  1. That's pretty accurate. The entire defense - and especially the front 7 - for the Panthers have been very good. The seconday also made a lot of progress and performed well against Oak Ridge.

Offensively there is still work to be done, but it's work that is doable.

Powell wrapped up spring practice last Friday. Everybody in Knox County has to be done by this Friday since finals begin on Monday.

Actually I think Monday is "review day" and finals begin tuesday

  2. You are correct. District 3 winner Halls will host the runner up from district 4 and the district 4 winner will host district 3 runner up Karns.

The winners of those two games will go on to the Spring Fling.

Did they do away with Sub-State? I thought the winners of the region games played each other and then they played a sub-state round and then on to Spring Fling.

  3. I've not been able to see any spring practices yet. I was wondering if any Halls fans have and how are they looking. They have a long tough road replacing all those seniors lost from last year.

Halls paper says they scrimmage Kingsport DB Friday the 12th and Red and White game is in a couple of weeks.

From what I understand they don't start practice until tomorrow

  4. Anybody starting spring practice in the next couple of weeks? What scrimmages are scheduled? Around the KIL who needs to replace the most? Who will the North Knoxville Schools Powell, Central, and Halls put under center? Will Bearden find a coach soon enough to have Spring Practice?

Halls Usually doesn't have their starting QB in the spring. Their typically still with the baseball team. I don't know about this spring though. I do know that Halls has to replace all their defense and 8 or 9 on offense, so it should be interesting.

Halls Scrimages Kingsport DB on May 12 at 6:00 at Halls. I don't know of any other scrimages yet.

  5. I know you asked sneakypete, but I'm going to throw out my 2 cents as well. There isn't any reason in the world Webb should have beaten Powell the past 2 years. Here's a couple reasons for my case.

Reason 1: I believe that Webb only had 1 player at 240 pounds this past year and that was that TE, Charlie something(seigers?), they had who was pretty good.

Reason 2: I do believe that Powells O-Line easily averaged 270 pounds across that line last year if not the year before and Webb would've been lucky to average 210. Factor in that '04 football season you had 5 or 6 D1 prospects on Powell's squad I believe. Anyway, this past year instead of lining up in I-backs with 2 tights or the power I, Powell was in the spread formation a lot of the time with Smith split out wide. I know the kid is an athlete but at some point in time you have to realize this is not your best option. If you wanted to take advantage of Watts athleticism I could understand throwing in some option or qb keepers ever now and then to keep the defense honest and of course you have to throw the ball some. But 70% or more of Powells offensive play calls should have been running the ball with the tallent they had in front of those running backs. It wouldn't matter really who Powell put in to run the ball, if you're running behind the big hog maulies up front that Powell has had, you won't have to worry about anything. Shoot, run QB sneak every play and gain 5-10 yards.

Now, the case for Webb winning is they're disciplined and well well coached. They can run that wing-t to a T. They're pretty good at it I must admit. But that is no excuse for Powell to not be able to put points up on the board at will. In my opinion the ball was dropped by the offense for Powell against Webb the last two meetings.

  6. Ok, points well taken and noted. To be quite honest I don't know a lot about the ncaa and really could care less. that subject of jurisdiction was pretty neat to me so I figured heck, why not throw something out there and see what the response is. Anyways, I read in the news sentinel earlier in the week where the Colorado QB lashed out at the NCAA which I'm pretty sure that article would've been an AP article since KNS doesn't write much of their own stuff but that's beside the point...would you care to voice an opinion on that? I kinda think the QB has a point to an extent, but again, I could care less about the NCAA...they don't have a playoff in D1 football so that within itself is enough of a joke for me.

  7. Emfinger's game is in its second year. When I was researching the game for a story Max told me that he gets imput from college and high school coaches as to what players deserve consideration to be invited. There are some pretty good players there this year - players who have already committed to Tennessee, Texas, South Carolina, California, Florida, F$U - among others.

One of the good things is that the week of practice and the game give players who have not yet committed (like Tallent and Watts) to be exposed to college coaches one last time before signing day.

The NCAA has no policy on how many all star games a high school senior can play in. In fact, the NCAA has no jurisdiction over the student/athletes until they actually enroll in an NCAA member school.

I would have to disagree slightly with the last part of your statement there. If the NCAA didn't have any jurisdiction over high school kids then there wouldn't be any clearinghouse or close eyes on boosters who interact with college prospects. Another instance might be where a kid decides to go to the NBA instead of college...he never made it to college, but the NCAA clearly has rules against him playing college basketball if at a certain time he changes his mind on going pro instead of collegiate. But my point is that there is jursidiction to an extent overall. Like recruiting can only be done at certain times for certain different stages of recruiting. To me, those things are jurisdiction.

  8. Just a question? Riverdale had won 28 in a row and ranked 19th in

usa today. Maryville is 82 out of 84 and can't seem to crack the top 25. Why do you think this is?

My humble opinion on that matter is the pure fact that Maryville is in 4A. And although 4A football in Tennessee is typically tougher, they won't get recognition just for the fact they're not in 5A. That's what I think.

  9. That's a nice list PHS. I'd say just take Central, Maryville and Powell's starters and make up some 1st, 2nd and 3rd string teams out of the 3.

There'd be some West kids in their and Hightower from LC too. Lucas from Halls would be on the bubble...

I personally would consider Justin Reese from Halls first and then either Darren Black, Derrick Rhinehart or Dusty Ferguson from Halls before Trey Lucas...and probably I'd say I would think of Vandegriff or Cox before Lucas as well. However, I really don't think any players from Halls are the caliber as players from Maryville, Central, Powell, Hillsoboro, MoWest etc. etc. etc. Kids from those schools should make up the list and any others from west Tennessee that I have no clue about. That's just my humble opinion. Also, I would hope that Gallyon from Powell would get a TON more recognition than Smith...seeing how Gallyon was more active than Smith.

  10. Most of us would pull for the Catz, IF they could get by Maryville.

The two times Maryville has let another team (MoreWest and Knotz Central) go to the state game the past 8 years they have lost the gold ball, and brought shame on the east! JUST KIDDING! :D

    Here's My picks and Hopes

    1A Hampton

    2A Loudon

    3A CAK

    4A Maryville ;)

    5A Oak Ridge

Some long shots I know but I would love all the Gold Balls to come to those schools.

For Loudon to win the 2A ball the Alcoa Tornadoes would all have to come down with Mono and it be during the worst part of mono and then have double pnemonia on top of that and even then I'm not so sure they wouldn't still win it.

  11. ...ummmm....with reguards to the Knoxville area High Schools and changing classes due to area population "adjustments'...is there not a new High School planned for Knoxville?.....therefore, in all likelyhood, leaving the current Knoxville HS's in their present classifications in the future?

And on point: Central has my respect....and I'm old!

Reguards to the Board, (Hi Ron)

    Mapp

yeah, it's suppose to help with west knoxville population but I doubt it will affect the classifications of the schools in west knoxville

  12. Well, then it never gets better probably. One of two things is gonna happen. Maryville, Central and Powell are all growing at roughly the same rate in student body size, as far as I can tell. That means they'd probably all 3 move up to 5A in 2009. So, Central is stuck with Maryville, no matter what happens.

The other thing that might happen is that the TSSAA might slide the scale on what consitutes each division 1A thru 5a, student population wise. If that's the case, Central and Powell might stay in 4A in 09. Someone with more insight into Central and Powell's growth rate and student population size currently could answer that question better...medman...HTV?

Well, I don't know about Central or Powell, but Halls' #of students has decreased quite a lot. I believe they're down around 1100 students nowadays and it might even be less than that. All the rezoning to Gibbs has done that. It's crazy...kids on the other side of maynardville highway that live within the 1 mile "no bus" rule, or whatever you want to call it, have to go to Gibbs even though there within that 1 mile rule. How's that for logic!!! And uh, let's not even talk about the kids starting at other schools that SHOULD be going to Halls.

  13. I could CARE LESS if I stir up the Rebs or not!

The CAVS aren't playin 'em,Sparta is!

I know their ranking is legit. They are absolutely one of the best two or three programs in the state year in year out.

But there's no way you can argue that they are better than Cookeville is.There's no way to prove it! Maryville's schedule is also no tougher than Cookeville's top to bottom.Aside from Central the rest of the region is weak.Throw in Alcoa & WB,that's it.Granted Cookeville is in right now the weakest 5A region but aside from a certain # of 4A teams 5A is still tougher football.

Rankings mean nothing when it's two different classes. Once again it's a FUTILE argument, save it for the Riverdale fans. :D

I agree with everyone else...let's not forget oh Powell, Knox Halls or West and for that matter..Alcoa who is loaded...William Blount who isn't a bad team either really. West is the best team not in the playoffs this year regardless of classification. They just unluckily play in 3-4a. I believe Powell has nearly beaten Farragut and did beat McCallie this year! Correct me if I'm wrong here. Knox Halls has beaten Sevier County which most people seem to have forgotten out here except for Halls fans and I do believe the score of that one was 24-14. Knox West took Mo-West to OT..just another reason to look upon Maryville's schedule as being a LOT tougher than you'd think. This debate should've been over with anyways...Maryville should've moved up for sake of all sanity. But they didn't and they had that option so more power to them. Next time around I don't think they'll have that option. Anyway, Maryville is very much legit. If you think Knox Halls or Powell is a pushover by any means then ask Maryville if those two teams weren't the most physical they've faced this year. And Central, well Central is loaded with tallent. I'm telling you, Maryville is good and there no mistake in it in why they've won 68/70 games or whatever that crazy statistic is. 4A football is just as good as 5A, if not better. Now, I think Riverdale is a step above everyone by all means. It'd be interesting to see Riverdale vs. Maryville, but that'll have to wait at least a few years. They just have it going on there. But overall play for a class, I'd say that 4A is better. That's just my humble opinion though. And by all means 3-4A is the hardest in the state...just ask those chattanooga teams who get tired of playing us in the opening round year in and year out. Chattanooga teams would dominate northeast Tn 4A football, but unluckily for them, that have to play the Knoxville area football teams. Good luck to those Rebs yet again!

Also, I left out that Knox Halls (4A again..I must remind) beat 5a power Kingsport DB in preseason play 2 TDs-0. Just another interesting point and yes I realize preseason doesn't mean anything, but it does to these two teams..believe me.

  14. PVT you know what I'm gonna say.

Well Fairplay I actually got my wish last friday night but it didn't go the way I expected. The first three plays from scrimmage were passes. On the first there was a screw up in the routes and both receivers were in the same area so that was a busted play. The others were overthrown except for the Dayton grab at the start of the second half. He seems like he adjusts well on Lucas's passes when he has a clean break on the ball.

I hear we can exploit their DBs so if i've got that info I'm sure Don Ward has. Red Bank has a tough defensive line and have kept opponents off balance most of the year. Their record seems to indicate this so I think its going to be a tough good old fashioned hard nosed game.

I think what you see is what you get with Halls. I don't expect any changes but you never know.

Haha, ZCAR, well, some people got their wishes the first three plays...I do believe some people were probably screaming at the coaches why don't we run the ball!! I imagine that was the case as it usually is. Sadly, this is the way a lot of Halls fans are. They jump aboard ship when it's sailing, but if a little water gets on board they're quick to point it out. Let the coaches do their thing and everything will be fine. But, as you can see, passing is not the best option for Halls. Love Lucas to death, but it's just not the best option for Halls.

I'm interested in what games krakatoa saw both teams play in. Halls' only really bad game this year in my opinioin was Powell and even then, them red devils didn't give up. Even in the Maryville game the boys didn't quit until the final whistle. Halls is extremely physical as anyone who has played them in recent weeks can understand. You wake up saturday and you're going to be sore. And this is something that has been missing from Halls football. Lineplay that is downright physical. You better have some depth in the D-Line or kids who have incredible endurance because Halls will physically wear on you. I'm not saying that they're incredibly great upfront, they've just got some kids who will put the helmet on you and to go along with that they've got size. They're quick for their size as well and although they're not a fast team, they can hit you with quick hitting plays that are hard to react to. The next thing you know the fullback is in the secondary and you don't know how he got there on defense. It's deceptive and the play happens really quickly. The wing-T is tough to defend, no matter who you are. I hope the red devils prove me right, I'm gonna go with Halls 31-17. Sorry if i've already posted a prediction..I don't really remember doing one.

  15. I agree but he is just the fall guy. The whole situation has gotten way out of hand. Fulmers ole' boy system has runa-muck because the program has failed to progress and the great game progresses. If the alumi are satisfied with canning sanders alone while phil is allowed to bring in another ole boy then get ready for a few years of dismal seasons.

Look at the kids UT is trying to get into camp on the "O" side of the ball. UT did not want Thompson, Stewart, Cassion Jackson, Prugh and other local outstanding High School players through the years, but the kids they got from other places have not produced. Everyone who watched Riggs in H.S. knew he would be a bust. But UT bought into the press and his family planted hype. I don't know about you but I am glad Maryville, Central and some others have well coached teams to watch because that UT product is not worth my ticket money. Go reb's.

Amen FBE...UT is aweful from a production standpoint of their athletes(excluding the genious mastermind Chavis). Amazing how this "non-existant" state of Tennessee tallent is having success across the country at big name schools, yet UT WON'T recruit them or they simply ask players to walk on. I don't blame players in this state going to other places where they are offered a free ride for college. Tuition nowadays is getting to be ridiculous for some families. I wander if all those salary increases for the great coaches we apparently have has any connection to tuition hikes...cause we all know UT is accepting more and more kids nowadays...or so it seems.

Anyway, on to Maryville. Is Tallent going to play? If he doesn't play and White County's players that have been hurt play it could get interesting. From what I understand about White County they're not such a bad team. They've just been unfortunate with circumstances. I thought that someone said their stud running back was playing defense but not offense yet. So, will he play against Maryville on O? I don't have much of an idea about who White County really is, but I have a feeling that this game will be closer than some would think. I hope I'm wrong, but I just got that feeling for some reason. Anyway, go get 'em rebels from a red devil fan. Good luck to all 3-4a teams.

  16. I think one of the snaps hung in the air a little. But the interior line allowed the blocks. It was like a jail break. O'Conner had no chance. I think SD #5 did the damage both times. I thought the special teams looked good after the Powell debacle against Lenoir City & Maryville. So we just have to firm it up a bit. Also, and I may be wrong, these problems occured in the first half and I think some players sat out that normally might have been in the punt formation. Any one know for sure?

that's what I heard too. wonder who and why.
