  1. PJP II 1 - ST AGNES 0

SARAH HICKAM SCORES OFF A HEADER FROM A CORNER TAKEN BY SARA GALVIN WITH A LITTLE MORE THAN 13 MINUTES LEFT FOR GAME WINNER. POPE HIT THE POST ON A PK ABOUT 8 MINUTES LATER FOR ONE OF THE FEW OTHER OPPORTUNITIES DURING THE GAME. MOST OF THE ACTION BETWEEN THE 18s DURING THE FIRST HALF AND PRIMARILY IN THE ST AGNES DEFENSIVE END DURING THE SECOND HALF. A WELL PLAYED, STRATEGIC GAME FROM BOTH SIDES THAT ENDED 1-0, WITH POPE GETTING THE 1 BREAK. CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH TEAMS AND CONTINUED SUCCESS AT STATE FOR POPE.

  2. tcar ... can you provide a summary of the game? I was thinking Father Ryan might have the better chance of winning. Bad thinking I guess.

Extremely fast-paced game by both teams in the first half. PJP II contolled the majority of play at the outset and had a couple of decent (not great) scoring opportunities in the first 25 minutes. I believe fatigue from the previous two games (OT win vs Ensworth and PK win vs Brentwood Academy) began to catch up with the Lady Knights. Father Ryan controlled the momentum for the remainder of the game. In the second half, Father Ryan missed wide left and wide right on two separate shots from inside the box (one from about the 6) and had a couple of other opportunities from outside the 18 that went high. PJP II scored with a little over 10 minutes left. Given only two opportunities in the second half, PJP II made the second one count. The first was a shot on goal, taken by Caitlin Carter, from outside the 18 on the right, to the opposite left corner that glanced off a Father Ryan defender. The deflection slowed the ball just enough for the goalie to reverse direction and make a diving save that forced the ball outside the left post. The second, on a pass from Caillin Harris to Caitlin Carter just over midfield, that was chested past the two Father Ryan defenders, carried down the middle to just outside the 18 with the ensuing left footed shot drilled into the right corner for the eventual game winner. Father Ryan kept the pressure on for the remainder of the game, but were unable to find the net. It was a well played game from both sides and all the ladies need to be congratulated. Based on season records alone, one would have given the edge to Father Ryan; however, the teams in the Middle are very equal this year in speed, athleticism and size and every game was competitive. It made for some very exciting soccer and if the regions started over again tomorrow; I'm sure you would see a completely different result. The old saying, "On any given day" truly applies to this year.

    FATHER RYAN 0

    DII MIDDLE REGION FINAL

Caitlin Carter scored lone goal with a little less than 10 minutes left. She ran onto a pass from Cailin Harris just over midfield and chested the ball past two defenders and outraced them to the 18 and fired a shot into the lower right corner for the game winner. Congrats Lady Knights.

  4. What does anyone know about Good Counsel MD? They obviously have a very good club to have beaten the 3 teams they did. Were these 30 minute games or longer? Any commentary reagrding any of these scrimmages would be appreciated.

These were all full-length games. The three teams are from the greater DC catholic conference. The conference includes teams from Maryland, DC and Virginia. St. Johns and Good Counsel (both large co-ed schools) are perrenial soccer champions from the conference. Holy Cross (mid-size all girls school) has hired a new coach and has set goals to move into the upper echelon of the conference. St. Johns has a player that has had playing time with one of our National teams (not sure of age). The teams were well coached and played with discipline. They capitalized on their opponents misques and their conditioning and bench strength were noticeable advantages. The Tennessee teams were game; but it only takes one breakdown in a tight game and that's what appeared to happen in the Good Counsel and St. Johns games. The scores could have been a little different if we (TN) had capitalized on our opportunities and not given up the typical late game score. It was certainly an advantage for all the teams (MD and TN) to play against this caliber of competion in preparation for their upcoming seasons. Excellent soccer to watch (win or lose).
