  1. I didn't see any playmakers that were juniors. Could you name some?

Certainly....Ford (4) started a DB..second on team in interceptions, Presley (10) started at bandit, Cleckner (11) started a LB...all region, Ayres (16) started some at WR KR ran back a couple of kicks to TDs....Williams (87) started at DE lead team in sacks, Becker (5) started at SS enough said..sophmore, Lopez (8) kicker all region last year beat Franklin in playoffs...sophmore, Emkes (42) started some at WR great hands..lead team for 1st down catches, Snoeyenbos (60) started RT lead team in pancakes...graded out highest OL, Thompson (68) LT..enough said, Laidlaw (23) 3rd leading rusher...great speed..good hands...

The Raptors are in pretty good hands next year...if they click!

  2. I agree that the championship run this year by the Raptors was a total team effort. However, it was an effort by a team of seniors that have been playing varsity for 3 years straight. That is not a normal circumstance. I'm not saying juniors didn't get playing time, but they'll have a tough time adjusting to starting against the best competition in 5A.

Easy big guy...take a closer look....half of their starting lineup was juniors and 2 10th graders.....and next year will be their 3rd year together

  3. frashod barlow is a junior going to be a senior.

i know this because i played against him in freshman ball two years ago. and by two years i mean three seasons.

i think the independence-centennial game should be very close. the word should is being used because the season has just ended.

here's the way i see it. centennial has no quarterback. barlow is a decent back but he can be contained. the defense will still be tough, and drew kelly--freak of nature--will continue to be a force at defensive end. i see it being close.

ravenwood's underclass has never impressed me that much. well i take that back, some of them have, but not as a whole. cleckner is amazing, as is isaiah williams. cory laidlaw never gets a lot of pub but he's a solid running back. mike becker is a so-so passer...awesome scrambler though. experience definitely counts. joe thompson and luke stansfield are both rocks on the line.

ravenwood should be good next year. obviously they won't match this season's success, but it should be interesting.

region 6-5A always has a way of being a lot better than it looks on paper.

I agree with most of what you said...they actually have 3 starting OL back...Thompson #68...Snoeyenbos#60...and Witherspoon #74......Luke did see some playing time this past year and will be in the mix either at OL or DL..next year...we'll know after spring how well they click.....

  4. I dont care who plays qb next yr they will not be near as good as tc jennings and let me tell you he accounted for a lot of wins for you.

I wouldn't assume that...TC is a terrific QB...granted he made a lot of big plays...he also made a lot of bonehead plays.....he plays best when he's just a little out of control...Becker will be a very different QB...and plays very much in control...runs well...good arm....and a sophmore.....it'll be fun to watch

  5. You have to remember that when we went to Oak Ridge, the ninth grade was still in the Jr High, now its part of the high school, and the numbers reflect those kids. What I meant about other sports, is that, it seems to me, that today, kids will concentrate on one sport if he/she feels that its their best shot at a playing college ball, and kids today seem to have alot more outside interest than just sports, I hope Stanton can bring back the excitement of being a part of High school football for Oak Ridge again, these are just my observations, maybe I'm wrong. But, I will tell you this, Stanton has made every attempt to include the Boys Club kids, and middle school kids in his schedule, trying to make sure they know they are a part of the "Program". I think (hope) this will pay off in the long run.

Didn't know the ninth grade moved to the high school....that would explain the numbers....seems like that would also have a negative impact on the Jr high competition....maybe that's part of the problem with the interest level. Those were some great games...over the years.

I think the boys club connection with this staff will work.....I think nearly all of this staff played there.....I hope it works....appreciate the thoughts!

  6. Raven,

Are you really naive enough to discount the coaching impact on a games outcome? Do you really actually believe that the team with the most talented players is victorious in all instances? The OR coaches had a great year, but on the final night they were not prepared. I disagree with you and your belief that the OR players were not the best in the state this year. It is unfortunate that one team must always loose in the game of football. Both teams had outstanding seasons. I was on the sideline in 75' when OR was outmanned to the player and kicked some tail despite the fact. It was all about coaching that night and it still is. Alcoa has 3-4 D1 scholarship players this year and Maryville thumped them by 21 with none. In most cases the most prepared and best coached team wins, especially in championship games. You can out-athlete teams in some cases even with poor coaching, and I am not saying OR had poor coaching this season, but against great teams you need great coaching. On the final night our players played their hearts out but our play calling and game plan wasn't sound in my opinion. But, as I have said on here before, Stevens will be back and will be better prepared from the experience of this game....count on it.

    Ole Dad

Not at all OD...I don't discount the impact of a good game plan or a well coached team.....I saw very little wrong with the OR coaching.....I think both staffs did some things well...and some things not so well...! Both made their share of mistakes. Ravenwood knew OR would run a trick play in the first series....they planned for a bubble screen...and got beat deep....OOPS!

You just need to get rid of those blinders...the cats weren't even close to the most talented team in the state...which actually 'top to bottom' was Ridgeway....and yes...they were out coached by the Ravenwood staff......by a lot!

I've asked the AD for Ravenwood to try to get the cats on their non conference schedule...that would be fun....hope she can work it out in the near future.

We can only hope Stanton and associates gets another opportunity in 07....I still would like to get some thoughts on where the kids are.....and if that was the senior players on the field for the toss....my gosh...that was over half of a pretty small group of kids.....what's left for next year....there was only about 20 kids left that weren't seniors.....hopefully the ninth grade class will turn out in big numbers next year....

  7. It is WAY past time to stop criticizing the players. The night before the State Championship a friend shared the following with me. He has a son who plays for a high school in another state. After losing in the semifinals these are the words his coach had to share: (the following is quoted...not my words)

"On Friday Nights, early in November, something special happens on football fields all across the nation. Lights cast down shadows of great, monumental warriors, and young men, with the guidance of coaches and staff, prepare to go into battle, in arms with their teammates, their brothers. There is nothing geater in life than the feeling that overcomes you when you step onto the football field during the playoffs. The crisp, cool air; the frost-dampened field; the echo of the band; and the fans, in a wave of colors united in support for their team. Chills, hair-raising emotions overcome every inch of their body, begging to explode, escape with the first hit. For 48 minutes, nothing else matters, this mere glimpse in time is eternity, is heaven. Before the eyes of thousands, young boys become men, graduating into a brotherhood that only a few have the opportunity to be a part of. They become legends, heroes of their towns, and front page stories. Then, in a moment, without notice, or hesitation, their time ends. Their 48 minutes is over. Whether that time is today, or tomorrow, or a month from now...whether it's with a win, a loss, or a championship, it doesn't matter. High school football is a game that can never be conquered, it's a battle that will never be won. Because no matter the greatness of any coach, player, or team, at the end of 48 minutes, it's over. This past Friday, in ****** County, I stepped on the field as a coach for the **** of ***** High School, and all I could think about was the feelings of when I played for the orange and black, memories of greatness long forgotten came rushing back, excitement engulfed my body, and then, in an instant it was over. 48 minutes had once again come and gone. That night I had to watch some of the greatest kids I have ever known walk off the field in tears, overcome with emotion, because that night would be the last time they would put on the pads and battle arm in arm with their brothers. Yes, many of the them, and seniors from around the nation will go on to play collegiate football and perhaps even don an NFL jersey, but nothing compares with the greatness, the purity of high school football. In an instant, boys become men, and even quicker, they once again become boys. That night I watched some of the greatest kids a coach could have struggle to take their shoulder pads off, struggle to unlace their cleats. Choking back tears myself, I watched the greatest high school player I have ever seen, distraught with emotion, refuse to take his pads off for the last time. Next to him I saw a kid that never played do the same. That night, after 48 minutes had come and gone, after the bright lights had been put out, I saw boys become men, and in embracing players, I left them with something that had taken me until that very moment to figure out for myself...you don't have to wear pads, to be a high school football player...For all high school senior football players, I say job well done, you have made your coaches, your schools, your parents, and your towns proud. Go Team!!! - Coach ******"

Let's give these two great teams the respect they BOTH deserve.

    Wildcats: thanks for the memories!!

I didn't criticize a single player.....not my intent. My only purpose was to defend a staff that I've known since Boys Club....this thread seemed to have a single purpose to defame a young coaching staff....I guess there will always be someone claiming to be a wildcat fan that needs to blame someone for a loss. These 'finders of fault' aren't objective enough to realize that there may actually be another team that's more talented...but since there can't possibly be a more talented team....this coaching staff must have done a really poor job......truly unfortunate!

Thanks for sharing the insightful quote...!

  8. I would and could agree with most of your post, except for the comment about the RHS not calling their best game, I did'nt see any pervious games of RHS, but, from what I saw, and those sitting around me, we thought the RHS coaches called a great game, almost perfect game.

As far as the numbers of players, you have to remember that football is not the "ONLY" sport at OAK Ridge anymore. alot of kids focus on one sport and thats it. (Baseball, Basketball, Track, and Soccer)

Also the population of Oak Ridge is about 33,000, but, I would say at least 50 to 60% of that is retired folks, the student population at Oak Ridge is not what it used to be.

There's always been other sports....and I understand that the school numbers are up.....when I graduated in 67...there was about 1,800 kids....#1 son graduated in 89...I believe there was about 1,100 kids...#2 son graduated in 92 and there was about 1,000 kids....the TSSAA site listed OR at about 1,450 kids this year...in 92 they had several kids with duplicate numbers...every year....I was really shocked to see so few kids in Cardinal & Gray

Regarding coaching....I guess no will agree that the cats players weren't the best....and they lost because of poor coaching only....One example: #4 son is the Raptors RT (number 60)..his point to me after the film breakdown...he was credited for 7 pancakes...12 between him and the RG (#52)...the most they've had any one game this year...he was shocked actually...he said we hit them and they just went down...his point was that the cats weren't very athletic up front.......that has little to do with coaching ...maybe the last coaching staff...this cats team wasn't very fast...or very strong...they were in the correct position...just couldn't do anything when they got there.....the Ravenwood kids thought the Cats would be more athletic.....outside of #1...he's a player

My only point of view came from the kids on the field

  9. Raven,

That's hilarious. How many points did Ravenwood score in the final 43 minutes of the game? 0! And didn't gain many yards either after the 2 scores. If they could run so easily on OR then maybe the would have scored. If they had this potent passing game then the would have used it to break the game open. The fact is that OR was ill prepared on offense but was able to stop Ravenwood even while defending the passing game that never came. I think Stevens learned a lot and will be better prepared in the future but don't forget that the final score was 14-7 and Ravenwood was glad to get out with a win and OR was in the game until the last 2 minutes.

    Ole Dad

OR wasn't the only team with a very new...young...and unexperienced staff. The 'trickeration' early caught the Raptors staff with their collective shorts down....not for that play...the mighty cats might not have scored at all....The Ravenwood staff certainly had a small touch of 'playing not to lose' ...it was still a terrific game.....we'll have to agree to disagree whether or not OR was in the game after the first quarter.....the cats only got past midfield...what 3 times after the first quarter....

Good players can make up for poor coaching

....The RHS staff didn't call their best game that night.....just a little tight after they took the lead. Remember that Stanton has already won state once....none of the Raptors staff has ever been past the second round....they really didn't know what to do at times....listening to the coaches discussions after the game....was at times comical....but they had the player talent to make up the difference...the cats come up short on the level of talent...and the depth of talent..

Unfortunately, the cats didn't stop the Raptors much at all....holding calls stopped more drives that the cats did....they had more holding calls that night than the rest of the playoff games combined....but I'm sure they were accurate calls...the game crew was from the Knoxville region....and they just don't make errors...

My big question is still...where are all the kids.....why did the cats have so many players going both ways?

  10. [

Sorry guys....they really were just a better team.

They only happened to be the better team that particular Saturday night. I believe given the chance to do it again you would see a different ending.

Good morning catmom...actually, my only point of reference is #2 son...he's seen both teams play and frankly was surprized the game was that close(he's pure wildcat by the way). The cats never saw their passing game...it was so easy to run they didn't bother to open it up...#4 son who's the RT on Ravenwood (based on speed and strength) rated the OR defense as the 3rd or 4th best they faced this year....Franklin #1, Ridgeway #2, then OR and Brentwood about the same. Top to bottom Ridgeway was the most athletic but Franklin played the best as a team...

The Ravenwood players can't stop talking about #1....they tell us that Spencer was the best player they faced this year...but pretty thin talent wise after Spencer. The Cats seemed to have more kids going both ways this year.....was this just my imagination....? and what happened to the 100 kids that used to walk down the steps....looked like about 50 or 60 players......what's going on there?

  11. I think that is what I just said.

As a Wildcat fan and a Ravenwood fan....this thread bothers me....everyone that has seen both teams will tell you the same thing...it wasn't coaching or effort....as hard as it may be to imagine...the Raptors were just a better team...they were bigger...stronger..and faster .....and more talented. If they played again tomorrow...the result would be the same.

Sorry guys....they really were just a better team.

  12. Wait, you're saying there are kids from California that want to move here to play at Ravenwood?................why.............

Maybe they just like the school colors.....maybe they just want to play for a winner...or maybe their parents just want to live in the developments that make up the Ravenwood district...who knows

  13. Independence players to watch:

    Emory Martin (qb-'07)

    scott pettigrew (rb-'08)

    isaac baugh (wr/db-'08)

    devlin sheffield (lb-'07)

    josh grigsby (ol/dl-'07)

    jared haney (ol-'07)

    chris darnell (wr-'07)

    independence should get wins against

page, hillwood, centennial, northeast, ravenwood, and columbia.

    losses against

    franklin, siegel, brentwood, dickson county

6-4. maybe the playoffs. this is at best. i can see ihs going anywhere from 4-6 to 8-2. good luck eagles, hit the weights hard this offseason.

    early prediction:

    franklin

    brentwood

    dickson

    ravenwood

    independence

    centennial

    columbia

    northeast

Let me share a Ravenwood thought.....underclassmen played in every position in nearly every game....the new QB did play in every game on defense and several games at QB....new TB ran the ball in every game but the last one...the only two positions open are a DE & a Guard.....lots of big game experience......and I understand that about a dozen kids from Southern Cal have expressed interest in being Raptors....we don't know what positions they play yet...if this team clicks next year....I think they'll be fun to watch

  14. wait, wait... DII's second rate? I seem to remember a scrimmage early this year in which... oh yeah, MBA whipped Ravenwood. Who was that other team that beat Ravenwood? Oh yeah, BA. Who won the 5A title? OH YEAH! RAVENWOOD.

Easy big guy....I was at that scrimmage....and it was just that...a scrimmage. Ravenwood uses scrimmages to try different lineups...kinda like most good (sorry..championship) teams do....the lineup at that scrimmage wasn't the regular season lineup....only about half of the starters were playing together. How'd MBA do this year anyway?

  15. I cannot believe the ingratidue of some of the Raptor posters.

I guess the bitterness still exists that he wanted to coach his son his last two years at BHS and his offer of help to Ron Crawford.

For those who are historically challenged, may I remind you that Coach Daniels was your first AD and head coach, was hired by Pam Vaden and was instructed by Pam Vaden to get the program off the ground. He was somewhat bushwhacked into coaching by her, as he just wanted to be the AD. He STARTED the program from scratch. He hired Brian Rector and the staff, with the full intent of turning it over to him after the first two years. That was accomplished and the results speak for themselves.

Now to question his role, involvement, or his pride in seeing two teams he was deeply associated with win state championships is just plain petty.

I remember seeing him leave Brentwood's championship game with tears in his eyes. Do you not think he felt similarly proud and a particular joy for the players and coaches after Ravenwood's victory?

Whether or not you agree is not the point. It doesn't change the facts. But what is sad is to think that those before you bear no credit for the foundation of success you have today.

Allow me to share this final thought so you understand my perspective....I was a member of the committee that hired Joe Gattis in Oak Ridge in the late 80's.......at no time did it ever occure to me..... (that by having an impact on which coach was hired...or because I coached most of the kids on the 91 team in their development years.....) never occured to me or anyone else in the Ridge that I somehow deserved or wanted any credit for the championship in 91....(didn't matter how much credit there was to go around)......Nobody indicated that Coach Young, Coach Hale, Coach Martin, Coach Armstrong...or anyone else, put their stamp on that program.....Joe...his staff and players....got the credit they so richly deserved.

Lots of Class.....unlike some BHS folks who seem to think the credit should go elsewhere...just because they had been a coach or that they had an impact on who was hired....! The only credit goes to the Raptor organization.....period

Bitter.....what's the deal with you BHS guys....why do you always assume the Ravenwood community is heatrtbroken that he left.....in my two years here, I've never heard anyone indicate that they wished Daniels was still here.....and I've never met the man. I do think it's really cool that he wanted to spend his sons last two years of high school ball coaching his team. I can respect that!

I understand he did hire Rector...and may have actually hired some staff members...certainly not all of them.....and most of the kids like him...I'm sure he's good people. ....that's not my point at all.....TO SOMEHOW INDICATE THAT HE HAS PUT A DANIELS STAMP ON THIS TEAM IS INSULTING TO THIS STAFF.

    and that's my only point

  17. So far every post from a BHS fan has started with congratulations to the Raps and thanks for bringing the gold ball back to Brentwood, Williamson County and Region 6. They have all been answered with replies of this guy "didn't do squat" and "spitting garbage". Ravenwood finished in the state's top 5, just as Murphy Fair and the Tennessean predicted they would this preseason so lets put the "no respect" card away. Calm down and enjoy your kids (and coaches if you must) accomplishments and stop worrying about what the Bruins fans are saying. We'll see you next September 15. Until then have a great off-season.

(and coaches if you must)....even in your "let's all be friends" dribble....you still can't find a way to respect this staff.....truly unfortunate!

  18. Congratulations to Ravenwood, you guys were excellent and your fans and players showed alot of class. In my opinion football is a simple game, it comes down to blocking, tackling, and running; Ravenwood did all three of these better than us Sat. night. I tip my cap to the Ravenwood Raptors, Congratulations!

I hate to see either team lose for reasons that should be obvious to anyone paying attention...The Cats had a great year....congrats to Stanton and the entire Wildcat organization...he was a terrific hire....I'm proud to be a Ridger and just as proud to be a Raptor

  20. Is it bitterness towards Jack Daniels leaving RHS coaching or is it just not knowing the facts? Tell me you don't notice that Rwood and Bwood run the same spread offense. We like to call it "Jack Ball". As I remember it Jack was 1st head coach and athletic director at Rwood before turning over the football coaching to Rector and staying on one more year as AD. He's at BHS at 3:30 for football practice but still draws his paycheck teaching at Ravenwood. Saying Daniels had no influence on the Rwood program is like saying you'll be the same team next year without Jennings, Williams, Marshall, Becker and the rest of the seniors. Enjoy your gold football and understand that there's plenty of credit to go around.

Bitterness....I don't know him....we've been here two years and RHS has won 3 out of the only 4 games I've seen....why would anyone be bitter.....you're "Jack Ball" is doing fine...keep up the good work

Credit...I guess that's the problem....seems like there's always someone from BHS that wants to take credit or share their thoughts regarding the Raptors......to say Daniels put his stamp on this team is an insult to this staff and the players.......

Daniels....I think he was a coach here....and maybe he did leave a playbook behind....so what? I've been around football a long time....I don't recal Daniels being the original architect of the Spread Offense. I also understand he teaches at Ravenwood.....and that means what? Saying he put a stamp on this program is like saying the constructions workers that built the team dressing room deserve credit.......

Nest years team will be different....as will be all of next years teams.....and they may or may not run the same offense....I guess we can all look forward to Daniels putting his stamp on that team as well.....because he coached here a few years back....and his check comes from our school.

Brentwood turned in equipment weeks ago.....as hard as it may be......move out of the light.....quitely plan for next years "Jack Ball" and allow this Ravenwood team to take their due....!

  21. Congratulations Raptors on bringing the Gold Ball Back to Brentwood again!

I know your fans and supporters took a lot of guff from OR on this site; with predictions of doom and gloom, and a general "who are they?"

Couldn't stop the run, they said - and you did.

Didn't have the years of championships - didn't matter

Don't have the toughness - tough enough

Don't have a line or a defense like OR - you controlled it

You were the superior football team Saturday night - when it counted

Let it also be stamped that Region 6-5A football IS the force in the top classification in the state. Three different teams in four years in the finals, two gold balls. Jack Daniels with his stamp on two championships.

No more to be said-again, Congratulations from Murray Lane.

Daniels had squat to do with this team.....give credit where credit is due....the coach is Rector.....for the past two years....Daniels is at BHS.....

  22. It's obvious you can't even count. 75, 79, 80, 91 is not 3. Name another school who has won state championships in 3 decades not 5 like the Cats and soon to be six. You have no clue. A football newbie! Is Alabama, Penn Sate, Notre Dame Dynasties? Learn some football and then post.

    Ole Dad

Actually....1975 would be 30 years ago......just to clarify..how's the weather in Fla.

You guys know where I stand on both schools......wasn't Dynasty a TV show?

  23. I wanted to come on this board a congratulate coach Stevens and the rest of the staff but somehow this thread has turned into some kind of monster.

Way to go coaches! You did exactly what I expected. Coach Stevens you're the same great person I knew when you played for Oak Ridge. Bringing in the Miner's, Adams and Spratling was right on. Coach Sanders, you got more Gold Balls than them all. You know what it takes to build a championship team. Coach Layton never thought I'd say that, great season. Coach Lewis and Jackson I really never knew you two too well. Thank you for taking the boys back to state.

All of the coaches are great role models and people. I knew when I saw Coach Stevens over the summer and he said that it was important to get as many of the players on the team onto the field during games he was on the right track. He also said that he wanted the players to get a different perspective after high school and see that there is more than what is inside the bubble that is Oak Ridge. That is very important. Way to go coaches! Congratulations on a brilliant season. Now go ahead and put that cherry on top!

Sorry about the cherry...but I couldn't agree more....they'll be back
