The increase was $5.00 for a single game. You are right most of us do have jobs, but
we have to leave early or take vacation to do something most of us love doing. The per hour
rate is not $21.25 when you include all the travel to and from the games, gas and food.
The TSSAA sure didn't mind increasing the fees officials have to pay each year!
Forgive me, but how do you get that the increase was $5? Each umpire received $65 per game in 2010. They wanted $85 per game for 2011. That is a $20 per game increase. That is a 31% raise. How many people do you know that got a 31% raise with our economy? We only have so much money in our budget. The first thing to go is JV games. Next will be home games. There are already at least two Metro teams that only play district home games. You have to host them to play outside of their district schedule. That would probably be our next step as well.
All you guys saying you should charge a fee to play have obviously never worked at an inner city school. All the kids are on fee-waivers as it is. You could charge all you want, but you are not going to get it. Then you tell the kid, sorry but you can't play ball because you don't have any money. Guess what they turn to if they don't have ball or something else positive to occupy their time?
Go back to your economics classes. Supply and demand must intersect. Your price gets too high and your demand disappears.
The increase wasn't $20.00 , the increase was from $65.00 to $70.00 per game from the TSSAA web site.

Yes some of us do get a 1099 from the high school season and the summer. And we are subcontractors
in the eyes of TSSAA. No one complains when football gets a raise, but heaven forbid if baseball or
softball get one.

If less than 2 outs, then the preceding runners would score. The batter/runner is out for not
properly obtaining Ist base.

There was an ejection in the Karns/A.C., game - no name or number was given .

dang it. i thought it was definately playable tonight. i think they keep on and keep on pushing it back. i dont know the reason but i know many places that could have easily been ready for tonight. especially them havin the infield tarp at AC /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="
Even with the infield tarp, the rain we have had today made the outfield on several fields (not just AC"s)
very dangerous.

Runner on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs. High chopper hit down the first base line, pitcher catches the ball and tags the batter for the 3rd out. In the mean time the runner on 3rd scores before the tag. Does the run count?????
No, batter/runner must reach first for the run to count. This is not a timing play.

Games have been cancelled at Oak Ridge

I'm a student at UT and in Knoxville for the summer. Just wondering if any of ya'll knew of any umpiring jobs maybe high school summer leagues. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Played four years of ball in mid TN and had a blast. Thanks for looking.
Go Vols!
Call Knoxville City Parks and Recreation to see if they know of any openings.

You are completely correct! That is a balk... It is the pitchers job to stay focused enough to complete the pitch! And I agree if that ball were to go over the backstop I would have called it a strike NO MATTER WHAT!!! There is no way a batter would just decide on his/her own to do this sort of play! That sort of play is a coaches play! So it would be a strike unless balk were to occur! Probably would have to coach all over me but he/she could take an early shower! /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />
That is not a balk. The batter stepped back from the plate, the batter can not cause the pitcher to balk
in this situation.

As long as the pitcher is the starter he can pitch in any extra inning game until its conclusion.
And as long it wasn't part of a double header and he did not pitch in the first game, he is elgible to
pitch.

QUOTE(Spark Plug @ Apr 23 2007 - 10:54 AM) 826443412I know for a fact how much umpires make and it is way too much. It is also going up next year and the year after. An online test, thats funny, its easy to pass a test when you have the book to use.
As a comparison? How can you compare teenage boys with men in there 20's, 30's, 40's etc? Also, teenage boys do not get paid to play. Umpires get paid to do a job, and in most cases, umpires do a great job. However, there are exceptions.
About screw-ups. Your right they are relative, but that doesn't make them ok. Missing an occasional ball or strike is one thing, but a pivotal play in the game is another.
I believe that "many" umps have to much pride. To say a coach is showing you up if they show you the rule book is stupid. If your wrong, then your wrong. You should swallow your pride and admit it.
I understand that umps are human and make mistakes. Players and coaches make mistakes, but let the actions of the players and coaches dictate the game. A call by an umpire SHOULD NOT DICATATE THE GAME!!! I'm not talking about balls and strikes. I'm talking about rule calls.
Calls should not be determined by the umpires attitude towards a certain coach or player. A strike zone should not widen because a batter gives the umpire a funny look. The strike zone should not shrink when a pitcher shows emotion that he did not get a call. Furthermore, a play at the bag or at the plate should not be determined by whether or not the umpire likes the coaches or players. To me, its a power trip when they do that. Its a "because I said so" mentality that gives some umpires a bad rep.
Don't you tell me this doesn't happen because if you do your full of crap. I know umpires do things like this. I've heard them admit it.
Just for your information, the fee does go up next year but there is not an increase until 2010. As far as emotions effecting
the strike zone, it sure does. And you are putting all umpires into the "THEM" catagory.

QUOTE(catsbackr @ Apr 13 2007 - 11:20 AM) 826436783Just a different point of view, don't crucify me....
How many HS kids go to the next level from an individual team? 5%-10%, maybe, at the most.
Let 'em pitch, their senior year in HS baseball will probably be the last time the ever get to pitch.
If you count warm ups between innings and bull pen prior to start of game, this pitcher threw will over 250
pitches. Too many in my book!

Soddy Daisy (Not Impressed)
in Baseball
Posted
I worked the Soddy Daisy and Tullahoma game and something was done if you will think about it. The head
coach called time immediately and talked to the batter to curtail any further incident. If you have a quick trigger over that then I would hate
to be in your game.
