  1. Wow, there are some strong opinions about this topic. It seems to me that naming an individual high school coach as the only local coach who can prepare girls for the D1 level is insulting to many of the other area high school volleyball coaches who spend more time preparing, planning, and coaching than anyone would even imagine. I know I wasn't the poster that was asked to name other High level coaches in the area, but I believe that the programs at Farragut, CAK, Knoxville. Catholic, OakRidge, and Bearden to name a few have great coaches who teach court and team skills that would translate well to any volleyball program at any division. This is not to take anything away from the Webb coach, who is fantastic. Also, you can't beat Anderson County coaches for instilling a terrific work ethic and love of the game in their players. It seems to me that their is no definitive answer - each athlete has to determine what she values and pick the route that best meets her needs. There should be a good mutual working relationship between club and hs coaches, with club providing the programs they wish but not pulling a player one way or the other.

  2. I think both Coach Williams and Coach Jones are people of integrity. I would be very cautious about accusing either of them of breaking the rules or recruiting unless I had irrefutable evidence of those facts. I would also be very careful about saying that these coaches have a "history of breaking the rules". Past history doesn't indicate that at all.

  3. The Knoxville area is indeed fortunate to have many fine volleyball coaches in the area. It will be interesting to see who fills both the Farragut and Oak Ridge positions. In the case of both schools, the new coaches will have big shoes to fill.

A few thoughts about some of ORCat's observations. I know that Karns and Knoxville Catholic did not meet head to head this year, but I wonder what is Coach Williams' record against Coach Jones at Catholic? Also, did Karns have to vacate any wins from the 2008 season due to playing an ineligible player? Just some random thoughts..........

  4. I just wanted to say a huge thank-you for a great season to the Knoxville Catholic Lady Irish. Our seniors - Becca, Casey, Colleen, Jessica, Megan, and Sarah - have given us many smiles and great memories over the past years. Some were with the program since their freshman year, and some joined along the way, but all of you have blessed us with your presence. You are truly ladies of character, both on and off the court. While injuries and illnesses made much of this season challenging, you met all obstacles with grace. You will be missed next year, but please know that you will always be welcomed back!

  5. play4keeps,

I second what you said! /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> We've got the state tournament volleyball fever! If I get any updates from the Boro, I will be sure to pass them on.

  6. Sorry, I forgot to give my predictions for the AA championship. Based on last year and new motivation, I think the teams to beat are Greenbriar and AC. Greenbriar, as AC does, has a great nucleus of returning experienced players. They will be VERY hard to beat. However, I think AC will dominate their district and region. And when they get to the "murf", they will beat all of the others there hands down. They have great athletes and very motivated coaches. Mark it down! The "Mavs" will get their 2'nd state title in 2007.

    Well.......?

  7. Congratulations to Notre Dame for winning a hard-fought battle in the A/AA championship game. As a Knoxville Catholic fan, I wish the outcome would have been a little different, but ND and their fans deserve much respect.

To our KCHS seniors - Natalie Deuschle, Karen Wolf, Mallory Mrozik, Kristen Hall, and Catherine Bodie (who came back from knee surgery to attend the substate and state matches) - WE WILL MISS YOU!!!!! You all have so much to be proud of! You and your families have been wonderful these past years. You will ALWAYS be welcome on the Knoxville Catholic bench.

Next year should be exciting. KCHS has great juniors who will be real leaders next year, and some talented and athletic freshmen and sophomores. I think District 4A/AA will be up for grabs next year. AC has many returning starters, and Stone Memorial has a very fine team. CAK has a lot of players back, and they took KCHS to game 5 in the District!!! I am looking forward to next season already.

We saw some fantastic teams this tournament. My hat goes off to all the teams we played. The fans were wonderful, and we saw some great volleyball from teams like DCA, USJ, ND, and Greenbrier. Next year should be an exciting year in A/AA.

    GO LADY IRISH!!!!!!! :thumb:

Again, congratulations to ND. KCHS - We love you!!!!!

  8. There is NO way that Greenbriar is flying under the radar after whipping the defending state champs in 3. My friends from KC that are relatively "new" to the state tourney may not be up on how good GB is, but they are real tough.

I don't think Coach Jones, Coach Stiles, or the players at KC are going to be guilty of overlooking any team in the tournament. The teams KC played in the District, Regional, and Substate were playing mighty good vb, and KC knows that you can't take any matchup for granted. Their district is going to be a real battle next year!

KC knows how good GB is, but first, they have to face good teams by the names of Notre Dame, USJ, and DCA. That's a pretty full plate at this time.

KC has great fans, great girls as players, and two coaches who have been around vb for awhile. Knowing them personally as I do, I can say with certainty that they don't take other teams for granted. I just don't want a poster who is from another school to imply that KC doesn't respect other teams in this tournament.

Yeah, KC is new to the state tournament but, hey, traditions have to start somewhere!!!

Congratulations and safe travel to all teams going to the Boro.

  9. Knoxville Catholic defeated South Greene tonight in three. South Greene played hard-nosed, determined defense, and these girls should be proud of their play. Congratulations to KC on a great season! Good luck in the Boro!!!!!!!!!

  10. Glad to hear that AC's middle blocker will be able to play today. It is never good to see a player injured. Hopefully KC's MB is OK, as well.

Let's not confuse the postings of parents, fans, and (I wonder) coaches on this forum with the girls on the teams. When posters say that KC talks a good game, just remember that these posts don't come from the girls or the coaches. The girls do their talking by their play on the court, which is where it belongs. Hopefully, the girls don't even know about this forum.

Sometimes I can't help but wonder, however, if some posters here are actually coaches as well. Some seem to have such a personal stake in the performance of a school, that it seems to surpass even parental support. If so, I would sincerely hope that they would not disrespect girls or coaches from another team.

This is an exciting time of year!!! All schools need to be congratulated for making it this far.

  11. Stone Memorial and CAK are to be commended on great seasons. The matches in tonight's tournament were tough, and in many cases, came down to the wire.

It looks like District 4A-AA will be truly competitive next year. Best of luck to Knoxville Catholic and Anderson County in the Regional Tournament next week. It looks like KC will play Alcoa and AC will play Seymour in the first round of the regional.

  12. In the first round of the 4-AA tourney tonight, Anderson County defeated Stone Memorial, and Knoxville Catholic defeated Christian Academy of Knoxville. In the championship game, Knox Catholic defeated Anderson County. Congratulations to Knoxville Catholic Lady Irish on a great season!

  13. Again, I truly feel that calling out programs and girls in this forum is completely uncalled for. The tension between AC and KC just needs to go away. Both schools have good programs. Jeff Harshbarger has proven his mettle as a coach, since he has been the coach for a good many years, and Mike Jones has proven to be one of the best club coaches SMJVC has. Coach Jones has only been at KC for three years, so he hasn't had the time to produce the program at KC that Coach Harshbarger has at AC - yet. This rivalry has the potential to be a fun one, not an adversarial one. Let the girls play, let the assessments of whether teams have improved or not since August fall to the coaches and players of the teams in question, and let's just have fun!

  14. It sounds like many of these matches have been outstanding. Thanks to all who are reporting scores! Sometimes I wonder if we ought to choose our words for these posts with the thought in mind that any of these girls who play volleyball, no matter the team, could be watching us. As parents we tend to get a little emotional when our children are involved, but I wonder how my child would feel if she read some of this stuff. Let's leave the assessments of effort and expectation to the individual teams, give props where they are due, and just enjoy the game.
