My vote for 4A Back of the Year is Chris Walker from Marshall County. The kid is electric, a natural playmeker on both sides of the ball. Best I've seen at Marshall County since Dont'a Hightower. Here are his season stats:
Rushing-88 carries for 919 yards, 16 TDs, 10.4 yards per carry
Passing-3-3 TD
Receiving-9-75 2 TDs
All-Purpose Yards-1,395
3 Interceptions 1 TD
1 Punt Return TD
71 tackles on defense
Also consider Marshall County quarterback Ashton Posey, who has also put up some huge numbers this year for the Tigers.
Passing-138-199 2,293 yards, 16 TDs, .693 completion percentage, 126.7 QB Rating
Rushing-48-156 yards 3 TDs

I've seen the McClendon kid play from the sidelines all year, he is the real deal and is definitely worthy of a Class 2A Mr. Football Back of the Year nomination. Just ask the opposing coaches who they game plan for when they play Forrest and ask the kids that try to tackle him. Either they are in an ice bath the next day or massaging thier hamstrings from trying to catch him from behind. Here are his current stats:
Rushing 189 carries 1,658 yards 20 touchdowns 1 fumble
Passing 1-1 TD
Recieving 6-132 2 TDs
1 punt return TD
Should set single season school record for rushing yards and touchdowns this week versus Fayetteville.
Also consider Junior Lineman Boone Sweeney for Class 2A Lineman of the Year, the kid is a beast!
And his compatriot, senior Logan Ray deserves consideration as well, a great leader and he knows how to get to the quarterback on defense and is a rock on the offensive line.

It's a shame such a great tournament was ruined by a terrible home plate umpire in the Silver Bracket final. He clearly did not know the rules and it seemed he felt like his ego was bigger then the game. An umpire in that big of a game should be cognizant of the rules and try to be as transparent as possible, not change the game with an obvious miscall.
That is taking nothing away from East Roberston, who played a great game to win the title.
Like in years past, these two squads will more than likely meet again in the region tournament, should be a heck of a game!
Also, the tournament's lack of respect for the media members that were there covering the event for 12 1/2 hours on Saturday was disappointing.
We are are professionals and we know what we are doing as far as never interfering with play. If there was rules that stated there should be designated media areas painted on the field, then why were they not provided, like the areas in Murfreesboro at the state tournament? It only takes a couple of sprays from a paint can to make a box?
Our job is to report the event and as far as I know, out of all 24 teams there, we were the only media members reporting your event and supporting the teams and the girls that play this great game.
Thank you,

Like most of the article, they are trying to make it sound like Forrest lost the game instead of getting beaten, maybe making it seem like a couple of seniors played for MC sounded better. MC does not have a senior starter on the team. A couple of 11th graders, maybe two 10th graders, the rest are 8th and 9th graders I think. They start 5 8th graders including the pitcher, catcher, left fielder, 2nd base, and right fielder. By the way when Forrest had 2 runners thrown out on the same play in the region championship game, I think the throw came in from the right fielder (8th grade), to the catcher (8th grade) who then threw the other runner out at third (10th grader). Like I said before, richlandraiderdad, not a bad sofball season for a basketball school. I hope MC wins the state, but no matter how they finish, they have already exceeded almost everyone's expections except the players and coaches.
Sorry about the error in your grade and your name in the article Sara Raby. Have the utmost respect for you and all your teamates in Moore County. Like Coach Cheatham said in the story, you kicked our butts. Looking forward to a great rivarly in the future and go D9-A at state!

Cascade beat a really bad Fayetteville City School team last night. I believe it is the first year they had a team, so Cascade played it like a JV game. Opinion... How long does it take kids to adjust from good pitching to poor pitching? In my opinion and from what I've seen as a coach for several years, it is very difficult for the better hitters to hit the weaker pitching. District nine unfortunately only has a couple of teams with good pitching and this kills those teams come post season every year. How many games does TSSAA allow a team to play in regular season now? The only way to see great pitching for the entire season when your in a weak district is to play a lot of tournaments I suppose.
You can schedule 34 regular season games and the weekend tournaments count as only 4 games each, so in the end, you can play well over 34.

Cascade had every bit as much talent on the field in my honest opinion. I didn't see the books, but I'd bet Cascade out hit the Rockets. Cascade had a couple of mistakes that cost them dearly last night. Although there were two good umpires, mistakes were made on their part as well. Cascade had a base running mistake in the last inning getting the a runner thrown out at the plate when down by two runs. The next batter up hit a solo homer which would of been the tying run. Bad thing is, even though the runner shouldn't of gone or been sent whatever the case may be, the umpire made a bad call at the plate which cost the run. Forrest catcher had the plate blocked prior to receiving the throw which is clearly a rule violation. The runner beat the throw, but couldn't access the plate with her slide. This same umpire appeared to be a stickler for the rules not allowing a courtesy runner for the pitcher in the top of the first because Cascade hadn't been on defense yet. You'd think if he was going to enforce that rule (which I've never seen or heard of anyone enforcing even if it is on the rule book) he would of been all over the goof up that cost Cascade a chance to tie the game.
Forrest had 13 hits, Cascade had seven. That was a strange call on the courtesy runner, never heard that called before. The play at the plate was close, didn't really see it from where I was. It was good, well-played game by both sides, all the players should be commended for their effort and sportsmanship in the contest. Should be another battle in Wartrace next Wednesday, can't wait to see it!
