No Animal we didn't make it to Soddy-Daisy, but those are the kinds of tournaments we are looking for in addition to AAU tournaments. As for the non sanctioned events--the beauty of being an AAU member is that they have the "added benefit" membership which covers you at non AAU events. Its only $2 extra and is a great benefit. There are many great events that are non AAU. I'm originally from VA and I know many youth tournaments there but now I'm in TN and need to find some competition here AAU and otherwise.

I think Sullivan East, Science Hill, Dobyns Bennet, Greeneville all have youth teams but unsure about tournaments.

    Thanks again!

Eveyone needs to read their insurance policies that they get when joining usa or aau. Your primary insurance muct cover you first and theirs covers after that. You are pretty much on your own anyway

Good point, but what Bill hopes to do this weekend is have as many teams as possible, but not combine more than 2 in order to avoid having the cream of the crop from several teams + have 5 deep per weight class. From speaking with Bill more... having 3 combined teams is stretching it, at least from the Chattanooga area.

He's still open to a few more teams to add - BTW.

The group of kids that we have that practices together are from 4 different teams. Although we all travel together out of town and practice together they are still registered under different teams. we would love to come but after talking to all the parents we agree that we would be viewed as an all star team and it wouldnt be fair to the teams bringing their regualr teams. Next year we will be better prepared and bring several Chattanooga teams. Good luck to all

  4. We were wanting to bring a team from Chattanooga up so that Tennessee could finally get all the best kids on the Aau duals team. Our problem is that we have about 15 small programs around town and there is no way we could fill a line up even close enough to make it worth while. Most of our serious kids get together once or twice a week and practice together and we travel together out of town. I dont know that it would be fair to bring those kids up there even though there are kind of on the same team. Anyway good luck and we wish we could join you.

    More info from Coach Bill:

http://www.seaausports.com/sport.php?c=wrestling or www.safewrestling.com . Thanks to all that came to last weekend's K-8th event I hope all of you had an opportunity to get some great competition and valuable mat time.

We are hosting are 6th Annual Beginner's/K-5th grade Dual Tournament this weekend at Blackman High School in Murfreesboro Tennessee. The Beginner's Tournament is for 1st and 2nd year wrestlers ONLY. Coaches please don't bring your studs to get mat time.

Everyone wins in the Beginner's Tournament and we are hoping to get several rounds in this year with six mats.

The K-5th Grade Dual tournament is an experiment for our experienced wrestlers who can't wrestle in the Beginner's Tournament. I know it is hard to put a full team together with these weight classes, but these are the weight classes for the AAU Elem.

National Duals. I know we have the talent in Tennessee to compete, and I am hoping that we can harnessed and pull together this talent. The Sharp Shooters are even lacking several weight classes, but are putting together two teams to compete. Put as many of your kids together and get them some good mat time and start letting them learn how to wrestle in a dual competition.

Please register for both tournaments by Wednesday (tomorrow) 11 AM at:

    www.safewrestling.com

    Thank You, Coach Bill Kennedy

  5. Very good post. I have a son with a pretty bright future in this sport but he battles severe asthma. Anyone with any helpful suggestions please email me. What medications have you found to work the best? Have you ever used a nebulizer prior to a tough match? One thing I have noticed with my son and several of the kids I coach that suffer from asthma is that when we are at a tournament that is printing t-shirts on site there asthma episodes sky rocket. That smoke from those heat presses fills the gym and really seems to bother them.

[/color]Well the final match came down to a third grader who fought his heart out and didnt give up. but the toss wasnt the reason we lost there was some matches that we won the 1st time we wrestled them that we shouldve won the 2nd time. but we fought.

good job guys and cant wait to wrestle with yaw next weekend.

"THE WILL TO WIN IS USELESS WITHOUT THE WILL TO PREPARE"

who was the third grader and how did he do throught the tournament?

  7. DUST - Seems like some unwarranted confusion on this coin flip stuff. TSSAA says your done after 5 matches in a day so the Central folks had their hands tied there. What I understood they were doing, was declaring a tie for 3rd and splitting the 3rd/4th place team points evenly which to me was the only fair way to handle it. The problem was what to do with the TSSAA supplied medals that were ingraved by weight class, 1st to 4th. They didn't have extra 3rd place medals to distribute, thus the coin flip. Therefore, you might have actually tied for 3rd but left with a 4th place medal. I don't know what else they could have done. Besides, most of these kids have so many medals laying around its hard to imagine the actual medal meaning that much to any of the wrestlers.

They split the team points if both wrestlers had already had 5 matches. If one wrestler had 5 matches and the opponent only had 4 matches then the opponent with 4 matches was declared the winner and his team received the team points. Thats why there was so much confusion and many people upset. Evidentally it cost one team in particular a chance to place a ahead of the next team ahead of them. I think it was a bad situation and they had no option but to follow what the rules said in this case.

  8. That is a long way from Central high school. There are three places within 5 minutes of the school. The easiest would be Sweeneys B-Bq. Yiu would turn right out of the parking lot of the school and it is about half a mile at the most on your right. They have a Restaurant and also a seperate sports bar area. On down the road 1 mile you have the Restaurant at Island Cove marina. There is also Cancun Mexican a Restaurant bout 4-5 miles down hwy 58 towards 153.

  9. If I'm not mistaken (and odds are, I am--58/Amnicola used to turn me every which direction but the correct one when I lived there)....

There used to be a place called either "durty Nelly's" or the "Durty Parrot" that wasn't a terrible little place.

I think it would be back down the Amnicola direction, going back into town from Harrison. You may have to get back up on 153 to get headed the right way.

    hope this helps....

  10. Pretty good post, except I don't feel Ooltewah's success can be tied as much as you say to Harrison's youth program. Sure some kids have come through Harrison. But most come from Snowhill, East Brainerd and Ooltewah youth associations. Hunter and Ooltewah Middle schools have pretty much dominated middle school athletics for the past 7 or 8 years. If you had a kid zoned for Central what would you do? I can tell you I would move, send them to a private school, or whatever I had to do to keep them from attending Central High School. I thought the new football coach had them heading in the right direction after last year, but after watching and listening to several coaches during the Ooltewah game this year. I don't think so. Very disappointing, to say the least. I hope Ooltewah never plays them again.

Thats true Ooltewah does receive players from all those different organazations but the majority of the major talent comes from harrison and East Brainard. Ooltewahs youth leagues are way below average and in fact only play each other. Snow Hills teams are sparse. They have to go to Cleveland and play in their leaugue. In fact my own son and 4 of the kids on our state championship baseball team go to school at Snow Hill but elect to play at Harrison. This varies from year to year obviously. There is a reason Hunter has won the county championship so may times in the last 10 years. The group of freshmen Ooltewah has right now is unbelievable. The group of 9-10 year olds we have at harrison should even be more unbelievable. They have already exceeded everything any othr age groups have ever done in that area. This is in all sports. Will they go to central? I highly doubt it unless some things seriously change. Baylor and Mccallie are going to get about 5-6 of them my son included and Ooltewah & Tyner will get the majority of the rest. I hate it, but parents have to put their kids in the best environment they can.

  11. I can give some first hand insight to this problem. I grew up in harrison, played at Central and now coach our youth leauges. First off I want to say there is no #1 reason Central is continually in the dumps. It is a multitude of reasons. One thing I can assure you that is not is the feeder programs. The Harrison rec program is one of the most successful programs in the state in all sports and has been for quite some time. Obviously it varys from year to year age group to age group but overall I would put it up against anyone. Only middle valley and east Brainard can compare and they are both twice the size. There are some phenomenal athletes there right now especially in the 9-10 year old age group. The football league has three teams in that age group and they are all undefetaed except when they have played each other. One team has only given up 12 points in 5 games this year. They have won or been runner up in the county every year for the last 5 years. The 9 year old baseball team won the state and was second in the World Series. (should be first do to rules viloations, but that is another story). In addition to this there are many good basketball players as well. The youth wrestling team is as good as it gets. They have mulitple state champions each year and have one kid who is one of the best in the entire country. Hunter middle school has won the county championship in Football, wrestling and baseball so may years in a row that I have lost track. So what happens? Most of the good kids go to OOltewah. Ypu think the OOltewah team is good now? wait until the freshman class is seniors. I gurantee they will be state champions. They all came through the Harrison rec leaugue except for a few. There are also a couple at baylor and Mccallie in that same age range. If you take the best 15 kids out of your feeder programs and 10 go to Ooltewah ,three to private schools and you get two of them then you arent going to be successful. Why is this happening? 1) The school is a dump with terrible facilities. ( I blame this partly on the administration constantly changing. There is no sense of ownership or pride in the school. 2) Constant coaching changes. 3) The kids dont know how to win nor do the expect to win. 4) Poor community support (do to the constant changes, poor facilities, losing records ect... 5) changing demographics within the community. Part of Harrison is as nice if not nicer than anywhere in hamilton county. The area around the lake and the state park is as pretty as anywhere in this town. the area immediately near the school is getting run down and some move furthr out or to oOltewah to avoisd this. * Basically anyone who is a good athlete is going to Ooltewah or a private school. look at Ooltewahs sudden rise in the caliber of their sports programs in the last few years. I can assure you a large portion of those kids grew up in harrison and came through our rec leagues. i know because I coached a lot of them.
