  1. I disagree King. Yes, he was dismissed. I'm not sure exactly why. He seems to be a good man and without a doubt he knows and loves the game. I haven't seen many games this year but in the few I have seen, I have seen him quit. I saw him set at York with a towel over his head and stop coaching. I've seen another time or 2where he would quit and set and drink his soda. I'm sure a lot of it was out of frustration but when the kids are looking to him for guidance and he sets and does nothing, to me that is quitting. Again, probably out of frustration, but if you don't allow the kids to quit trying, you shouldn't either. Terrible decision? Maybe. But it looks like he brings some of it on himself, fair or unfair.

Yeah. And once I saw him almost close one eye. And once he was a little taller than I thought he was. And once his chair was crooked. And once I'm pretty sure his shoe was untied and he sat down and quit to tie it. Really? Has anyone in Carthage TN ever noticed how that girls coach acts????? Slinging his fists, jumping up and down, choking himself with his tie.... and even he sits down sometimes, and according to you, quits. Melton may bring it on himself for sure but he will find a place where people will allow him to push kids to excellence. Yes. Terrible decision for all involved, but probably a really good one for the few whiners who can't stand the heat... at least for now.

  2. Upperman and Smith County played at Watertown yesterday. Both played Pickett County. Upperman beat PC in a close game, and Smith lost to Pickett in 2 OT after Smith led the entire second half and missed several foul shots and Pickett hit a halfcourt shot to force OT. I think Upperman is missing a couple of footballplayers and SC is missing 5 including a couple of starters. 8AA may be more even than people are expecting.

  3. I think this will be the most balanced year in recent memory. Here are my picks for the regular season (5-1 could swap in several ways). I'll be surprised if there are not some upsets then in the District Tournament:

    8. Central Magnet

    7. York

    6. Dekalb

    5. Macon

    4. Livingston

    3. Cannon

    2. Smith

    1. Upperman

  4. Interesting...I didn't really go back and look or anything. Just seems that since I remember him there, they've always been competitive and at the top...and always with a player like Cates, Dunn, Ramsey(three in fact) or McCoin.

Either way you slice it, Smith County, while being decent in the talent department, doesn't bring in players of that caliber on a regular basis.

I agree again on the talent department. Maybe the difference in enrollments at SC and LA has something to do with that, or it could be that football seems to be predominant in Carthage.

  5. I thought Upperman was losing quite a bit of playing time. I know they are returning McWilliams as far as starters go but not sure about the rest, any, others with significant minutes returning? I'm not really sure what grades Dronebarger and Devillanueva(I know, sp.) are in...

I'm not saying Melton was a bad coach, that would be a stupid claim, but he walked into a very established program in LA. I don't think anyone in Overton County will deny that their sports are always strong. I'm interested to see how long it takes him to bring Smith up to that level, since that basketball program was struggling when he came in.

DeKalb will still be competitive next year, but will be losing tons of experience and size. Bone will be the only returning payer with any height on him. The middle school will be sending up a very good guard in Jennings, he's had a few 30 point games this season and I look for him to make a impact. There is also a post coming up that's already around 6'3" who's not a bad player. Of course, that's assuming they decide to play.

I think next year will also tell many just how good of a coach Miller is at LA, because he's losing several of the major pieces from his first 1 and 1/2 years. I know there's a kid that's been playing JV who can slam the ball and I sure he'll be right in the starting lineup next season.

You make some good points, but when Richard Melton took over at LA it had won one district tournament in the previous six years, and hadn't been to the substate in nine years. In the mid to late 90s LA has a couple of seasons with 1 or 2 wins, with the exception of the 92 and 97 state tournament appearances. Looking at the records here on coacht in 2002 LA lost in the first round of the District at 7-20, in 2003 exited the first round of region at 18-13, 2004 lost in region semis at 16-18, and in 05 lost in first round of region at home with a good record of 24-8. LA may have had some pretty decent teams before Melton but they weren't at this level.

  6. You need to worry about trying to keep the Overton co players on your team from quiting instead of wondering about LA! Cause your program's success in the past was due to Overton co help. lol.

I'm not going to worry about any of it. Players who don't want to play shouldn't and you didn't address my whining question. Pickett County's past success was due to Overton County help? Are you serious? There have been a few players I guess from Overton County who played at Pickett, but do you really want to compare those to the Pickett County players who were from Byrdstown? And why is that any player who played at Pickett from Overton County would have done so?

  7. SOMEONE was booed off the court after we won last yr...whether refs or our team...who knows? Either way, a call at the end of a game like that should have been irrelevant if you guys had put us away when we were down by 10-12. I was very surprised to see them keep running with us at that point...and yes I know it was late 1st early 2nd quarter. But still, I would expect a team to be more deliberate with their play calling at a point like that.

Has anyone else noticed how often Livingston fans think officials are unfair? If there was contact then it wasn't a no call. However that call had gone, someone would have been unhappy. Give Livingston credit, they are good, but if theire game isn't easy then some of their fans go crazy on the refs. How classy is booing refs out of the gym two years in a row? Maybe LA's coach should have used those other four fouls while Dekalb was holding the ball so that putting them in the bonus might have been possible in case the refs cost them the game on a blown charge. So many little things could change the outcome of games. Maybe Livingston should focus on those and save themselves the embarrassment of coming unglued on the refs. I mean the last few years Livingston has had the biggest team in maybe the midstate and are also the most picked on by the officials? Theres a lot of ball to be played but outside of a few last second shots in the last couple of years, LA seems to have lost its district dominance. Good luck to both teams and maybe refs won't cost LA any more games.

  8. King21. You seem to know an unbelievable amount about every sport at Livingston. You've said you played football there. I'm sure you have lots of pride in your alma mater, but how is it that you know so much about so many players from not only Livingston but other schools too. And you also said you know people in Smith County. I think you even named the classy ones there. I think most of the classy ones you named happen to be from Livingston. You know so many people. Practically all the district coaches in football and basketball. I'm just wondering how it is that you became such good friends with so many people in so many different towns. I'm not doubting your knowledge, but how did you get so connected?

And you call people on here names. I don't think anyone doubts that Livingston is really good. McCoin, Hayes, and company deserve the credit they get and are very good. However, I'm not sure that anyone deserves as much praise as you give your quarterback. You're making Livingston and McCoin out to be world beaters. They'll have to win the state or they'll never live up to your talk. I'm not saying anything negative about you or Livingston or any other person or school, but what makes you such an authority figure on everything? What gives you the right, whether or not someone is right on or way off, to call people on coacht fools?

  10. DCTIGERFAN is probably close. I'd say any of the top four teams could steal a win from each other. Dekalb should be the most experienced. LA had better get it done this year but they'll miss some lost to graduation. Upperman will be deep and better than last year but did lose leading scorer. Look for Smith to keep improving. Cannon and York should be better than last year. As for wins per team, it all depends on strength of schedule. Some coaches will pad the schedule for easy wins and some in this district will make theirs as tough as they can in the name of improvement.

  11. Here are some stats on the Lady Blue Devils on the season from their website.

Caroline Warden Sr. PG 5'5 13.9 ppg 4.4 assists 3 rb 2.1 steals

Jaycee Coe So. SG 5'10 12.6 ppg 5.9 rb 1.1 steals

    Makenzie Hensley Jr. C 6'4 10.3 ppg 6.7 rb 2 blocks

Hope Scantland Sr. SG 5'9 8.7 pts 3.3 rb 1.2 assists 1 steal

    Brooklyn Apple Jr. F 5'9 6.1 pts 4.8 rb 1.8 assists

Reserves are Katie Hall and Tiona Pruett, both log minutes as needed. This team is well balanced and has seemed to come together after a rough patch in the middle of the season. Let's see if they can bring it together and not collapse in the state like they did last year. (I think these stats are incomplete, because I believe Hensley has more blocks per game than that)

Any Van Buren fans have any info on their team?

an 8th grader cant go to JC and win

  12. Better to pull splinters from our trip to the woodshed in "SUBSTATE" than pulling out bee stings and going home in "REGION" play  Now you go and find your cousin and call it a night!

as an outsider.... how many gold balls does LA hold? has grundy ever played at central?

  13. Here's my honest opinion...

I do not believe it is a popularity contest at all. If that was the case, Jackson Co. would have someone nominated every year because Jackson Co. is always at the Single A state tournaments. Although, Jackson Co. does produce severeal Ms. Basketball winners/finalist, they're all normally deserving of their nomination and should've been nominated. As for this years finalist in Single A, I believe all 3 are very deserving. I've only seen Risner and Flowers play, but have heard about Garland a lot. I think all 3 are deserving.

Another point I will make... I do think that a state tournament showing from a particular team that will return a possible Ms. Basketball finalist for either their Junior or Senior year does make a huge impact on that particular player getting nominated that following year. For instance, there's no doubt in my mind that Brandi Goodman should've been a Ms. Basketball finalist this year as a Junior. That's not a knock on the other AA Ms. Basketball finlist that were nominated for this year. But back to Goodman, if Obion Co. would've made state last year, which was Goodman's sophomore season, she would've been nominated this year. I'm not sure on her exact stats, but I'm sure she is averaging atleast 20 points and 10 boards a game. She has also lead her team to a 2 loss season and in one of those losses she didn't even play. She is receiving interest from Big 12 school's as well as some interest from SEC schools as a Junior this year. Like I said, had Goodman been seen last year at the state tournaments as a Sophomore, I believe that Goodman would've been nominated this year.

    Just my .2 cents....
