  1. I saw that Independence is looking for another head coach. That means that in its three years of existence, it will have three different coaches. I know the first guy took another job (at Science Hill, I think). What happened to this coach?

Also interesting that Ravenwood, Franklin, and Independence have had so much turnover (and Centennial to a certain extent). Is there something wrong with Williamson County?

    Just wondering.

I hear that the Centenial job has been offered to John Boucher the former Ravenwood girls coach. He would replace Brian Kelley who has been attempting to fill both the boys and girls job the last 3 years.

I don't know anything about the Independence job other than the coach they hired last year was very young and relatively inexperienced and they didn't seem to progress much this past season.

On the other hand, the Franklin & Ravenwood problems are a result of administrations that treat all of the girls programs (soccer would be the exception)as necessary evils that they have to endure. The Franklin basketball job has been open since last July yet, as of last week, there had been no effort to find a replacement. Coach Shane Pantall agreed to fill in this year after the late Summer and abrupt departure of Shawn Stephenson but Pantall has stated several times that he would not continue as the coach next year. Everyone has been aware of his position, yet the administration still has not taken the initiative to find a quality replacement.

Ravenwood did the same thing last year when they fired Coach Boucher late in the school year and then waited until mid June to hire the next coach. The principal reportedly had no clue that teams could practice during the Spring or Summer adn felt that there was no hurry to fill the spot. The new coach, by the way, seems to be very good and really improved the Ravenwood team through the season.

  2. If a player transfers to another school, she is ineligble for one calendar year. Ravenwoods last game was 3/1/05 last year.

Metroman, Where did you get your info regarding Ravenwood's last game in '05? I've been trying to find it but haven't found a reliable source. Also if her last game was on March 1, doesn't that mean she will not be eligible until March 2nd?

  3. Who cares about this game, the winner will get pasted by the Hillsboro/Antioch winner, and then will get drilled in the substate. Real 6AAA championship game is tonite pitting the Burros v. the Bears.

I would suggest that at least the players, parents and students from Brentwood & White's Creek care about this game tonight. The winner will finish at least second in the region and guaranteed to move on to the sub-state round. I would also remind you that Hillsboro made the mistake of overlooking Franklin last week and as a result they are forced to play Antioch tonight instead of in the finals on Wednesday. I doubt the Lady Boros will over look Antioch tonight and that could be a problem for Antioch. Loser goes home here as well.

  4. Can they play tonight?

To my knowlege the girls that transfered to Brentwood this year would not be eligible to play until later in the week.

How would you find out what date Ravenwood girls played their last game in 2005? The following day would be when they are allowed to participate.

Eaglesfan, Can you elaborate on your accusation of recruiting by Brentwood? Be careful about what you claim unless you know something to be a fact!

  5. I have heard a lot of discussion about head coaching jobs opening up. I am fresh out of college looking for an opening.

I have been told Marshall Co. (boys) is open as well as Culleoka (girls).

Is this true? And are any more opening up??

The Franklin girls job will be available, but why anyone would be interested in dealing with Willie, Todd, Marlon is beyond me. This would be the sloth leading the dictator, leading the puppet. Great group of girls and very supportive parents but a do nothing administration more interested in themselves than in the kids.

  6. The player in no way is an all american.......switched schools for the simple reason she wasn't starting at her school (which is just an average team). I understand the rules states that if the students parents don't have a bonafide change of residence then that kid has to sit out 1 yr. from date of last participation. The schools AD and Principal were made aware and pretty much just blew it off.

There are several cases this year where a transfer was denied elligibility after going throught he proper channels. If the allegation above is factual then the girl and school should be reported. Are you aware that playing a player before she is elligible results in a 2 game suspension for every 1 game she played. By playing her the coach may have really done this girl an in justice.

  7. I have sent my daughter to camps for 9 years. My daughter went to a point guard camp last year. While there are some camps that are better than others, I am not a proponent of camps. It has been my experience that a one week camp teaches a great deal of information and the level of retention is not very high.

If I was going to spend $595.00 for this camp, I would get weekly lessons for her instead. It was my experience that my daughter learned more, and put more into application, by having weekly individual and team lessons. At $50.00 per lesson, that would be twelve weeks of teaching and working on skills instead of a 4 day blast of info that you have to remember on find time to work on afterwards.

It took you a while to come to this conclusion ( 9 years? ). Besides where do you find quality lessons for $50 an hour. Most of the better teachers are more than that, aren't they? I would be interested in your recommendations for a good instructor.

I have sent 2 daughters to point guard college. It is very intense and jammed packed week, and there is more info given out than can possibly be retained. As the camps info says, it is not for the casual player, but for the player that wants to "think" the game. If you are looking for shooting instruction or skills development this is probably not for you. As CPBG06 says private lessons are probably a better investment. PGC teaches a mental approach to the game with half of the 14 hour days spent in the class room. Your player needs to be serious about learning the game and mature enough to absorb the benefits of the PGC. My girls learned a lot from the camp and it made them both better players in high school.

  8. I hear they are doing the touraments different than in the last 3 years. What exactly is going on with it? I've heard Girls play Thursday at top seed gym. Boys play Friday at top seed gym, then boys and girls semi's on Saturday at Overton... yes?

You are correct. The consolation games for 3rd & 4th place (boys & girls ) will be played on Monday (2-20-06 ) and Championship games will be played on Tuesday night (2-21-06). All at Overton High.

Region tournament will then start later that week at Glencliff , I think.

  9. as i stated earlier with sims not in foul trouble turnovers will be limited. i watched the harpeth game at brentwood and i recall #34 having a lot more turnovers that sims as well as against franklin. sims played great against franklin and on any given night she is probably the leading rebounder. i am positive she has division i potential. she is a young player and is still learning but brentwood present and future is bright. sims at the pt. #12 i think anderson on the wing tidwell down low (who is very undersized for her position) shumacher on the wing and maher down low. if they play well together i say brentwood by 4. and brentwoods future is very bright next year with stphanie hall stepping it up in the lineup. brentwood will be dangerous. by the way does anyone know when stephanie hall (last year's leading scorer in williamson county that transfered to brentwood) is elgible to play and if she does will she start? I predict:

1.sims (the most athletic on the team)

2.hall (can create, shot, and drive)

3.schumacher (can shoot, drive, and dish the ball)

4.tidwell (second most athletic on team)

5.maher (she has had really good games this year and she will be stronger next year)

good luck with that line up williamson county, region, and state contenders; and the bench is deep with this new freshman that has been dressing out. Who is she? anderson and #34 coming off the bench, shooters on the bench, drivers, and athletic girls.

Interesting perspective valid remarks. Not sure I agree as Simms is leading the team in turnovers for the year, but she definitely belongs on the floor and she is the most athletic on the team. She needs to learn to be patient and let the game develop.

Steph Hall is eligible after March 1st, I think, so B'wood will have to go deep into the regionals for her to play this year. With her and all but 1 player returning next year they, should be very good.

Freshman's name is Hannah Phillips and she certainly has a bright basketball future ahead of her.

  10. i do not think that word upset would be appropriate when talking about brentwood and hilsboro. yes hillsboro is ranked in the top ten and brentwood is no where near the top 20, but i think that brentwood is a better team than hillsboro. hillsboro has an amazing player in mooney (who will most likely be miss basketball this year) and the other players play off of her. if brentwood plays the type of defense that they played before and can score. (those of you will recall that the game was tied 20 to 20 at half and brentwood only scored 9 points the third and fourth quarters combined). also a huge factor missing was sims for brentwood that was out most of the game due to foul trouble and if i am not mistaken who eventually fouled out. she is only a sophomore and she has a bright future and is the only point guard that brentwood has so when she is in foul trouble that really hurts the team when they have to use backup people. but i think if sims stays out of foul trouble and sims, shumacher, anderson, and tidwell have a gret offensive night, brentwood wins a close one at hillsboro on feb.13.

I think you would have to still consider it to be an upset although it wouldn't be considered a major one and not out of the realm of possibility. Hillsboro is the defending district season champion, until someone beats them they are still the favorite. Don't forget that Hillsboro's defense had something to do with BHS only scoring 9 points in the second half.

You also forgot to mention that BHS's # 34 missed the entire game due to a concusion. Often BHS is more productive on offense and has fewer turnovers when she runs the point than they are when Simms is at the top. Don't get me wrong, I think Simms is a terrific player, but maybe she should be on the wing so she can attack the basket easier.

  11. It is one thing to compare Franklin and Brentwood and bring up the winning achievements of both teams. We are not going to bringing up rumors of the past. What coach in their right mind would elbow a player of the opposing team? From my point of view it sounds ridiculous and I think that this subject should be put to rest just as quickly as it got started. I play for Franklin and many of you already know my sn through the soccer message board. I have played for him for three years and he has respect for any player that goes out on that court and gives it their all. Let's leave the past in the past shall we?

Sportschic, I thought it was in the past. Before you brought it back up!

  12. I def. agree that both teams are playing in a WEAK district. If Franklin plays the way they are capable of, they can win. The last time they played, Franklin's defense inside was really bad and their starter, Harrison, wasn't allowed to start for some reason. Brentwood really doesn't have any strong talent & they ARE NOT UNDER-RATED... if anything possibly OVER RATED!!! Franklin is definately capable of winning the game tonight.. it just depends on if they show up ready to play.

As for Metroman's comment about B-wood's winning history- that is why Duke is hated, but that's not why everyone (hates) B-wood so much... i mean, everyone hates Ravenwood just as much. It's B-wood's attitude after winning. Like two years ago when Dougger claimed Coach Pantall had elbowed her so hard in the ribs while shaking hands that she had a bruise!!!

As for their winning history and all, those years the District 11 & 12 were down like District 11 is now. And if I remember correctly, whenever B-wood has gone to state they have been put out in the first round. Anyway the their past achievements have nothing to do with how well they do this year.

Sorry but I missed where Brentwood was rated at all much less over rated, unless it was in the district standing and those cannot be disputed. Now Franklin could very well win tonight, but that still won't change those standings.

I don't know that all the district 11 AAA teams hate Ravenwood as they do Brentwood. I suspect that is mainly a Franklin sentiment.

As for Pantall, are you sure that he didn't do it?

  13. Ravenwood swept Overton, Overton swept Hickman County, Hickman County beat both Ravenwood and Centennial in there first meetings. Centennial beat Ravenwood in there first two meetings, but then lost to Hillwood, then beat Franklin.

    So its a mess.

If there are no more surprises (Centennial gets beat by Franklin, Overton gets beat by both Brentwood and Hillsboro, Hickman County loses to Hillsboro, Ravenwood loses to Franklin), it makes a bit more sense, but not much. That would put Overton at 9 losses, Centennial, Ravenwood, and Hickman County at 8 losses.

Now if Hickman County beats Centennial and Ravenwood, they are the four seed.

Then if Centennial beats Ravenwood and Overton, they'll be the fifth seed and Ravenwood will be the sixth seed and Overton seventh. However, if Centennial beats Ravenwood and loses to Overton, Ravenwood is fifth, Overton 6th, and Centennial 7th.

If Hickman County wins out and Ravenwood beats Centennial, HC is fourth, Ravenwood fifth, and the winner of Overton and Centennial is sixth.

And this is only if Hickman County wins out. If Hickman County loses to both Centennial and Ravenwood, it creates a totally different scenario. If, after that Ravenwood beats Centennial. Ravenwood is fourth and the winner of Centennial Overton would be fifth. If Centennial beats Ravenwood, then Centennial is fourth, Ravenwood if fourth, Overton is fifth.

If Ravenwood beats Centennial and Hickman Co, then they are fourth. Then if Hickman Co beats Centennial and Overton beats Centennial, then Overton is fifth, Hickman co is sixth and Centennial is seventh. However, if Hickman County beats Centennial and Overon loses to Centennial, Hickman co is fifth, Centennial is sixth, Overton seventh.

If Centennial beats Ravenwood and Hickman county, Hickman beats to Ravenwood, and Overton beats Centennial, I believe Centennial is fourth, Overton is fifth, Hickman county is sixth and Ravenwood is seventh. But if Centennial beats Overton, Centennial is fourth, Hickman County is fifth, Ravenwood sixth and Overton is seventh.

This may not be accurate, but be thankful I wasted twenty minutes to get this close. It will be much clearer tonight after the Ravenwood Centennial matchup. Also, if there is some upset along the way, either these teams beating Brentwood, Franklin, or Hillsboro or these teams losing to Independence or Hillwood, it all goes to pot.

Here is my one prediction. Independence will beat someone they shouldn't and screw it all up.

WOW! I thought it was messed up now I'm conviced. Thanks for putting in the time. It will be interesting to see if any of these pan out. I don't want to be the one to go back at seasons end and decide which senario came to pass.

  14. It appears the first three spots in 11AAA are decided. While not guaranteed to be in this order Hillsboro, Brentwood and Franklin will finish in the top 3 spots.

The 8 & 9 spots appear to be locked up by Independence and Hillwood. How do you see the 4,5,6,&7 places finishing? I thought Centennial would get the 4 seed but they have lost some games they should have won. Currently, Overton is in 4th place but I don't know that they can hang on until the end. Ravenwood and Hickman Co. have some good wins and are playing well now. Whatcha think?

  16. I'd like to make a comment about the officiating after analyzing this game. Of the three officials, one made 90% of the calls and one made no calls. The other guy got a few calls in if the main one didn't beat him to it. The main official made a lot of traveling calls which I just didn't see. One call against Brentwood happened right in front of me at mid-court and a Brentwood supporter really let him have it. I was looking right at the girl and didn't see her move either foot. Several traveling calls were made against Page and I didn't see what he was seeing in those calls either. The fouls were about even until Brentwood started fouling in OT to put Page at the line. What bothered me was the one official running over to make a call in front of another official. Don't the officials have a zone to call like under the basket or outside? I've heard fans say "That's not your call" - is this true?

Your comment on the officials is quite accurate IMO. Having watched the replay however, the travelling calls against Morton early in the game were valid. She was making what I refer to as the Michael Jordan move where she quickly shuffles her feet before she puts the ball on the floor. He got away with it few others do, and she did correct the move after a few of the calls. I don't think she had a travel called on her in the second half. I also believe she was a huge factor in the Page victory. A few of the other call were also accurate but not as obvious. They did miss the double pivot that Spencer made late in the fourth quarter which could have changed the outcome of the game. I thought I saw it when it happened but confirmed it on review. The two carrying calls against Brentwood would have been allowed in any other game I have seen this year. I realize they can't get it all right and Page definitely deserved the win.

I believe the officals do have assigned areas of responsibility on the floor but they are not confined to only that area if they see a violation. Many fans believe the area they are responsible for is the area that is closest to them. I don't think this is true, however. Maybe some of our referee friends can clear this up.

    Thanks again for your reports.

  17. Superior coaching & discipline wins again

I'm not sure you can fault the coaching, but BHS on court discipline is definitely an ongoing problem. Too many trying to do it all on their own insead of staying with in the concept of the team & silly uneccesary fouls at very inappropriate times.

Congratulations to the Page girls, however, They played well enough to win, despite all the turnovers.

  18. You were surprised they made the regions? Did you think Hillwoood was going to knock them out, lol. They play in a week 3a district, and the region is week as well. They never have to play teams like Lawrence County, Columbia, or Shebyville to get to state and they have only been there once since I can remember and they chocked in that game. They always have above average talent and should have more to show for it that one game in the Boro. That is what's surprising.

BHS plays where and who they are told to play and generally tries to play top competion in their out of district games. No doubt their schedule could be tougher but geography places them where they are and traditionally they are one of the top teams in the district & region.

And yes, last year, given the returning talent I was surprised they made it to the regional tourney.

Regarding how many time they have made it to state in their 10 year run to regionals, that answer was to the question about why the district opponents all disliked Brentwood. I suspect they would have preferred to get to state more often, but I'll stand by my answer in the context to which it was given.

  19. You are too kind. My heart is with Pageman, but I still think Brentwood wins in a blow out. Never close.

I don't think Brentwood has the maturity to hold a big lead and beat anyone in a blowout. They have consistently jumped out on teams this year and let the opposition come back to make a game out of it. I'm not sure the Page team with very good senior leadership ever lets BHS get a big lead. If they do I don't know that BHS can keep it.

  20. Who did they surprise last year?

I think Brentwood surprised Franklin last year beating them twice during the regular season. Franklin returned 4 of their top 6 players from a region semi-finalist team in '03-'04 while Brentwood had graduated their top 5 off their state tournament team the same year and played a bunch of Freshmen & Sophomores, 2 returning seniors and a transfer senior point guard. Franklin got their revenge in the district tournament and went on to upset Hillsboro for the tournament championship.

Brentwood did make the regionals again which also surprised many '04-'05 preseason predictors.

As to why everyone dislikes Brentwood, It may have to do with the fact that they had won the district several years in a row prior to last year when Hillsboro won it, and they have been to regionals like 10 years in a row, sectional 4 times out of those 10 and made the state 1 time 9('04-'05). People tend to dislike teams that consistently beat them.

  21. I say Page's other four will help Spencer as the Lady Patriots win a close one.

Brentwood and Page have both handled the county schools in similar fashion.

VS. Smyrna, Page lost by 27 points at Smyrna while Brentwood lost by only 8 to Smyrna at BHS and only trailed by 3 with 1 minute to play.

    Both team played Harpeth twice:

Page split but had a point difference of about -18 while Brentwood lost both Harpeth matchups by a total of 11 points.

Looks like this could be a pretty good game with both teams fighting for some Williamson Co. bragging rights.

I say Brentwood narrowly because of home court advantage.

    Good Health to both teams.
