  1. Great!!!!

2007 and 2008, Jeff County plays at Cocke County on Homecoming Night. Huge crowd, lots of student envolvement, etc. 2009, Senior Night? Great!!!!!!

That was in jest. There is never a "good" time to visit the Hen House. Congrats to those ladies. I am one year removed, but have always admired how those 3 played the game.

Statman....no conversation on how Cherokee beat East? PTS, when do the coaches get together for bracketology? Barring some major upsets, I guess there will be two coin flips?

    RR,

I unfortunately missed the Cherokee/East game the other night. Not much to talk about with Cherokee Bball this year and I missed the only bright spot in the lady chief's IMAC season so far. Poor timing on my part.

I understand that the lady chiefs had to battle back from a big deficit early, and that's great to hear from this young group. With the way their season has gone, it sure would be easy to give up in the face of a big deficit like that.

So as the season winds down, my hope is for the season to end on a positive note for these girls. There are two seniors who deserve to go out on a positive note and there is tremendous upside for the younger players on this team so a strong finish would help build toward what will certainly be more success over the next three years.

  2. I was wondering who all from East Tennessee already knows where they are playing college ball. I don not know anyone who is playing where I am and was hoping to meet some prospect softball players as well as my own teammates Saturday at Open House. I am also interested in seeing where all the players in my district (Morristown East, Morristown West, Cherokee, Cocke Co, Greenville, and of course Jefferson County where I am) are playing next spring. Fill me in!

Ashley Tharpe - Morristown East signed with Carson Newman

Whitney Gilbert - Cherokee signed with University of Alabama in Huntsville

Abby Hughes - Cherokee is signing with Milligan College later today

These are the ones I know....I am sure there are others

  3. Who are your favorites from Tn. to qualify for the 09 ASA nationals in 14U & 16U age divisions?

    And why do you think they will likely qualify?/popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" />

Fury Fastpitch 16U has already qualified via their Championship at the southern nationals last year.

Knoxville Thunder Harris is a 15 year old team that were the first to qualify last summer in 14U and I think stand a greaat chance to qualify again this year expecially since TN has 4 state berths.

  4. Did West lose a player? I'm new to this board, so I apologize for any "dumb" comments. I'm more a fan of district 1-AAA (or know more about it) but the IMAC conference has certainly caught my eye over the last couple of years. Lots of talent to be seen in this area. Are these teams expected to be a level higher than they were last year?

I was just poking a little fun at the IMAC board. Last year in the preseason, the IMAC board had a lot of fun discussing the "ray of sunshine" that transferred into M West between semesters. A 6' tall pitcher from Florida who has apparently had to move back to Florida between semesters this year.

But in all honesty, M West has at least two other good pitchers to pick up the slack. And for about the fourth year in a row....it should be a dog fight for the top spot this year.

  5. I meant #2 on that list in the Chattanooga area. Sorry if I stated it wrong.

By my numbers they had 218 between them. Thomas had 222 through the last I could find.

I'm just saying they didn't do too badly. We can hire Bill James to come in and do a breakdown of win-shares, relative team strength, etc.,etc.,etc. but the discussion here was that Mount Juliet would NEVER be back to the Coffee County classic.

I am asking for a clarification of that statement and asking if it was because they felt like they would play weaker teams here.

    No harm,

I was just curious as to the stats.....and yes there is a vested interest. I was wondering how these pitchers compared with "Rodney Dangerfield" from Cherokee who ended up with 420 by my count. My guess is the pitcher from Rossview was up in the same area.

I'll get out of the way and let the original purpose of this thread continue.

  6. Never is a long time. We hope they come back...they are a great team. Great fans.

Maybe I missed something...a close call that I didn't see that MJ felt like was a home cooking deal...I don't know. If it was I didn't see it and maybe I just don't remember...I have slept since then but I don't see what they have to be mad about.

I understand how it angers a coach to get beat by a team that they don't feel like is in the same league as them. I have been there. If I live long enough I probably will again....but sometimes teams turn out to be better than you think they are. That is what I think happened last year. We got over looked some. I won't lie...when Martin stroked the home run off our freshman lefty, I thought "this is going to be ugly".

I did not figure Casey Vincent was going to have the game she did but she kept the ball down and kept them off balance. She walked 2 and struck out 7 giving up 2 runs to a very strong team. Mt. Juliets pitcher, Shelby Morris (now at ETSU) struck out 5 and gave up 3 runs to CC. I'm not saying that as a bragging daddy, I'm just saying that as those are the facts of the game. Maybe Casey was fresher because she and Kristin Swan were pitching every other game. That's just good coaching in my opinion. I think developing a pitching "staff" instead of one pony is just smart but that's another thread.

I don't know any stats on Morris but the Chattanooga Times post stats on their "best of preps". According to their results from May 9 of last spring, and compared to my numbers, the pitching staff of Kristen Swan and Casey Vincent would have been #2 in strike outs behind state champ Holly Thomas (Tennessee Tech). Again, just facts.

In my opinion they got beat by a better pitching staff and better team.

I'm not saying this to run down Mount Juliet. I am just saying that I don't see why they wouldn't want to come back to the Coffee County Classic. We had good teams, good food, good music. Plenty of hotel rooms and places to eat. We would love to have them back as well as the other great teams we have coming in.

Just curious....what were the strikeout counts that you consider to be 2nd in the state behind Thomas?

  7. I was able to find this.

  9. The "Lady Raiders" will be the top team this year in District 8AAA and it should be the "Football School" in second but the "Basketball School" will be in the bottom if not on the very bottom......well the "Wildkittens" may have something to do with who is on the bottom! I have had heard several people at the gym wondering where "MrNoitAll" was, it is so funny listening to people talk and not even know that they are talking to the one and only "MrNoitAll" /flower.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":flower:" border="0" alt="flower.gif" />

    Welcome back Mrnoitall.

I'm looking forward to your ensights on the upcoming softball season. Hope to see you extend your coverage/thoughts and predictions beyond the midstate. Time for mrnoitall to expand!

  10. That excuse doesnt fly ghs.......Cocke co had more players in foul trouble than you did.

I know its hard to be at the top for so long..... You start feeling bullitproof.......and when the reallity of close competition sits in its hard not to feel like the victim........and i feel your pain ive been there....and i too had to learn from it and figure out the whole world wasnt out to get us......just half the state /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

Last i checked Cocke co doesnt have assigned seating you can sit anywhere ya want.

Statman i dont need to let anything go ,just simply stating cherokee has a history of going to the TSSAA before playing an opponent or so i ive been told on good authority.

And for what its worth Ray is soooo correct.

Here further west we have one of those places to play Its called Oakridge. Oakridge has outstanding talent and a great coach but when you go there...expect to play 6.....its just the way it is.

"Hear-Say"! Notoriously unreliable and potentially damaging to innocent parties.

  11. I think it is intresting that a Greeneville fan is complaining about a Lady Geene Devil getting knocked around. Coach Crumbly over the past 3 years has established the threshold for phyiscal play, especially on the defense end. It is a well know fact in the conference that when you play Greeneville, you are going to go home bruised up. The past two years have seen an escalation of the physiical play, to the point when I see our IMAC teams out of conference, the opposing fans are constantly compaining about our physical play.

Excellent observaiton on the increased physical play in the IMAC. Also much improved and more competitive teams in IMAC now....maybe there is a relationship.

I do have to say though that as physical as Greeneville plays, I think their physical play fits within what I would call "basketball contact". Hard box outs, contact in the paint when someone is attempting to cross the lane, aggressive pursuit of loose balls....this type contact fits in the game nicely and I like to see it.

The physical play that involves intentional hard fouls, extended arm shoving, and the dreaded intentional elbow "targeted" at a jaw is not so welcome however, and I have to say I haven't seen much of that from Greeneville.

  12. Trotter Coach seems Cherokee has gone to TSSAA with beefs before.......Id check them first.

Ghsfan......Foul Imbalance?......Were you even at the game?.

Maybe ya got hold of some bad mushrooms at the beanbarn.

Depew took a charge(NOTE I SAID CHARGE)from Dixon last night and popped up smiling. Dixon lowered her head and shoulder and ran thru her like Tebow going for a first down.

I had heard alot about Coach Crumbley but i thought she retained her poise and coached her team.

Both coaches had a defensive chess match going and from a fans point a view it was fun to watch the intensity in a packed gym.

"Seems" Rob can't let it go! Leave Cherokee out of this, lady chiefs have enough to worry about trying to get competitive in this conference.

  13. Isn't Wilson Central one of those "basketball schools" like Livingston Acadamy and McMinn Central and Maryville in football that everybody who thinks their kids have talent moves to so they can get a college scholarship?

As to the coaching, it is easy to be a "good coach" with all of that talent and size sitting on the bench. For a local team (with a MUCH lower population draw) which is not a "basketball school," MW, Cocke Co, and Greeneville have done extrememly well.

    Nut,

While perhaps not the same level, don't you think you may be discounting the demonstrated abilities of MW and Greenville to draw talent to their programs as well?

  14. Not sure where you got your information, but I can only guess that it was from Leonard's "Jethro Bodine math", but the Magic beat the Thunder 2 out of 3 times that they played in the '07 fall league at Eagleton. They did not play each other during the summer or fall of '08.

OK....let's get some good information on here.

    Maryville League Fall '07:

    9/8/07 Knoxville Thunder - Sams 16U (6) Maryville Magic - 18U (0)

    9/29/07 Maryville Magic - 18U (2) Knoxville Thunder - Sams 16U (1)

    Halloween Havoc Fall '07:

10/20/07 Maryville Magic 18U Defeated Knoxville Thunder - Sams 16U (score unknown)

    Southeastern Exposure (Summer '08):

    6/7/08 Knoxville Thunder - Sams 16U (2) Maryville Magic - 18U (1)

Not sure if Magic actually faced Thunder 18U during that time frame.

  15. I understand what your saying Ray and id like to make just a few points.

The folks i talked to that were at the game said Wade benched his starters early in the 4th or it would have been a 40 point spread.

I dont think Wade is going anywhere and for a first year coach hes doing great with the girls and for that reason im inclined to give him a pass on a few goofs with the press.

Im all about good sportsmanship.....but a good old fashion butt whooping on the court sends a message. One that in my opinion was needed here.

If your not from the community (im from knoxville myself ) you probably wouldnt appreciate Elvis night or free buddys barbq promotions......but the excitement level for the program is going thru the roof.

Im not saying Wade is Bruce Pearl but the surrounding SEC fans arent endeared to him either.

Im sure Coach Galyon has his detractors but that doesnt keep him from being a good coach to his girls.

I hope you can tell in my words there is no sarcasm just letting you know my feeling on the subject.

If youd like to email me or send me a message ill tell you whats its about i just dont think its my place to elaborate because im not the one offended.

Starters backed off of the full court press during their last defensive possession before being pulled out with 3:30 remaining in the 4th quarter. At the time, Lady red were up by somewhere in the 38 to 40 point range. You are right... it was a butt whooping that got ugly and way out of hand in the 3rd qtr.

I have seen every Cocke County/Cherokee ball game for the last 5 years and I can't remember a game with more spread than 10 points during that time. So, unless your comment goes back further than that, I just don't understand your "payback" comment.

Why do you think the butt whooping was "needed"?

  16. Cherokee turned the ball over 31 times in the game. They really struggled against the defensive pressure.

Defensive pressure was tough....deep into the 4th quarter with a 40 point lead and all the Ladyred starters pressing full court....very impressive.

This along with the coach's comments in the paper, it seems he is really trying to make an impression in IMAC!

  17. My understanding:

Apr 3-5 ASA Berth to 10U and 12U in Chattanooga Warner Park

May 22-24 ASA Berth 10-18 Hendersonville

May 29-31 ASA Berth 10-18 Chatt Warner park

June 26-28 ASA Berth 14U,16U,18U New Summit Park near mall

July 10-12 ASA Berth 10-18 (State Tournament)

    4 berths per age group

Thanks for the info. I like to see the extra berths this year, but how did they re-structure to get that many state berths. Are there still 2 regional berths and are there still 16 national qualifiers like in years past?

Also, does anyone know dates and locations for the GOLD berths available to TN teams?

  18. I noticed on the ASA district 10 web site that the council meeting this year adopted changes to the way berths are given. It states that TN will receive 4 berths in each age group. I am assuming that this impacts 2009.

Does anyone have information on when and where the tournaments giving out these TN berths will be held?

  19. There is a lot of good information on here so far. It is refreshing to so many people trying to help out a young lady. I would like to add a few things from an ex-player now parent of 4 athletes point of view. Back in the day /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> when I played things were different. Fewer players, less exposure, lack on knowledgeable coaches or for what ever the reason TN & the Knoxville area was miles behind the rest of the country & the opportunities for play at the next level wasn't there. I was fortunate enough to play with one of the best High School pitcher to come out of Knoxville & our players got a lot of looks because of that. Things have changed tremendously. High School wont get you far any more. You need a well known, reputable travel ball program with the right goals for that. My oldest now in her senior year at a top end D2 school had to play with a team out of Nashville to get seen. My second oldest (the true all around athlete of the bunch) had to play with a team out of North Georgia / Chattanooga to be seen. I am happy to say that my High School Junior has been able to play with a Knoxville team the entire time & is on the right path for the next level if that is what she wants. The Knoxville area is slowly learning & if the 2-3 coaches that have the knowledge & experience would just swallow there macho pride & get over there egos the Knoxville area could have that true Gold team (or one real close to it) It starts at the lower levels. You cant just wake up one morning & decide your going to compete as a Gold team when you have been playing B ball the past 3 years.

    Kara,

You dont have to go to Nashville or Chattanooga to be seen. There is teams in the Knoxville area that can help get you to that next level. There are a few coaches that know what it takes & will help guide you down the correct path. My advice to you & your parents would be to talk with the coaches of some of the the teams named on here. Ask the hard questions. Who beat who or wins and losses doesnt mean anything, you need a to be on a team that can complement your talents. I would stay away from teams that just have one or two teams in there organization, most of them are lacking coaches with the experience or knowledge to get you to the next level. The better programs attract the best coaches at the higher levels & thats what you need to help you threw this journey. IMO, with you being a SO (2011 Grad) you should be striving to play on a team that has a chance of making it to the 16u ASA Nationals. Exposure tournaments & National Qualifiers should be all thats on there schedule. One last thing, dont count on your coaches to do all the work for you. You need to start self promoting. Fill out the questioners, email the coaches of the collages of your choice & ALWAYS reply back to any emails you receive. Register for the Clearinghouse ASAP & keep your grades up. Doesent matter if your the next Jenni Finch, if your grades are below par you wont make it to the next level. Collage ball should just be a stepping stone for the best education possible.

Best of luck on this journey & God Bless!

Great Post!!!! and Great advice....obviously someone who has been through it.
