as the girls practiced yesterday & the things that might have caused them to lose, they were working on them & it comes down to the girls executing what they practice on in games situation & not get frustrated when it appears things/calls are not going their way. Sometimes that's easier said than done. Once again, they fought back & played hard at the end & came up a little short. My daughter said it best, she said mom, we have to do what we are told to do & if we do so, we will be ok. I love my girl & she's the best kid around, and not only that I love all the girls. They are a very special group of young ladies & just like any parent, you will come to their aide/defense if you perceive they are not being treated right.

Good luck to all the teams tonight.
