  2. It's good to see some of the old-timers - I knew you guys were lurking. We're probably not ready for steaks yet, but I think we'll be able to hook you up with some soup beans and cornbread. Big week for West this week (weather permitting) - need to do some growing up fast.

Can't confirm anything about West v Cherokee yet - I do know that the field was covered over the weekend. I also know the weatherman says more rain coming.

I didn't know how much I was gonna miss the frog jokes, Lancelot - don't be strangers guys. Please drop in when you can.

I can't help it....I agree with Quietobserver....surely weather will not be a problem getting the game in at West today!

  3. Statman - how is your girl doing? Hope to catch you somewhere along the way.

    Doing well Lance...

Carrying a 10 and 2 record...team is 21 and 4 with a #6 national ranking. Not bad for freshman but she's had a couple of rough outings.

You may be interested to know however that she is well established as the campus "marbles" champion!

Let me know when the steaks are on!

  4. Next weekend the Good Ole NFS Tournament. Statman you coming to join us for those fried taters and onions? Looking forward to a Great Tournament, hope it's pretty, I'm tired of ringing the h2o out of those cushions LOL! :thumb::thumb:

Always enjoyed the NFS, SCOOBY....for those who haven't been I'll give a commercial. BEST TATERS and ONIONS BAR NONE!!!!

Good Luck to you and yours SCOOBY....I'll be in AL.

  5. I'm still waiting for an appearance from my old buddies Lance and Statman - could use a little livening up in here from some long-time IMAC fans - what do you boys think (I know you're checking in on us every now & then) about the latest edition of District 2 AAA?

    I'm here MWTFAN,

I'm just sitting back enjoying all the scouting reports. I believe some of the folks in Kingsport may be paying attention to them also.

Still licking a few wounds from the nature of my Chief's departure last year and trying to take Sylvia's advice to "move on", but I think all I really needed was a good frog joke. Thanks LANCE!

Going to be an interesting year in the IMAC. I think that the IMAC as a whole should not underestimate District 1 this year. I knew Boone would be strong, but am surprised a little from SH and Kingsport.

Chiefs have three hurlers that are freshmen or sophomore. This year may see growing pains (unless they can figure out how to get Davis in the batting lineup 3 places), but the future could be pretty bright.

  6. I don't care what anyone says, it DOES affect your speed. Maybe only 2-5 miles per hour, but regardless, it does.

Hope you dont teach science or physics. Might need to brush up on your science and maybe your logic too. How about you tell us how you throw a ball slower from three more feet? Are you suggesting that you slow your arm down because you moved back 3 feet? That's hogwash. You probably throw with more force. Are you suggesting that the distance all 3 feet of it makes the ball slow down more? Surely not. A thrown ball will slow down a little every 10 feet or so but not anything like 5 mph for 3 feet. Cause ITS ONLY THREE FEET!

    Better Radar Guns in College?

  7. Unicoi County is close, Kara Woods,

    Wins 67

    Losses 7

    Innings Pitched 497

    Strike Outs 785

    Batters Faced 1917

    Hits Allowed 211

    Runs Allowed 65

    Earned Runs Allowed 25

Base on Balls/Hit by Pitch 47

    Batting Avg. Against 0.113

    ERA. 0.352

    Shutouts 44

This is based on Official books by Unicoi County. X's 2 yrs

    3rd in State 2008, 2009 State Champions

Yes you are Correct, Miss Gilbert should have been in the listing.

I'll never forget the Eastman Game, what a pitchers dual!

Kara's accomplishments are outstanding. If you consider that she has generated these stats in her first two years while sharing time in the circle as a freshman, it makes it even more impressive.

Kara has also been recognized by the TSWA for her accomplishments in both of her first two years and she deserves the recognition. She is fortunate to have the support of the Johnson City Press to make sure her accomplishments aren't overlooked.

I will remember that Eastman game also. It is one of many epic battles between Cherokee and Unicoi that I will remember. Three consecutive championship games in the NFS tournament the previous three years were equally impressive.

  8. Is she getting any looks from colleges? If she is that good, she should have generated a lot of interest from colleges.

Signed back last fall with University of Alabama - Huntsville who finished as national runner-up in division 2 this year.

Done pretty well on the recruiting end from exposure playing summer ball for Knoxville Thunder - Sams.

This is simply a school ball issue and again not just for her....there are others.

  9. Get your closest media to join the TSWA, or submit the info to Johnson City or Knoxville.

I have talked with sports media in Knoxville and Tri-cities about the problem. They acknowledge it and the response is that they push for players from within their distribution area. That is typically followed by sheepish apologetic gesture of some sort as if they are embarrassed to admit it.

I know that the TSWA is attempting to fill a void and in some ways are providing a service by even bothering with selecting an all-state team since TSSAA doesn't. But again...the process is broke!

  10. I knew she was your daughter. It's obvious, and you should be proud of her accomplishments. Although your not doing her any favors by whining on here about the lack of publicity.

I realize that and I agree with you. As a matter of fact she hates this site and I will catch it when she hears from some of her friends that I was on here talking about it.

To be honest with you, I was more upset by it the previous year. But it's too late for her now and as I said in a previous post. There are others who follow and they will be in the same boat. It needs to be fixed.

There are a lot more people who read this stuff than would ever admit to it. I hope someone is listening.

  11. Don't the tri-cities media cover such teams?

With the exception of Tricitiessports.com who have done a good job covering IMAC, it seems the only coverage beyond scores out of tri-cities comes only when they play District 1 teams.

In fact, had a District 1 player generated anything close over the past couple years, this would not have been an issue. The tricities media would have taken care of it. I submit Dannielle Thomas (Dobyns Bennett All State 2007) and Ashleigh Jackson (Science Hill All State 2007) as evidence.

Before anyone gets wound up over the last comment....I am big fan of both of these pitchers and they were very deserving of the recognition.

  12. Statistics can be deceiving.

I knew I was going to get some of this.

Yes, she is my daughter and Yes, I am very proud of her accomplishments.

As far as statistics being deceiving, I agree, they can...but a K is a K.....A win is a win.....A 4th place finish in the state is a 4th place finish in the state. As far as ERA, do a couple of sanity checks yourself. The softball page on coacht lists top defenses by total runs allowed (and a run is a run). In almost all cases you will find that the pitchers on the teams listed with the top defensive teams carry an ERA at about half of the runs allowed. For example, an earlier post stated that the Goodpasture pitcher had stats that weren't correct (ERA of 1.000) listed in the all state press release. That poster is correct. Goodpasture only allowed an average of .7 runs per game total. I am sure their main pitcher sported an ERA well under .5, probably in the .35 range.

My bigger point is this. There are areas of the state that don't get the media coverage necessary to make the all state team. I wish someone would fix that. There are other "daughters" throughout the IMAC for example, who are getting the same treatment and it will continue.

  13. Please clarify this statement. I am a bit in the dark as to your point.

    Just venting!!!!

I am having a hard time understanding how a pitcher with these accomplishments got overlooked in the TSWA selection process in both 2008 and 2009.

    I'll get over it....maybe.

  14. OK...

Somebody out there put me out of my misery.

Find me any pitcher in the state (from any division or classification) over the last two years with:

    63 or more wins,

    over 800 K's.

    a .5 ERA or better,

and a top 4 state finish

  15. That is the TSWA list. There was a name on there in the wrong category, that usually happens when the list first comes out then it is corrected. As far as the players not included, it's really a matter of either making it to a big stage where a lot of writers's can see, or coaches marketing their players, mailing out stats to TSWA members and such.

Making it to the big stage does not work in all cases. Reference my previous post. The problem is there are areas of the state that simply are not eligible for this recognition by virtue of the fact they are not in any media coverage area. Media feel responsible for representing the athletes in their distribution area only and there is little or no effort beyond that to identify those that may be deserving but aren't represented by a tswa member. Fact is there are areas excluded from consideration making the list less than it could be.

  16. 2008:

    P - "Rodney Dangerfield", Jr., Cherokee, 37-11, 28 Shutouts, 420 K, 0.57 ERA, .309 BA, 6 HR's, 4th place TSSAA State AAA

    2009:

    P - "Rodney Dangerfield", Sr., Cherokee, 26-8, 18 Shutouts, 389 K, 0.44 ERA

    Career:

    P - "Rodney Dangerfield", Cherokee, 89-32, 56 Shutouts, 18 No-hitters, 1,129 K, .65 ERA

    NEVER RECOGNIZED BY THE TSWA!

I used to think that the only thing holding girls off of this from Region 1 was a top finish in the state tournament. In 2008, Mrs. Dangerfield was the only pitcher out of 14 total pitchers making it to the final four in the tssaa tournament to not make this list. In other words 13 of 14 Division I pitchers who toed the rubber in the state tournament for a team that finished in the top 4 made this list.

Mrs. Dangerfield is not alone....there are many other Region 1 softball athletes that simply aren't getting a fair shake in this selection process.

Only region 1 representation on this list is 3 from Unicoi in AA and 2 from North Greene in A. They are very deserving, but something is broken in this process.

  17. I would say that Team Worth and Knoxville Thunder 93 stand the best chances to grab the 2 remaining berths.

I was told the 93 Thunder just missed getting there berth this past weekend in SC. After 11 games in 2 days an injury got the best of them.

Thunder 93 dropped a close one on Saturday night to Ga Impact to fall into loser's bracket. They made an incredible 6 game run through the loser's bracket on Sunday with only 9 players. They eliminated two East Cobb Bullets teams and Team Georgia in the process. Ran out of gas in the championship to a third East Cobb Bullets team who got the berth. Catcher broke a finger toward the end of the game in the final game of loser's bracket and continued play in the outfield. Tough and gutsy performance for Thunder.

  20. Fellowship of Christian Athletes put on an inaugural All Star game this weekend at ETSU.

Senior All Stars from Northeast TN squared off against Senior All Stars from SW Virginia for a double header Saturday afternoon at ETSU's beautiful new softball stadium.

TN swept both games. Game one went 1 to 0 and a 5inning rain shortened game 2 went 3 to 0. Congrats to the seniors from both teams.

Glad to see this event get started. Hope to see it continue as an annual event.

  21. Just wondering where this info came from? Im thinking there is a few more that should be included in this list.

Comes from the softball page right here on coacht. Lists the top offensive and defensive teams based on scores entered into coacht.

from the front page, select softball in the drop down box on the upper left.
