  1. Anatole France once said, if 500,000 people say a dumb thing, it is still a dumb thing. I am not thin skinned, if I were I would not have lasted 35 years, but I read so much on these posts about how an official costs some team a win. I take a lot of pride in working a game. The vast majority of officials do what they do because they love the game and want to give something back to the game. As far as us working for a particular school, does anyone really think we make calls with that in mind? If you do, you are wrong. One place in the rule book states that, no official should make a call thinking that it may impact the contract with the school for which they are working. If one bad call causes a team to lose, they probably did not deseerve the win anyway. Maybe I came across a little harsh, but, remember the old walk a mile in my shoes. As an aside, every high school in the United States plays under the same rules. The press box guys always says, the game tonight will be played under TSSAA rules. Not true, all games are played under National Federation of High School athletics rules. Are there some bad officials, yes. But there are people in every vocation and avocation that do a bad job. I don't like to be painted with a broad brush. And I am not complaing about having to buy anything, I do this because I love it. I would do it for free.

It's good to know there are some officials out there like you. We need more like you

  2. canefan72 I have officiated high school football for the past 35 years, starting in GA and then moving to TN, I have called four state championship games, two in each state, and this definition of a fan is shared by most of my peers. You can spot a hold or a clip on the two yard line while sitting at the other end of the field, but you cannot find your car in the parking lot after the game. We have to pay to join the TSSAA and the local association, then, buy the uniform and equipment and pass a rules test. We work scrimmages for free and we attend meetings weekly and discuss our games. We are watched by state supervisors at each game and given a report as to how we did. We are the ones under a microscope, not the players. We don't fumble. drop a pass, hold, clip, block below the waist, etc, but we catch the when we call the penalties. We don't care who wins, we just watch the action and react accordingly. Having said all that, some officials are like cops. Some have a flag and a whistle and some cops have a badge and a gun, and they think the fans are there to see them work. That is true in society too. The best job we can do is to make half the fans happy, but we don't care how many of you are happy, we are there to do a job, and with little pay. But the ones of us who have a passion for the job don't care how much we get paid, we love the game. So, if you are ready to quit complaining, I suggest you join the state and local association, buy the equipment, pass the test, and get on the field. Otherwise keep your comments to yourself, you don't have the first clue. Most of you don't know the difference between a yard line and a clothes line.

Very well said this stuff is good to know

  3. They are coming this afternoon to film another pep rally in our gym. All the stars are supposed to be here and they get about 300 of our students to be the cheering section. They usually give away prizes and stuff through the night. Kinda neat to see the whole production thing get organized. They brought in some lights that go on the end of our courts that are easily the brightest I have seen.

    What school are they visiting??

its coming on monday for only this week.

I love the show and the movie, but everyone should read the book

Yes the book and movie are pretty darn good :D

  4. I was thinking Satterfield might shoot for 100 this year :thumb:

    Thats cold

I agree about this issue. It was a dead thing, and Kraeger doesn't mention the fact that the TC players didn't have much to work with as far as bench depth. Satterfield mentions it, but I don't think he was trying to cover his tracks by any means. The article shouldn't have been written. You have to let us play. We're kids. We're not there for workouts, practice, and meetings week in and week out if we don't want to get on the field and succeed. Even the freshman team feels that way. They could've filled the front page better with something stupid like Channel 5 did Sunday with the Titans players' cars. We don't care what they drive. They make millions to stink it up. We're kids. It's different.

    good point

  5. True!

Do you know of any huge comebacks like that in HS football? Just wondering...I don't know of any but it may have happened before.

Last year Pope John Paul II HS was playing at Goodpasture and were down 49-35 with 50 seconds left when Goodpasture kicked off. We scored a TD with 4 seconds left to cut the lead to 49-42. Kicked an onside kick, recovered it, and scored the game tying TD with no time left on the clock. JPII ended up winning in OT 55-52. It was called "The Game of The Year" in Middle Tenn..... It was exciting..

I found out our TX friends kids graduated from John Connally High. I've never been to any other parts of Texas except Dallas (airport), and a trip years ago to see family in Waxahachie.

It's getting pretty good now. It will be interesting to see if the QB ends up dating the coach's daughter

  7. I don't think teams should be punished. We have this same discussion every year. Many times coaches do all they can - quit passing, play everyone, etc. but they can't tell their kids to go out there and NOT play when they have the chance. I know in AR they have a rule where when one team is up by 35+, they play with a running clock. Maybe TSSAA should institute something like that.

Thank goodness this does not apply in college, otherwise Michigan State would have lost that game this weekiend where they were down by 35 points...

  8. Well it looks like the Rebels didn't show up tonight they had some god plays and it was there senior night and you know it was hard on all of the seniors cause its was their last senior night game and their last home game at THE REBEL stadium we will miss them all ......

Do you know who was they best friday night on the Rebel football team who made the plays...

    Go Rebels

You guys had some HUGE lineman. That #61 for you guys is pretty darn good, is he a senior?

  9. Undoubtedly, Courtney Coffey is a rare athlete. The kind of athlete you only see once or twice a decade. But for the life of me, I do not understand why everyone is so high on Courtney Coffey as a wrestler!

Throughout his career, Courtney's power and quickness have enabled him to dominate lesser athletes and slightly better wrestlers. However, he has yet to be tested by an opponent who either may be less athletic but a far superior wrestler, or who may equally athletic and a better wrestler (which would have happened had he gone to the Junior Nationals). For that reason, I am sold quite sold on Courtney as a wrestler.

But in all fairness to Courtney, his wrestling skills are still largely undeveloped as he has not had any decent coaching, which makes his success (2X DII State Champion) even more admirable. (It is a shame that he did not attend Ryan, MBA, or even Ensworth where he would have had an opportunity to learn a great deal more wrestling.) So, if he decides to pursue wrestling in college, I would expect him to improve greatly under an experienced coaching staff that will further develop his wrestling skills to accompany his athleticism.

I look forward to watching Courtney this season and, should be pursue wrestling, in the years to come because his raw wrestling talent coupled with his athleticism gives him great potential.

In three years, and correct me if I'm wrong Steelerwhit, Coffey is 136-8 and two State Championships!!! Those numbers speak for themselves...

  10. I know they are totally different sports. Can you compare last year's basketball class against this year's football? Who has the best potential in the college game?

Brandan Wright, Thad Young, Wayne Chism, Willie Kemp, Barry Stewart, Marquis Weddle, Pierre Niles, Josh Bone, DeQuan Twiley, Jeremy Williams, and Joe Watkins.

    vs

Harrison Smith, Rae Sykes, Chris Donald, Golden Tate, B.J. Coleman, Seth Skogen, Todd Campbell, Anthony Anderson, Rod Davis, Alex Watkins, Dennis Rogan, John Stokes, and Chris Walker.

Which class is more talented? Even though different sport, which ones will produce more individual talent in college?

    The football class!!!

  11. So did my wife, and that just further let me know thats its more soap opera than sports. I thought it was ok until the sprints through a pond, uphill, in the rain. Then they guy making out with his best friends girl, and everybody thats seen the show knows the situation with his best friend. And then, just for a some extra added drama they bring in the thug Qb who looks like he will never buy into the coach's over the top approach. I think NBC is trying to compete with Dancing With the Stars, so they have to make women interested in this show. Thats why its a soap opera with a football theme, I'm waiting for the new QB to find out he's the coach's long lost son.

I bet The new QB ends up "hooking" up with the coach's daughter :thumb:

  12. Tate is listed by both Scout and Rivals services. Rivals classifies him as an "athlete" and gives him a 4 star rating--5.9 points with the top for that category being 6.1. Scout service ranks him as a wide receiver and has him as the 31st best wideout recruit. Both give him good marks for speed and hands. He isn't rated 5 star because of his height.

ESPN ranks him as the #17 High School player in the country!!
