    The field was released today:

    Tennessee teams represented:

    • Dobyns-Bennett (defending 4A champs)
    • Greeneville (defending 3A chanps)
    • Tennessee High (host school)
    • Fulton
    • Knox Webb

    Rest of the field:

    • Gate City (VA)
    • Twin Springs (VA)
    • Christ School (NC)
    • Myers Park (NC)
    • North Mecklenburg (NC)
    • Madison-Ridgeland Academy (MS)
    • Norcross (GA) (defending GHSAA 7A chanps)
    • Pace Academy (GA)
    • St. Francis Prep (NY)
    • Trinity (KY)
    • West Catholic (PA)
    • Westminster Academy (FL)
    • Tabernacle Baptist (Bahamas)

Hearing that this may be one of the weakest fields in recent memory with Norcross easily being the early favorite to win it.  Never too early to discuss the Arby's.  I am interested to see what my Indians can do in this though coming off the title last year.  We've lost a few but also picked up a nice transfer in the offseason.

I don't think the field is as weak as some say. All 3 NC teams are good and 2 of the 3 MP & NM are both very good. West Catholic may surprise some folks. Trinity may be the best team in Kentucky. They won the live period up there this summer and basically all the top programs from Ky and a few other states were there. MRA out of Miss is usually very solid, but I am not sure how they are supposed to be this year. Pace will be solid as well, and Norcross as mentioned has a great team.

  2. I am again helping organize a post Christmas tournament at Chipola College in Marianna, Fl (1 hour from the beach). 3 days, 3 games, 5 rooms, great facility, great atmosphere, great competition. Respond back to me on here or on twitter (CoachA523) and I can get you in touch with the tournament director. Thanks!

Strange times at BA...coach goes 30-1, loses a hard fought game in the semi finals to a really good opponent, then is asked to step down....a few days later, BA announces they are ending the Flight League after 9 years, which is by far the most popular and competitive youth basketball league in the Nashville area.  This BA team was good, but to be determined if they even have a future D1 player on the roster.  McNair is not.  Tanner might be, but TBD.  I didn't care for some of Hoppe's antics, but the guy was a good basketball coach.  Not sure what exactly happened here.

I have watched them since he took over and was very impressed. He may not have been Hubie Smith, but then again who is. Sounds like they got spoiled and expect to win a state title every year and it just doesn't work that way. I am in agreement that they don't have the super high level talent they've had in the past and yet still went 30-1 and lost in the semis and the year before I believe they lost in the championship game although I could be wrong on that one. If he wants to coach again I wouldn't think he would have any trouble finding a job. It will be interesting to see who BA hires as well. Tough gig for sure.

Not sure what basketball coaches you’re referring to, but I’ve never experienced that and I’ve been a ton of places.

I have coached in many places as well and totally agree. A team I coached went to the final 4 with 9 of our top 11 playing football. A different school went to the elite 8 with 10 of our top 11 playing football. In all fairness though except for the weightlifting part after football is over, football is rarely impacted at all with guys playing basketball, but basketball is impacted a large amount depending on how far the football team goes in the playoffs, but still I am all for my guys playing both as I think it helps us on the basketball court to have multiple football guys on our team.

Before Charlie Leonard got there they didn't have Mason Miller, Tony Madlock Jr. Aiden Applewhite, Zander Yates, or the other big kid. Without Applewhite they were a pretty beatable team at times this year.

Talent will win games regardless of the coach. Granted the coach can screw it up but talent will win 2/3 of the time.

Take Wooddale for example in 2015-2017 seasons Wooddale won 2 games. It was pitiful. The coach of that boys team left and became the girls coach at Houston High. More on that in a second (see below) Wooddale dropped to AA then the Lawson brothers come to play with their dad. Boom. State Champs. I've heard it from Keelon Lawson's former players at Hamilton (D1 and overseas pros) that he is a horrible coach. They years her won he had talent running out of the cracks.

Wooddale's former boys coach has a record of  112-18 in 4 years. Houston's girl's were loaded with talent. Same coach no talent at Wooddale.

Miller likes Germantown. He could have moved just about anywhere he wanted. He will probably get an assistant job where ever his son lands to play in college. He is a great guy and the perfect hire for Hosuton right now.

Never said talent didn’t win games, as a coach of 32 years with multiple state championships and studying the game at a super high level I certainly understand that very well. I also understand that coaching makes a huge difference when things are anywhere  close to equal, and I was judging Leonard on games I watched online vs. similar talented teams and Houston’s ball movement and defense (coaching) was very good. Mike Miller may end up being just as good or better, who knows. Like I said, I am rooting for him just also wanted to give credit where credit was due. I wouldn’t have commented if I hadn’t actually watched Houston play.

Houston HS hires former NBA Champion player & Univ of Memphis AC Mike Miller as new head coach. Miller's son Mason is a D1 wing prospect on the team. Big time hire.

I'm not saying at all that Miller isn't a "big time hire" nor am I saying he won't be successful, but obviously w/where the program was before Charlie Leonard got there to where it is now, HE was the big time hire for this program. Hopefully Miller will be able to continue the upward swing Houston is on. Hiring former NBA players has not worked more than it has worked, but I have a feeling Miller will do great and I certainly hope so. Being from Fl I am a fan!

    I think it’s a good job....

Desirable location, Very competitive district, Good admin (I like their AD and VP, J. Jones...don’t know any others), good facilities (school opened in...96?), good resources, good crowds @ home & away games and most importantly; good young men within their program!

I am an assistant at Franklin and my son is friends with a fair amount of their current and former players....I believe all of those young men are quality people.

They did graduate a lot of talent this past year but their 2020 class has a fantastic shooter and quality stretch big. Their middle school feeder school had a very strong team as well.

If you’d like more info, please provide a phone number via direct message and I’d gladly answer any specifics.

    Coach Anderson

Thanks for the great info. I'll pass it on to him and if he is interested beyond this I'll either DM you his number or my number. Thanks again!

  8. I see they went 16-12 this year. What kind of job is this? I know Pete Froedden was there before. One of my former assistants is interested. Just trying to get a little info for him. Thanks in advance.

Hasn't coached since he left White County.  Accepted the Cookeville job a couple of years back and then backed out.

Thanks for the info. Looking forward to seeing what he can do at York.

  10. Being from Florida I am very familiar with Coach Goporo. He had a good amount of talent when he was here in Fl, but did a great job with it. He ran great stuff offensively, changed defenses well, great game control and won several state titles in one of the toughest classes in Florida.

I was told he was not a good fit for the school at all.

I completely understand. I would think Grace Christian would be a good coaching situation for basketball with the success they've had in the past. Of course I am from the way outside looking in.

Mike White I believe was his name, was a college coach. There are 2 Grace Christian's, 1 in Knoxville and 1 in Franklin.

Mark White, yes he is a friend of mine so I was wondering where he might have gone to. He had told me how good of a job and situation it was coming from the JUCO ranks. Thanks for the help and yes that is why I was wondering.

Add Grace Christian to the list. They’ve had a revolving door for the past few years. Lots of good coaches leaving in multiple sports.

Who was coaching there? And is there more than 1 Grace Christian in Tn?

Many schools here only buy new uniforms every 3-5 years also.

This trend has nothing to do with shorts that don't fit. The kids see the NBA guys do it so they wanna be like them.

The problem comes in places (Memphis is a great example) where coaches don't care what shoes, shorts, socks, sleeves, etc... that kids wear.

There would be players showing up in a completely different uniform if it wasn't part of the rules.

Rolling shorts is no different trend than the baggy shorts and black socks that started so long ago with the Fab 5 at Michigan. It's a trend and a simple Google search will prove that.

This may and probably is all true, but my comment was made from personal experience of taking over several different jobs that the previous coach left basically no money in the account and having some young guys who actually couldn't fit the shorts that were available and no money to buy new unis or even shorts. My teams wear the same shoes, no wrist bands, arm sleeves, head bands etc. we are uniform. I am old school when it comes to that, but to punish a young man (sometimes very young) for not being large enough to fit into the shorts available seems a bit absurd to me. If they all fit or if they are a sponsored school (nike elite or adidas) then they should have proper sizes easily available. There are cases though where rolling the shorts is necessary, but in turn I do realize that most of the time that it is done is for attention and because of the trend. I wouldn't know if they do it in the NBA or not as I refuse to watch it because of the attention seeking selfishness shown in the league among other reasons. Also something many coaches don't do is make each player wear the correct sizes so sometimes certain players are left without an option although it really is the coach who is to blame so I definitely realize there is more than one side to this story and I respect what you are saying.

I would certainly think Bearden would have a shot in AAA.

Bearden would have to have a shot I would think. They played East tough last year for most of the game and return a ton of their lineup. I don't think they lost a game this summer just keeping up with them on twitter, could definitely be wrong there though. Still they have to be in the mix.

Menees said this rule will be strictly enforced. Buy shorts that fit. His words...

It is easy to say "buy shorts that fit" but if you buy shorts that fit your team this year then the following year you may not have as many heavier players or you might have a plethora of younger guys make the team because your team was senior heavy. This is high school and I coach in Fl and we only buy new uniforms once every 4 or 5 years so the change in the size of players each year will vary immensely. I am not for individuality at all as you wear team shoes or you don't play in our program, but sometimes the shorts just don't fit. I guess if you can't "buy shorts that fit" you get your players removed for their shorts sagging which I also don't allow, but if they are too big then it might happen during a play or even worse they fall all the way down. I just think there are much bigger issues and also it gives power hungry referees something more to look for that they can show their authority over. To me common sense should prevail. But like the saying goes, common sense isn't so common anymore.

He coached both the boy’s and later the girl’s teams at Grace Christian Academy in Knoxville. He coached in Florida prior to coming to Knoxville. I think he may have even coached Tim Tebow. His son is coaching at Tipton-Rosemary Academy.

Where is Pridemore coach in Fl.? I am from Fl. Tebow played at Nease in St. Augustine so I'll do some digging and see if he coached there. I know a very good coach (Bud Beech) coached at Nease for years until recently so that would surprise me if he was there, but it could have been within the timeframe. If Lawson is the only player East lost to transfer, they will be very very good I assure anyone.

With everyone leaving Memphis East, I think that Bartlett will now be the team to beat out of Memphis along with Southwind in AAA

Who all has left East and to where? I know Lawson left to go to Oak Hill. I didn't know of others. They looked great according to reports I got this summer. I know Bearden actually went undefeated this summer at several very good team camps!
