  1. Unlike the previous principal, the current one goes out and promotes the school and tries to make it better.

You've got kids at Temple, right? Why? It seems like you would take them out of a school that you're so critical of.

I am taking my kid out of Temple. Maybe she does try and go out and promote the school and tries to make it better, but so far, she has been very unsuccesful in her efforts.

  2. Actually I was referring to the previous administration who didn't do much to try and grow the school. The current administration is doing a heck of a job trying to put the pieces back together, but it's not going to be easy. Not many parents are willing to send their kids to a school in the middle of Highland Park when there are plenty of good options in much better parts of town.Yeah, Rector got the win over Tyner last Saturday (after they heckled him during his warm-up.) He's done at Temple after this year.

"heck of a job trying to put the pieces back together?" Can you explain what you mean? The way I see it the only pieces they are trying to put back together are the ones that were created when they dropped the vase. Every time they get half of it glued back together, they drop again.

  3. That is good to know this will be an adjustment with the screen name change but I will manage. What do you think of the latest with Temple droping football but keeping the middle school team.Do you know what there intentions for the future are with football.

I was shocked to read it in the paper. Maybe the school should start giving out Stephen Hargis' number instead of their own because if anybody at Temple wants to know anything about what is going on, he is the man to call.

It does not appear that the decision to drop football was one that was very well thought out. The TSSAA probabtion should have had little to do with the decision. It does not make sense to drop the varsity program and keep the middle school program. Where are the kids going to go play in the ninth grade except at another school?

  4. Where is Pasture or has he been put out to pasture. We all new he would go away when things started happening like most people thought it would.Has he moved out of town or changed his screen name.I can only hope if he transferred it was cleared by TSSAA and that he is not practicing spring football with another school before properly enrolling

Well Farmboy, how sweet, you missed me. Now that makes me feel special. I had to change my screen name because people kept connecting "pasture" with "pastor" and I got tired of correcting them. When I picked "pasture" I really was not thinking about the church connection.

Do not worry, I will never leave you or forsake you. I will always be right here. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

  5. Green Acres.... you are clueless about high school basketball and clueless about Temple athletics.. Coach Marcum is the man! He did a great job in the basketball season and is already proving himself of being a great baseball coach here at Temple. He will put Temple football, basketball, and baseball back on the map... He played college basketball and baseball and really knows his stuff. I respect him for the way he has handled all of the drama and crap that he came into.

P.S. Sexton is Mr. Basketball in 09!!!!

How is that I am clueless, yet I predicted before the season started that our boys would make it out of region and go to the state tournament. I am clueless, yet I predicted that it would be CSAS and Temple for the championship game. I was clueless when I said that Temple was going to beat CSAS. Am I clueless because I thought Temple could have won more games during the season than they did. Was I clueless when I posted that Sexton was THE Mr. Basketball, a statement that you obviously agree with? Yes, I was clueless when I said that Temple would beat Union City by a basket at the buzzer. You cannot be right all the time, I guess.

I was wondering, how is he going to put basketball back on the map. Three state titles in the last six years, six upset wins at the state, seven(?) trips out of the last eight(?) years or so, and a strong showing at state this year. I could go on but is it not a little clueless to say that he is going to put basketball back on the map? Then there is that baseball thing. If you think Marcum is going to put baseball back on the map, then you are clueless. Baseball has never been on the map to start with and never will unless a committment to it changes. If he was able to put a baseball team on the map, then why did he not do it last year at Silverdale? I would not call a 5-14 record getting put on the map. He may very well be able to put football back on the map even though I did not really think it was taken off the map. I hope he has more success getting the support and backing he needs then the previous coaches did or football will continue its slide off the page. It may be that I may not be as clueless as you would like to believe and you may be more clueless than you care to admit.

  6. Coach? Perhaps you think you are responding to somebody's elses posts, I don't know. Anyway, my original questions were quick. And you still haven't answered them. Strategically, what would you have done differently? That's all I'm asking.

Well, no one has ever guessed my identity, though many have tried, but I figured I would go out on a limb and try a guess on yours. Oh well.

Regardless of who you are, I do respect your opinion and your well thought out, logical responses. It is hard to keep it short once you get going, is it not? If we do not see eye to eye on every detail, does that necessarily mean that I am wrong because you or others disagree. Could it be that you simply do not get what I am trying to say? Rather than thinking about my perspective objectively, people want to immediately take offense and start attacking me in defense of the coach. I do realize that at times my statements are a little spicy, but I intend for them to be. I like the dialogue. I like honest discussion and if some want to call me names and insult me along the way, I can handle it with a grin and a chuckle.

You asked about what I would do different and there really are only a few things that I think would have made the season better. Remember, you asked for it, so do not get worked up whenever you disagree with me.

I would not have pulled the basketball players out of the gym to play football. They were a bunch of juniors who, except for Brandon and Jeremy, were seeing their real varsity time. I think that hurt them as to their chemistry and conditioning. While I do agree with the poster who talked about football helping out basketball, it was bad timing and in this particular situation, it hurt and did not help. I also think it illustrates the lack of experience on the coach's part. I would not have called any timeouts after big plays, especially ones that were generating momentum. I saw that many times and I honestly do not know what the strategy is for hamstringing your own team. If you get momentum, the other coach will call a time out for you. There were a number of times that Jeremy Sexton was in motion to the basket and an offensive play would be called. In my opinion, this group of boys do not need a coach to call plays that often, especially when they are actually going to the paint to score. When we played weaker teams that we were expected to beat, I would have left my starters in and made them give me all they had for the first half, regardless of the score and then start taking them out several minutes into the third quarter once the momentum was established again. You have to get in your opponents head and take away his hope and resolve. Did you notice that earlier in the season when we would get up on someone quick in the first quarter, that Jeremy Sexton would get pulled? Did you notice that later in the season When we would get up on someone quick in the game, the boys would slow it down? I would have worked harder at getting the players mentally prepared for games. I did think our boys were well prepared physically for each game, just not mentally. I think you know as well as I that mental preparation is really more important than physical preparation. Someone who can out think his opponent and get in his head can beat him even if the other is more athletic. I would have saved my discipline for practices. If someone makes a mistake in the game, I would not sit him down unless he just does not have it. There were too many times that our best players were sitting on the bench during games because they were not doing things that way the coach wanted them done but it was not hurting the game. It hurt the team more for them to sit on the bench. I understand that you want players to buy into what ever system you have, but save the discipline issues for after the game. That is what pracitce is for. I understand that you need to pull a player if he is hurting the team and its chances of winning but just pull him, explain what he did wrong, and get him back in the game. I would have been more careful to control my emotions and act like an adult. I heard about and have seen for myself too many screaming fits, temper tantrums, kicking kids out of practice, out of the gym, getting in people's faces, etc. Just so you know I was at the Grace footbal game briefly, but long enough to see the shouting match with Kell, and was in ear shot of the away Grace basketball game when he said something hateful to an assistant coach. Now I honestly did not hear what he said but from his demeanor and tone, it was an inappropriate way to address anyone. I would have believed and coached my team like they were the most talented, best team in the state and never have allowed myself to ever to be overheard saying that the team is just not very good or we will never be able to beat them (not direct quotes).

One of my favorite basketball movies is "Glory Road" and one of my favorite scenes is where Rupp says that basketball is just about putting the ball in the basket. That is not entirely true, is it? Whereas, you may have been looking for me to tell you more nuts and bolts, fundamentals, what I would have done differently, the truth is I would not have done much differently at all as far as the basics. He did a wonderful job in those categories. My philosophies, strategies, and people skills would have been different and I think it would have made a difference from the beginning.

Thank you for the statements you made in your two most recent posts, agreeing that Temple had talent and also that this year was a learning experience for the coaches and players. Are you not basically saying the same thing I was, just in a different way and maybe not as direct? People were talking like Temple had no talent other than Jeremy, that we were not going to make it out of region, and that we had the best coaches in the region, or the state. I have said all along that the team was very talented, that we were going to state, and recently, that the coaches could have done a better job if they had more experience.

By the way, one area among many that we disagree on is that being tall does mean you are talented. People have been posting on here for the last couple of years actually about how untalented Carter was and Grace does not have 3 DI players. If you are from Grace, it is easy to entertain yourself with those ideas but Brandon Herman looks to be the only DI player derived purely from skill. Carter went DI because of his height but take six inches off him and his best hope is juco. Patrick is in the same boat. He is a good hustler but, take away six inches... Yes, I know, you disagree. No problem.

  7. Green Acres, got some quick questions for you.

Coach, I tried to reply and answer your quick questions and respond to what really were not quick questions but a diatribe. Every time I did my reply was turning out to be more of a diatribe than your original post.

Would it help if I just said "Congratulations on leading a mediocre, low talented team so far this season?" "No one thought they would make it out of region, including you, but my compliments on making it to the first round of the state tournament." Does that make it better and take away some of the sting?

By the way, I did not think the coaching staff did a poor job of coaching, actually, they did a good job of coaching for a group of kids who had no real coaching experience. I think the one coach, the older one, may have had some real experience, I do not know. However, I did think, from watching good coaches at Temple coach over the past so many years, that a more experienced coach would have had his team better prepared for games. It is just my honest opinion. I was taking a different opinion than the original poster who said that team was well prepared. I have seen well prepared Temple teams in the past, and this year's team was not a well prepared team to me and that falls on the coach. If you think they were well prepared, then we disagree and that is okay. We had way too much talent and ability to lose as many games as we did during the season and lose in the first round of the state tournament. I personally thought that Temple was better than all the other teams at state this year. I think a coach who had coached at the Murphy Center before would have done a better job preparing his team. There is no way a first year head coach can transform an untalented group of players into a state tournament caliber team when he is in his first year of any real coaching, especially when he has never coached a winning team in his few short years of trying. I thought all this was obvious, but maybe I am living in some far out fantasy world for pointing out what seemed to me to be right in front of your face. I was trying to insult or put down, just put things in perspective.

  8. Greenacres,

What do you have against coach Marcum? Temple had one returning player who was healthy this season. The rest were JV guys for the last two years! So you're telling me that taking a JV team from a year ago and beating Grace (3 D1 caliber players) and CSAS (Everybody back from the state runner-up team), and taking UNDEFEATED #1 Union City down to the wire at the state tournament is under achieving? You are out of your mind!!!!!!!! You better hope nobody at Temple ever finds out who you are because they will publically expose you for the moron you are!!!

So, are you saying that Grace and CSAS, whose coaches have been in the saddle for 20 years each, were outcoached by a 27 year old kid who, has only been coaching for four years or so, coached Silverdale's baseball team to 5-14 record last year, Temple's football team to a 2-8 record this year, and is coaching varsity basketball for the first time ever? Does it sound reasonable to you that he has the ability to take low talent level teams and cause them to play beyond their ability, something he has never done before that we know of? Is that what you are saying? What I am saying is that the team under achieved because they did have the coaching to bring out of them what they were really capable of. I am not saying that Caleb did not do a good job this year, I am saying the team should have done better, and I think a seasoned, experienced, veteran coach would have accomplished more. Am I wrong?

  9. Dadoffour,

Were you not the same poster who was predicting a blow out win by CSAS over Temple for the Region Championship (14 points, was it?)? I predicted Temple would win that game, so when I talk about coaching ability and what our players are capable of, you should listen.

Do you remember our girls basketball team last year? They went to substate, one game shy of where our boys attained this year. Did they make it to the sectional last year because their coach was such a good coach or because the team had such good talent? Did they lose at substate because they were just not good enough to go any farther or should they have at least hosted a game rather than travel (as they did the previous year), and should they have made it at least to the state semi-finals? If you say that they should have made it farther than they did, then why did they end up going home early?

I will let you and the rest of the people, who think they know what they are talking about, think about that - if you can - for a while before I post anymore.

(Just a quick side note, most better than average coaches give their team the credit when they win and take the responsibility for the team's losses for not having their team prepared well enough to win. It has been Dan Wadley's philosophy, also. So, when I do not jump on the bandwagon saying Caleb is a "heckuva" coach, when he blames his players for the losses, maybe you understand why and try to get where I am coming from and that I am just being honest about how I see things. I thought message boards were designed for honest discussion and dialogue)

  10. I think you are bitter towards the coaching staff. I think by reading your post that you wanted Temple to have the worst season they have ever had. If you were a true temple fan, you would be thrilled that Temple had a great season. If Marcum was that bad of a coach, which he isn't, would they of made it as far as they did? i don't think so.

Sure, I am thrilled to have a coach who led his team to a place he was not even planning on going. Sounds more like an accident than on purpose to me. Like I said, what success the team had was in spite of the coaching.

You probably should sharpen up your reading comprehension skills. What you should have gotten out of my post was that I knew Temple could have had a better season and I am disappointed that they did not show, on paper, how good they really were and that I thought better coaching would have opened the door for people to see how good Sexton and company really are. For all the accolades, few really grasped how good Temple really is.

Just so you know, I am not bitter, I am just being realistic and expressing my unbiased, objective point of view. You should try it some time. Surely, I am not the only Temple fan brave enough to post what I really think...

You sound like you might be one of the coaching staff or family who is taking offense to the obvious.

  11. I have been around Temple sports for a long time and I know a lot more about it then you think. There were better coaches available who would have gladly taken the job. Marcum is making plenty of money, and there are plenty of other coaches who would not mind having his paycheck. Temple is not lucky to have Marcum. Marcum is lucky to have a daddy on staff at HPBC who made sure he got paid plenty and ensures his job security.

What you saw on the court Wednesday was a young, inexperienced coaching staff enjoying the fruits of better, previous coaches like Wadley and Skogen. This team accomplished a lot in spite of the coaching. What I saw on Wednesday was more of the same coaching inexperience that we have suffered through all season long. Temple should have won on Wednesday and it was a lack of know how on the coaches' part on how to get them ready for the game. All season long, every time Temple got momentum going, the coach called a time out and took them out of rhythm. Temple played out of rhythm all season long and it was the coach's doing. The players know it is true. They have played for better coaches and they know the difference. If you know anything about basketball, especially Temple basketball, then you know that it was the coaching that hurt us. Think about it, with the exception of Jarrod Johnson, this is the same group of boys who have been mowing through JV teams since the ninth grade together. If you think they accomplished something this year, then you really do not understand what they really were capable of under better coaching. You go ahead and be satisfied with a first round loss. I know they could have been going home with another gold ball tomorrow.

Say what you want, but you never tell your team to pack up their bags when they are getting ready to go play in the first round. Pay for the hotel room another night and plan on enjoying another day at the tournament. What kind of message do you think that sent to the players?

I do not care how good other coaches think Marcum is or what an idiot you think I am, I know how good these boys really are and it is about time that their coaches open up their eyes. You people amaze me at your ignorance. Marcum did not think Temple would ever beat CSAS or Grace, ever! He did not even put it in his budget to go to the state tournament, even though people were telling him we were going since the beginning of the season. Why sit here and feel good about under achieving? The coaches were hoping that Grace won in the regional semis because they did not think they could beat CSAS. The boys wanted CSAS to win because they knew they could beat CSAS in the championship game.

You guys keep living in your sanitary world and keep accepting sup par as a standard. After next year. it will be a long time before Temple ever makes it out of region again.

  12. You David Brainerd people need to get a grip on reality. Why do you continue to overestimate your worth?

Temple has several good kids that did not play last year that will give them a much better team than last year, especially since they do not lost hardly anyone. They will not be good enough to compete for fourth place, but they will be good enough to beat Copper Basin and David Brainerd again.

One thing in Temple's favor is that they will be able to start off this next season without all the turmoil and drama.

I agree that Silverdale will probably finish second this year.

  13. No offense YngballCoach, just being honest, but our Jr High team dominated DB in the scrimmage. If DB is counting on the middle school talent to bolster the team they are in serious trouble. There are a few talented kids on the DB team but not enough to run the spread (again no offense just my opinion) or to make the playoffs just yet

Zone, I love the modifications you made to your tag. I guess you had a little time on your hands during basketball season? /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

  14. You folks based your opinion on one game played by MJ....One in which he did score 19 points....See him play over a 100 games and maybe you can speak with any knowledge...MJ doesn't have to do it by himself either...Jeremy does...Temple is a one man band and that's why they are in Chattanooga right now....

Sexton is a very good player but the three finalists are the ones that should be finalists...Sexton will be mentioned next year but Buckner will probably win it.....

If Temple is a one man band, then why couldn't UC stop him. I would think you would at least hold him to, say, 19 points? But no, the one man show scored his second highest career number of points on who? Hmmm....

We based our opinion on having seen Jeremy play since he was in ninth grade. Jeremy did what he always does, in every game. Normally, there are other players who step up and score more than they did on Wednesday, but not much more. James Kemp is normally in double digits but I think he was scared?

  15. Great season Temple! We are proud of you and all you did this year on the court. We beat Grace, CSAS, Silverdale Twice. Another thing is that I want to say is Congrats to Coach Marcum for getting our guys ready to play each game.

You think they have what it takes to repeat next season??

Coach Marcum did not even believe Temple would make it to the state tournament and he had them pack their bags and check out of the hotel Wednesday before the game. He was planning on playing baseball already this past week. The coaching staff did not believe Temple could beat Grace or CSAS. I know it sounds mean but these boys did what they did in spite of the coaching. Marcum did more to hold this team back from what they really could accomplish. An experienced, veteran coach would have gotten a win Wednesday. He will grow and learn, hopefully.

  16. Temple had a lot to do with UC having an off day. For a team that shoots and makes as many threes as UC, there ought to not be any excuses for the low shot percentage other than Temple played good defense. Rarerly did UC get any open looks from beyond the arc.

Temple shot and made about as many as normal, so the comment someone made on another thread about Murphy not being a shooter's gym is lame. Temple is not a big three point shooting team, although James Kemp is, himself, a big three point shooter. I am still trying to understand why James did not pull the trigger more often. He had a good number of open looks and did not fire.

Temple's defensive strategy seemed to work well but I am still trying to understand their offensive strategy.

All we heard about from a few zealous (which I appreciate) UC fans was about their swarming defense, and how no one could play with them for 32 minutes, and how it would be ineffective for any team to try and slow the game down. How is it that a team who has only one player with any real varsity experience or post season experience could hang with a team loaded with seniors and experienced players? Even on a bad day, you guys should have obliterated us. Either Temple is much better than people gave them credit for, or Union City is not as good as they thought.

UC definitely has a good team. Congratulations on doing what you needed to do to win today. Good luck to the Golden Tornados Friday!

  17. I have seen every game of the Union City boys since 2005 and Union City rarely plays that badly. We had an off day. We will be back & ready on Friday. We will blow you away. I think nerves got to most of our players.

    Good Job UC!!!!!

    Keepin' It going.....

What people need to realize is that Temple had an off day also. Do not forget that Temple was playing defense today and not giving many open looks.

Temple's Jeremy Sexton, #10, was unquestionably the best player on the court today.

  18. Well come noonish Wed if UC beats Temple we will see how much class they have..If Temple beats UC you will see class from UC fans as well..And last year everyone did booo MJ when he won his MR. Basketball trophy..Thats not to classy...And i do mean everyone.

It is just like a UC fan to be so self absorbed to think that everything is always about UC. You guys have a reputation for living in your own world of conscious reality.

They were not booing MJ. They were booing the decision. And I do mean everyone knew that Seth Skogen was the only one who should have been awarded Mr. Basketball and that is why everyone was booing. His stats alone were better. The only reaons MJ was awarded Mr. Basketball was because he was from the west and there are more writers who vote in the west than in any other part of the state. Someone from the west will always win Mr. Basketball and Mr. Football. There was no way in the world Robert Robinson from South Pittsburg should not have gotten the Mr. Football award. He was hands down the best high school football player in the state in Class A.

There is no way in the world anybody's fans would boo a kid.

  19. PPPPPPLLLLLEEEEEEAAAAAASSSSSSEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

You have got to be kidding me. You take a look at the amount of minutes that are main 10 play, give me a break. As far as running the score up, that is a complete joke when we are playing freshman and sophomores for most of the 3rd and fourth. It is not our fault we got put in a ten team district with more than half of the teams not very good. Marty Sisco......... enough said, one of the best coaches ever in the state of Tennessee, no i did not say the best, i said one of the best!!! I will be the first to admit that some of our fans can be a little annoying, without a doubt. It all boils down to people loving to hate a winner, so I guess we will just keep getting hated on. Good luck to all the teams at the boro!!!!!

People do not love to hate winners who show class when they win or if they lose. In fact, we greatly respect teams who can win with class, even if they are beating everyone. There is a difference and you should take the time to learn what it is.

Come Wednesday, say about noonish, Temple will show you what class looks like.

  20. Look..It don't matter if MJ gets 15 or 40..He will do his thang..MJ looks to pass more than he looks for the shot. MJ may get 15 or under but who is gonna stop the other 9 players that can shoot the ball well..Im sorry but i disagree with everything you said.I say MJ will get 25 or better if the game is kinda close..If the game is out of hand he will probly end up with 15..I say Union City wins BIG..94 63...OH..And if Brandon Hermon got 33 points, Temple didnt hold squat!..U will see the many things MJ brings to the table WED...He can pass, shoot and really take care of the basketball..U will see him rebounding, and taking charges also..And he will have several steals..U WILL SEE!

    Never heard of sarcasm?

  21. If...IF...IF the sun shines on a dogs but and Temple got past UC They still would not win the State Title

Manassas would cream them. If they could beat Moore Co. who will win

Temple is used to the put down talk, just have fun while you do it. Today's paper said that Temple was the only single A team to return from last year's single A tournament and the only defending champion from all classes returning this year. Temple has been proving some people wrong this year so you might want to get yourself a ticket and find your place in line...

I think that Jackson County drew the harder game. Even though Mannassas is not undefeated, I think they are a better team than Union City.

  22. I figure that Mannassas and Union City getting put into opposite brackets has more to do with God's sovereignty because, through Divine intervention, Temple will win another state title and will have played the toughest teams in the state to get there. It is that whole David vs. Goliath thing.

  23. I'll beat you Sexton will Score more points and Rebound and Steals than your Mr .Basketball and we will also hoLD HIm to 15 or less while Sexton will have 25 or so,count on it, you will not stop Sexton or should I say Coby.If Jarod get 15 RB and 13PTS and Kemp add in 12 to15 and the other get 10 UC will go down.wHEN i'VE SEEN HIM PLY SEXTON WILL EAT HIM ALIVE.

Temple was able to hold Brandon Hermon to only 33 points in the district championship game so, yeah, I bet we can hold MJ to just 15... /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

Seriously, the only way Temple wins this one is through Divine intervention.

  24. We are used to being overlooked and underestimated this year. Temple will come out and give their best game and see if it is good enough to advance to the next round. I hope UC does the same. Temple has a long history of winning when we were not supposed to and we are well familiar with these kinds of games.

Winning1, where do get all your smack talk from? You come out with some of the craziest stuff.

Jeremy Sexton is a great player and the rest of Temple's players have shined in some tough situations. I am looking for them to pull this one out. From the looks of it, this may be another one of those ancient matchups between a David and a Goliath, judging from the things some of the Union City people have said.
