Juveniles charged with vandalizing local business

Five juveniles have been charged with vandalizing a city business earlier this month.

According to information released by the Elizabethton Police Department, an investigation began on Sept. 2 into vandalism at Pal's fast food restaurant, located at 413 E. Elk Ave.

"Employees of the business reported finding graffiti on the menu boards. The graffiti consisted of profanity and derogatory comments directed towards law enforcement," states EPD Sgt. Michael Merritt in a report on the incident. "Later the same day the employees called back to report finding additional graffiti on the top of the building where the Pal's signature food items -- shake, fries, hotdog and hamburger -- are located. The employees and officers had also found a silver chain and pendant hanging from the french fries on the top of the building."

Merritt states in his report that through the investigation, officers determined that there were five juveniles that had assembled in the gravel lot adjacent to the Twin's Field on West Mill Street and then proceeded to Pal's to commit the vandalism.

"The juveniles then scaled the building to 'leave their mark' on the oversized food items. The information received during the interviews led officers to question the juveniles about the silver chain and pendant," states Merritt in a report on the incident. "Officers then discovered that four of the juveniles had been to the Elizabethton High School prior to going to Pal's. The four juveniles had gained access to the school gymnasium and eventually to the football dressing room. Once inside the dressing room one juvenile took a silver chain and pendant left in a football player's locker and another juvenile took a football helmet."

On Wednesday, Merritt filed Juvenile Petitions in Carter County Juvenile Court charging the five juveniles with vandalism under $500. Additionally, Merritt filed Juvenile Petitions against four of the juveniles charging them with burglary in connection with burglary and theft of items from Elizabethton High School.

  2. I watched this story with great interest, from beginning to end, and it is simply amazing to watch a man change into the very thing he was fighting so hard against. Sad, really.

I like Mr. Ed as a person but, he has NEVER been a strong supporter of the EHS sports programs. Over the years there have been several coaches who wanted to coach at Elizabethton but, he always told me "we hire teachers not coaches". In other words, they hire teachers who will coach instead of coaches who can teach. BIG difference.

See you in the funny papers!

  3. Sports TV, why don't you just give Hampton the credit they deserve. The Johnson Co. team that Hampton beat would beat Elizabethton every week this season. And I'm sorry if the behavior of teenagers annoys you. If you don't want to hear it, then you'll probably have to stay home because nothings going to change.

I didn't mean to leave the impression that Hampton didn't deserve credit. On the contrary they showed great character in their defeat of Johnson County, especially Dustin Millhorn! That boy can really move!

Yes, the language I heard at Johnson County did annoy me but, that's not the main issue here. The main issue is not only is this type of behavior increasing but it is being more and more accepted. Do you want you children or grandchildren to grow up around this vulgarity? I don't. We, as adults, need to step up to our responsibility and do whatever is necessary to stop the filth coming out of our young people instead of just saying "nothing's going to change".

  4. Same ole same ole. It takes 3-4 years just to rebuild the Cyclones just in the strength department. Some of the backs was outliftin the linemen last season and the year before. That says alot! The linemen aint' mean they are softies. It takes time working with the young guys to change that thinkin. the QB is a pocket passer not a runner so how can u stay in the pocket and only have 3-4 secs and on top of that ur best WR don't want the ball if he's gona get hit. Your backs don't want to run inside (tween the tackles) cause they take a beatin. Ain't no cure but time but u can't throw it on the QBs shoulder. I gotta point to the line. Same story as last year and the year before. Everybody got all hyped up about 88 & 77 but they are no shows. Good luck to 10 & 80. Toughest dudes on the team! THE BADDEST!

Are you serious??? You're actually saying that #77 is a no show??? You must be on some good drugs, especially during the games. Ellis is one of the few that the opposing team doesn't want to come up against. Have you noticed when he is playing defense the offensive line double or even triple teams him? Have you noticed also that the opposing team will run the ball away from him? Have you noticed when Elizabethton runs the ball to his side they usually gain yardage? Saying he's a no show is absolutely ridiculous!

I do agree we can't throw it all on the QB's shoulders. He's made good improvements since the loss to Science Hill. If he continues to gain confidence and to start looking for more than one receiver, he will become a quarterback who can help lead the team.

Elizabethton is a little weak this year but, not because of a lack of heart or desire to win. Go Cyclones!

See you in the funny papers!

  5. And they darn sure better mot mess with the bulldog cuz they would DEFINATELY get every tooth in its mouth!!!!! I HATE to say it but its true!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I sure was wrong. Elizabethton would have beaten the Johnson County team that played against Hampton. But, the JC team that played Elizabethton could have beaten most teams in Northeast Tennessee.

Elizabethton should have been the more dominate team however, it wasn't their night. I hate to say it but, Elizabethton may have been out coached. JC had a good game plan and they seemed to stick with it. They ran the ball, then they ran the ball, then they ran the ball again. Elizabethton's defense was on the field most of the first half. By the end of the game E's defense (for the most part) was worn down.

I said last week that if Johnson County expected to compete this year, they would have to clean up their game. Well, that's exactly what they did! You gotta hand it to them, they stepped up to the challenge.

On a sad note...I believe I heard more cursing from the Johnson County fans on Friday night than I heard all last year! Not just from the stands. I was bombarded with bad language while in my car in line to get tickets, on the way to the stands from my car, in line at the concession stand, during the game & after the game while walking to my car. As far as I know, none was directed toward me. Cursing just seemed to be a part of the Johnson County dialog, especially from the teenagers. I'm not talking about mild language here. I'm talking about "######" this and "f" that. While in line at the concession stand there were 2 guys and a girl discussing what they were going to do to each other. Very loudly and very graphically. I don't know what made them think that everyone around them wanted to know the details of their perversions. Maybe the Johnson County school system needs to start teaching ENGLISH to their students so they want be speaking GARBAGE. Also, education starts AT HOME!

See you in the funny papers!

  6. Get, Having a son in his last year and struggling so.......... now you know where I was last year but with no leadership at the helm. At least this season some teaching has begun and a new 'mind-set' is being put in place in the Cyclone camp. All joking aside, I appreciate our past and wish you well with your son. Good luck!

    Regards

    GO CYCLONES!

    Hey Glee and All!

    I'm back and PUMPED!

First...The Johnson County/Hampton game was one of the sloppiest games I've seen. I know it's early, but too many fumbles and missed tackles & blocks (H-#77). Both teams will have to clean up their game if they expect to compete.

Second...Elizabethton without a doubt will beat Johnson County. Although a little short on experience, Coach Whitten will have his team playing with pride and determination behind the likes of the quarterback Anderson and Ellis on the line. Elizabethton also has talented players in many other positions. Johnson County is simply to short on skilled positions to seriously compete with E. Good luck to both teams!

    That's all for now.

See ya in the funny papers!

  7. I still look for a great game by the Cyclones. This team is good and maybe we could support them all instead of being deadheads at the game. Why not drop it SportsTV. Seems like no one thought too much of your idea :thumb:

    Let's "Tell The Truth"...

"I agree that right now Smith is better at QB than Anderson, but if no one else will step up and be a capable RB, they might want to consider alittle moving around in the backfield. If no one will step up and be a good RB, they might HAVE to make a move... But I'm not the coach, so..."

    Time to move on now.

  8. I don’t think I agree with that way of thinking anymore. Confidence in your team, in your coaches, and in yourself has a lot to do with the success of a good team. Getting crushed two weeks in a row regardless of what size school it was doesn’t do much for the confidence of a team. And then you get all of these speculations of: “Smith shouldn’t be the quarterback, we need a productive RB, someone needs to call some coaches and players out, and Smith is a ball hog and has happy feet”. And then players start quitting the team, your star player starts pointing fingers in the media, and you start questioning the credentials of coaches…ALL of these things are BIG distractions for a high school football team, and keeps them from being focused on the task at hand (and the bottom line of it all)….WINNING GAMES!!!! Can you honestly say that any of the issues that have been brought up on this thread would be issues if the Cyclones were 2-0 or 1-1 verses winless? And you opened the season last year with the same two teams…did It really help or hurt the team…you still loss to THS 21-7 in your conference opener and later on to South…the two teams you were expected to loose to. DB AND SHHS are two tall trees to climb for any of MLC teams at this point in the rotation (if you know what I mean) and what exactly are they preparing you for…East, Central, or maybe Unicoi???

Just face it you don’t see the Jason Whitten or the Vince Redd caliber players cycling through our schools right now and to be quite honest…I think we sometime expect too much from these kids when you compare their overall talent level and size to that of the rest of the state. And before you comment on my last statement…tell me…how many football players has this area put in major D1 schools sense Redd and Whitten…or even before???

High school Football is a competitive recreational sport…and for 90% of these kids that’s all it will ever be. Don’t expect them to fight the battles YOU loss in high school or to make up for your shortcomings or chase your shattered dreams. Why not give them something to tell their kids and grandkids besides “when I was in school son, we didn’t win many games but we sure did play some good 5A teams”!!

I would put the bigger stronger teams on the schedule for preparation for the post season, but they wouldn’t be the first two games out the box!!!

    Very nice commentary. Well taken!

  9. True. Cow Town circle up. TV came on here and got everyone stirred up with his moronic trouble making BS and no one has come to his rescue. You better get your kids together and you parents need to stop the useless bickering. The Cyclones are better than what you might think and your QB is tops. Leave him alone. He is a warrior and a QB not to mention one of the top QBs around this area. He also happens to be one of the top FS. GOSH! You people should be thrilled.

My intention was not to stir everybody up. After all, the only ones who got stirred up were you and Glee. Believe it or not...my opinions count as much as yours. You can take both of our opinions and 50 cents and get a cup of coffee. I'm not a parent. I don't even have a kid who plays football. Maybe you need to have some respect for other's "moronic" opinions. Another thing, I don't need anyone to "come to my rescue". I'm a big boy and can stand on my own. And lastly, The cyclones are in Elizabethton. Maybe "Cow Town" is easier to spell for you.

  10. I agree with Powr, with that pressure on Smith, if he didn't scramble he's got 10-12 sacks. You've got a QB but your line has to do the run block and the pass block to get the job done. That was plain to see. Send Smith to SH!! This TV guy is a moron.

I thought you were too classy to call someone a "moron".

  11. I guess you'd have to be a fool not wanting Smith to touch the ball every play. QB is the way although I'm sure he'd be a great RB if that is where the team needed him. I figured out his passing % from DB & SH and it is 47% (without figuring drops). That's if the papers are right and I'm sure they are close. I don't think he'll see a better set of LB/DB and safeties to go against in his next 8 games. Yea, he got 3 ints. Friday but one was deflected off of his recievers hands and another his reciever was tripped and fell heading to the ball. The last was his. Smith does take off sometimes, but it is due to quick penetration of the defensive line. DUHHH...... Other times are roll outs for passing & runs. He is one of the top QBs in the area and you would be nuts to have him on a team and not have him touching and spreading the ball around. Seven different recievers caught the ball Friday night but somewhat of a running game is a must.

I guess that's enough, but the guy needs some credit for what he goes through. I guess I see your happy feet as being able to scramble because when he has been given time in the pocket he has sit back and struck his target. 47% ain't bad vs. DB and SH.

SportsTV, I think you're on your own on that one. :thumb:

Were you at Friday nights game against Science Hill? Elizabethton does need a running back. Why not Smith? He obviously runs better than he throws. 47% completions with 3 ints. is not good in any book. Whether it's called or not I don't know but, he rarely steps up into the pocket. Scrambling is a must and he his good at it but, when it's time to pass then step up and pass. Don't get me wrong. Smith is definitely a good athelete but, he would be better utilized as a running back. He has the speed and the moves. This would help to balance the offense. I also believe Smith doesn't need to be playing defense. This time would be better used in rest and preparation for the next series. As I stated before, by the fourth quarter he was worn out. It's just too much to ask of him.

  12. How are the Eliz. coaches going to spell Smith. It has to happen. Ive heard that his backup at qb, anderson?, has potential to be a great qb. but hes just not as explosive running the ball as smith. Smiths backup at FS, #9, wouldnt come up on the run like smith. but i guess thats why smith is such a special player.

if the coaches give him a rest at either of these positions, he will be a much better player. even if the rest is a quarter.

but time for my pick. THS is too powerful up front for the 'Betsy D-Line.

    THS - 21

    EHS - 13

From what I've seen so far...Elizabethton would be much better served by Smith as a running back. Smith for sure has a big heart on the field but his feet are way too happy for an effective quarterback. By putting the Anderson kid in at quarterback (who seems much calmer and methodical) then Smith would be freed up to gain alot of yards as a back since running is what he seems to be best at. With Smith moving around so much out of the pocket, the offensive line can't do their job effectively because they don't know where Smith is going to be after the ball is snaped. Therefore, he ends up running about every other play. By the fourth quarter he is so tired that his passing game suffers due to his accuracy declining. :thumb:

  13. From what I saw on Friday night, Elizabethton's offensive line will be one of the best in the confrence. This will be a great asset to the good quarterbacks, running backs and receivers. If they run the ball and throw short passes to the left side they will get some good blocking, especially from the Ellis kid. Seems they do better with long pass plays to the right side. Overall I believe their offensive line will play a BIG part in their success. If the defensive line improves over the next few games, Elizabethton could be headed to a confrence title.

  14. Smith did a heck of a job for Elizabethton but had to play both ways and was totally exhausted. They'll get him rest this week on defense as their game goes. Point is, my boy got a good look at Smith after the game in the locker room. He was bruised up pretty bad, but hey, that's the way he likes it. Competitor :thumb: Phillips is bigger and will probably run more (does Phillips run a 4.5 40?). It will take a BIG toll on him as well and he'll probably take a worse beating. Good thing he watches his defense play, but he'll get beat up by DBs DEFENSE as well.

Hey "Tell The Truth", I'm new to the area. Will the DB vs. South game be a good one to go tommorrow night? Does your boy play for Elizabethton? I saw them play last night on cable tv. Channel 13 I think. What position does he play & what number is he? That quarterback (#8) for Eliz. looked pretty good. Will the Eliz. Science Hill game be on cable also? I hope to be able to come out and watch in person if I can get some time off from work. Hope you guys do well this season!
