1. Congratulations to the Eagles - that's 5 of the last 6 years for Region 6 5A to reach the finals. Saw the Bruins play both teams this year with pretty much the same result. Sonny Gray is the real deal and you have to be impressed with Indy's sophomore QB Alex Heckman getting the job done. It should be a great game.

  2. Good gosh this thread got off track worse than some of the ones I used to be a part of..... /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Okay,I was told that yesterday was the cutoff to apply for the Oakland job and the Eagleville job. So.....does anyone have a list of either school's candidates?? I cannot confirm this by any person in authority, but was told that OHS had around 30 applications turned in and that a HC with a ring from a prestigious school in Williamson County was seen on campus. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

Hmmm, I wonder if its the same Will Co HC that insisted this year's football banquet must be in December instead of January like it usually is. /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

  3. Good luck to both teams on a injury free game this Friday.

Where is Jaron Norfleet at now?

Jaron is a true freshman at UT Chattanooga, where he's playing defensive end. He's seen some playing time, logging a handful of tackles so far this year.

Expect the Bruins to give it their full effort tomorrow. Everyone is healthy and there may be some new wrinkles to the scheme. Also, I'm not so sure that having a bye week before a big game is such a positive thing. Brentwood always seemed sluggish coming off the bye in seasons past. Thankfully they've done away with it this year. Good health to both teams and lets settle it on the field.

  4. QUOTE(5A football fan @ Feb 23 2007 - 06:23 PM) 826386357I just hope the Bruins have a successful 2007... good luck

Same to ya 5A. You were much improved last year - hope that trend continues. Good luck against the rest of Region 3.

Enjoyed our series the last 2 years. Wish we'd play more eastern bracket teams that aren't from Rutherford County.

  5. QUOTE(rapbwood @ Feb 8 2007 - 02:06 PM) 826363728I was lurking around the Bruins Gym during a basketball game on the weekend. Where do they hide it? I was going to tell it not to worry, it will be back home soon in the comforts of Ravenwood.

It is a very impressive trophy. It's a football carved out of wood and polished, sitting on a pedestal base. I forgot history of the origin of the wood to carve the ball but one of the trees in the community gave its dear life for it. It is much, much more impressive than the $20 dollar piece of tin plate gold trophy the state hands out at the championship game.

Rap, you were lurking around the wrong part of campus. Since it will be some time before you get to see it again here's a picture of it in its current resting place. Its more a motivational tool than a trophy. Plus there's no room in the trophy cases thanks to the all of the other state championship trophies.

Also, CoachT should give you and 5AFootballFan a commision on my Plus membership, which you guys forced me to buy to take back control of this Brentwood thread!

I didn't see any news on college signings for the Raps. Any word on Cleckner, Thompson, Snoeyenbos, Laidlaw, Williams, etc.?

    Can't wait til spring practice!

  6. Congratulations to the 5 players from Region 6 that made it. Hard to believe that 2 of them didn't make the All-region team. And only 1 player from the top 3 teams in the region makes it, but 4 from the 4th place team. Maybe this should be called the all-playoff team. I guess I should serve some cheese with these sour grapes!

  7. "I NEVER in a million years would have thought I'd say this, but Ravenwood fans have stooped lower than their neighbor Bruins on arrogance. "

Arrogance? OUCH! Mc9, are we that bad? A little sympathy please. Whereas the rest of you only have to put up with R'wood once or twice a year, we get it year round. At least we got it year round. I would hope that the Finals loss and this year's 19-16 victory in the Battle of the Woods will silence the "We still own you" chants that were endured all last year.

Was at the Final game and like everyone else, I was amazed that the team ran to R'wood side of the field. I'd been reading the posts and knew that emotions were running high, but never would of expected that. I didn't see any obscene gestures from my vantage point but I did see things thrown out of the stands at the players on the field. Somehow that mom in the newspaper failed to see (or mention) that.

  8. So the verdict here is Offense win championships? I don't think so. As you advanced through the playoff, the offensive teams are better and capable of putting the ball into the air as well as running on the ground. Yes, the defense will give up some points with these teams but how many points would they give up if the defense was not top notch. Defense wins championships and by the looks of it, Ravenwood is the only one left playing.

I do think Dickson County had a very good defense this year as well as the best football shoes for playing in mud.

That's my point. They always say, D wins championships (whoever "they" are). You beat Oak Ridge last year with defense (and that fake punt by T.C. that was probably the best play I saw all last year). And in my opinion you're going have to play like that again. Not saying you can't. If you look at the non-blowout final 5A games this century, total points scored have been 21 or fewer. But who knows? As crazy as this post-season has been, it may end up being a +70 point track meet.

  9. I saw all 5 of the above mentionoed teams at least once this season, and I saw several multiple times.

Franklin was the most consistent. I only saw them play poorly once (against Pettigrew from Independence).

In defense of Dickson County's defense, they would've shut out Franklin if it wasn't for a missed 20-something yard field goal.

Ravenwood's D plays big when it needs to.

Brentwood? You should've seen the Smyrna game. Smyrna scored at will. I realize it was week 1, but come on. Stop somebody.

    Independence...no way. Good offense though.

I think any of the first three can provide an argument for why they're the best, and I wouldn't have a problem with any of them being called the best.

You should have seen the Brentwood Ravenwood game. Both defenses played to a 13-13 tie. The Bwood D stoned them in OT forcing the field goal. The Rwood D collapsed on the first play yielding a 10-yard TD run up the gut-game over. Now the Raps have given up 28 or more points a game to their last 3 playoff opponents and have needed the O to bail them out.

Based on points allowed per game its Franklin, Dickson, Bwood, Indy, Rwood.

  10. I'm sorry to break into this lively discussion of dinosaurs, birds of prey and we're better fans than you, but is anyone in the Raptor nation concerned about the defense? Its amazing to be in the finals after giving up 28 or more points per game for the last three games. That's putting a lot of pressure on a young quarterback to score enough points to keep up. There's only so many 21-yard TD passes you can throw on 4th and 6 before the odds catch up with you. Based on our record against both teams I'd have to say Smyrna, but there's something about Rector and his magic kool-ade that makes the Raps hard to beat. If their defense can keep it close I'll have to go with Ravenwood. Should be a great game.

  11. i think alex holling and norfleet are both good football players however i dont think either are on the all state leval-holling is a very fast very quick tail back-ive seen him run drills up at western while on recruiting trips-however his a small kid and i think their are other tail backs in our region and many others in our state with the same speed a quickness with the size to go with it-i don thave alot to say about norfleet-it just seems that other than his great size-he doesnt seem to have the same raw ability as others in the region-he also played on a D that was at best the 3rd best in the region-others played D on teamas where tackles were much harder to come by

Norfleet was All-state last year and has virtually the same numbers for 2006. Tackles are harder to come by at Brentwood because the coaches determine them from game film and are pretty stingy in passing them out. Tackles are broken down by solo and assists. Judging from the stats in the Tennessean it looks like most teams don't differentiate. He may not be All-state again this year, but judging from the number of Div 1 schools that are scouting him, it's unlikely he'll have to pay for his college education.

  12. Congratulations to HL on a great win. Of all the teams I've watched walk off the field after a game, I don't remember a team more emotionly distraught than the 2004 Warriors that lost that heartbreaker to Brentwood in round 1. So it was nice to see them get the win. Unfortunately the 2nd most dispondent team I've witnessed was the bunch of Bruins that walked out last night.

Have to agree with FTT2 on the kicking. The first thing I thought when they waved off the first field goal was that the uprights seemed unusually short. The players on the field thought they made it but the stripe-shirted guys who have the best view in the house disagreed and thats all that matters. The Bruins had 5 chances to score in the kicking game during regulation and only converted 2. Remember that its the kicking GAME and not the kicker, as it takes a snap, a spot, a kick and competent blocking to have a successful try. No excuses, just an observation.

Great game Warriors and good luck the rest of the way. Remember the last 2 teams that beat Brentwood in the playoffs (R'wood and Franklin) made it to Murfreesboro and one of them came away with the gold ball.

  13. Sorry to hear that DD is leaving-not surprising since they've gutted things over there. I'll try to check it out and report back. If it wasn't for the Sports page, the Tennessean would be out of business at my house-and I'm not talking the sports page for Williamson AM, Brentwood Journal, or Franklin R & A. Those aren't worth the paper used to print them anymore.

Check Brentwoodfootball.com for the Bruins' contribution to the all region team. Looks like almost the entire defensive unit made it. And not bad having 4 players-of-the-year!

  14. JD has been mentioned on Coach T as being interested in Franklin Co., Antioch, and Mt. Juliet. Someone told me he's still listed as AD at Ravenwood???

Mantooth is the new asst. principal at Huntland HS in Franklin Co.

Daniels was the first AD at Ravenwood but resigned from that when he went back to Brentwood to be OC and to watch his son's last 2 years with the Bruins.

  15. What ever happened to former Mt. Juliet High School QB Butch Hamby? He played under Howell Flatt at MJ and went on to sign with MTSU before Boots got there.

I know a Butch Hamby who owns Southern Creations, a landscaping company in Murfreesboro. He's probably your guy. Athletic looking my guess is mid to late 30s.

  16. Allow me to share this final thought so you understand my perspective....I was a member of the committee that hired Joe Gattis in Oak Ridge in the late 80's.......at no time did it ever occure to me..... (that by having an impact on which coach was hired...or because I coached most of the kids on the 91 team in their development years.....) never occured to me or anyone else in the Ridge that I somehow deserved or wanted any credit for the championship in 91....(didn't matter how much credit there was to go around)......Nobody indicated that Coach Young, Coach Hale, Coach Martin, Coach Armstrong...or anyone else, put their stamp on that program.....Joe...his staff and players....got the credit they so richly deserved.

Lots of Class.....unlike some BHS folks who seem to think the credit should go elsewhere...just because they had been a coach or that they had an impact on who was hired....! The only credit goes to the Raptor organization.....period

Once again, Mr. RavenCat, have a good off-season. Remember to keep weeding out those weaker ones and by all means, keep drinking that kool-ade.

  17. Bitterness....I don't know him....we've been here two years and RHS has won 3 out of the only 4 games I've seen....why would anyone be bitter.....you're "Jack Ball" is doing fine...keep up the good work

Credit...I guess that's the problem....seems like there's always someone from BHS that wants to take credit or share their thoughts regarding the Raptors......to say Daniels put his stamp on this team is an insult to this staff and the players.......

Daniels....I think he was a coach here....and maybe he did leave a playbook behind....so what? I've been around football a long time....I don't recal Daniels being the original architect of the Spread Offense. I also understand he teaches at Ravenwood.....and that means what? Saying he put a stamp on this program is like saying the constructions workers that built the team dressing room deserve credit.......

Nest years team will be different....as will be all of next years teams.....and they may or may not run the same offense....I guess we can all look forward to Daniels putting his stamp on that team as well.....because he coached here a few years back....and his check comes from our school.

Brentwood turned in equipment weeks ago.....as hard as it may be......move out of the light.....quitely plan for next years "Jack Ball" and allow this Ravenwood team to take their due....!

So far every post from a BHS fan has started with congratulations to the Raps and thanks for bringing the gold ball back to Brentwood, Williamson County and Region 6. They have all been answered with replies of this guy "didn't do squat" and "spitting garbage". Ravenwood finished in the state's top 5, just as Murphy Fair and the Tennessean predicted they would this preseason so lets put the "no respect" card away. Calm down and enjoy your kids (and coaches if you must) accomplishments and stop worrying about what the Bruins fans are saying. We'll see you next September 15. Until then have a great off-season.

  18. Daniels had squat to do with this team.....give credit where credit is due....the coach is Rector.....for the past two years....Daniels is at BHS.....

Is it bitterness towards Jack Daniels leaving RHS coaching or is it just not knowing the facts? Tell me you don't notice that Rwood and Bwood run the same spread offense. We like to call it "Jack Ball". As I remember it Jack was 1st head coach and athletic director at Rwood before turning over the football coaching to Rector and staying on one more year as AD. He's at BHS at 3:30 for football practice but still draws his paycheck teaching at Ravenwood. Saying Daniels had no influence on the Rwood program is like saying you'll be the same team next year without Jennings, Williams, Marshall, Becker and the rest of the seniors. Enjoy your gold football and understand that there's plenty of credit to go around.
