  1. Well I don't think there's much to talk about here given the 48-6 beatdown in the first matchup a month ago.  With that said, it was good to see JB get a win in the playoffs after getting bounced by SP in round 1 the past 2 years.  It's the first road playoff win for JB since 2010 when we beat Perry County in the semifinals to go the championship game.  As I've said all year, we're better than we were last year but just not good enough to compete with the top teams.  But I'm happy for the players to get the playoff win.  It's more than a lot of recent JB teams can say.

JB is just 2-7 all-time against Gordonsville and their last win was in 2015.  The past few games haven't been close and I don't expect this one to be either but who knows...maybe we can keep it respectable.

A quick side note...with last weeks playoff win JB coach Tom Adkins has won a playoff game in 4 straight decades (every decade he has coached).

  2. Got a call this afternoon with the terrible news.  I sure do hate to hear this.  I had some good times with Mike back in the day when his son played for cascade and had a lot of battles with Jo Byrns.  He didn’t care for me early on but we became good friends for a time.  Time went on and we didn’t talk much anymore once regions realigned and he started doing the radio thing.  I’ll remember the good times and he’ll always be one of my favorites from coacht!  I’ll be sure to do my part to carry on his passion for high school football.  We both loved 1A football the most!  Thanks Mike!!!

  3. CC wins this one.  We just don't have it again this year.  I think we're better than last year but not enough to make a difference.  Don't expect a big crowd.  Community support is down when you aren't winning.  I keep thinking we'll rebound with another run of talent but it's just not happening.  I thought we'd be pretty solid these next few years but  some of the talent left and it looks like more of the same.  We'll be back at some point but not this year.

Here's a bit of info on Jo Byrns.  Compliments of D'Stew.

    Jo Byrns Red Devils
    City- Cedar Hill
    County- Robertson
    Enrollment- 342
Last Season’s Record- 2-9, lost to South Pittsburg in first round
    Region- 4-1A
Head Coach- Tom Adkins (177-120 in 26 years at Jo Byrns)
    Offensive Coordinator- Tom Adkins
    Defensive Coordinator- Tyler Estep
    Offense- Spread/Multiple
    Defense- 6-2/3-4
    Returning Starters on Offense/Defense- 11 (5 Off/6 Def)
    Last Playoff Appearance- 2019
Key Returnees- Jake Chennault (RB/DB, Sr.), Ryan Dowlen (QB/DB, Jr.), Brian Salas (FB/LB, Jr.), Eli Farmer (RB/DB, Sr.), Emmanuel Barbee (TE/DE, Sr.), Garrett Little (OT/DT, Sr.), Bailey Serignet (TE/FB/DE, Soph.)
Key Losses- Rudy Tucker (OL/LB), Bobby Ogg (TE/LB/K ), Noelan Woods (WR/LB), Maxie Owens (LB), Matthew Henegar (OL/DL), Jacob Richards (OL/ DE)
Streak Going Into 2020- one game losing streak

Jake Chennault is out for the year.  Kid has gotten hurt every year and never got to develop like a lot of folks thought.  He had great size and athletic ability but couldn’t stay healthy.  Also Emmanuel Barbee isn’t on the team and was expected to be one of our better players.

I can’t say we have any real strengths.  QB has really struggled this year, lost our SR RB very early,  SR TE isn’t on the team, starting freshmen up front.  I think we’re better on defense but struggle there as well.

To go with the previous two answers, success breeds success. Many of the people that played in years past have kids and grandkids that play today. That doesn't always mean that you'll be good, but it does help.

A community that supports you and follows you.

A coaching staff that knows what they're doing and love it as well as love being a part of this kind of tradition.

Also attitude plays into it some. We go into it expecting to be good, or if in a down year, expect to be good again soon. The mental aspect can be as important as the physical one.

A lot of truth here...one issue that hurts JB at times is that there are “better” options around here.  I say better because it’s subjective but my point is there are quite a few nearby options.  Some of our alumni has sent their kids to private schools and they could have helped us tremendously.  Davidson Academy and JPII are the most hurtful to us but it’s not like they are taking a bunch of players, but 1 or 2 here and there adds up.

Yeah it’s been since 2010 we met at the championship game.  I understand the long drive for a lopsided game.  It seems a lot of teams are playing a lot of freshman and sophomores this year.  Because we have so many players people don’t realize we have a lot of freshman and sophomores too.  We have around 19 Sophomores and 18 Freshman.  A couple sophomores including standout J. Mount start or are in the mix.  We have 3 EXTREMELY talented freshman backs, and a freshman QB who is a standout baseball player.

Yeah it sounds like SP has excellent young talent.  Our sophomore class is really small but we have a decent freshman class size...maybe 10-11?  They’re pretty talented but not really at the skill positions.  Our freshman RB went to Springfield this year so that sucks for us.  We’ll have to find a QB in the next couple years.  Should have some nasty linemen though.

Always good to hear from our buddy Moto. We’ve had our share of down times as well Moto. In our history we usually don’t stay down for long, but we’ve had some really bad teams as well. 1983, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 2000, 2004, 2014.  Even in 2015 we went 7-3 and got beat by 30 points in the quarterfinals. Now I will say we’ve only had 2 sub .500 seasons in the past 20 years though.

Yeah Y’all’s bad years are a lot different than most.

  8. Roy didn’t need to create a website for this game because there’s nothing to talk about.  Jo Byrns is bad once again this year.  We’re back to being a perennial playoff bottom feeder.  It’s frustrating but it’s part of being a 1A school...unless you’re South Pittsburgh.

Our freshman class is the best we’ve had in probably 10 years but will it be good enough to compete for a championship in a few years, I don’t know.  We will start quite a few freshmen and sophomores in this one and the score will reflect it.

The stat line from last week mentioned Groves had 11 carries for some big yardage and scores. I know he played WR last year but have they moved him to RB or is it just dependent on the situation? If the kid is truly all they have, I dont blame them on moving him to RB. Get the ball into your playmaker's hands they easiest way possible.

Also, is he a Jr or Sr. this year?

Last week he played RB, WR, & TE on offense.  I think he played WR more often than not.  He’s either getting the ball or being used as a decoy on most plays.  He’s a Jr.

Groves is overrated and gives about 40% effort on about half the plays. Trousdale 35-6

I disagree with the first part but 100% agree with the second.  That’s why I said athlete, not football player.  He’s a really gifted athlete.  You’d be hard pressed to find a better athlete around here.  But to your point, we’ve all seen better play out of lesser talent.
