Yes this process is moving slower than I would have expected

Why? Low pay. Low budget thanks to the Rotary milking the programs revenue. Foul smell. There are other negative things...

Positives: the players and being toward the top of the classification numbers wise.

Does anyone know how many total football playing schools we had in 2009 when they went to these classes in comparison to now?

June 2008 Board of Control Meeting Minutes from:

    https://tn.milesplit.com/articles/18620

    4. Classification plans to be considered in Division I

    A. Present plan – (Classification 2005-2009)

Rationale:  Keep things as they are.

    B. Three-class plan is used for football district alignment with AAA being split into two classes (5A/4A) and AA into two classes (3A/2A) for football playoff purposes.  Class A remains in one class for football due to the large number of non-football playing schools.

In football (Class AAA) the top two teams from each district (16 districts) would qualify for the playoffs for a total of 32 teams.  The upper half (by enrollment) of the schools in AAA would be 5A and the lower half would be 4A.  The 32 teams finishing 1st and 2nd in each of the 16 districts would be played in 4A and 5A.  The remaining spots in each (4A & 5A) would be filled with wild cards.  There would be 32 teams in 5A and 32 teams in 4A for a total of 64 in Class AAA.  The playoff brackets would then be set.  You would follow the same procedure for AA (2A & 3A).  The brackets would then be set in the same manner as 2A football in 2007 (needs link).

Rationale:  Places schools in the same districts in F, Bk, B, S…; decreases travel for schools by using three-class plan rather than five; keeps five football classes that have similar make-up to present plan.

    C. 4-Classification Plan – We would first divide all schools in three classifications by enrollment.  All schools in Class AAA (by enrollment) would become the top classification (AAAA).  Class AAA would be all schools in metropolitan areas (as defined by the National Center for Education Statistics) in Class AA and A (by enrollment).  Class AA would be all schools in AA classification outside metropolitan areas and Class A would be all schools in Class A outside metropolitan areas.

Class AAAA would be divided into two classes for football only (same as plan B) for a total of five football classifications.  This could either be done as present (upper half of schools, by enrollment, in eight regions and same for lower half or follow procedure as outlined in 4B).

Rationale:  Provides better competitive equity for AA and A schools outside metropolitan areas.  Research over past 20 years shows that the schools in AA and A outside metropolitan areas have had the least successful programs in terms of tournaments, overall.

In this plan, schools isolated, geographically, would be able to appeal to move to another classification (example-Sullivan North, University School)

    Division II

Classification plans to be considered in Division II

    1. Present Plan – Classification (2007-2009)
Two classes in all sports except wrestling, track, and bowling with schools being split (1/2, 1/2).

    2. Place all 375 schools (entire membership) in three classes by enrollment.  This determines the break for both Division I and Division II.  Then allow all schools the option of going to Division II.

Rationale:  Lets all schools know what class they are in, whether Division I or Division II.  Presently, schools choose Division I or Division II.  Presently, schools choose Division I or Division II, then we set classification breaks.

Note:  Division II would then be two classes (A and AA/AAA)

    3. Have three classes in football and two in all other sports except wrestling, track, and bowling.

Note:   There are many consequences of any classification decision.  This is meant to provide an overall picture of the major decisions that will be made in, hopefully, a concise manner.  Any further questions should be directed to members of the staff.

  4. This comes up in several forum topics. So I did a little research.

Here are the five states above and below us in population. I did NOT account for 6 & 8 man football.

State Rank / State Name / Population / etc

    11 New Jersey 9,388,414 public 5 private 2 total classifications 7

12 Virginia 8,757,467 public private total classifications 6

13 Washington 7,901,429 public private total classifications 6

14 Arizona 7,303,398 public private total classifications 7

15 Massachusetts 7,126,375 public private total classifications 8

    16 Tennessee 7,023,788 public 6 private 3 total classifications 9

17 Indiana 6,845,874 public private total classifications 6

18 Maryland 6,257,958 public private total classifications 6

19 Missouri 6,188,111 public private total classifications 6

20 Wisconsin 5,935,064 public private total classifications 6

21 Colorado 5,922,618 public private total classifications 5

Interesting note, unless I missed something the only state besides Tennessee that splits public/private is New Jersey.

Also realize that not all of these split classes by size. You want to know that research it yourself.

What are the rules for a high school player to transfer from a public school to a private school without an address change?  Public school is three miles from home.  Private school is around nine miles from home address.  Thank you.

Wonder how long before the wannbe NCAA(TSSAA) creates their version of the tranfer portal now that NIL is a thing.

Why would you reduce the number of classes? How many states have less than Tennessee? If you reduce the classes you will have teams playing in lower classes that are playing someone double their size. That’s not fair to the Coalfield’s, Copper Basin’s, Oakdale’s of the state.

id be interested to know how many total teams we had playing D1 in 2009 was as compared to now. Do you have those numbers?  Just curious where we are.

You posed a good question. I was curious so I looked.

  7. I prefer that one of the actual schools competing in the championship hosts the game. Classifications (1, 3 & 5) host on the east side of the bracket and (2, 4 & 6) host on the west side of the bracket. Then alternate each year. A version of this is how it used to be done. The two schools can split the gate evenly between the two of them. We really do NOT need the TSSAA's help to put on OUR state championship games. We assume that we need the TSSAA because they have been around so long, but we do NOT. They do not do enough, well enough, to justify what they take from us.

This suggestion might have been said, sorry I chose not to read through all of this.

  8. Football playing member schools could withdraw football teams from the TSSAA and instead play under the umbrella of a different governing body such as the Tennessee Football Coaches Association. Go back to playing the state championships at one of the host schools like they used to do. Do odd number classifications play west and even number classifications play east, then swap it every year.

Wasn't the clinic bowl the first game of the year at one point?  Is that when the money went to the charity, the championship game, or both?  I'm not sure, I couldn't read the article.

Nashville is in danger of losing the Clinic Bowl to another city.

Tennessee Secondary School Athletics Association (TSSAA) officials will meet later this month to decide if Nashville, Murfreesboro or Chattanooga will host the annual state championship football event.

"Bids are in and the TSSAA Board of Control will meet on the 13th to decide," says Matthew Gillespie, TSSAA's assistant to executive director Ronnie Carter.

Gillespie says the TSSAA doesn't necessarily want the event to move outside of Nashville, but contracts have expired and a review and rebidding process had to be completed.

"When our contracts are up in the cities that host the events now, other cities are then allowed to bid," he says, noting both Nashville and Murfreesboro have expressed interest in hosting both the Division 1 and Division 2 championships.

"Either city could bid for all of it or just one of the games," Gillespie says.

Nashville Area Junior Chamber Charities president Ken Youngstead says the goal is to bring both the Division 1 and Division 2 games back to Nashville.

The Division 1 state championship games are for the public schools and are now played in Murfreesboro while the Division 1 or private school games are played at Vanderbilt in what's commonly known as the Clinic Bowl. The Nashville Junior Chamber is the Clinic Bowl's sponsor.

"The Board will make the best decision for the member schools in our organization," Gillespie says.

Junior Chamber of Commerce officials say relocation would end Clinic Bowl proceeds to help handicapped children at Vanderbilt.

For the past 54 years the Junior Chamber, which organizes and hosts the Clinic Bowl, has given event proceeds to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to provide free rehabilitation services such as wheelchairs, braces and physical therapy to handicapped children. Proceeds totaling $30,150 from the 2004 Clinic Bowl were given to the medical center today.
