  1. Heartbreaker for the Bulldogs. Transfer from Santa Fe kept them in the game. Missed free throw late was huge. Still got one more year against the public's to win one before they get kicked in the Privates!

Yes, that was a great basketball team.  People that watched the entire tourney thought that perry co had the best team in all classes. 3 pt shooters and the big man on his way to play for bobby Knight were awesome.    CA loss in soccer and football were also to public schools.  Funny, public schools beating a private. So it can be done, just not in Maury Co?  That is a public problem.   Tell us about your schools accomplishments

State final 4 and two Mr. Basketball finalist in the past 15 years. Our school is so small we don't even have a football team, but the team our school co-ops with won the 2010 state championship. In the fact the quarterback of that team left CA in middle school to play for a MCPS.

One title, along with  finals in soccer, softball, and  basketball. Semis in football.  That softball final series featured 3 amazing ladies that went on to play for the lady vols.  The basketball  finals loss was to a small town public school, perry county.  They have nice collection of  state championships!

Again 1 title and yes we all remember that epic beat down in the state finals vs Perry County.

    Why don't they leave now?

Well it's obvious, Carey and Co. will be seniors next year and they know they'll have another shot to make a run against the public schools. After he's gone the talent level drops off a cliff. Same in football, next year's senior class and their best player Landsdell have a better chance to make a run against the public schools than the privates like themselves.

Now with CA out of the way can Maury County address the real issue? To many small schools! Tennessee has moved away from multiple small unit schools. Being in the very bottom of enrollment there is no way Hampshire and Santa Fe can compete across the board in Single A outside Maury County.

Beside Mt. Pleasant none of the Maury County Boys high school teams have won a single region game since Cully did with the Columbia transfers back in 2008-2009. The failure to win a region game by all this local teams had nothing to do with CA.

It's definitely time to make a change!

Another note: CA will struggle across the board in sports for a few years but once a few Maury County athletes transfer there, with the financial aid, they will be fine in the main sports. (football, basketball, baseball and softball)

It's amazing how all these private school people have so many solutions to public school issues. It's obvious they know what their talking about with all the state championships CA has won over the years....oh wait they've won one, in baseball, in 1994.

Check with Summertown, they have a formula

Yeah losing to a team for a third straight time this season and by 21 in the district championship is one heck of a formula. CA beat Richland by 22 in the district championship, what about Richlands formula?

Congrats everyone. You all can take off your diapers and stop your crying.

I predict this will have a worse affect on all small MCPS in the end when more and more student athletes grow tired of the lack of support from the admin, AD's who won't and don't put in the work to insure all sports programs are successful and the ridiculous bad coaching so the students parents pull them out for CA when they see the importance that CA puts into the athletic programs.

Right, so how many wins did CA's Jr high team win this year? 1 or 2? Must not have put in the work, right? Bad coaching? AD not supportive of Jr high team? I predict CA is going to get their clock cleaned once their in Division II. Have fun going to Nashville and Hendersonville for district competition! I'm sure parents are going to sign their kids up quickly for that! At least y'all have plenty of buses! Passed one today going to Pulaski!

  8. FYI:

    Dear CA Family:

The administration of Columbia Academy has recommended and the Board of Directors has approved a change related to Columbia Academy athletics. Beginning in the 2019-2020 school year, Columbia Academy plans to compete in Division II (the private school division) of the TSSAA. The most significant and immediate change with this move is that, in 2019, receiving need-based financial aid will no longer cause a student to be ineligible for varsity sports. While we are excited about the future of CA athletics in this new environment, we want to address questions you may have as we enter this new era together.

    Q. Why are we making this change?
    A. This change has been under consideration for several years. The changing competitive landscape in this area and across the state has made it increasingly difficult to justify continuing to compete in Division I. The benefits we once enjoyed in this division - playing local teams and enjoying local competition - have all but disappeared. Ultimately, we want to compete in a league where we are welcomed as partners. At this time, we feel we can best accomplish our school’s mission by competing in Division II, and we're ready for this transition.

    Q. Does this change mean we can give "scholarships" to athletes based on their athletic ability?
    A. No. Under TSSAA rules, all financial aid must be need-based. Need is determined by one of the TSSAA approved third-party agencies that reviews all financial aid applications and determines financial need.

    Q. Does joining this division mean we can recruit student-athletes?
    A. Contrary to popular assumptions about Division II athletics, the answer is no. Under TSSAA rules, athletic recruiting is prohibited for ALL schools. The TSSAA By-Laws states, "Athletic recruiting is prohibited. Athletic recruiting is the use of influence on a student or the parents or guardians of a student, by any person(s) directly or indirectly associated with the school, to secure or retain a student for athletic purposes."

    Q. So if we can't recruit or give athletics-based scholarships, what does this change really mean for families of CA athletes?
    A. In short, it means that varsity student athletes and families who cannot afford to pay full tuition may be able to qualify for limited financial assistance. In the past, this assistance would have disqualified them from playing sports at CA. In the past, siblings of varsity student-athletes could not qualify for financial assistance. Also, parents of varsity athletes could not hold a part-time job at CA. Further, last year the option to do work study was eliminated for varsity athletes. None of these restrictions will apply in Division II.

    Q. How much financial aid will CA offer, and can the school afford to do that?
    A. CA limits financial aid (only available to non-varsity athletes) to a maximum award of 50% of tuition regardless of need. We currently plan to continue this practice for both athletes and non-athletes after moving to Division II. We believe it is important for families to be willing to sacrifice with a financial commitment for their child to attend Columbia Academy. By limiting the financial aid offered, the school's budget will not be significantly impacted because of the revenue gained from additional students. We will also reinstate the opportunity for work study for varsity athletes who need assistance, which could also help to offset tuition costs.

    Q. What will travel be like in Division II?
    A. Travel will be increased for our teams, but not to unreasonable locations. Our new district opponents will most likely be in the Nashville/Franklin areas. Some postseason play may require longer trips.

    Q. Will we still be able to play public schools if we join Division II?
    A. Yes. Some public schools may choose to continue competing with us, but we won't be competing with them for championships.

    Q. How competitive will we be in Division II?
    A. One of the board's strategic goals is to have a "consistently competitive, Christ-centered athletic program." We are very confident in our ability to be competitive in Division II. We have invested the resources and the time into preparing for this change. While athletic success is about more than just wins and losses, Columbia Academy views athletics as a tool to help us accomplish our mission of shaping the lives of young people. Several of our teams already compete very well against schools in Division II, and we are confident of and committed to our continued athletic success.

    Q. Is this decision going to fundamentally change Columbia Academy?
    A. No. Ultimately, our mission is at the forefront of all that we do. Our mission states, "Columbia Academy is committed to serving its students so they master skills, knowledge, and character appropriate for them and their future while becoming Christ-like in attitude and behavior." Our top priorities are and always will be the spiritual development and academic preparation of our students. While athletic success is not our top priority, we cannot ignore the fact that these programs can be a powerful tool to help us shape young lives and reach a broader audience with our mission. Athletics also provides our CA family with a sense of community and school pride. This decision to change divisions will not equal a change in our priorities.

I trust that you may have more questions regarding this important decision for our student body. Our administration welcomes your feedback and further questions. This communication today is to help clear up any misconceptions and/or concerns about this change. It is also intended to provide you with accurate information about this change for potential conversations you may have with others outside the CA community.

Primarily, I want you to understand and embrace this new vision for athletics at Columbia Academy. We humbly ask for God to continue to bless our school and our students as we move forward in this new direction. Ultimately, our goal continues to be to glorify Him in all that we do.

Thanks for your continued support. Go Dawgs!

    James A. Thomas, Ed.D.
    President

Well I guess that settles it!! Good riddance!

Like most schools who are 1A, athletes come in spurts because they can only draw from, on average, a 10 mile radius. You may have a good stretch of 5 to 9 year but the pool of athletes you draw from is just too small to maintain year in and year out success over a long period of time. Now if 1A schools were able to bus all over middle Tennessee and northern Alabama and invite 8th graders from all over to tour their facility and offer jobs to their parents, then yes, I think a 1A school could build a dynasty.

    Exactly, well said!

CA lost the Region last season to Loretto and did so a few years before that.

No one discusses Giles County is open enrollment County so a student can live at the front door of GCHS but attend Richland. Maury County kids attend schools they are not zoned for each year.

The CA coach that got "fired" is still employed by the school.

Getting mad that CA won't join TMSAA is ridiculous. All the other Maury Schools just joined with the last year or two and its not certain that all schools have joined since only one school attended the TMSAA State Sectional.

CA shouldn't be blamed for the lack of success for the other schools.

    10A Girls Overall Basketball Record
    W 40 L 80
    Maury Schools W 22 L 73

    10A Boys Overall Basketball Record W 34 L 84
    Maury Schools W 21 L 72

Time for MCPS board to dig deep into each schools admin, AD's, coaches & sports programs. CA shouldn't be blamed for 145 loses.

When all the other MCPS can advance past the first round of Region Tournament play then CA can be made fun of for supposely choking in the state tournament.

Congratulations the guy is still employed, but why was he removed from coaching? Because of recruiting maybe? Maury County Schools meet with CA, confront them and the guy is suddenly removed as coach. Answer this, wouldn't you say that timing was pretty incredible or an admission of guilt? If there wasn't any recruiting happening why was he relieved of his coaching duties right after the accusations from the public schools?

Excuses excuses excuses... it's all that is posted here. Any school could host AAU or what not. Maybe the schools should have more if an open door policy. As far as "$$$$$" maybe the schools should fundraise instead of waiting on hand outs. People do realize that student tutuion at CA goes toward employee payroll and other bills.

Excuses? Why doesn't CA join schools like themselves? Why are they so hellbent on staying Division I?  It's not like there are 20 or 30 private schools staying Division I, instead it's less than 5, in the entire state!

Summertown’s athletic program is comparable to CA without all of the “benefits” you mention.  They appear to have DONE it much better than you,

How can you compare a private school who buses students from outside it's own county to a public school who doesn't? How does that work? Because they've won 22 games this year? They were 15-13 last year and CA was in the final four of the state. Summertowns record last year was almost identical to Mt. Pleasants this year. Summertown also refused to schedule CA in basketball this year along with Richland and Maury County Schools. Is their football comparable? Not even close!

CA won. Get over it. Play better competition. Work on skill development. Develop an interest in your programs. Start the kids at a young age. Stress fundamentals. Spend the time you are griping, fussing, comparing, etc. and use that time in the gym and see where it gets you.

    CA won- I'm over it

Work on skill development - Done

    Interest in program- Done

Start kids at young age- Done

    Stress Fundamentals -Done

    Spend time in gym- Done

Now all I need is my PUBLIC school to purchase a few small buses to send to a couple of different counties and Spring Hill to shuffle in student athletes and then and only then we are all on a LEVEL playing field!

Ok, ya'll keep on justifying it like the privates did in Nashville for years. If ya'll feel like ya'll are in your christian rights and feel 100% sure you aren't cheating then proceed. Just remember perception is reality when you crush a Hampshire or Sante Fe. I know because of my christian beliefs my kids will never take one step on that campus.

I agree 100%. When a kid is on the free lunch program at a public school, it just seems shocking that their family is somehow able to afford $8,000 for yearly tution and they just happen to be a great athlete too? Anybody with a brain knows what's going on. Most people don't realize this isn't the first time that public schools have chosen not to play Columbia Academy. It happened in the mid 90's when they allegedly recruited basketball players from Hohenwald.

Again, they fired their Jr high softball coach last year after recruiting allegations surfaced. Coincidence of timing? I think not. It's okay though because their time is coming. The TSSAA will force them to move to Division II here in the near future and join school just like themselves.

I find it absolutely hilarious that a private school who refuses to join the TMSAA, a private school who BUS in kids from outside the county, wants to blame the public schools who cannot BUS kids in from other counties. Keyword BUS. Instead, they want to play the poor, pitiful victim. It's comical.

Will they win the region like they did in the district? Absolutely.  Will they win sub-state and return to Murfreesboro? Absolutely. Will they choke and lose in the state tournament again? Absolutely. Congratulations. You won a district, region and Sub-State against all public schools (who don't BUS in students from other Counties) and not a single school like themselves! I mean why would they want to leave Division I? They have it made right where they are at....but they're the poor, little victims in all of this.

  15. If rumors are true, it's helping by pushing CA out the door of Division I and into Division II. CA is one of two, maybe three private schools left in the entire state of Tennessee who has not joined other private schools in Division II.

The issue wasn't as much about basketball as it was baseball and softball and CA's refusal to join the TMSAA at the middle school level. By not joining the TMSAA, it essentially allows CA to practice all middle school sports year round and the ability to recruit at the middle school level.  A huge disadvantage for public schools, all who are members of the TMSAA, which has practice restrictions and other rules much like the TSSAA. If I'm not mistaken, CA's middle school softball coach was mysteriously relieved of his duties after complaints of recruiting from the public schools last year? That happened during discussions between Maury County schools and CA about the future of competition between each other. The timing of it almost seemed like an admission of guilt itself or maybe it's just a strange coincidence?

Anyways, congrats on having a team of players from across the county and outside of Maury County while you beat teams with players whom live in and represent the communities and schools they're from. Enjoy it while you can because when the day comes that CA actually plays (Division II) private schools like themselves, they'll get taken to the woodshed. How did Goodpasture game go last year 77-42 (loss), this year 52-49 (loss), FRA 52-36(loss).

  16. (Maury County) It's the manner in which CA carries themselves that makes them big rivals with everyone. I would have to say seeing them and Mt. Pleasant yell and cuss each other has to be a crazy game. I know I've been there.

Now you know that them fine Christian fans of Columbia Academy wouldn't do such a thing as cuss! ;) Shame on you there fans are great examples of how sportsmanship ought to be! :thumb: Congrats Bulldawgs on a great season and also that choke job that gave Culleoka the District Championship :D

  17. COACHT YOU BETTER WATCH OUT WITH SOMETHINGS THAT ARE BEING PUT ON HERE WITH PEOPLE PUTTING WORDS IN MINORS MOUTHS AND ALSO THINGS ABOUT THEM THAT ARE NOT TRUE. THESE ARE CHILDREN THAT ARE BEING TALKED ABOUT NOT ADULTS. IF NOT YOU AND YOURE WEBSITE COULD FACE LEGAL ACTION FOR SLANDER OF A MINOR!

  18. Yeah he is a good kid...thats why he shoots people birds in the middle of basketball games and tries to fight when the game is over...it seems cj acts just like this crowd you act like he was trying to avoid by coming to Culleoka. How do you think the people that he was trying to avoid would have acted in his shoes...maybe the say way?

    [/quotE

I DON'T KNOW WHO U ARE AND REALLY DONT CARE BUT U AND SLAUGHTER, EDDIE WARF AND THE REST OF YOU PRICKS NEED TO SHUT THE heck UP AND LEAVE THIS KID ALONE AND LEAVE CULLEOKA ALONE. YALL ARE NOTHING BUT A BUNCH OF SORE LOSERS AND YOU WHAT I HOPE YALL DO WIN IN THE TOURNAMENT SO CULLEOKA CAN BEAT YALLS @SS. GET A FREAKIN LIFE!
