  1. Bolivar is very young as well.  Very talented in the skill positions but young ( and small) on both lines.  I think these teams are similar and I hope to see a good game.

BTW, as a poster already mentioned, I don't remember ever playing Covington in football.  I like the new region this year.  It's nice to see some different teams and building some new rivalries.  Should be fun......and Thank God for football season!!!

  2. WOW!!!!!  Some good ole West Tennessee AA basketball talk.  I've been missing that.  Anyway, I'm a Bolivar guy so I don't have to pick a side in the Haywood-Southside debate.  But, I think everyone is making the same point, which I agree with.....................Southside has the better starting 5 and Haywood has the best depth.  It will all shake out over the next 6 weeks.  Should be fun...

  3. True story....

I once saw a coach make a brilliant move when his team was getting blown out. It was an obvious mismatch and everyone in the gym knew it. The better team started out pressing and the weaker team literally could not get the ball past half court. It was about a 30 point lead at the end of the first quarter. Well, the better team started the 2nd quarter pressing and the other coach told his team to GIVE THEM THE BALL. That went on for about 4 possessions. The weaker team would inbound the ball and just hand it to the better team and let them make layups. The kids were like "What?" I thought it was brilliant and the other coach called off his press. There was absolutely no need to press this team and even in a loss, everyone in the gym knew who had gotten outcoached..

  4. Will be tough for McNairy & Southside to go on road and win but these are 2 very good teams and they could pull this off and set up rematches for next week. Both of these teams have played Liberty & Bolivar very well, just haven't been able to finish the deal so if they all 4 show up for region semi's, could be an upset coming up

It wouldn't surprise me if McNairy and/or Southside won on the road......also wouldn't surprise me if Liberty and/or Bolivar lost in the regional tourney. From a talent perspective, all four teams are pretty close and neither is dominant like Bolivar and Liberty were from 2004-2007...

  5. The HC took an admin job. This used to be a proud program that has recently fallen on hard times. Anybody have any word on this opening? Do they have anyone in mind?

I think its doubtful this is an in house, rigged deal like South Side was.

I think they need a basketball coach too. Anyone know what's up over at JCM?

  6. I am not from Tn., so I am not familiar with certain names. Who is this Mr. Green who has 3 state championships you are referring to please?

Coach Terrell Green....Liberty Technical High School's Asst Coach. He's been an assistant on 3 state c'ship teams and many feel like he would make a great head coach.

  7. Coach Green from Liberty, would be an excellent choice for this job.....He has 3 state championships and 1 runner up on his resume. The kids would respect him as their coach. He would truly have an understanding of the kids backgrounds and surroundings, and that's hard to find in coaches today. He would be more than a coach, that is what I respect about him the most.

I thought he would get the Liberty job last year..

  8. why arent anybody talking about haywood they are loaded with talented. Jamarcus Comage clearly could be a all state. watch out for him this year haywood state champs

Ehh.... Haywood hasn't done much recently. But I do agree that they have some talent....Sorta like Fayette Ware. Both have talent every year, but can't seem to put it together.

  9. I saw all but the first 2 games of the MIAA Jamboree -- Day #1. Here is how I'd rank the teams:

    ----------------------------------------

    1) Ridgeway -- Most dominant and impressive offensive line play that I saw, all night long! Completely manhandled Melrose's defensive front, ramming the ball down their throats, AT WILL... Passing game = non-factor, but not necessary; defense was not as impressive as its OL, but still managed to make Melrose one-dimensional (pass)...

    2) White Station -- defense was solid vs the Run but got absolutely GASHED vs the pass! Offensively, they ran and passed consistently but was plagued by untimely turnovers. Offense appears a bit behind its defense, at this point, but still managed to move the ball successfully.

    3) Kirby -- the QB was very poised and as a sharp as a tack, except for one ill-advised pass (INT) into double-coverage. Their WR (#1) had hands like Velcro! That kid's a baller. They consistently moved the ball thru the air but could not punch it in, once in the Red Zone... Run-game = poor... Defense = weak. They were aided by WS' drive-killing turnovers.

    4) Kingsbury -- (Note: opponent was BTW, so I'm still not sold on Kingsbury). QB and WR are a deadly duo! The QB was deadly accurate, especially with the deep ball.....Defense was swarming and stunting a lot. They seemed to get out of position a lot, but BTW did not have the personnel to take advantage of it...

    5) Melrose -- They might deserve to go below Craigmont, except Melrose's QB has the ability to keep his team in ballgames.... Still penalty-plagued; Defensively = the WORST that I have EVER seen a Melrose defense perform! They need a whole lot of work... Running game was suspect, only 1 good run. Otherwise, RW shut it down... I honestly sense a very long, frustrating and below-average season for Melrose...unless its defense improves DRASTICALLY!

Melrose...Wow, how the mighty have fallen (or so it appears).

    6) Craigmont -- Ho-Hum sort of team. Self-destructed very often on offense... Nothing was special about them at all, although they kept Trezevant's offense in check all night long (Trezevant scored off a defensive fumble-recovery).... Like Kingsbury, Craigmont did not really play a stout team, IMHO. Thus, take Craigmont's defensive effort with a grain of salt!

    ----------------------------------------

As for Day #2 of the Jamboree, tomorrow night...I'm not sure I'll be able to attend, though I'd love to see East, Whitehaven, Mitchell and Woodale.

What's going on at Melrose? Is this just a down year or has the talent run out in Orange Mound?

  10. as far as the schools they are trying to make them better but how can you do it with 50% teacher turnover every year? tough place but great basketball. top 5 all time imho.

    1. terry tippet

    2. vertais sails

    3. jimmy adams

    4. tim morgan

    5. wes henning

Coach Tippet is great. His White Station teams were as fun to watch as a college team.

  11. I had been hearing on and off all summer about a middle school coach possibly getting the job but never believed it. I had heard nothing about Jarrett Jones until today.

This hire is baffling to me. I am a big fan of J Jones. He was the best player on the best Chester County team from probably the last 30 years. Jones can still ball and jump out of the gym...kid can get his elbow above the rim and he is only about a legit 5'10.

What Baffles me is the Liberty Job is one of the top AA jobs in the state and to turn the keys over to a 24 year old with no head coaching experience is what I don't get. Nobdody knows how well Jones may or may not be as a coach, to many unknowns. With this hire I see Liberty going through some struggles and eventually flamming out in post season. I think Jones will one day be a fantastic coach but to expect him to come in from the jump and think Liberty will not skip a beat is not practical. I don't think State is realistic at this point even though they will still have a ton of talent, led by Anthony and Barnett.

Gutsy hire.......but then again, so was Dexter Wms a few years ago.
