Where the heck is that coming from? CC is right, standard formation they have been using, and the shot count was ND 10, CPA 2 ?
D
It is probably coming from the fact that a 4-5-1 is a defensive-minded formation. Many teams go to that formation late in games to preserve a lead.

Saturday night's final between Baylor (18-1) and St. Agnes (17-1-1) ought to be a great matchup. Both teams are undefeated against Tennessee teams with their single losses coming at the elite Zionsville Invitational in Indianapolis. Baylor is currently ranked 4th nationally by ESPN.
-
they were a favorite because they were defending champion and returned most of their players. pretty easy to figure that one out.
as was stated at the first of the last post ... maybe others should playe SD, Baylor and Bearden on road and CCS three times and let's see the outcome.
b.b.b.
It seems more sensible to grant favorite status based on results from the current season rather than past seasons. Losing games to SD, Baylor, Beardon and CCS 3 times will certainly help raise your CoachT strength of schedule rating but I'm still not sure its a good criterion for granting favorite status.
In any case, I have enjoyed your articles and thank you for your efforts in promoting girls soccer.

My reasoning. ND is defending state champs with most of their players back ... CPA has had a cinderella season according to their coach, not me . lost 10 key players to graduation from last year's team.
ND had been in the finals in 2009 and 2010 with many of the players in the match last nite.
Here are some of the Irish losses ...
lost to Soddy Daisy (19-3-2) on the road (2-1) who made the AAA semis, lost at GPS (3-1) on the road with a goalkeeper now playing in South America in a U20 World Cup qualifying tourney, lost to Baylor on the road (4-0) who is top 10 in the nation, lost 1-0 to the defending D-II A champs USJ, lost to Bearden on the road (6-0) who made the AAA state quarters losing to Franklin on Wed .. lost three close matches to CCS (all 1-0) who also made the D-I A-AA semis ... tied Cleveland on the road (0-0) who was second in the region to SD .. tied St. George's who is in the D-II A semis
pretty tough schdedule and a losing record can be deceiving .. and went on the road and won playoff matches at Livingston Academy and East Hamilton .. both those teams had winning records ..
b.b.b.
Hats off to ND for scheduling good teams but a tough schedule does not make one a favorite. Any team can play a tough schedule and lose lots of games.

For Christ Presbyterian Academy, the Cinderella girls soccer season continues, the glass slipper still fits and the chariot has yet to turn in to a pumpkin.
CPA outlasted defending D-I A-AA champion Notre Dame Friday night winning on penalty kicks, 5-4.
Basketball player-turned-goalkeeper Meredith Roman stopped Notre Dame's sixth shot by Sophie Mullin to win the match and send the Lions into Saturday's championship match against Christian Academy of Knoxville (3-0 winner against Chattanooga Christian) at 11 a.m. at GPS.
"We graduated 10 seniors who were major contributors last season so we were not expected to be here, but we are," said CPA coach Brandy Gagliano.
"This win was payback and revenge as Notre Dame beat us on this field (Chattanooga Christian School) in the state quarters last season."
Notre Dame beat CPA, 2-1, in sudden death a year ago today.
After 110 minutes of scoreless play tonight, the teams went to penalty kicks with CPA making five of six, with the Irish finding the back of the net on four of six attempts.
Scoring goals for CPA were Madi Andres, Mary Morgan Smith, Michaela Lee, Abi Kania and Meagan Roach which proved to be the winner. Lindsay Curtis was the only CPA player to miss her PK.
Notre Dame scorers were Ashley Henry, Liz Kidwell, Lacey Mahoney and Laura Champion. Gaby Gurrola and Mullin had the misses.
"This was a close match between two evenly-matched teams and they made one more kick than we did and that was the difference," said Notre Dame coach Jim Schermerhorn whose team ended the season at 8-12-2.
"We had a great season, but this is a tough way for the girls to end it."
CPA (12-7-4) lost to the enventual winner the past four years, including the Irish in last year's quarters.
CPA 0, Notre Dame 0
CPA 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0
ND 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0
CPA wins on PKs, 5-4

B. B--An upset? Really? Did you take a look at the win-loss records of these teams and quality wins? On what basis was Notre Dame the favorite?

This quote seemed appropriate Champs, so I'm sharing: "Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after." ~Henry David Thoreau
Isn't the goal of any game to do what you need to win as long as you follow and respect the rules of the game? Some teams test the boundaries of allowable physical contact to nullify at least partially an opponent's superior skill and athleticism. Other teams make the field shorter toward the same end. And others play eleven behind the ball in hopes of winning in PKs. Some of these strategies might detract from enjoyment of the game. But shouldn't we blame imperfect rules and not the teams trying to win while staying within the rules?

BGA is ranked #2 as of Oct 19, 2011.............................
Baylor and St. Agnes are clearly the two top teams going into the tournament. After that, it's a toss-up. JPII would be my dark horse pick. Here are the match-ups from the TSSAA site for the quarterfinals:
Battle Ground Academy v. Briarcrest
St. Agnes v. Pope John Paul II
Baylor v. Brentwood Academy
St. Benedict v. Father Ryan

Noticed the same thing....
Courter saved Signal Mountain's first penalty kick but the Lady Eagles connected on the other three, unfortunately for the Lady Eagles the Notre Dame shooters hit all five to earn the win.
Even if this was edited later, most readers are going to implicitly read the "for the Lady Eagles" into the text. My experience (like Indians) is that these articles without a byline are submitted by the winning team, often a coach and sometimes a volunteer parent. As someone with no dog in the hunt, I thought the article was objective and well done. Sounds like it was a great game.

Interesting that all of the girls in the top 4 played D1: (MTSU, UTC, UNC and UTC in that order). In addition, Kat Nigro was on the U17 National team. I would say that Brenna is among fine company.
184 Courtney Dunlap Donelson Christian Academy 2000-2003
168 Becca Smith Riverdale 2005-2008
163 Kat Nigro Livingston Academy 2007-2010
162 Crystal Mackezyk Spring Hill 2007-2010

95GSoccer hit the nail on the head but it still is a very significant accomplishment.

It's very tough to win in this league week after week, especially on the road. But I will go out on a limb here, Baylor wins a thriller on a last second field goal by place-kicker phenom Henrique Ribeiro. Final score 30-28 Baylor.

What has changed is there are betwen 10,000 and 13,000 fans who want to see the game in person. McCallie is committed to making the game accessible to anyone who wants to pay the price of admission.
McCallie can host the game wherever they want but I think you are confusing the issues. McCallie stadium, like Baylor, has a capacity of around 6000, and the only people that will show up for the game are those that have tickets ahead of time. No one else gets in. So, the logistics of 10-13,000 is irrelevant since the logistics are the capacity of the stadium.
Now, one might argue that all 10-13,000 that want to see the game ought to be able to see it, and if that is one's point of view, then Finley is a great venue. But if you want a great atmosphere with deafening noise and want to take advantage of a home field advantage (as Baylor does), then hold the game at McCallie. I don't think logistics are the real issue here. I think its the tradeoff between great atmosphere and access to all.
One last word. I was at the game at Baylor when Baylor broke the streak and that was the single most exciting sporting event I have ever attended. The atmosphere was movie-like and pure "Friday Night Lights".

Most importantly, no Red on campus.
Hope you are kidding!

Page is having a fine season, and a tie against Centennial tells us that they can stay on the field with a good opponent. But I agree with CHAMPDDS that unless a team plays good competition there will always be insufficient information about that team to merit a high ranking along side teams that are playing good competition. Here are the win-loss records of the opponents of the top five in the poll:
Notre Dame .608
CCS .576
CAK .545
Whitehouse .523
Fred Page .375
Because of their weak SOS, Page will have to wait until the state tournament to make their case about how good they really are.
-
The Baylor place-kicker Henrique Ribeiro arguably was the difference in this game. His 2 field goals of 42 and 52 yards turned out to be the point differential.
What a weapon! How many other high school teams simply have to reach the opponent's 40 yard line for an opportunity to score. Basically, Baylor goes into every game already up 6+ points because of Henrique.

I have been able to see both Briarcrest and Baylor play at different times...I would love to be able to see these two teams play each other (assume eventually they will this season...)...Both teams have some of the best foot skills-passing confidence I have seen...
D
Interesting that Briarcrest does relatively well in an "RPI" type ranking when they are at the bottom in the Eurosport rankings (what are these based on?). We will know a bit more about Briarcrest soon. They play St. Agnes, St. Benedict, Farragut and Houston in succession beginning tomorrow.

STRONGSVILLE is the correct spelling, they are consistently in the top ten. Nice Win Baylor
EVANSVILLE was #12 on ESPN's most recent poll
ST URSALA had moved up to #10
We will see MARIA CARRILLO here in Collierville for the RIVALs event
Thanks for the update just-do-it. I had been getting texts from there and Bearden, but there is nothing like seeing it first hand. A lot of times the scores don't match the result....soccer
Thanks for correcting my spelling. I obviously spent too much time in the sun watching a very STRONG FIELD!

Not so sure standings are set. BGA, with the return of their post player, are far stronger than their record indicates. BGA/Father Ryan and JP2/Harpeth Hall should be competitive games.
You should not drink before you post. BGA's post player has not been anywhere. Far stronger, ha ha ho ho hee hee.
According to BGA's coach, Ramer, BGA's post-player, was sidelined much of the season:
Franklin vs Baylor

As a casual empiricist, I have observed that national rankings do seem to mean more to those who are ranked than to those who are not. But to say the rankings are "meaningless" seems a bit strong. What it "means" is that you have a near flawless record, you play top competition and that you have a handful of DI athletes on the team. Does the actual ranking mean a lot? Probably not. Are worthy teams omitted from the rankings? Absolutely.
