  1. "Humility in victory and grace in defeat".

I read this in the recent Sports Illustrated in the context of the recent Masters golf tournament.

Having seen many sports events in East TN, not just soccer, I'm happy to say that I've witnessed humility and grace most times.

Maybe that's what makes a departure from this so noteworthy?

  2. West 3 Farragut 2

I really haven't understood why Far. and others have been ranked above West all season. West ended very strong last year, winning District going on to sub-state, beating Catholic, Farragut, and Bearden along the way. Lost only 3 Seniors. But I understand each year is a new year, but anyway, rankings are what they are but they mean a little bit more as the season progresses, and it all shakes out. West is hitting on all cylinders and looks like a much better team this year than last. Good game, tonight though, and Farragut plays tough and will still have to be dealt with in the District playoffs.

    Bean,

Based on this result, I'd expect Knox West to move up next week. Congratulations to the girls on what I'm sure was a very interesting and exciting game.

  3. Hearsay scores:

    St Agnes - 2

    St George's - 1

    Houston - 11

    Bolton - 1

    Actual scores:

    Briarcrest - 0

    Saint Benedicts - 0

Both teams had numerous opportunities on goal and played hard for 80 minutes. Each team took turns having 5 to 10 minute heavy possession timeframes. This was a big district game for both teams.

Soccermom, is St. Agnes as good as last year? Even if they're close it's good because they were pretty darn good last year. How does such a small school produce such powerhouse teams?

  4. Ok, I'm going to bend a bit here. First off, they are all very good schools. It may be that Baylor accepts a broader range of academic student than GPS but all these schools are top notch in meeting the needs of academically minded student-athletes. Just as someone shouldn't choose a school based on soccer, don't choose a school only on any certain reputation, scholastic or otherwise. These schools are all very different. Some kids will thrive in any of them, some kids won't. There is no right answer and you can tell this by seeing children from the same family in different schools. The private schools may offer more opportunity (hence the $$) but a kid who wants to succeed will do well wherever.

In the end, the parents are much more important than the school. I'll stop here and get back to soccer.

We could call tonight's game between GPS and Oak Ridge the "Academic Bowl". Two of the State's best academic programs, public and private, are playing. I am sincere in making this point. I think it's great that these terrific academic schools have terrific soccer programs as well.

  5. No. You're not missing something. That is Canes attempt at humor in response to the other thread. Notice the period. He started this thread and is basically saying that he cannot recall or that there is any such thing as "great officiating calls."

I read one Canes post where he claimed that the expression "great officiating calls" is an oxymoron.

  6. Just wanted to take a moment and ask for your prayers- LaVergne High School sophomore goalkeeper, Jaelyn Todd, was injured during last night's game. While playing a fantastic game against Independence High School, Jaelyn went after a ball and collided with another player with about 6 minutes left in the game. Good news - Jaelyn and LHS managed to save the goal. Bad news, this young lady was admitted to the hospital last night with 2 broken ribs and a punctured lung. She appears to be doing well, other than being bored and sore.

Freshman keeper Kristen Hughes came in cold off the bench, and did a good job as well. Unfortunately, Independence managed to score a goal with approximately 1 minute left on the board. Final score: Independence 1 - LaVergne 0.

Yes, definitely! Sounds like a courageous young lady! Let's hope she returns to action soon. I'm sure her teammates miss her.

  7. No. Blame must be assigned. Referees get it first as a rule because they are at best half right, and half wrong. Sometimes the coaches will be blamed, never the players. Always the referee. Yes that must be the culprit. Losing parents have perfect understanding of the game and everything that should be called or not called. ROFL.

Only half right? Does that mean we'd be just as well off to flip a coin for calls?

  8. Heard Cleveland Lost a D1 Competitive player this year that played with them last year, otherwise looking pretty good and some new talent on the freshman squad.

That would be Emily Jones. Outstanding player. Now playing for Belmont.

  9. Again, what I would like to know is the "WHY" behind the rule change. Was there really a problem with this? Enough to enforce a big rule change? I have been coaching for 15 years and never ran into a jersey/uniform issue. Bumble-bee socks, tie dyed socks, lightning jerseys, etc. we figured out who was on our team and who was on the other.

It's like the rapper / actor: Ludicrous

  10. Assuming that this was from camp at UTC, Notre Dame had some players that did not attend camp, but the mid-observation is correct...Danielle Ciabattone (Lee University) has left some mighty big shoes to fill...

Cary Lieper was another huge loss.

  11. 8/10- Hardin Valley @ Webb 7:PM

    8/12- Hardin Valley @ CAK 7:PM

    8/14- Hardin Valley @ Farragut 6:PM

pk..is HV going to be as good as I think they might be? Last year, they really showed signs that they would break out and become one of the better teams in the area. Now with the high school finally being filled out and the the team not so thin in the upper classes, they should be pretty good, right? They seemed to be well coached last year and the athlete base seems to be be pretty deep.

  12. I was a little surprised recently to read the rusults of a poll which showed that fans in Europe and Latin America favor electronic monitoriing / replays even more than Americans. And a solid majority of Americans favor some electronic replay.

I predict that at the very least you will see electronic confirmation of goals in the next world cup.

  13. Canes,

Several big mistakes in recent games obviously.

My first reaction is that the WC needs to be "Americanized" by instituting US rules for electronic review.

But on second thought, we have to try think about the other countries who may not feel the same way about instituting these changes.

We (in the US) may be extremely indignant about the injustice associated with these obvious errors, but the rest of the world may be more comfortable living with injustice.

Add to this possible cultural issue the issue of the long, unchanging history of soccer around the world, and you can start to understand the massive momentum that needs to be overcome.

Having said all this, a reasonable first step that would be acceptable to anyone (I would think) is using electronic means to verify a goal.

  14. One of the bigger stories of the 2010 boys season is the emergence of the new Hardin Valley Academy as a team to be reckoned with. I think the same thing will happen with the girls team. I'm not saying they'll win the region, or even the district, but I do think they will increasingly press the traditional E. TN Region 2 AAA powers (Bearden, Oak Ridge, Farragut).

  15. Admiral2010--you seem like a proud young man. I hope you and your teammates (I'm assuming you are a player) rise up and play your best soccer in the next week and a half, and show everyone that Farragut, 2010 version, is a team to be remembered.

But you cannot focus on the doubts and attacks from others. This will only distract you from what has made you so good, which is excellent and consistent execution on the field. I believe it was Anson Dorrance who once was asked what the most important play in soccer was. He answered that the most important play is the next play.

Direct any anger you have into great preparation and unswerving focus for all 80 minutes. If you do this, the results will speak for themselves.

And when you are done, and before you go to collect your State champion medal, take a moment to sincerely congratulate your opponents, who after all will ultimately determine how worthwhile is your achievement.

  16. Jonesus, you seem to be close to the Farragut program. You also seem to be saying that the level of play has dropped for the Admirals. What do you think needs to be done by the boys, by the coach, by the fans in order to get the team playing its best by tomorrow and beyond?

  17. Euler, nice update. Congratulations to Bearden and condolences to Catholic. Both are good teams, the latest produced by consistently excellent programs.

These district / regional semi-finals are always the hardest because good teams go home after the game.

Nonetheless, thanks for calling the players out on behavior at the end. Although I wasn't at the game, and I understand just how intense the dissapointment is when things don't go your way in an important situation, how much better would the Catholic boys feel today if they had just swallowed the anger and played on as hard as they could?

  18. I wonder if our young men from TN have experienced any problems with travel?

Look at this excerpt from the US Soccer web site:

"The U.S. U-17 Men's National Team's trip to Europe, scheduled for April 15-May 2, has been postponed due to travel complications from the volcanic ash hovering over Europe.

Wilmer Cabrera's young squad, which had already made the domestic portion of the flight, will return to Bradenton tonight and await confirmation of travel changes. Early next week, the U.S. will bypass the England leg of their journey and fly directly to Italy for the International Tournament of Gradisca.

In Italy, the U.S. will play Mexico, Romania and Croatia on April 25, 26 and 27."
